ugustus, that all the world should be taxed.
2.And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.
3. And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
4. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
5. To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
6. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
7. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
8. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men
15. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger
17. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
18. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
19. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
20. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
21. And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

The Taliban are going end up like Germany and Japan in World War II: They're going to lose, badly. Merry Christmas to all, and I hope some Talibs get a Hellfire as a surprise present today.
Here's a bit of Christmas poetry from The Forgotten War, 59 years ago:
T'was the night before Christmas
and all thru the tent
was the odor of diesel
since the stovepipe was bent.
The stockings were hung
rather close to the fire
in hopes that by morning
they'd be somewhat drier.
The squad was asleep
bundled up in their sacks
and dreaming of goodies
like cookies and snacks,
Like crispy fried chicken
straight out of the South
and a midwestern steak
that would melt in your mouth.
When out on the hill
there arose such a clatter..
a Commie machine gun
had started to chatter,
The Sgt. Grabowski
appeared at the door
"People", he yelled,
"get your feet on the floor,
Grab rifles and flares
and bring me a BAR,
you're climbing that hill
but you ain't goin' far,
Let everyman here
take along a grenade,
and when you get back
don't expect a parade,
I've had it to here
with this damn nightly riot,
So we're gonna make sure
that tomorrow it's quiet".
Then off we went hunting,
Us seven through snow
On a night where the wind
made it twenty below.
Now, Allen and Russell
and Clyde McElroy
had the priviledge of being
our only decoy.
They got some attention
with the Hell they did raise
I suppose I'll remember
for the rest of my days,
While Sutton and Smitty
and Connor and me
provided surprises
that was ugly to see.
It was over in minutes
and when it was done
there were four bloodly bodies
and a busted up gun.
Grabowski was waiting
as 'ere we came in,
and that tough weathered face
had managed a grin,
"People," he said,
"I think you done good
by striking a blow
for our brotherhood,
So, let everyman here
get back in his sack,
go back to his dreams,
and forget the attack.
It's now Christmas morning,
so be of good cheer.
Merry Xmas to all,
May you live till next year!"

Remove the meat of said mango and add apples and cinnamon, steam in a pot and stuff the mangos. Top with a dash of Crown Royal and pure sugar and broil. And there you have it.
Wait? Apples and cinnamon are steamed together. After streaming, stuff the mangos. Top w/CR and sugar. Then broil. Right?

Remove the meat from the mango. Put in a pot with a lid.
Add apples. (peeled, no skin)
Add sugar and a touch of water and a hint of Kalua.
Reduce until soft.
Put back in mango shell.
Top with CR and sugar on top.
Broil until top is brown.
Drink the rest of the CR. :)

Christmases of years past...
There are so many special ones..First Christmas as a family..First one when Jordan came back from Iraq...The last one with my mom
And then there was one Christmas when a bunch of us kids in College rented rooms at this Hotel in Calistoga..I do remember all of us skinny dipping at 3am in the pool. He don't forget those Christmases...I took an Elevator sometime during the night to our room completely naked to grab a bottle of wine..
Most crazy Christmas without getting arrested by the local sheriff..

I have been listening to a lot of progressive talk radio lately. It seems to me that there is a fair share of crazy going on over on the left, and they are fixing to get into bed with the wacky right.
Air America's progressive radio talker Thom Hartmann has made a number of statements lately that show some affinity to characters on the wacky right. Such as Pat Buchanan.
He had a long monologue about how progressives should aline themselves with the TeaParty. This came up on Democratic Underground (of course, they used the sarcastic "teabagger" moniker).
No, he's not much for satire, and that's because there is a convergence starting to happen here. I'm hearing similar stuff like this, cross-purpose politics.
2010 is going to be really interesting.

Yes though I can't believe you never heard of cholent. ;)
In Israel they had (have?) a cholent competition that is pretty incredible. Most Jewish groups (regardless of where they're from in the diaspora) have a cholent. It is because eating hot food on Shabbat is believed to be a requirement (I understand it was to differentiate between rabbinical Jews and Karaites).
Anyway, Sephardi cholent is pretty good. Really different than the ashkenazi type (which is awesome too).

Ooh good, dateline, I get to say Merry Christmas again so Merry Christmas to you all and may your Christmas day be as pleasant as mine was.
btw,
Our Christmas diner was a fishy starter followed up with roast lamb, buttery minted new potatoes, fresh green beans and broad beans from my uncle Jimmies garden. Gravy and mint sauce, of course.
Pudding was trifle and pavlova with fresh local raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and boysenberries and lashings of whipped cream.
All washed down with Macs Gold and a real nice Longridge sauvignon blanc from Hawke Bay.

Friends, Jim and Debby (Jim was on prayer list recently) have a very stand offish cat, blind from birth. She gets close to no one but Jim and Debby. One day after visiting my son a few miles down the road I visited. She jumped on the table where I sat and rubbed her head in the palm of my left hand, continuing intermittently and staying close by. Jim and Debby were amazed. I explained I had within that hour petted my son's dogs (little dogs). I watch and am fascinated by cats.

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a sceptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.
He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.
You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.
No Santa Claus?Thank God he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Well, the hubby thinks we can make it over to my Dad's. We got 6-8 inches, and it is still coming down. Bad, but not as bad as the East Coast several days ago. I think this system is headed that way, however.
Such a festive thread! This is fun. Thanks for all the Merry Christmas wishes. Many more for the years to come!

Pharoah Sanders is awesome.
After Sanders' 1971 Grinnell College Performance, a friend just sat in full lotus muttering "God, God, I've just seen God".
