It's kinda sad, the fall of Cookie Monster. With parents looking for healthier snacks for their kids, Cookie Monster was getting less popular. There were rumors he would be renamed Veggie Monster.

By 2006, it was all over for our beloved Cookie Monster.

In a 2007 appearance on Martha Stewart's TV program, Cookie Monster explained his new philosophy that "Cookies are a sometime food."

As if it needed explaining. Cookie monster also ate cars, books, telephone poles, etc.

It could be anything. Maybe a homemade bomb that fizzled or just those little popper you get on July 4th. If I had to guess I'd say it was just some nut who wanted to create a scene.

I think Cookie Monster was always hungry because he never actually ate the cookies. He just made crumbs out of them and they fell out of his mouth.

I think I'll ignore the Pam Geller crazy and just pop in here to wish one and all a Merry Christmas.

We're 2 disc into the box set of The Wire and have stopped to break open the 3 disc set of the Bourne movies. My hubby had a Merry Christmas, tools and DVDs. I'm happy with my most awesome Dutch Oven and a new stand mixer.
Later we will top it off with 2 hours of Robert Downey Jr.

Food, family and RDJ...happy day!

Details are still sketchy and there are conflicting stories...
Man Attempts to Set Off Explosives on Northwest Airlines Plane

Federal officials and police are interviewing a Nigerian man, who allegedly tried to "explode" a powdery substance aboard a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, injuring himself and two other passengers, law enforcement officials said.

The man said he was directed by al Qaeda to explode a small device in flight, over U.S. soil, ABC News has learned. Authorities have no corroboration of that information, and the credibility of the suspect's statements are being questioned, officials said.
...
The suspect told authorities that he had explosive powder taped to his leg and used a syringe of chemicals to mix with the powder that was to cause explosion. This is of concert because it is a method of mixing that is consistent with terror techniques.

A passenger aboard a Delta Air Lines flight in Detroit was planning to blow up the plane but the explosive device failed, a senior US counter-terror official has said.

AP sources: Passenger tried to blow up airliner

A Northwest Airlines passenger landing in Detroit on Friday tried to blow up the flight but the explosive device failed, two U.S. national security officials said
...
"He appears to have had some kind of incendiary device he tried to ignite," said one of the U.S. officials.

Authorities initially believed the passenger had set off firecrackers that caused some minor injuries.
...
Passenger Syed Jafri, a U.S. citizen who had flown from the United Arab Emirates, said the incident occurred during the plane's descent. Jafri said he was seated three rows behind the passenger and said he saw a glow, and noticed a smoke smell. Then, he said, "a young man behind me jumped on him."

"Next thing you know, there was a lot of panic," he said.

Probably because that's when the plane is over the city or a populated area.

Only thing to do. 9/11 may not have been as paradigm-shattering as it felt at the moment, but it decidedly changed one thing--cooperating with hijackers is no longer the safest thing to do.

re: #55 Killgore Trout

Probably because that's when the plane is over the city or a populated area.

My thought was so that there would not only be visible debris and potential extra victims on the ground, but perhaps video of the crash itself. Everybody's got a video camera these days, and footage of a plane crash followed by the news that terrorists brought it down would be a bonus for them.
