‘Inglorious Basterds’ Is Out on DVD

Entertainment • Views: 24,236

External ImageOne of Quentin Tarantino’s coolest movies was released today on DVD and Blu-ray disc: Inglorious Basterds, starring Brad Pitt and Mike Myers. I saw this in a theater, and highly recommend it if you’re down with Tarantino’s amped-up, graphic style.

And if you don’t want to wait for the DVD to be delivered, you can download it from the iTunes Store in an “iTunes Extra” edition with alternate scenes and other special content: Inglorious Basterds.

Great movie. I loved it.

Eh- I've like a couple of Tarantino’s films, but I don't go out of my way either. I did get the latest Harry Potter film last week though. Great effects in that.

I was surprised at how good this movie was.

I'm glad to see that while some things change, appreciation of a good movie remains the same here. Remember when people were calling it Jewish Violent fantasy porn or something along those lines. I can't find the link, but I think the review was at the NYT.

I really hadn't given any thought to ever seeing this movie. Just struck me as wrong for some reason.

I haven't seen it, don't think I will, but I was troubled by the note of some of the reviewers' criticism. They seemed mortally offended at the idea of a violent Jewish revenge fantasy.

Not everything has to be an uplifting tale of pious forgiveness, dudes.

19 freetoken  Tue, Dec 15, 2009 2:53:46pm

So I'm listening to the late night video-stream from Copenhagen... and some Canadian farmer (head of an NGO) was just speaking at a working group for the Kyoto Protocol. He made no sense at all. Obviously he and his fellow farmers are concerned about their emissions being counted as part of the Kyoto Protocol... but his statement was classic double-speak. His point was that adaptation = mitigation, and mitigation = adaptation.

Problem is... that is not how those words are used in the English lexicon.

Just another example of how language is re-designed as needed to meet political realities.

Much better than slogging through one of her books, especially if you like old movies.

Meanwhile, back in Copenhagen....

Henrik Svensmark was apparently part of a panel discussion when he just literally falls out of his chair. Turns out that his heart got out of rhythm and his Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator (ICD) kicked in and saved his life!

Only two shocks happen onscreen, the camera cuts away before the third shock. You can hear Svensmark grunt as the third shock hits him - if you've ever seen someone "jump" after being defibbed with paddles, an ICD causes the same reaction on a smaller scale.

He's in stable condition in the hospital.

Pulp fiction and Reservoir Dogs are probably going to be regarded as his masterpieces. I think he tries to hard sometimes with things like the Kill Bill movies. Oh, plenty of us lefties and gay activists hated Reagan with an irrational exuberance. If you were tied into the gay community in NYC (or I would imagine also SF) in the early 80's, you might have at least sympathized. We just didn't have the internet to spread the crazy and didn't have a religious tome to distort into 'truth'.

I wasn't. Then again, I'm biased, being a Tarantino fangirl and all. Heh.

If you want a good contrast for IB, see the original film that inspired Tarantino. The original is pure 70's expolitation cinema and has its laugh out loud moments, but I personally prefer the new version.

re: #5 robdouth

Remember when people were calling it Jewish Violent fantasy porn or something along those lines. I can't find the link, but I think the review was at the NYT.

Eli Roth, who played the Bear Jew in the film, has talked extensively about the whole Jewish revenge fantasy aspect of Inglorious Basterds. Heck, his father even wrote a bit about it here. I thought it was a very touching piece, and gave voice to a often unspoken bit of truth. It definitely put the film in a new light for me.

I've been of voting age since Carter. I watched Nixon go down when I was in high-school and I listened to my parents curse Johnson daily.

I just don't think that it was this mean spirited before. The Republicans where so pissed that Clinton got elected (damn you Ross Perot!) that they lost their minds and politics has been on an evil bender ever since.

I was in the cloistered environment of military service during the Reagan years so my view may be skewed.

Make no mistake, I'm a Reagan fan. The Reagan years where the best to be in the service. The world was afraid to eff with us back then, Beirut not withstanding.

I remember well enough. Like I said before, "in my opinion."

65 gregb  Tue, Dec 15, 2009 4:27:24pm

Just finished watching it. It wasn't anywhere as near as bloody as the Drudge headline said when they first learned of it.

It has Tarantino parts of capable violence Reservoir Dogs, the quiet uneasiness of Pulp Fiction.

Other influences:
Bridge over River Kwai
The Dirty Dozen
Cinema Paradiso
Burnt by the Sun
Band of Brothers

It even has baseball scene of Untouchables, and shares some actors from Grindhouse and Hostel.

It's fun just seeing all the obscure hat tips.

re: #64 BruceKelly

I got ya. My dad was in the service starting late 70's and he always told me about the raise in morale during the Reagan years and at least wherever he went, the military guys were usually more often than not, Pro-Reagan.

I hear you though, because Reagan was far more popular than anyone until Clinton for awhile there, and the people that hated him, were a small but vocal group that made him seem like a doddering old fool.

True Romance was always one of my favorites.

One of Tarantino's favorite flicks was "Master of the Flying Guillotine". Anyone who's grown up in Southern California about my age has seen it over 100 times on KCOP 13. It was one of my favorites too. It was the inspiration for Iron Monkey, which BTW also has a hat tip to the "noodle western" Tampopo.

Walken and Hopper in an incredible scene that is most definitely NSFW.

I contend that the *ONLY* reason Christopher Walken doesn't get the same type of fawning that Hollywood legends like Jack Nicholson [deservedly] get, is because he generally only rejects movie roles if he can't fit them into his schedule. The result is that for every really good film he's been in, he's been in 5 stinkers.

My Walken recommendations are:
The Deer Hunter
Brainstorm
Suicide Kings (not a great movie, but a great Walken performance)
Communion (ditto)
The Dead Zone
and, of course, this scene from Pulp Fiction:

Don't know about a nerve but I found Reservoir Dogs pointless. I also dislike his tendency to lift, shot for shot, sequences from other movies - the mexican standoff is from Ringo Lam's 1987 Hong Kong action flick City on Fire except that he showers us with blood.

By comparison, "A Fistfull of Dollars" was a model of morality & clarity. Again, this is just my opinion but if I want to watch nihilism, I'll watch the master rather than the pawn.

I just caught it over the weekend and was amused that a good third of the dialogue is in German, and lots of it is in French.

And there are countless references to German cinema, which was Hollywood's main competitor until the Nazis ran off all the good artists.
