The Palin-Schwarzenegger Kerfuffle

Politics • Views: 2,272

Yesterday, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger took a well-deserved shot at Sarah Palin for her ditzy Washington Post op-ed denying that climate change is caused by human beings:

“You have to ask: what was she trying to accomplish?” Schwarzenegger, in Copenhagen for the international climate change summit, told the Financial Times. “Is she really interested in this subject or is she interested in her career and in winning the (Republican presidential) nomination? You have to take all these things with a grain of salt.”

Schwarzenegger won’t say it outright, but I will — she’s pandering to the tea party base, and spouting climate change denial nonsense because she knows it’s what they want to hear from her.

Today, Palin is firing back in that inimitable (read: dishonest) way of hers: Sarah Palin: Greener Than Thou? | Facebook.

Why is Governor Schwarzenegger pushing for the same sorts of policies in Copenhagen that have helped drive his state into record deficits and unemployment? Perhaps he will recall that I live in our nation’s only Arctic state and that I was among the first governors to create a sub-cabinet to deal specifically with climate change. While I and all Alaskans witness the impacts of changes in weather patterns firsthand, I have repeatedly said that we can’t primarily blame man’s activities for those changes. And while I did look for practical responses to those changes, what I didn’t do was hamstring Alaska’s job creators with burdensome regulations so that I could act “greener than thou” when talking to reporters.

Eugene Robinson pulls up Palin’s record (oopsie!) to show that she’s not telling the truth about what she “repeatedly said:” Palin’s own ‘Climate-gate’.

Sarah Palin is such a cold-eyed skeptic about the Copenhagen summit on climate change that it’s no surprise she would call on President Obama not to attend. After all, Obama might join other leaders in acknowledging that warming is a “global challenge.” He might entertain “opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.” He might even explore ways to “participate in carbon-trading markets.”

Oh, wait. Those quotes aren’t from some smug Euro-socialist manifesto. They’re from an administrative order Palin signed in September 2007, as governor of Alaska, establishing a “sub-Cabinet” of top state officials to develop a strategy for dealing with climate change.

Back then, Palin was the governor of a state where “coastal erosion, thawing permafrost, retreating sea ice, record forest fires, and other changes are affecting, and will continue to affect, the lifestyles and livelihoods of Alaskans,” as she wrote. Faced with that reality, she sensibly formed the high-level working group to chart a course of action.

“Climate change is not just an environmental issue,” wrote Palin. “It is also a social, cultural, and economic issue important to all Alaskans.”

Palin stiffs hairdresser in Salt Lake

After being ushered to a room on the 15th floor and given some instructions (don't talk to Palin unless she talks first) she did Palin's hair while the former Alaska governor chatted with her family.

Then, the Palin party left to get to the book signing at Costco on time.

Halliday was the last one out of the room because she had to put her equipment away, then watched as they all drove off without anyone mentioning payment or a tip, which is common when the hairdresser travels to the client for the appointment.

Well, at least noone can accuse Palin of getting an expensive haircut.

Also in the same article, you betcha, is a bit about Costco pulling tomatoes off the shelves for Palin's visit.

Palin does have a point in that the "green" economics haven't exactly worked in California, despite all the hype and hoopla. Opposition to various green power projects have thwarted some; technical hurdles have shut down others, and the job creation in the "green" industries haven't exactly materialized.

Then again, those are the same criticisms for the nation at large, not just CA.

Also, Schwartzenegger is running a huge, extremely complicated state, and while I have not agreed with everything he has done, he is doing a very hard job very creditably, and is not giving up, or pouting all the damn time.

Palin not only gave up early, she took on a much easier task. Keeping Alaska in the black basically requires that you not be a complete idiot.

She should watch her mouth criticizing the Governator.

Sure must be nice to live in a state where they actually pump the oil, rather than just let it seep out of the sea bed and not be able to touch it. Think of what CA could do if they actually let us set up some drilling rigs.

People tend to think of Governors as "mini Presidents" of their states. However the full range of actual executive powers granted to governors by their respective states varies widely. For example, even for all the hoopla the governor of Texas is a relatively weak position. Veto powers are limited and the governors only real power is he can keep the legislature in session.

California has one of the stronger governor positions and with such comes more responsibility. I would put it like this....it is like dog years.....one year of governor of California is probably equal to seven years as governor of Alaska

It's working for me in Safari -- you might need to use the 'reset Safari' feature. Don't clear all your cookies though, that can be a PITA to restore them all.

That's what I thought, then I clicked on their link to their "co-sponsors". It seems if you give money to get a booth you get to call yourself a sponsor. Not that this absolves CPAC from even allowing them to attend, but the term "sponsor" here seems in this sense to be pretty watered down.

Does it really matter that Palin denies that global warming is primarily caused by human activity? She has and continues to acknowledge that global warming is an extremely serious problem and she has not taken a position against reduction of emissions or any other practical steps. Judging from the lack of international consensus, Palin is certainly not the only one who is against doing what other participants percieve to be grandstanding or attempting to unfairly allocate the burdens of remediation.
In fact there is no political consensus whatsoever as to the specific steps which can or should be taken to solve the problem.
Arnold and others attack Palin's motives for denying that human activity is the primary driver, but it seems to me that is quite besides the point...what does matter is for nations to agree on a common approach to try to stop or slow down the warming trend.
Denial that human activity has recently been the primary driver does not equate to a refusal to recognize that the warming is real, nor does it equate to denial that positive human activity can solve the problem.

141 thinker  Wed, Dec 16, 2009 11:46:42am

"International Concensus" is pretty much there. A handful of deniers making a big stink over some cherry picked emails and getting the help of the advertising-revenue starved press doesn't really change that.

As far as Palin is concerned, giving her the benefit of the doubt and accepting that her motivation is sincere and not just a political ploy meant to draw attention to her requires significant suspension of disbelief...more so than one would need to believe Harry Potter is a warlock or Tom Cruise is a viable love interest for any woman.

No I don't. For example, if there was a technological fix which allowed us to cool down the globe, would it really matter whether the fix worked by reducing the amount of GHG emissions, or by perhaps poking a few more holes in the ozone layer? I don't see the necessary connection.

146 TreBob  Wed, Dec 16, 2009 12:03:30pm

I must be short of coffee today or something. Where's the dishonesty?

Palin said started sub-cabinet to investigate, second article verifies.

Palin said she and other Alaskan's witness climate change first hand. Second article verifies.

Palin says she doesn't think climate change (which she acknowledges) is anthropogenic. Nothing in second article denies or disproves.

I can't see the dishonesty in her statements. Not that I'm a rabid Palin fan, but this seems to be Palin Derangement Syndrome, in that although the second article verifies what she said she is still labelled as dishonest.

Lost again.

I said "what if" and "would it matter", which you ignored along with the point of my question.
My reference to the ozone layer, if you didn't get it, was actually based on my readings concerning the scientific theory indicating that the melting of the Antarctic ice was proceeding more slowly than the Arctic due to the hole in the ozone layer in the southern hemisphere. IIRC, they said that the hole would self-repair in about 10 years, at which time they expected the Antarctic warming to accelerate.

On further reflection, I just realized why the A in AGW is so important. It is precisely because we somehow imagine that if we just stop the A then the GW will automatically be fixed; and we also reject out of hand any other possible technological fixes which might have nothing to do with reducing GHG's.
Why would we want to put ourselves in this kind of straightjacket?
