Rainbow. It's subliminal. You know who else uses rainbow colors on their flag? GLAAD. It's being done to de-synthesize the population for the eventual overthrow of American Society by the GLBT Agenda.

They're starting in suburbia. See the whole picture. Lawns, watering, grass... rainbows and then eventually the Rainbow Flag.

Short version: you know those white condensation trails jets leave as they fly? They're also called contrails, and they're made of water vapor condensed from the atmosphere by the rapid expansion and adiabatic cooling of air as it passes over the wing. Various loons believe that they are loaded with mind-control chemicals, put there as part of an enormous plot between the shadowy powers that control everything and the airline industry, which actively collaborates in pumping million of gallons of...stuff...into the atmosphere on a daily basis to keep us all fat, dumb and happy.

Electro-chemical ionization. Creates an ionized atomic antenna over 1000s of square miles. This way the pocket protectors guys over at Dryden and Area 51 can remain in contact with The Aliens.

I've never posted on the Kos, and I've always been a conservative. But what I try not to be is an asshole. You popped in and proceeded to insult Charles (and by extension the people posting here) by decrying a "kos-like atmosphere' and calling LGF a trainwreck. I've seen a lot of people do that here since July and it always ends with Charles banning the person who insulted him on his own blog. Hence, I've got little to say to such a person, because they're about to be banned anyway.

Well, I went over to the thread to get an idea of what you were referring to, and I find this statement by you... "all he is is a man with a calculator desperately checking and rechecking every number that the climate scientists release and hoping and praying to find an error somewhere to crow about. The man is an obsessive whack-job."

Gee, I'm not even concerned if McIntyre (sp?) nows his ass from a hole in the ground, but your comment seems to indicate that he has found errors and asked for corrections. Considering your apparent concern for the science of all this, that seems to be a valid objective, to make sure the figures are as accurate as possible.

Can you clarify for me. Has McIntyre found actual errors in certain computations or not?

Iran Dismisses US Deadline For Nuke Deal

Iran's president has dismissed a year-end deadline set by the Obama administration for Teheran to accept a UN-drafted deal to swap enriched uranium for nuclear fuel.
The deal aims to diminish Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium, easing the West's fears that the material could be used to produce a nuclear weapon. Iran, which denies it seeks to build a bomb, has balked at the deal's terms.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that "if Iran wanted to make a bomb, we would be brave enough to tell you."
He said the West can give Iran "as many deadlines as they want, we don't care."
Ahmadinejad spoke on Tuesday to supporters in the southern city of Shiraz. He lashed out at Washington, saying Iran won't allow the US to dominate the region.

BO's sinking numbers

In today's Rasmussen presidential poll , only 26 percent of the nation's voters strongly approve of Barack Obama's performance as president, while 43 percent strongly disapprove - giving him a Presidential Approval Index rating, a sum calculated by subtracting the number of strong disapprovals from the number of strong approvals, of negative 17. His overall disapproval rating is 53 percent (it has been 50 percent or more for over a month). But it is the extraordinarily high proportion of those who strongly disapprove that bears noting.

In January, George W. Bush left office with a "Strongly Disapprove" rating of ... 43 percent. It took Bush eight years to achieve that level of strong disapproval, despite how the mainstream media pummeled him for years. Obama has reached that level in 11 months, despite a media that for months could not use his name in a sentence without also adding "Lincoln" and "FDR."

To appreciate the magnitude of Obama's ratings fall, consider that after his first full day in office, his presidential index was positive 30. Today's index of negative 17 reflects a swing of 47 points in less than a year.

A commenter at the Huffington Post today observes that Obama has "accomplished the remarkable feat of both demoralizing the base and completely turning off voters in the center." The president has also unified the Republican party and created a tea-party movement that in some polls is more popular than both the Democratic and Republican parties

If it's any consolation, I've been troubleshooting a problem with some of our point of purchase displays. They're becoming non-reactive over time (they use a special paper and cameras sensitive to the special ink in the special paper.)

I consulted with the printer, the software guys, tried various approaches and workarounds. Finally, I went to a store, and sat there watching people interact with one.

After a few hours, I saw a cleaning guy come up and spray the POP display down-- including the treated paper-- with a solvent and clean it off.

Yeah, that'll do it.

Someone in that thread posted that he had managed to get NASA to change their numbers by .17 of a degree and that little of a change amounted to nothing. Since the argument is the worlds temp has increased by .7, a change of .17 is ~22%, that's quite a difference.

Interesting.

I never got an answer from Ausador early this morning. Ausador acted like there was something wrong with McIntyre (sp?) because he actually did find some faults with someone's figures... as Ausador stated...

"all he is is a man with a calculator desperately checking and rechecking every number that the climate scientists release and hoping and praying to find an error somewhere to crow about. The man is an obsessive whack-job."

Obsessive or not, right or wrong or not about AGW, AGW denier or not, I don't care, that's not the point. If he has contributed nothing to the process, then he is a obsessive whack-job. But if McIntyre actually found some problems, pointed them out and someone made necessary adjustments, then guess what, that's science.

I wanted a clarification. Did McIntyre find some problems or not? That's what I asked Ausador. Never got an answer, from anyone.

These 60 senators have joined in what surely ranks among the most breathtakingly arrogant spasms of anti-democratic hubris in American legislative history. By every credible measure of public opinion, opposition to Obamacare has grown for months as people learned more about it. Fully 61 percent of those responding to CNN's most recent survey turned thumbs down on Obamacare. And still these 60 senators opted to thumb their noses at the majority.

Goodbye and good riddance:

In October, Jagels told the Bakersfield Californian that after 26 years in office, he won't be running for reelection in 2010. Good riddance to him.
...
But if history dispenses justice more honorably than Ed Jagels ever did, the boyish-looking D.A. will be most remembered for his role ruining countless lives in perhaps the most shameful of the Reagan-era "tough on crime" debacles: the coast-to-coast sex abuse panic of the 1980s.
...
Instead, Jagels set his sights on Kern County's lower middle class. Relying on suggestive police and social worker interrogations of children, Jagels' office put 26 people behind bars on felony child sex abuse charges in the 1980s and ‘90s. Of those 26 convictions, 25 have since been overturned.

The 6-qt. KitchenAid stand mixer is a ripoff!

I have owned a 5-qt KitchenAid stand mixer for since forever. It is faithful to me and I had a tune-up two years ago and it runs like new. My only complaint is that the bowl can not handle more than 8 cups of bread flour at a time.

I thought I would get the new KitchenAid with the larger bowl, but before spending all that money, I went to Amazon.com to check out the customer reviews.

Well, KitchenAid did indeed make a mixer with a larger bowl, BUT, they kept the same size motor. Which means that if you put more than 8 cups of flour in the bowl, the motor overheats and shorts out.

I think I'll keep my old mixer.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I see that Bloomberg and Paterson are on the same page with Obamacare; they both see it as a huge hit to the state and city budgets because NY has been overly generous with the health care benefits for decades, and because the NY delegation played loyal soldier, they didn't get a better deal by holding out. So, NY will be screwed to the tune of billions in the long run - billions the state doesn't have because of structural deficits as far as the eye can see.

Meanwhile, on the Left Coast, we've got Sen. Feinstein proposing turning prime land for solar and wind power projects into a national monument precisely to thwart the construction of those alt-energy projects. How can anyone take these people seriously when it comes to renewable energy sources when they purposefully try to deprive siting them in locations that are best suited to provide them - desert climates that have low populations, are fairly close to population centers, and which are blessed by tons of sun?

Bill Nelson of Florida got some cash. But he could have gotten more by holding out.

248 lawhawk  Tue, Dec 22, 2009 6:42:09am

re: #234 Obdicut

It's Obamacare because whatever he signs into law will be by his hand. It will be a reflection on him to "reform" health care, even if it blows up. He's the one who was pushing this, and then let Congress run wild. There are two subsets - Pelosicare and Reidcare, but the conference version will go to the President for signature, when he will own it. His mess. And our cost.

As to the costs, it has to do with Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements to the states. The Senate plan tries to wring out savings by cutting Medicare more than the House plan. That's how they're getting it "under" the self-imposed budget cap. Of course, everyone in Congress realizes that dealing with Medicare/Medicaid financing will need to be done in a separate bill, which isn't incorporated into the CBO cost estimates for the health care bill.

Nelson got a great deal for Nebraska by holding out; they wont have to pay a dime for Medicare in the state under the Senate plan; NY has to pay 50% of its costs (and quite likely more than that), all because NY has been providing that level of care all along (and which creates a whole different set of problems for NY since the State can't afford even that level of funding).

Yes, like Obdicut trying to blame the whole senate health care bill on the right. See his #252

268 lawhawk  Tue, Dec 22, 2009 6:48:16am

re: #252 Obdicut

Democrats had no interest in bipartisan work on the bill because they had the numbers to get it done without 'em in the House or Senate. Pelosi pushed her own version and a straight party vote got it done.

Things got squirrely in the Senate because some started seeing their electoral hopes go up in smoke if they didn't play hardball. So Reid was forced to court people like Snowe and Collins to get them on board, since they needed 60 for cloture and Lieberman and a few others were pushing their own interests in opposing the bill as conceived.

It was, and always has been, a numbers game. Democrats didn't need to court the GOP, and the GOP has been outside this process from the get-go. That's how the Democrat leadership played it, because if they started cooperating with the GOP in any serious fashion, the left/liberal wing would have pitched a fit. As it is, they're pitching a fit precisely because of what transpired in the Senate over the past few days, and curiously, the Left is throwing out the same arguments as those on the right have been doing for some time.

The proposed bills are unaffordable and will end up costing far more than anyone anticipated.

I missed this story yesterday, the Rain Man died.

[Link: www.sltrib.com...]

Kim Peek, Murray man who inspired 'Rain Man', dies

The condition left him able to retain nearly 98 percent of everything he read, heard or watched on television. The average person only retains about 45 percent.

As both a child and adult, Peek's favorite place was the library, where he devoured books at a confounding rate. At the time of his death, Peek is believed to have committed at least 9,000 books to memory. He could recite so many gigabytes of facts that people often called him Kim-puter. NASA made him the subject of MRI-based research.

re: #254 Obdicut

The Senate version is the one that will likely get adopted, even the Daily News article I cited in my posting reflects as much (the NY delegation admits as much). It may get tweaked here and there, but the end result of the mess from Congress will be Obamacare. If the House version got adopted, I too would call it Obamacare. In the end, whatever gets adopted by Congress will be Obamacare, whether we like it or not because there's no chance that Obama will actually veto whatever health care bill is put before him.

Amazing. Guess what, Obama and the left owns this, lock, stock and both barrels.

289 Feline Emperor of the Conservative Waste  Tue, Dec 22, 2009 7:01:18am

Is a middle ground possible in this particular issue?

Essentially neither the left nor the right screwed up health care reform. It was instead screwed up by the entrenched interests that had deep enough pockets and thus influence to poison the bits they really disliked, pork barrel pieces that they wanted in, and are also quite willing to have the whole thing fail and leave the status quo in place.

And having it turn out a Congressional debacle is fine with them since that will mean that the issue won't be touched again for at least eight more years.

On a related issue I think Obama is leaking independent support because he got independent support as a potential game-changer Washington. That is not panning out, so the support is dropping. However, I think that anyone assuming that this lost support will turn Republican by default is deluding themselves. Obama has been more pragmatic than many thought, and that doesn't surprise me. Once you get more information, better briefings, and are on the firing line yourself the moderate paths seem more desirable, and some of the previous policies make more sense.

All in all since the election Obama has not disappointed me that much. Congress, on the other hand, has managed to be more dysfunctional than ever and disappointed me a great deal. There is a difference between politics and leadership, and we lack the latter in too many places.

Hmm, my opinion on the political parties in the US is rapidly turning into "a pox on both their houses." (That should draw a Whig Party comment for Ojoe shortly...)

Yea that comment is chopped liver if that's your proof of him casting blame on Republicans. Are you really pretending you don't know what the subject of a sentence is?

Then they (Dems and Obama) started giving away the farm to court Republicans who were never ever going to vote for it anyway.

Here let me use a different sentence to demonstrate...

Locker wasted his whole day cutting grass that was never going to stop growing anyway.

Ok so am I blaming the grass for wasting the day or am I blaming Locker? Is Obdicut blaming the Republicans or is he blaming Obama and the Dems?

I think they are purposefully lying.

The Congressional Budget office is projecting numbers based on what the bill states and what Congress tells them. The bill says that Congress is going to slash medicare payments to doctors.

Now me, you, and the man in the moon (and all the little green men from Mars) know that cut won't happen - but that's the baseline CBO has to work with, so that's the projection they make.

300 lawhawk  Tue, Dec 22, 2009 7:07:36am

re: #289 oaktree

I don't think so when you look at the fact that the Democrats had the numbers to push whatever agenda they wanted on the strength of a filibuster proof majority in the House and Senate. With those numbers, they could do whatever they wanted. Reid and Pelosi both came up with health care bills that do not reflect their stated goal of reducing costs - since the cost will not change, only who pays for the costs as they continue rising. The taxes and fees will shift the costs of the premiums from the individual onto the taxpayer so that they'll still be paying for it (in taxes) and in increased debt into the future.

The GOP, even if they came up with the perfect health care plan, couldn't get it passed precisely because they lack the numbers to make it happen.

Bipartisan work on this bill wasn't going to happen, especially because of the liberal wing of the Democrats, who saw anything watering down their cherished goals as a dealbreaker.

The health care bill has revealed quite a few fracture points among the Democrats.

OT:
Looks like the robust growth in 3Q 2009 wasn't.

First it was 3.3%. Then it was 2.8%. Now, it was 2.2%, and that's nearly entirely due to the cash for clunkers goosing of auto sales during the quarter, rather than any actual improvement in the retail sector.

Economists had figured that 3Q figure would remain unchanged at 2.8%.

They were wrong.

The economists surveyed by Thomson Reuters figure that there will be robust growth in the 4th Quarter, but I think that they're going to be seriously disappointed. Sales at bricks and mortars has been off, and the Noreaster this weekend seriously hit the retailers here as store traffic was down over the last weekend prior to Christmas.

I wish them all the luck in the world - they're gonna need it! UAW no longer provides checks and balances to ensure fair working conditions. They have shifted the balance to the workers at the detriment of the companies, which, in the long haul, hurts the workforce as a whole.

As a side note, I've often wondered why the right to collective bargaining necessarily involves formal union organizations. Couldn't employees of a company do this as needed (like single issue bargaining) without becoming beholden to a union? I know my understanding of how this works is woefully lacking.

Couldn't employees of a company do this as needed (like single issue bargaining)

The company i work for has about 5,000 employees around the world, with another 5k contractors, and
A) we're not unionized
B) we've done exactly that (negotiate basic working/compensation/benefit parameters)

Snow... snow... snow... tonight, Wed and thru Thursday... 5- 10 inches in the Denver area... could actually be a little less up here in the mountains west of Denver, since it's a up slope eastern side of the state storm... blizzard on the plains and east... stay away from Kansas if possible.

Walter, I'm just remembering. A few years back I spent a week in North Dakota late November. Until that trip I never really understood 'blizzard on the plains'. With the wind, snow and chill factor it can truly be life threatening, and quickly. Just remembering.

I visited the mall and several other retailers over the weekend, and they were dead across the board. Not a good sign the weekend before Christmas - everyplace is normally packed, and parking at the mall is atrocious. This year, I parked practically in front of the main entrance.

Polls, too, seem to indicate that consumers aren't going to be consuming much this season.

The recovery, such as it is, hasn't yet begun to trickle down to employees yet. People are cautious, and they're going to remain so until they see tangible signs of improvement. Now, though, they're hanging on to what they have in case it starts raining all over them.

As some of you know, I have been looking for almost any sort of employment, and retail is one of the places I looked. I sort of failed the test at one place I interviewed. I was asked if "the customer is always right...?" and I figured I would go with a reasonable middle of the road answer... "I suspect it depends on the corporate model. I guess in some cases there may be something situation that could make the company libel for something, and then maybe the customer would have to be reigned back in..."

Wrong answer, all around. The interviewer told me... "at the supper table, at night, back home, when I talk about certain customers, they may really be wrong, at the store, they are always right..."

I don't agree... er, I didn't get the job.

It's a step in the right direction, but it doesn't address why the planes leave the gate in the first place - to maintain their on time departure statistics and to get in queues for takeoff. The drive to maintain on time departures (and padded schedules that allow for delays on both departure and arrival) has led to a situation where planes will sit away from the gate.

There will be an incentive for airlines to try and reduce delays to avoid getting hit with the $27k per passenger hit. I just worry about the unintended consequences of such actions.

re: #168 _RememberTonyC

Here's an interesting take on Joe Lieberman from Dana Milbank of the Washington Post:

[Link: www.washingtonpost.com...]

Joe is my senator and I like how he represents me. He is beholden to neither party, which pisses off the leftist partisans for whom I have very little use. I hope he KEEPS pissing them off, as long as his positions continue to be pragmatic, mature, and correct.

Interesting:

The story now is that Lieberman, bitter about losing his Democratic primary in 2006, has shifted to the right with the goal of "torturing" liberals on health care and other issues. The narrative is as satisfying as it is pervasive. It's also wrong.

This is interesting too:

Those who accuse Lieberman of a recent right turn have probably forgotten that in his first campaign for Senate he secured the endorsement of William F. Buckley in defeating a liberal Republican, Lowell Weicker. Lieberman criticized Weicker for opposing U.S. military actions and accused him of trying to raise taxes.

And I liked this part:

Lieberman has always defied party orthodoxy on highly visible issues: cuts in the capital gains tax, vouchers for private schools, partial privatization of Social Security, limits on jury awards and George H.W. Bush's military actions. He worked closely with Bill Bennett and threatened Hollywood with "legal restrictions on their freedom." In 1998, he supported California's Proposition 209, restricting affirmative action. His heresies have continued in recent years, including his kisses for George W. Bush and the Iraq war -- and, after Democrats drummed him out of the party, his support for John McCain.

Thanks for this link, Tony. Next time I hear whining about Lieberman trying to get revenge because of Lamont, I will remember this.

My shopping's done at that point, so there's no pressure, sometimes I pick up a stocking stuffer or other impulse buy, but mostly I'm there for the holiday buzz - and to be as nice as I can be to the clerks, who by that point in the season are running pretty ragged.

Compared to past years, it was dead quiet. Probably not a good sign.

I don't agree, and I can give you a practical example. At the theatre I work at, it is a 136 seat theatre, 3/4 round, meaning seating on 3 sides.

Our acting deck is about 3 inches high, surrounded by a 2 foot high "knee wall" with a break on the right and left for actors entrances from the aisles. We have signs up "Please do not cross the stage."

Our producer will not say something to them if they DO cross the stage. He takes the "customer is always right" tact.

But, if a customer fell on the stage, tripped over a prop or a piece of stage furniture, right or wrong, it would be a major corporate hassle for us.

If a patron walks across the stage and moves something, it could injure an actor making an entrance during a blackout.

And I have even had audience members take PROPS from the stage as they cross.

I don't agree, the customer is not always right and sometimes they must be told they are wrong.

re: #407 SixDegrees

I went about noon. But I should explain that I do this every year, and I do it for the crowds.

I should mention that I'm talking about the Detroit suburbs. Michigan leads the nation in unemployment, and has for a few years now. The rate is something like 17% statewide, and in Detroit proper it's around 30% - 35%. Depression-era stuff.

Wowsers. I saw a video of Detroit yesterday showing all the empty fields, houses at various levels of decrepitness, etc. Scary looking.

I saw that.

Why I keep telling people who are on the "AGW" bandwagon big-time to go vegetarian.

They aren't on the bandwagon that big-time.

The whole thing is absurd, and I'm not talking about the science. We will just have to adapt like we always have and tackle the problem when it presents itself in a serious manner. I'm not getting rid of my dogs and going veggie because parts of Bangladesh might go underwater in 300 years just because Mother Gaia weirdos tell me so. Screw them. They don't even take into consideration the man made advancements in energy production and other technologies that will "naturally" come along over that time frame, whether or not it is mandated or not by a bunch of money grabbing politicians in the worthless UN or other governmental bodies.

Which some customers use to their advantage. But, it is what it is.

I can't stand customers who bitch about price. It is what it is, ain't nothing I can do about what the market charges, we are in line with the market.

Real conversation...

Customer "25,000.00 to remodel my kitchen? Hell, I only paid 35,000.00 for the house in 1971! That's stupid!"

Me "Sir, I'll give you 36,000.00 for this house right now, no questions asked. You'll make a thousand dollar profit!"

Customer "That would be stupid too, this house is worth 10 times that!"

Me "Then would it be stupid for someone to expect me to sell them a kitchen for what it would have cost in 1971?"

Customer "I guess so. Why does it cost so much?...

Sometimes I just run out of the house with my sample cases screaming...

Stupid that people thought of him in that way, and stupid if it really was the case. I didn't think it was, and your post makes me think I was right.

He's the McCain of the left and gets vilified almost as bad as McCain has been in the past. I liked how the writer of that piece listed off a bunch of the criticisms Lieberman got in the 90s. Sounds the same as now, and those trying to paint him otherwise look petty.

Don't tell me about adaptation when the shining lights of the Democrats are busy trying to thwart the very kind of adaptation that is needed to wean us off coal and oil.

Oh, it's all well and good that she wants to preserve a million acres of land as a national monument, but she's doing it precisely to thwart construction of 13 large wind and solar power projects that would help provide power to California and allow it to meet the state's alt-energy goals. That means she's putting the preservation of the land ahead of the jobs and clean energy resulting from those projects. Way to go Feinstein.

I have my questions, I have my opinions and I am skeptical that this will work, but I can honestly say if it becomes law, it better work.

Here, I'll make it easy for you. It will fail by default as all other grandiose federal entitlements have. As with the rest, we will end up with two systems, one paid for by people directly far superior to the government run disaster, and one for everyone else also funded by the same people already paying their own way, essentially making them pay twice.

The people in the government program will not like the fact that those in the private sector get better treatment even if they're paying for it on their own, because that's so unfair and everything. So, they will demand that government level the playing field even more and the result will be even worse care for them and most likely worse care for those footing the bill as well.

The overall level of services will decline, costs will go through the roof, and no one will be happy except the thieves and liars on Capitol Hill and their massive number of underlings in the bureaucracy who will come up with even more outstanding ideas to fix the fix ad infinitum.

U.S. stock futures point to firmer start

Futures for the major indexes maintained modest gains after the government report the U.S. economy grew at the fastest pace in two years during the third quarter, but the revised annual growth rate of 2.2% was much slower than first reported.

"The general idea that the economy is recovering but recovering at a slower pace than history might suggest remains unchanged. The main thrust of today's data is to help us with Q4 GDP estimates. Q4 remains on track to show expansion of around 4%," said Dan Greenhaus, chief economic strategist, Miller Tabak.

Then the current bill should make both the left and right politicians in Washington exceptionally happy since it has mainly become a payoff to drug companies, insurance companies and loaded with special favors for certain states.

Hey folks... Obdicut says abortion coverage is still in the Senate bill...

From Ezra Klien, who has become my HCRbill go to guy:

") Massive restriction on a woman's right to choose, designed to trigger a challenge to Roe v. Wade in the Supreme Court.

The Senate bill is better than the House bill on this score, but it's still disappointing. That said, the restriction here is not on the right to choose, but on whether primary insurance covers abortion. In the House bill, the exchanges can't offer primary insurance that covers abortion. In the Senate bill, individual states can choose to bar abortion from their exchanges, but it is not the default."

It also says women can buy a rider that they pay for with their own money for expanded reproductive insurance coverage.
Of course no one getting medicaid or $$ to pay for their insurance would be able to have an abortion using that insurance.

re: #492 Killgore Trout

The economists who got the 3Q figures wrong - they figured it would stay at 2.8 instead of revised down to 2.2% are saying that the 4Q is going to be stronger at 4%? Sorry, but I think that's a whole lot of wishful thinking on their part. There isn't anything to really indicate a recovery of that magnitude. Retail sales are down, the noreaster on the final weekend before Christmas hit sales in the Northeast, and it took cash for clunkers and the homeowner tax credit to goose the sales for the 3Q. Cash for clunkers is by the boards, and the expanded homeowner tax credit may help some, but most people aren't buying homes in the winter - they usually start looking in earnest in the spring.

I suspect 4Q figures are going to be grim. I wish that wasn't the case, but there isn't much evidence to suggest a turnaround, particularly when the economy simply isn't creating jobs and businesses are holding tight on new employment/expansion. Consumers are holding tight as well, and credit is tight because banks don't want to get burned again by the fast and loose credit even as interest rates are near historic lows to goose the real estate market further to encourage sales.

Griffith’s party switch comes on the eve of a pivotal congressional health care vote and will send a jolt through a Democratic House Caucus that has already been unnerved by the recent retirements of a handful of members who, like Griffith, hail from districts that offer prime pickup opportunities for the GOP in 2010.

Good for him. It looks as if he had good reasons to go over to the dark side...
"Griffith, who captured the seat in a close 2008 open seat contest, will become the first Republican to hold the historically Democratic, Huntsville-based district. There is a large piece of pork in the Senate called the health care bill, which I am very disappointed at the left about, since they caved into the drug companies, the insurance companies and a lot of other special interest. I was hoping for change, not this bill, which could almost look like it was crafted by the evil right.

I was hoping for something to be settled at Copenhagen, but nothing was, just some silly non-binding glad-handing. Where they could have walked away with "law" as they promised, as they said they had to have, they walked away with nothing that can hold their feet to the fire.

I wanted a clarification. Did McIntyre find some problems or not? That's what I asked Ausador. Never got an answer, from anyone.

Steven Mcintyre found one very small problem in some US records from the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) dataset. The GISS corrected the error with a few days. The problem McIntyre uncovered made no difference to the overall data, but of course climate change deniers tried to use it to discredit everything. It's what they do.

However, McIntyre has also been caught numerous times distorting and misrepresenting the work of climatologists, and he has numerous ties to the energy industries. Oddly enough.

And no, the "hockey stick" graph was NOT discredited by McIntyre. This is another case in which the deniers are lying to you. In the real world, two independent reviews of the data that led to the hockey stick graph has absolutely vindicated it, and it's since been corroborated and duplicated using completely different data sources.

If you search LGF for McIntyre's name you'll find several posts about his dishonest tactics. And I've now linked several times to this ScienceBlogs search:

Prince William spends night on London streets

A cold alley in central London is a far cry from a palace — but it was the spot Prince William chose to sleep to highlight the plight of homeless British teenagers.

He spent a chilly night near Blackfriars Bridge last week with Seyi Obakin, the chief executive of British homeless charity Centrepoint. William has been the charity's patron since 2005.

"I cannot, after one night, even begin to imagine what it must be like to sleep rough on London's streets night after night," William said Tuesday. "Poverty, mental illness, drug and alcohol dependancy and family breakdown cause people to become and then stay homeless.

"I hope that by deepening my understanding of the issue, I can help do my bit to help the most vulnerable on our streets."

He's turning out like him Mum. He's certainly in a position to do some good in this world, and I hope he does- he's his mother's son.

Let's see... I didn't know what exact study Ausador was talking about, since it seemed he/she was relating something that others understood. I simply asked for a clarification.

A clarification that suddenly got me dancing around answers off and on through out the thread, and not once did I get a simple answer like I asked for.

Not until a little while ago.

I never mentioned anything about hockey stick graphs, did I? Didn't even ask about it. I didn't even know that McIntyre had anything to do with trying to discredit the hockey stick graph. No one is lying to me since I don't know anything about the graph and wasn't even asking or talking about it.

But anyway, it seems that you have backed up an earlier answer to my question. McIntyre was responsible for correcting some AGW related data. That's all I asked.

Reminds me of stories I heard from park rangers, when cellphones become more common. Tenderfoot townies would get into minor trouble in the woods and call the park station: "Help, I sprained my wrist. Send a helicopter!"

They should get in our local helicopter rescue guy. It's his own copter. A couple of years ago, when he had to pick up a couple of my students after a hike gone awry, he warned them that if they threw up in his helicopter he would put them right back down in the brush.

Maybe it says something about me - perhaps it's some sort of twisted synesthesia deal - but every time I hear Bing Crosby's "White Christmas," I have this image, like a scene from a movie:

It's a guy - late 40's, several days' stubble on his face - sitting at a crappy walnut-stained birch table. There's dingy green carpet on the floor, the walls are some sorta dirty yellowish mess from years of heavy indoor smoking, a bare bulb burns in a lamp without a shade in the corner behind his left shoulder.

On the table in front of him is an ashtray overflowing with butts, a couple old newspapers, a paper cup full of cigarette butts, a fifth with about two fingers of bourbon left in it. He's wearing a Santa Claus hat, the white trim streaked and soiled, the red felt matted and worn in places. He's staring at something about a half-mile away, on the other side of the wall, unblinking.

Honestly, every freakin' time I hear that song, that's the image I get.

PAY FOR YOU OWN HEALTH CARE SOMETIMES. That is radical. Break out the flying pig; PJM denounces the Birch society (sort of)...
CPAC: Consciously Providing Ammo to Critics

By having the John Birch Society sponsor it, CPAC can guarantee that 90% of the coverage regarding the conference will relate to JBS’ oh-my-god-look-a-conspiracy attitude rather than the heavy-hitters and rising stars of conservatism and libertarianism that speak there. Instead of focusing on politics, reporters will ask attendees for their response to the JBS controversy and will ask organizers whether they are in such financial distress that they had to embrace a fringe group for support.
...
many decent people are still part of JBS, some of whom don’t fully accept its theories. They are anti-globalist, favor a U.S. withdrawal from the United Nations, are socially conservative, and want to dramatically reduce spending and the size of government. With the Republican Party viewed by many conservatives as having betrayed its principles, it’s not a surprise that a group would be embraced as long as it is upholding conservative ideals, even if it has some wacky theories.

Of course they are. And that article isn't really condemning the Birch Society -- it's saying it was a bad political move to have them cosponsor CPAC. It's similar to the PLO's condemnations of terrorism because it "hurts the cause" -- not because there's anything inherently wrong with it.

And it's written by Ryan Mauro of the Christian Action Network -- a completely insane far right group that's been the subject of several LGF posts.

I was in high school school back then, but all I remember of Sen. Lieberman from the 90s were frequent hearings and press conferences, often joining a group of Republicans, to lambast media sex and violence. My impression of him back then was as someone trying to effect general media censorship, not just on content consumed by children. One specific proposal, I recall, would have made it impossible for violent video games to advertise in gaming publications, even if a majority of their readership were adults.

(Which is fairly funny, because my coverage is through my job right now, and does not include abortion, or birth control...but that was the understanding when I took the job, and I'm OK with it.)

You're talking to the guy from the country that doesn't actually have any laws regarding abortion. Better believe I think you should be able to buy an insurance package that includes abortion. Oddly enough, since they're considered an elective surgery in most cases, they generally cost about $600 in Canada from my understanding. No idea if any of the private insurance plans cover them, as most of the people I know who have had them didn't tell their folks.

No, I always sorta pictured this guy as looking like Nixon, for some reason. I think the stubble needs jowls and deep lines on the face. Guy's gotta look like Fate, Karma, and Khismet (attorneys at law) have been kicking his ass pretty regularly for at least the past decade or so.

How do you know this didn't start during their last incarnation?

/

Theosophists for instance will preach an obviously attractive idea like re-incarnation; but if we wait for its logical results, they are spiritual superciliousness and the cruelty of caste. For if a man is a beggar by his own pre-natal sins, people will tend to despise the beggar. But Christianity preaches an obviously unattractive idea, such as original sin; but when we wait for its results, they are pathos and brotherhood, and a thunder of laughter and pity; for only with original sin we can at once pity the beggar and distrust the king.

Wow. I'm impressed.

However, cautious type that I am, I like having medical insurance, and since I pay good money for it, I would like to be able to not have various medical procedures exempted from it for ideological reasons.

I have medical insurance, lots of it. I simply choose not to have regular dental coverage. For me, I usually go three times per year to the dentist for cleaning and once for xrays. Total cost about $300. Cash price. Reflects a discount for paying cash. Funny how that works. This filling re-do will probably cost about $200 or so, I don't know for sure. Even with that this year, cheaper than insurance premiums and deductibles and all of that.

When I get a sinus infection as I'm prone to get, I go to a walk-in no appointment needed doctor in a Vietnamese community here in San Diego and pay $25, that's right, $25 for an office visit to get my Z-Pak for another $10. He doesn't even accept insurance or checks or credit cards.

But, I'm admittedly a dinosaur. I do not immediately view my neighbors as being responsible for paying my bills.

It's also interesting to notice the article in the context of the other articles on the front page of PJM; Claiming healthcare reform is a conspiracy for Obama to become a dictator tyrant, global warming conspircies, Avatar is some propaganda device. Possibly a dumb question, but for the $100 cleaning/x-rays (I'm assuming $300/3), how much would insurance generally be billed for that? Because that's what I would pay cash for here, and the same price my insurance gets billed. Whats the markup like in the States?

Have you tried taking the mirror down :)) /

or this one:

Of more immediate concern, those under siege in Gaza face another winter of intense personal suffering. I visited Gaza after the devastating January war and observed homeless people huddling in makeshift tents, under plastic sheets, or in caves dug into the debris of their former homes. Despite offers by Palestinian leaders and international agencies to guarantee no use of imported materials for even defensive military purposes, cement, lumber, and panes of glass are not being permitted to pass entry points into Gaza.
