John Birch Society to Cosponsor CPAC 2010

Weird • Views: 13,899

If anyone is still wondering why I want absolutely nothing to do with what the so-called “conservative” movement has become, please note that one of the cosponsors for the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in 2010 will be … the antisemitic, racist, conspiracy theory-promoting John Birch Society. There are plenty of other extreme right wing groups on their cosponsor list too, but the addition of the Birchers puts the frosting on the cake: Conservative Political Action Conference Cosponsors.

There was a time when this lunatic hate group was marginalized and shoved out to the fringes, as they deserved, but people like Glenn Beck and Ron Paul have been working hard at bringing them back to the mainstream — and now here they are at CPAC.

I’d say “unbelievable,” but it’s sadly all too believable. The right wing is completely off the rails, over the cliff, and plunging toward the rocks. Disgusting.

UPDATE at 12/16/09 11:42:26 am:

And at the same time, the “Liberty Council” (it’s in quotes because this is a theocratic group that actually believes in the exact opposite of liberty) is threatening to pull out of CPAC if homosexual group GOProud remains as a cosponsor. (Content warning: the link goes to Google’s cache of a really ugly homophobic right wing site.)

So they’re fine with racists and conspiracy mongers, but want to purge the gay people.

UPDATE at 12/16/09 1:21:27 pm:

Also note Sarah Palin’s apparent connection to the John Birch Society: The magazine on her desk in this photo is the official publication of the JBS.

It's absolutely insane. Ironically the Birch Society will be welcome but Hot Air pointed out today that conservatives are trying to prevent Gay Republican groups from attending CPAC.

I wish that they were plunging towards the rocks - the sense of acceleration and the rapidly expanding view of hard, craggy surfaces might motivate a change in actions.

But it isn't.

And even when they hit and the gas tank explodes they will rejoice that the spectacle attracted more attention for the cause and that they showed their true bona-fides by riding the whole thing out.

The krazee ride is a self reinforcing experience.

GOProud's CPAC Sponsorship Is Threatening to Undo Anti-Gay Conservatism

We've argued that GOProud joining hate groups like Focus on the Family and the National Organization for Marriage to sponsor the Conservative Political Action Conference was actually no big deal to gays. But it is a big deal to raging homophobes!

The Liberty Counsel’s Matt Barber (pictured here with a limp wrist) is threatening to boycott CPAC if the "social liberals" at GOProud remain a sponsor, reports stand-up comedian Peter LaBarbera.

GOProud — a running joke among gay conservatives — isn't just tearing apart the Republican gay community. It's responsible for the possible civil war among heterosexual Republican zealots.

Gays aren't welcome but nobody is going to complain about the Birch Society.

33 KingKenrod  Wed, Dec 16, 2009 11:36:27am

If I was a CPAC co-sponsor and my name showed up in a list with the JBS, I'd damn sure un-sponsor myself until the JBS got kicked to the curb.

Sadly, the intelligent conservatives have already bolted from the party, or they're laying low to save their skins. The rabble has taken over, and this is scary. 87 Jaerik  Wed, Dec 16, 2009 11:56:15am

On a more philosophical topic, watching the meltdown of the GOP has gotten me thinking:

Categorization and guilt-by-association is built into all of us. It's a vital evolutionary tool: I ate this kind of berry once and got very sick. I will not try to eat said berries again.

However, we've grown up being taught that the same categorization with people is an injustice, especially along lines of race, gender, etc.

There seems to be a cultural exception for behavior and group identity, though. Nobody argues that it's wrong to shun all members of NAMBLA because their primary group identity is having sex with young boys, for example.

So the question becomes: what percent of a particular group needs to behave badly before it becomes socially acceptable to extend the blanket negative assumption to all members of said group? In other words, at what point does the No True Scotsman defense fail?

I'm nearing that point with climate change deniers, and more and more frequently, the entire Republican party. But I like to objectify these things, and thinking about the independent variables involved in such a determination is an interesting thought experiment.

re: #75 brookly red

well the next election is 2010 not 12 & yes elections, especially off year ones are basically an endorsement or rejection of the standing party's record.

Off year elections, unfortunately, also tend to favor extremists; their followers are more motivated to vote and can easily overwhelm more level headed voters.

Add that to the near certainty that the GOP will pick up seats just as a matter of historical probability, and there's a non-zero chance that the loons will claim victory (rightly or wrongly) and gain momentum going into the next election cycle.

Or, not. A win for the loons could as easily build disgust within the party and lead to their ouster.

Either way, 2012 is roughly an entire eternity away in political time. Actual predictions are pretty much impossible.

Yeah, I get your point - it's definitely a hate site. But I'm really glad you posted the link for one major reason: these roaches really need to be hit with the white-hot light of exposure, and the best thing that could happen is for folks to see exactly what these people are thinking, writing, and saying - in their own words.

I know I tend to be an idealist, but other than those morons out there who already agree with this kind of disgusting crap, the overall reaction - I hope and pray - will be one of total abhorrence.

At least the world will believe the Timesonline telling them what Israel has been saying for years.

Come on now - there are all sorts of civilian uses for nuclear triggers. I can think of three off the top of my head -

1) a really effective car alarm. Someone bumps your car and it sets off a perfectly spherical shaped charge. They will never bump your car again.

2) door bell for an extremely large house. Someone presses it and it sets off a perfectly spherical shaped charge, telling the occupants that someone is at the door.

3) initiator for a mass hanging of convicted homosexuals. Alert all of the executioners in a three mile radius to commence hanging convicted homosexuals. Works both in Iran and at CPAC conferences.

Here's the post I tried to send in #66

Confidential intelligence documents obtained by The Times show that Iran is working on testing a key final component of a nuclear bomb.

The notes, from Iran’s most sensitive military nuclear project, describe a four-year plan to test a neutron initiator, the component of a nuclear bomb that triggers an explosion. Foreign intelligence agencies date them to early 2007, four years after Iran was thought to have suspended its weapons programme
The technical document describes the use of a neutron source, uranium deuteride, which independent experts confirm has no possible civilian or military use other than in a nuclear weapon. Uranium deuteride is the material used in Pakistan’s bomb, from where Iran obtained its blueprint. “Although Iran might claim that this work is for civil purposes, there is no civil application,” said David Albright, a physicist and president of the Institute for Science and International Security in Washington... “This is a very strong indicator of weapons work.”
Mark Fitzpatrick, senior fellow for non-proliferation at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, said: “The most shattering conclusion is that, if this was an effort that began in 2007, it could be a casus belli. If Iran is working on weapons, it means there is no diplomatic solution.”

The Times had the documents, which were originally written in Farsi, translated into English and had the translation separately verified by two Farsi speakers. While much of the language is technical, it is clear that the Iranians are intent on concealing their nuclear military work behind legitimate civilian research.
The documents detail a plan for tests to determine whether the device works — without detonating an explosion leaving traces of uranium detectable by the outside world. If such traces were found, they would be taken as irreversible evidence of Iran’s intention to become a nuclear-armed power....
Mr Fitzpatrick said: “Is this the smoking gun? That’s the question people should be asking. It looks like the smoking gun. This is smoking uranium.”

OT: Coburn is delaying Troop Funding

Way back on December 2nd, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) filed a single-payer amendment to the Senate health care bill, which was supposed to come up for a vote this afternoon. But at the last moment, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), at the behest Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), demanded that the entire 700-plus page amendment be read aloud on the floor. That's happening now.

Under normal circumstances, this would be a 10 or 12 hour dilatory tactic. But not today. Today, Democrats were planning to file for cloture on the Defense Appropriations bill, in order to get it passed by Friday before midnight when department funding runs out. If the entire amendment is read aloud, it's likely that the Senate won't be able to pass the defense bill until Saturday at the earliest, and would have to pass a short-term continuing resolution to keep money flowing.
"The only thing that Sen. Coburn's stunt achieves is to stop us from moving to the DoD appropriations bill that funds our troops - not exactly the kind of Christmas gift that our troops were expecting from Dr. No," said Jim Manley, spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Absolutely. Some people seem to think such criticism amounts to saying 'all conservatives are evil' or, equally stupid, that it somehow implies that one is arguing that everyone on the left is perfect.

There has been a lot of that sort of whining around lately, sad to say. But the fact is that regardless of how many well intentioned, intelligent conservatives there may still be, it is at this point impossible to deny that the movement as a whole is going down a very bad path, and as of yet shows no sign of slowing down never mind changing direction.

The problem with Lomborg's approach, IMO, is that it is extremely difficult to "price" some, perhaps many, of the negative consequences of AGW.

For example, the leader of Tuvalu spoke earlier tonight, and they have been quite vocal at Copenhagen. How does one price the loss of an entire nation?

NOTE: the Palestinian rep is speaking.

Right, the determination is definitely going to be subjective and up to the individual in question.

I assume whether or not you personally are a member of said group is a big scalar factor in the percentage "trigger point." For some people, it means there is no trigger point at all - they will invoke No True Scotsman all the way until they are the last person standing.

I admire your efforts to pin down variables in the "reputation equation" but it seems like there are so many it would be a difficult task. The things that affect and build a person's perception are extremely diverse between individuals.

It seems to be a good starting point to determine from which perspective you are attempting to test the effect of reputation. Is it a member of the group? An opponent? A neutral party? Media person? How do they receive information? Who do they trust?

Yes, you missed something -- Ben Hur posted a link to a video making a bunch of stupid, nonsensical claims about the CRU emails, and the video was produced by a raving nutjob.

Hence my comment that it ought to show him something about where he's getting his information on climate change.

Just for record, this is not even close to being accurate.

I didn't notice what YouTuber posted that particular one, but it's posted by others that are not as nuts, though I'm pretty sure it would be deleted if I were to post it.

All it was was a non-denier computer programmer being interviewed by the BBC about the computer "code" or programming at the CRU.

It wasn't a cartoon of a prophet.

About Bjorn Lomborg -- anyone tempted to believe he's a credible "expert" should read through the material on this website:

Lomborg Errors

His books are amazingly full of errors and misleading statements. He's not a climate scientist -- in fact, the only academic training he has is in political science and game theory, and he's published a grand total of exactly ONE scientific paper -- on game theory, not climatology.

More on Lomborg's background and climate change denial claims:

The Lomborg Story

Just asking, Never heard the name before, saw the article in TIME, has an article this past week in WSJ and in regards to his errors...

"Response of the scientific community
The original DCSD decision about Lomborg provoked a petition[7] among Danish academics. 308 scientists, many of them from the social sciences, criticised the DCSD's methods in the case and called for the DCSD to be disbanded.[8] The Danish Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation then asked the Danish Research Agency to form an independent working group to review DCSD practices.[9] In response to this, another group of Danish scientists collected over 600 signatures (primarily from the medical and natural sciences community) in support of the DCSD and presented their petition to the Danish Research Agency.[8]"

Looks like he has a lot of support among his peer's.

With Iran continuing to work on its missile tech and long range missiles, I'd say the totality of the evidence leans towards the validation of the Times story on the nuclear triggers. Iran is playing games with their nuclear program, and much of it remains out of the prying eyes of the IAEA so it's left to other methods to suss out what's really going on. Ahamdinejad has been busy exhorting the ramping up of their enrichment program at secret sites and other locations for years. It's all part of a puzzle that is the Iranian nuclear agenda.

Obama's Push for Copenhagen Deal Could Violate Constitution, Critics Say

President Obama's mission to save the planet from global warming could end up trampling on the U.S. Constitution, critics say.

When Obama arrives in Copenhagen Friday, he is hoping to cut a deal on a new global-warming agreement. Even though the conference is not likely to produce a legally binding deal, critics say if the president signs an international climate treaty pledging reductions in carbon emissions, he will violate the Constitution.

I'm not sure I understand the reasoning behind this. The President is free to sign whatever he likes - but his signature isn't sufficient to bind the US to any agreement. Such an action requires Senate ratification, and everyone know this. His signature, by itself, would be little more than a goodwill gesture with no legal standing, and as such Constitutional issues don't even arise as far as I can tell.

Scientists around the globe are now working to catalogue all the genes that go wrong in many types of human cancer.

China is studying stomach cancer, and the US is looking at cancers of the brain, ovary and pancreas.

I'm not sure I understand the reasoning behind this.

The source was FoxNews... and I propose that the reasoning behind it was just to run the daily Obama-is-destroying-our-Constitution story for the tea party crowd.

Not only does the President have the job of negotiating treaties, in this particular case that is not even happening (to the chagrin of many.) The Copenhagen meeting is part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change... in other words, it is just another UN meeting like the numerous others.

The US is of course part of the UN, and the UNFCCC was created down in Rio (remember when GHWB went down there?) If you look at the US nameplate at the meeting, it is black letters on a white background, unlike most countries' which are black with white lettering. This is because the US (and a few other countries) are there participating as part of UNFCCC, but not of the Kyoto Protocol treaty proper.

Furthermore, it has been made clear today that a real treaty will probably be put off until the next meeting (in Mexico City).

So the FoxNews story is just more right wing noise.

Clinton never even gave Kyoto to the Senate to ratify because it had no chance of passage. Why did he choose that route? Well, because the Energy Information Administration (EIA) predicted losses to GDP of between 1.0% and 4.2% by 2010, reducing to between 0.5% and 2.0% by 2020. Copenhagen is doubling down on the emissions reductions, and at a time when the US economy is still reeling, another hit to GDP isn't to be countenanced by voters.

Christmas tree baubles to tell story of warming Greenland ice-sheet:

Tiny orange balls made from Christmas tree baubles could shed new light on how Greenland's Ice Sheet will respond to a warming world.

A Bristol University-led team has shown how the 4cm spheres can go through water channels that run under glaciers and be recovered afterwards.

If equipped with sensors, these balls could gather data on how this meltwater is lubricating the movement of the ice.

Currently, scientists are unsure about the significance of this effect.

When I see that someone is deliberately promoting false claims, and writing books full of errors, I'm honestly not going to give much more time to that person.

Lomborg is one of the people I used to listen to when I was much less informed about climate change. Now I know that he's a kind of "soft" denier -- but no less of a denier.

Well, looking into this Lomborg guy, he seems to have many supporters. The only active detractor, the biologist named Kåre Fog, whose site you linked to, seems to be the only person I can find that has made some effort to deny Lomborg's positions.

This article seems to indicate that Lomborg has plenty of support with in the scientific community.

[Link: www.docstoc.com...]

I will continue to look into this, but so far, from what I can see about Kåre Fog, Kåre is basically a self-promoter and has very little support other than the numerous web pages he has place on line himself.

And considering that Lomborg has received good press in TIME, WSJ and NPR in just the last week, it appears that his opinion is at least respected, right or wrong.

Nope, I don't see Lomborg as being some sort of phony. Not in a long shot.

re: #225 lawhawk

Clinton never even gave Kyoto to the Senate to ratify because it had no chance of passage. Why did he choose that route? Well, because the Energy Information Administration (EIA) predicted losses to GDP of between 1.0% and 4.2% by 2010, reducing to between 0.5% and 2.0% by 2020. Copenhagen is doubling down on the emissions reductions, and at a time when the US economy is still reeling, another hit to GDP isn't to be countenanced by voters.

The Senate had voted on a proxy bill and the vote was something like 93 to 3 against Kyoto.

As for what the 17% emissions cut we are willing to sign up to will cost us, it is debatable.

We are already seeing a decline in emissions due to de-industrialization. Europe saw this 10 years ago and much of its Kyoto cuts were simply due to that and moving off of coal (not completely off coal, but a shift).

I will go find the links ...

More here: The Skeptical Environmentalist %P% Union of Concerned Scientists.

Lomborg’s book is seriously flawed and fails to meet basic standards of credible scientific analysis. The authors note how Lomborg consistently misuses, misrepresents or misinterprets data to greatly underestimate rates of species extinction, ignore evidence that billions of people lack access to clean water and sanitation, and minimize the extent and impacts of global warming due to the burning of fossil fuels and other human-caused emissions of heat-trapping gases. Time and again, these experts find that Lomborg’s assertions and analyses are marred by flawed logic, inappropriate use of statistics and hidden value judgments. He uncritically and selectively cites literature—often not peer-reviewed— that supports his assertions, while ignoring or misinterpreting scientific evidence that does not. His consistently flawed use of scientific data is, in Peter Gleick’s words “unexpected and disturbing in a statistician.

His debunking of Lomborg's work is very well documented. This isn't "apology," it's pointing out serious errors, the same ones that have been noted by other sources including the Union of Concerned Scientists.

As I said, go ahead and believe Lomborg is an "expert," if that's what you want to believe. I've linked to several places that show he isn't even remotely credible, and that he distorts and cherry-picks data. If you'd rather ignore those sources, it's your call. I won't be following you on that.

Yeah, one of the things i like about Buckley is in interviews, you can see how pained he was to realize that he was [for a time] on the wrong side of the civil rights bill...not that he opposed civil rights, but that he opposed the bill for reasons he later realized were insignificant in the face of the overwhelming necessity of the thing.

I have lots of respect for people who realize they were wrong and aren't afraid to say it frequently.

Another way to spin it would be that Sen.
