Sunday Afternoon Music: Punch Brothers, ‘The Blind Leaving the Blind’

Music • Views: 3,475

Mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile’s band Punch Brothers is creating a new form of acoustic music, related to bluegrass but much deeper and more diverse, drawing on influences from classical, folk, jazz, and rock. Here’s a live performance of an excerpt from the four-part suite, “The Blind Leaving the Blind,” from the album Punch. (Here it is at the iTunes Store.)

What is the lead singer playing? It looks too small to be a guitar.

That's Chris Thile, one of the world's best mandolin players.

The tracks on the album are recorded great, the violin doesn't overwhelm the mandolin like it does on occasion in the video

Wow, this is a very complex bit of work. Bluegrass at the core yes, but you have to peel back layer after layer to get to it.

Good evening Charles, lizards.

Or Irish.

The mandolin and the bouzouki are very common instruments in traditional Irish music.

Just love the mandolin. It has a certain lightness to the sound.

What a pleasure to listen to some lovely music after my miserable day.

We went to see Avatar. I'd like to tell you it was a wonderful movie, but I couldn't bear it. We got there in enough time to get a good seat, but for some inexplicable reason, there was one man tearing tickets and half the food and candy registers had missing employees. Aventura Mall is one of the largest malls in Miami. This is a week before Christmas, the place was mobbed. No one wants a job?? We purchased our tix online so we wouldn't have to spend 25 minutes standing in line at the theatre, which we did anyway.

So we get into the theatre while the coming attractions are playing and the only seats available are the 3 front rows. I didn't realize it was 3D and I have this vertigo issue... well that's my thing. I think I would have done better further back. I've never sat so close to a screen, but the most God awful thing was the volume. I've been going to rock concerts all my young adult life. Very loud concerts and at age 40 I started to have hearing issues because of it, but never, ever was the noise like this. My chest shook for 3 hours. I stayed because it's the only day my husband and I have had off together in 6 months and he really wanted to see this movie, but I tell you, it was torture.

And the woman in front of us had her 3 year daughter there! I was beside myself. This is not a child's movie. There is a lot of killing, but if that isn't bad enough the noise was intolerable. It's child abuse. Hell, it was adult abuse.

As always as the end of the year approaches the "Top Ten" lists begin to appear, some thoughtful and some simply fatuous. This year we have a new and extremely ambitous list from the folks over at The Onion...

Top Ten Stories of the Last 4.5 Billion Years.

#1. Evolution Going Great, Reports Trilobyte.

#3. Woman Domesticated.

#5. Sumerians Look On In Confusion As God Creates World.

#6. Dinosaurs Sadly Extinct Before Invention Of Bazooka.

#7. Rat-Shit-Covered Physicians Baffled By Spread Of Black Plague.

#9. Fire, Setting Everything In Sight On Fire Discovered

I left out a few completely lame ones...

It did, but at least I can come online and bitch about it :p

The movie itself, what I managed to see of it, was spectacular. The plot is predictable though and I thought disappointing. 20 minutes in, you know exactly what's going to happen.

Tim Burton is doing an Alice in Wonderland remake coming this March. Johnny Depp is the Mad Hatter. Another 3Der, but I'll chose to go on a Weds night next time.

And why the sea is boiling hot—
And whether pigs have wings."

It's awful. There is no original thought anymore? I mean you can borrow ideas, everything's been done, but it's beyond that. We got cool special effects now so we don't need a story.

A loss of imagination? How could that be? You see the toys they have for kids? I try to buy my nieces and nephews toys that will stir their minds so I usually end up with crafts. While I adored lego as a kid, I would never buy it again. Here's the house, spaceship, car, just like you see on the box, now go build it. What is that?

But that's not an original story either. Jackson was the first director to make it so well because he followed the book very closely (except for that love affair thing Aragorn and Erowyn). And only because he was such a big fan of the books.

I agree about the lack of creativity from hollywood. Seems most big movies these days are based on a book, a franchise, or it's a remake. I really like Pixar for original films (even if they are cartoons!), and there are a few others I've come across like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but it does seem good movies are far between.

Alice too, but something worth seeing done well on screen.

I absolutely 100% refuse to see the remake of Miracle on 34th Street. It's my most favorite Xmas movie and the remake will ruin it for me.

No need for a remake. The original is perfect.

Funny. I'd never noticed it, until we were in an Applebees, and she was being silly and put her hair up, put on her "prom queen" tiara, her big sunglasses and said, come look at this...

The only remake that was quite possibly better than the original (debatable) but at least as equally good was The Body Snatchers IMO.

Danny Kaye was not a redhead, but he was gay

Producer Perry Lafferty reported: “People would ask me, ‘Is he gay? Is he gay?’ I never saw anything to substantiate that in all the time I was with him.”[3] Kaye’s final girlfriend, Marlene Sorosky, reported that he told her, “I’ve never had a homosexual experience in my life. I’ve never had any kind of gay relationship. I’ve had opportunities, but I never did anything about them.”[3]

re: #178 Walter L. Newton

He was suppose to be in Santa Fe Sat. night, but changed plans SAt. after leaving here and ended up in Taos Sat. night and tonight he is now in Santa Fe, and then on to Ca. tomorrow. I didn't get all the details of why he made the unscheduled Taos stop.

He posted about the Flamenco dancers last night.
Hmmmmm!
