Palin Twitters About Climate Change

Environment • Views: 4,595

Sarah Palin is sharing her bizarre views on climate change with the world via Twitter: Sarah Palin (SarahPalinUSA) on Twitter.

These little tweets are more revealing than Palin knows; it’s clear that her objections to climate change stem from her radical religious right view that mankind cannot affect God’s creation, and should not even try.

Copenhgen=arrogance of man2think we can change nature’s ways.MUST b good stewards of God’s earth,but arrogant&naive2say man overpwers nature

Another tweet reiterates her scientifically ignorant view that humans are not causing global warming.

Earth saw clmate chnge4 ions;will cont 2 c chnges.R duty2responsbly devlop resorces4humankind/not pollute&destroy;but cant alter naturl chng

“Ions.” Good grief.

Well, at least it’s believable that she actually wrote this stuff herself.

One could argue that it is arrogant, but sorry, the naive point of view is that man couldn't possibly affect nature.

I think it's kind of arrogant to think you can effect policy with Tweets.

From the tweet:

Earth saw clmate chnge4 ions

Setting aside the interesting issues of whether the Earth has eyes by which to see, or that the Earth has, not too dissimilar to Pagan ideas about the planet, a cognitive ability, the question remains whether indeed there has been climate change for ions.

Turns out there has been. The lowered pH of the ocean is directly due to ions, as everyone knows from their high school chemistry that pH is a description of a substance based on the H⁺ ions in the solution. By adding CO2 to the atmosphere, man has indeed changed the lives of ions in the ocean!

But it is also true that over the eons that the ions in the ocean have changed with climate, ocean pH has changed over time, and there are many interesting corners of geology that try to understand the earth in the earlier periods, when the oceans were quite different.

Let's hear it for the ions!

"arrogance of man2think we can change nature’s ways"

As a matter of fact, we can. A thermonuclear war between NATO and the Warsaw Treaty would have changed nature for the next million years or so.

We can change nature in the most negative ways possible. We are doing it right now. Why shouldn't we be able to do the opposite, too?

And why should God/Nature be angry because we're using HIS/HER sun and HIS/HER wind and stop polluting HIS/HER earth?

Just asking

17 freetoken  Sat, Dec 19, 2009 3:29:08pm

The Sarah seems to be overlooking, in her claim that man can't affect "nature" (which, again, is a tinge of Paganism given how she has now set up "nature" as supreme over humans), are all the changes humans have had on the biosphere.

The extinction of many species are directly attributable to humans. The extinction of many more species can indirectly be attributed to humans.

Humans have transported species from one location to another on the globe, the end location being totally new territory for invasive species.

Arrogant and naive to say that man can overpower nature? You've got to be kidding. You know about technology, Sarah? It's all those many ways in which man uses, alters, changes, and yes overpowers nature. From hydroelectric dams to genetic engineering, we alter nature all the time here on earth. So is it just the atmosphere that is immune from our interference? Like, we can poison rivers but not skies?
Ack! I can't stand it!

I had twelve years of girls' school that was church-affiliated and not once was the theory of evolution questioned in my science classes.... and yes, we had bible classes as well. There was no conflict.
I think when specifying ' religious ' groups, it might be wise to narrow the definition a little. Most mainstream Christian religions have no problem with evolution as science.

BTW, don't know if anybody caught this, but 3 days ago Dr. Hansen penned a short essay:

The Temperature of Science [PDF]

which goes into a bit about "Climategate", the lessons he has learned from gathering temperature records from various sources, etc.

Interesting opening section:

Fast forward to December 2009, when I gave a talk at the Progressive Forum in Houston
Texas. The organizers there felt it necessary that I have a police escort between my hotel and the
forum where I spoke. Days earlier bloggers reported that I was probably the hacker who broke
into East Anglia computers and stole e-mails. Their rationale: I was not implicated in any of the
pirated e-mails, so I must have eliminated incriminating messages before releasing the hacked emails.

The next day another popular blog concluded that I deserved capital punishment. Web
chatter on this topic, including indignation that I was coming to Texas, led to a police escort.

How did we devolve to this state? Any useful lessons? Is there still interesting science in
analyses of surface temperature change? Why spend time on it, if other groups are also doing it?
First I describe the current monthly updates of global surface temperature at the Goddard
Institute for Space Studies. Then I show graphs illustrating scientific inferences and issues.
Finally I respond to questions in the above paragraph. [...]

Been there, done that. AM religious broadcasting is a truly bizarre experience. Honestly, when I was a teen, I used to listen to AM all the time, esp. late at night. I was a big time DXer. The later at night it got, the crazier the programming got. I found it vastly entertaining. I no longer consider what I listened to for entertainment to be entertaining. Now it's dangerous because it's become the mainstream. I never thought that shit would ever be something elected officials and national TV/radio hosts would be spewing out on a daily basis. Bizarre indeed. And scary.

More from Hansen's essay:

The nature of messages that I receive from the public, and the fact that NASA
Headquarters received more than 2500 inquiries in the past week about our possible
“manipulation” of global temperature data,
suggest that the concerns are more political than
scientific. Perhaps the messages are intended as intimidation, expected to have a chilling effect
on researchers in climate change.

The recent “success” of climate contrarians in using the pirated East Anglia e-mails to
cast doubt on the reality of global warming* seems to have energized other deniers. I am now
inundated with broad FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) requests for my correspondence, with
substantial impact on my time and on others in my office.
I believe these to be fishing
expeditions, aimed at finding some statement(s), likely to be taken out of context, which they
would attempt to use to discredit climate science.

If all branches of science were subjected to this amount of intrusiveness, a lot of important work would grind to a halt.

There are certain areas of science that are targeted by the culture warriors. Unlike evolutionary biology, climatology is a relatively small field in which the number researchers are perhaps counted in the thousands.

Climatology is on the hit list. It believes that the Earth is old. And presumably some of the studies have been done using ice cores, or series of tree rings that go too far back for their taste. Presumably a little googling will turn up some sort of denial article explaining (or trying to explain) how the ice core (or tree rings) are being mis-interpreted or faked.

When the attacks really started creeping over into geology I occasionally forwarded links to my brother (who is a geosciences professor). He asked me to stop since he didn't have the time to deal with that sort of nonsense, and also said that he went through that set of arguments one/twice a term with students in some of his classes.

115 danS  Sat, Dec 19, 2009 4:23:07pm

Actually, she didn't say (or is it twit) that mankind can't affect God's creation.
She said that mankind can't change nature (written it twice).

She did say that man has to take care of "God's earth" which is just a manner of speaking. Not unlike the current VP, presumably a Global Warming proponent (God love'im), who insert the word God once in a while in a sentence. He's not exactly a radical Christianist , now is he?

What she said seems perfectly reasonable to me:
Climate changed/ will change. Nothing mankind can do about it. Mankind better do what he can to take care of the environment and mankind's wellbeing- develop resources and keep it clean.

Can't see what's wrong with that.
Oh, and as somebody mentioned, the fact that she believes climate has changed for "ions" kinda contradicts that she's a radical literalist/creationist, no?

116 RealismRox  Sat, Dec 19, 2009 4:23:25pm

From the tweet:

Brilliant! Big upding.

Palin on Creationsim 2006

That was how she was brought up, she said. Her father was a public school science teacher.

"My dad did talk a lot about his theories of evolution," she said. "He would show us fossils and say, 'How old do you think these are?' "

Asked for her personal views on evolution, Palin said, "I believe we have a creator."

She would not say whether her belief also allowed her to accept the theory of evolution as fact.

Here's what is not debatable. Due to advances in modern science, we can now track tsunamis and earthquakes, blizzards and hurricanes. We can give people advanced noticed, and prepare with building codes and emergency agencies. Modern technology can also help with communication, which is vital in a natural disaster area.

I would like to think that God wants us to use our brains and abilities to help our fellow beings (human and otherwise).

And of course, nobody disputes that man can affect the climate and ecology on a local local and regional level, and the oceans and the atmosphere on a global level.

Judge Keeps New Oklahoma Abortion Law On Hold

A district court in Oklahoma on Friday blocked a new abortion law that would require women to provide detailed information about why they want the procedure. That information, names omitted, would then be posted on a state Web site.

Judge Daniel Owens extended the temporary restraining order already in place, which means the law continues to be blocked for now. The measure includes more than 30 questions a woman seeking an abortion would have to answer, including details about whether she is having relationship problems or whether she can't afford a child.

General defends court martial for pregnant soldiers

A US Army general in northern Iraq has defended his decision to add pregnancy to the list of reasons a soldier under his command could face court martial.

It is current army policy to send pregnant soldiers home, but Maj Gen Anthony Cucolo told the BBC he was losing people with critical skills.

That was why the added deterrent of a possible court martial was needed, he said.

The new policy applies both to female and male soldiers, even if married.

It is the first time the US Army has made pregnancy a punishable offence.

Thanks! Though... trigger a quake by releasing some steam?

The way it works is that they make the steam by pumping water deep underground, where it encounters hot rock and flashes to steam, which then rises back to the surface to spin a turbine. The idea that this causes earthquakes rests on the notion that the fluid pumped underground acts as a lubricant, allowing fault plates to slide more easily.

It's questionable, to say the least. It seems to me that the water would have to spread over a very large area to have a significant impact, far larger than the amount of water used would allow.

Water does not turn to gas at those pressures a few miles underground. Current thinking is that water is what greases the slips, but that continents move cannot be changed any more than the planet's orbit can be changed in less than "ions"; but it is conceivable that large sudden quakes can be made into many smaller ones by injecting water. On the other hand it could also trigger the mother of them all. Want to experiment somewhere?

Now, I went out last Sunday with my little Mary-Ann
She said please stay still Monday, and grabbed me by my can
She laid a big one on me, suprised me with her tongue,
But her surprise was waitin' there, between my cheek and gum.

It does seem draconian, but OTOH, you can't have people waddling around pregnant in a war zone. I mean, you always have civilians waddling around pregnant in war zones, but you should try to have your soldiers be non-gravid at all times.

We had some very bad luck, historically, trying out having women active in frontline roles during two very long engagements. This is going to take some working on.

I agree. Just think that a court martial is over the top. I think a discharge would suffice but maybe some would prefer a court martial? I don't know.

The latter is the case. So a married Army couple can both get court-martialed if the wife gets pregnant. While on deployment I assumes. Seems rather excessive and this will certainly raise some hackles.

Why? Would you consider it just "natural" to get pregnant when on active duty in a war? This is a volunteer army is it not?

So a female soldier becomes pregnant before being deployed and doesn't become aware that she is pregnant until she is on station and then she is subject to a court martial? Then adding to that they court martial the male spouse that impregnated her? Seems to me that this rule can open up a lot of traps for married service men and women.

Yes. Also, here's a snippet from Stars and Stripes:

Eugene Fidell, who teaches military law at Yale Law School and is president of the National Institute of Military Justice, said he understands the motivations of the order.

“You have to assume it’s in response to a number of incidents that have caused female GIs to be sidelined at a time when they can’t be spared,” he said.

But he said the prohibition is fraught with “a mare’s nest of legal, ethical and policy issues” that highlight the discord between personal autonomy and military needs.

“Here you really have issues that go to the core of personal integrity: reproductive rights,” he said.

There are also issues of enforcement, Fidell said. The woman is immediately suspect once the pregnancy comes to light, but unless she identifies her partner, the male could go unpunished despite bearing the same culpability under the order.

I'll repeat the final comment to bring it to light:

Unless she identifies her partner, the male could go unpunished despite bearing the same culpability under the order.

re: #298 danS

You are avoiding the issue.

Fact 1: CO2 levels are now the highest they have been for over 600,000 years.
Fact 2: They have increased 40% since the industrial revolution.
Fact 3: CO2 intercepts and absorbs terrestrial radiation (infra red, IR) emitted by the earth as it cools. The wavelength absorbed by CO2 is determined by its quantum vibrational transitions. This wavelength happens to be just what is given off by the earth. This is well known.

The timing of the increase in CO2 and subsequent warming strongly correlate with the beginning of the industrial revolution. There is a physical mechanism that explains this and many other facts.

You are not entitled to your own FACTS, but you may know of an alternative hypothesis that explains them.

I am happy to listen to alternative hypotheses; scientists do it all the time.

And which IPCC authors were proven to be dishonest, and by whom, and based on what evidence?

Reread my post. I said if you argue that CO2 is not a GHG, or that GHGs have no impact on temp, then you have a problem with physics.

Now, your post is a bit unclear. Are you saying that GHGs have an effect but a minor one, or are you saying man made CO2 is somehow different from natural CO2, or are you saying CO2, although a GHG has little effect?

Determining how much of the CO2 up there is ours is fairly straight forward, so we do know it is a significant percentage of total CO2.

From my perspective the only argument you can make with any sense is about the sum of feedbacks, or possibly CO2 sensitivity. This argument that we can't possibly be affecting the climate because we are unable to control hurricanes is at best, illogical.

If your 'proof' of our ability to affect the climate includes proof we can change the direction of a hurricane, or stop a tsunami, then you are being intellectually dishonest.

We in fact do not have to change the climate directly, all we have to do is affect one small part and watch a cascade of events change the climate. Many things, including the evolution of intelligence, and the flow of climate, are the consequence of the accumulation of smaller, seemingly inconsequential changes. Feedbacks are ubiquitous.

Given that so far the only scientists proven to be dishonest/wrong were the UEA climatologists, UN IPCC authors etc. and given that those who refuse to take the word of people who have a credibility problem are themselves being called dishonest, I don't see a way of rationally convincing anyone.

A few decades ago there was a project called, I think, project "STORMFURY". The idea was to fly into a hurricane and seed it with silver iodide crystals, which affects the microphysics. This would lead to latent heat from crystallization farther from the eye which would ultimately lead to a weaker circulation. It seemed to work in a few cases, not so much in others. The idea was abandoned because people were worried about changing the track of the storm in unpredictable ways.

In 1985 the discussions went pretty similar. There were a fair share of denialists paid by the CFC-industry.

BUT action was taken, ozone-depleting substances were banned, nobody was hurt in the process and the ozone hole will now slowly close.
