In the first one, at 28 seconds, as Bachmann says "we do not have clean hands," the guy to the right, who I think is Bishop Harry Jackson, lifts up his hands. I thought he was going to disagree.

It's interesting bachmann said America was worthy of God's wrath, but had a liberal said something like America wasn't perfect , bachmann would have accused them of being anti-American.

Pastor Jim Garlow says that health care reform violates almost all of the Ten Commandments

It do? Let's see... (Exodus 20:3–17)

3 Do not have any other gods before me.

Hard to see what this has to do with health care reform.

4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

Or this.

5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me,

6 but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.

7 You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.

This, either.

8 Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.

Health care related? I don't think so. Although it's pretty damn hard to get an appointment on the weekends unless it's an emergency.

9 For six days you shall labour and do all your work.

Ibid.

10 But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns.

11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and consecrated it.

Ibid. Nothing so far.

12 Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

Well, dishonoring mom and dad would have been pretty unhealthy when I was growing up. I'll give this one a half-point.

13 You shall not murder.

A full point. Murder is very unhealthy, at least for the person being murdered.

14 You shall not commit adultery.

Another half-point. There's certainly a higher risk of STDs outside a monogamous relationship, not to mention the risk of getting hit with a gold club or thrown out of a truck while it's moving.

15 You shall not steal.

A half-point here, too, since the whole argument about health care involves rapidly escalating costs, and one of the solutions offered is to ferret out fraud.

16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Not seeing a connection here.

17 You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Or here, other than the already-noted fact that getting caught doing something you're not supposed to can lead to bodily harm. Half a point.

So that's, let's see, three points out of the ten, and that's being generous.

We can play a similar fun game comparing the Ten Commandments against the claim made by some fundamentalists that they form the basis for Western law and therefore ought to be nailed up behind every judge's bench. Especially that first one.

58 Sharmuta  Thu, Dec 17, 2009 2:56:10pm

One of the reasons I have been critical of militant islam is because of the theocracy (among other things). I'm not comfortable with anyone dictating to me about my relationship with God, or with any one else's. It's a private matter and it's completely against all that I hold dear as an American. So to see my political party morph into the Christian variant is highly disturbing.

I mean- for them personally- they want to have their relationship with God be like what we see here... that's all fine and good for them. They have that freedom. What they don't have the freedom to do is use their office to evangelize the rest of us. I really don't appreciate bringing faith into the political sphere. You start calling things missions from God more and more frequently, then you water down God's worth.

Wikipedia Is A Pro-Obama, Tax-Exempt Scam, Senate Candidate Andy Martin Claims

Who this guy?

Frank Martin - The Man Behind the Whispers About Obama

...

He prepared to run as a Democrat for Congress in Connecticut, where paperwork for one of his campaign committees listed as one purpose “to exterminate Jew power.” He ran as a Republican for the Florida State Senate and the United States Senate in Illinois. When running for president in 1999, he aired a television advertisement in New Hampshire that accused George W. Bush of using cocaine.

...

A motion he filed in a 1983 bankruptcy case called the judge “a crooked, slimy Jew who has a history of lying and thieving common to members of his race.”

...

When asked Friday about an assertion in his court papers that “Jews, historically and in daily living, act through clans and in wolf pack syndrome,” he said, “That one sort of rings a bell.”

He said he was not anti-Semitic. “I was trying to show that everybody in the bankruptcy court was Jewish and I was not Jewish,” he said, “and I was being victimized by religious bias.”

Separation of Church and State is fundamental to the American political system, as has been upheld by the Supreme Court.

However, there is no prohibition against expressing religious beliefs on a personal level.

Nor is there any prohibition of expressing religious beliefs in an official level, the prohibition is only "...make no law respecting an establishment of religion". Of course, that's where the good arguments come in.

I don't have a lot of time to argue but there are a lot of comments, especially on the last thread, that I found a little disturbing and I'm finding it odd that an atheist like myself is going to have to be the one to defend people's first amendment rights.

The Christian Right is too focused on achieveing a theocracy to realize it would be the absolute worst thing to ever happen to America since it's founding. The problem lies in their inability to think past the next election and realize that the theocracy they want to usher in may not always be ruled by "Christians" but coud at some point in time be ruled by Muslims. Separation of church and state was written into the constitution for a reason; namely that the founding fathers did not want to go back to a system of government that their forefathers had fled from. I have no problem with God and prayer being a part of someone's life decisions, but the moment they use their position of political power to evangelize, I draw the line.

Extremism in the Media

Fox News Channel admitted that it went too far when it booked anti-Semitic serial litigant Andy Martin for an appearance on the Oct. 5 edition of "Hannity's America." Host Sean Hannity introduced Martin as an "Internet journalist" who made what Hannity called "the explosive claim that [then-Sen. Barack] Obama's role as a community organizer was a political staging ground perpetuated by the unrepentant terrorist William Ayers."

Prior to his appearance on a prime-time Fox News special, Hannity's guest was best known as an unsuccessful candidate for political office in three states with a history of making anti-Semitic comments in the literally hundreds of lawsuits he's filed against attorneys, judges, court officials and other individuals. In one of his lawsuits, Martin called the judge a "crooked, slimy Jew." In another he wrote, "I am able to understand how the Holocaust took place, and with every passing day feel less and less sorry that it did."

Chuck Norris: Mary Might Have Aborted Jesus Christ Under ObamaCare/'Herodcare'

*sigh*

That's blasphemous. Mary agreed to become the Mother of God of her free will. To suggest that she might have aborted if it were legal and available to her presumes that she was forced into this role. More, it presumes that Christ's birth could have come about through forcing a young woman to act against her will.

Chuck needs to learn some goddamn theology.

Changing the subject slightly; here is one puzzle I don't quite get:

Climate Change Is Nature's Way

This opinion piece in the WSJ today is essentially an AGW denier position, without explaining what is denied, and then one finds that the writer hobnobs with Buz Aldrin among others, here:

The Space Development Steering Committee

I don't get it. This man should have at the very least been able to formulate an argument why "nature" is acting right now, and why most scientists are so wrong, but he doesn't.

It would be interesting to find out if most of the members of the steering committee agree with this NASA connected pundit.

Bachmann Parts Ways With Fundraising Firm

Rep. Michele Bachmann's (R-Minn.) fundraising firm has become the latest defection from her camp, according to several sources familiar with the split.

The Gula Graham Group, a Republican fundraising and consulting firm, ended their three-year relationship with Bachmann last week, GOP sources with knowledge of the firm's decision said Wednesday.

Mike Gula, co-founder of the Gula Graham Group, confirmed his firm had parted ways with the fiery Minnesota Republican.

Looks like a demure "no thanks" to me.

That's not what I'm seeing in the body-language. But it would be too long to go into here....

all these so-called preachers are not legitimate at all. i have no idea what they're even talking about.

there is only one spacejesus-approved preacher on this earth, and he is this guy:

You started this, sort of. It's interesting and all I know of body language reading is from O'Reilly (and 30+ years of marriage).

The outward palms say no, and the downward eyes and turned body suggest not ready for this stuff, and the guy on his knees doesn't seem really confident of the response to begin with.

While these whited sepulchres pray on their "sanctified" television sets for healthcare reform to fail, Americans are suffering and dying because they don't have access to decent healthcare and live-saving medication.

These people disgust me.

re: #250 SanFranciscoZionist

Just going back to this: I wonder what Bachmann had to say about the Rev. Wright's "God Damn America" moment?

Not perfect, but a close second...

It was bound to come to trouble eventually, and it was Bachmann’s status as a second-line Sarah Palin surrogate that finally undid her. While pushing Palin’s Bill Ayers attack line, Bachmann did not restrict herself to the customary associations, such as “radical” and “terrorist.”

With her boundless enthusiasm for demonizing those she views as godless, Bachmann cheerfully broke new ground in the Ayers/Jeremiah Wright culture wars by forging a series of associations between “leftists” and “liberals” and “anti-Americans,” inside and outside Congress, who in Bachmann’s view ought to be investigated.

But is it un-American to say America is worthy of God's wrath? Bachmann will have to investigate herself.

It's car-wreck dicey, that's for sure. Think of the additional priceless moments we'd get if she went after herself in front of a microphone. But it'd be sad, too, because she's a congresswoman and sure, they're not always the brightest bunch, but not like this...not like this...
