More contemporary than my usual selections:

I've heard that Waits hated This is Spinal Tap because so many scenes in it reminded him of horrible tours he had.

Frank's Wild Years is one of my all time favorite albums. And The Holmes Brothers do the most amazing cover of "Train Song" I've ever heard. Hope they do it when we open for them.

Yes, all of them. The one ice-fishing with Dafoe was my favorite, when Dafoe kept creepily asking if the could zip the sleeping bags together.

Waits was friends with Mull before that interview, by the way, so Mull knew exactly what was going to go down.

A Different Christmas Poem:

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.
"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."
"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.

Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."
"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."
Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

This band is on Itunes. 2 albums. Crossed Keys, and they just released a new album. Lots of acoustic to get out of Jaime's way vocal wise. Firecracker on stage, quiet and smart off stage. I photograph them as often as I can-Hard Rock Hollywood and The Key Club.

If you like B&W

Cool, I'll reserve judgement then : )

Good group. A couple licks remind me of Hubert Sumlin. Bit of funk and jazz as well.

It's a beautiful song. But on Frank's Wild Years, I think Innocent When you Dream and Train Song are move moving. I really wish I could find a clip of the Holmes Brothers doing Train Song. Imagine three amazing soul/r&b/gospel voices harmonizing on that song with just a piano backing them. Goosebumps.

Nah. I scattered about half a cup of oats on the ground and grated some of the carrot and put the rest of each down the disposer. I even moved the kindling about a bit and moved the grate away from the hearth. Right now I'm working on Santa's thank you letter--block letters with a bit of soot smudged on the paper. Another Festivus story...

You know, I did it my way. I think the old-fashioned term was the "school of hard knocks." Two days after I got out of high school in 1970, I started work as a office boy. An office boy, with all the image that the title carries with it, at Beneficial Finance headquarters. Get the company president his favorite cigars, hand run 3-4 million dollar checks into NYC to personally deposit, the whole office boy nine yards, like you've seen in the old movies.

I was in credit/finance for 7 years and then, after moving from the east coast to Texas, the State of Texas apprenticed me to a company to learn how to design printed circuit boards. While at that company, I had access to mainframe computers and the first thing called a PC. I self-taught myself to program that mainframe and PC.

And from there I went on to a career as a computer programmer, working full time, paying all my bills, AAA+ credit, a few marriages... the whole shooting match.

And during all those years I supplemented my career with my second love, entertainment. Working part time in live theatre, as a magician, a clown, played keyboards for 12 years straight with numerous "bar bands" on many weekends and writing some plays and having them published. A vocation and a advocation, good for the head and good for the soul.

Things changed five years ago, was laid off, a divorce and I had to take off and on contract programming work, still supplementing some of my salary with entertainment gigs, especially live theatre, and finally two years ago, I went on salary part time at a theatre, from 82 thousand a year to under 15 grand. But I was happy to be doing what I needed to do. I had been working off and on with this theatre for 10 years and they were family to me.

In Sept. 2009 the theatre cut my small salary by 55 percent, and I started to actively seek ANY sort of employment, since that was not enough money to even take care of my downsized life style.

Finally after 5 years of part time work, today I was offered and I accepted a full time retail job, at almost twice what I now make at the theatre, with full benefits after 30 days. A Christmas present to me?

Sort of. I had to resign from the theatre, resign from working with a group of people that I dearly love, and the theatre was the last "vestige" of what my life was over the past 20 years. This was a final break with a past that has now vanished.

I met a wonderful woman almost a year ago. I have a wonderful new family now, a new job, new adventures and the get up and go to go ahead and start again, a new game with new players.

But I have to be honest and say I feel numb right now, sort of hovering between two places. I've been here before, between the old and the new, the stogy familiar and the enticing unknown but it's never easy, is it?

Merry Christmas.

That's kinda cool Walter!. Retail is a lot of fun, really and, in a way, you get to act --leave your personal hat at the door and don the company hat as you walk in. There is alot of theatre in retail --staging the merchanise, etc. You'll do well.

“To all our men and women in uniform spending the holidays far from home—whether it’s at a base here in the states, a mess hall in Iraq or a remote outpost in Afghanistan, know that you are in our thoughts and our prayers,” President Obama said. “And this holiday season—and every holiday season—know that we are doing everything in our power to make sure you can succeed in your missions and come home safe to your families.”

Amen Mr. Pesident

We have a "Candy Cane Lane" near here. They do this, with set hours. Personally, I wouldn't live there, but I guess, you know the score if you buy a house on Candy Cane Lane!

My nieces & nephew call me "the Grinch" since when we drive by one of those decorated houses, I always say "hey look! He works for the electric company!"

My mom is always the toughest person to find just the right gift for. She already has everything she needs or wants so you have to think outside the box to come up with something good. So this year we made a Scrabble board with all 18 grandkids' names glued in place around the board like it was a real game and mounted the board on a nice frame. (not so easy to figure out how to arrange all the names) Had to go on eBay and buy 4 sets of letters to get enough "J"'s. It turned out really nice. Even managed to sneak in GRANDMAS PUZZLE on the bottom row. Ha. Every year its kind of a competition with the 7 kids to see who will get her the thing she likes the most. I think my wife and I have a chance at it this year.

It's time for me to get to bed. Merry Christmas to most of you. I would wish Happy Hanukkah to my fellow Jewish lizards, but that is over (I think.)

So happy holidays everyone, this year has been great. I'll save my post about how nice it has been talking to all of you this year until next week (but not on New Year's Eve since I have a gig.)

Have fun tomorrow, eat well, drink a lot (if you want to), make any kids around joyous, be good to your friends and family, go to church (if you want to), shovel snow if you have to and have a great time!

God Bless You!

And if you don't like what I'm posting, go piss up a rope!

This area a few blocks from where I live has become famous for having all the houses done up every year. People come from all over SD County to see them. This video doesn't really do it justice though.

Me too. I have a very thin and spread out family. Getting together for holidays happens pretty much never now. This is also my first post-breakup-with-the-ex-fiancee Christmas and I had to work today on top of it all. So I've been trying to live vicariously through others today with limited success. I think it's finally starting to work as I don't feel like going to bed and sleeping for a week for no physical reason now.

My father actually does work for the power company. I cant remember a time when I was a kid that we ever had outdoor lights at all. I know he definitely doesn't do it now. He's a total Grinch.

I was envisioning Beck and Palin going head to head, running neck and neck for Idiotarian of the year. I thought for sure Beck would be the solid run-away winner this year, but Palin's put in an incredible late year rally that is impressive, you betcha. She might just be dumber than Beck!

Seems sad we might not have such a battle at LGF this year... :(
