Report: Passenger Tried to Blow Up Northwest Airlines Jet

US News • Views: 4,221

There was apparently an attempt to blow up a passenger jet today, but the bomb failed to detonate. Details are still sketchy.

WASHINGTON — A Northwest Airlines passenger landing in Detroit on Friday tried to blow up the flight but the explosive device failed, two U.S. national security officials said.

The passenger, who was traveling on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam, was not identified. He was being questioned Friday evening, according to one of the officials, both of whom spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing.

The motive of the Christmas Day attack was not immediately clear.

“He appears to have had some kind of incendiary device he tried to ignite,” said one of the U.S. officials.

I think these new details lend credibility to the earlier reports that the bomber was a Nigerian man who was given the device from an Al Qaeda linked group.

Thank god for incompetent bomb makers.

Al-Qaida link in failed plane attack

U.S. officials say a Northwest Airlines passenger from Nigeria said he was acting on behalf of al-Qaida when he tried to blow up a flight Friday as it landed in Detroit.

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., identified the suspect as Abdul Mudallad, a Nigerian. King said the flight began in Nigeria and went through Amsterdam en route to Detroit.

ne of the U.S. intelligence officials said the explosive device was a mix of powder and liquid. It failed when the passenger tried to detonate it.

President Obama was notified of the incident by his military aide between 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Detroit time or 9 a.m. in Hawaii, where the Obamas are vacationing, according to White House spokesman Bill Burton.

The president subsequently convened a secure conference call with John Brennan, his Homeland Security and Counter-terrorism adviser, and Denis McDonough, acting chief of staff for the National Security Council.

Obama then instructed that "all appropriate measures be taken to increase security for air travel."

I think it was a Northwestern flight, but Delta and Northwestern are in the middle of a merger. It may be Delta but still in Northwestern colors.

Holy Crap! I take that flight all the time. We have corporate offices in both Ohio and Rotterdam so taking the long leg from Schipol to Detroit is the best flight. It is a large 777 plane. I am really surprised that anyone got any type of explosive through Schipol in that security there is the tightest in the world outside of maybe Israel.

According to the Huffington Post, a passenger "tried to blow up the flight but the explosive device failed, two U.S. national security officials said." The passenger " tried to explode powder taped to his leg with a syringe full of chemicals" according to the NY Daily News.

At first the staff on the plane thought the passenger was trying to light fireworks. An eyewitness, Syed Jafri, tells the Huffington Post, "he saw a glow, and noticed a smoke smell. Then a young man behind me jumped on him."

Interestingly enough someone on Airliners dot net just said that Rep. Pete King (R) said that was NOT on the no-fly list.

What I find interesting is that Rep. Pete King has an idea who is/isn't on the list. Ain't he supposed to be representing somebody, not moonlighting for the TSA?

You want to see a copy of the list, it seems that all you have to do is mail a check for $5 and a 8x10 SASE to the TSA.

132 What, me worry?  Fri, Dec 25, 2009 4:49:16pm

It seems a man from Nigeria with a one way ticket to the states would at least inspire some serious questioning from authorities and a thorough search. Before any search, they could determine if he was, indeed, emigrating. He'd have a ton of paperwork on him and missing that, a good search would most likely have found the explosives.

I was 16 on my trip to Israel in 1977 with B'nai Brith's Young Judea group. I was asked if I had any electrical devices. I said no. They opened my suitcase and found my cassette player. I tried to explain it wasn't electrical. It ran on batteries! But three men shuttled me into a closed cubicle and went through everthing in my suitcase, including unrolling my socks. I was terrified. When satisfied I was merely an American teenager, they left me there to put everything back. I crammed my suitcases full and dashed to the plane shuttle which I nearly missed.

Anyway that's why Israel doesn't have hijacking.

And if he was on watch lists already which one of those articles up there seemed to indicate, he most likely would not have any immigration papers.

I know they have no problem with killing Arabs and Muslims, but if you're a Muslim terrorist organization that plans things out at all, I think the last thing you want to do is blow up a plane on the runway in Detroit. Back when Bush 43 was president, I was flying weekly for business. One day they had us taking our laptops out and turning them on, and I said, "What, did the president give another speech last night?" Innovative Security Scan simplifies passenger control at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport

The Security Scan is voluntary

From today, passengers will find a Security Scan at Pier H and another one near the Pier E gate. In the months to come, a total of 17 Security Scans will be installed in the Terminal. Subsequently it will be decided whether the Security Scan should be introduced for security control procedures on a larger scale. For the time being, passengers will have a choice between using the Security Scan or going through regular security procedures.

Then I found this:

Approximately, 15 locations in the airport have L3 millimeter wave scanning machines in use. Although these products have met with criticism in the United States, von Adrichmem said it is rare that passengers opt out of being scanned with the machine.

I'm not sure I understand the whole point here. I mean, does it matter if he's a convert or not or what country he comes from? Or what the paper's call him?

The wiki on Reid said he used not one, but two aliases, Abdul Raheem and Tariq Raja. So which should they have used?

I think that the convert issue can be a political football. Also, as to country of origin, I think that Americans are very interested in homegrown (US) terrorists. The issue of homegrown terrorists may be interesting to pick apart as to the reason of "why" an American turns to terrorism against their own country.

Damn.

My son's currently attending culinary school. Their classes are organized around the operation of a teaching restaurant on campus, so a class learning knife skills will practice by cutting up whatever's on the menu that day, and all other classes are similarly organized so there is very little waste. The restaurant charges extremely low prices and is open to all - faculty, students and the general public. Pretty sweet setup.

Can anything be done at your facility to make better use of the food? I understand that training is important, and often results in products that can't be served to the normal clientele, but perhaps there are other venues that could make use of it somehow.

The Saudis, oy. I went for a semester of college to an international school in england. My roommate and I posted a "prayer meeting" sign for our room for folks who were homesick. After that, the gal from Saudi Arabia hated me with a passion, a fire in her eyes, flying daggers passion. She made sure that the other Muslim girls from Oman and Jordan would not speak to me.
Coming from my mid-west tower, it was an eye opener. This was the early 80's. People would mention this country or that hating America. I would always say that's nothing compared to the hatred from Saudi Arabia.

I also hope that he at no time gagged on a beverage on the flight nor was exposed to anyone reading Harry Potter out loud. And I hope no one on board was waving an American flag.

I would hate for a guy on a terrorist watch list with the rights of any American (because he is a world citizen, after all) to experience any sort of jingoism, fascism, torture or inhospitality while simply expressing his political opinions with incendiary devices.

They lost both games to the Giants, 33-31 and 24-31.
The Redskins are a train wreck this year, and they only won 6-7.
The Saints game was impressive for the first three quarters. If I were the Cowboys I'm really hoping I don't have to see them in the playoffs.
The Chargers won that game 20-17.

Holding your opponent to a subpar offensive performance is great, of course. But you still have to win the game.

Odd Couple Demands Probe of Rahm Emanuel at Freddie as More Money Rolls In

Two strange bedfellows have asked Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate President Obama's right-hand man, chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, for his potential role in the near collapse of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

The letter by Jane Hamsher, founder of the liberal Firedoglake Web site, and Grover Norquist, Americans for Tax Reform Chief, was sent Wednesday, one day before the Treasury Department announced that it will lift the $400 billion financial cap on loans to the government-sponsored enterprises to make sure they stay afloat.

They cited a Chicago Tribune story that described a plan by the executives and the board to use accounting tricks to show shareholders they were reaping massive profits even as they continued down a path of risky investments.

The profits were then used to justify the executives' big bonuses. When Emanuel left the board to enter Congress in 2002, he was qualified for $380,000 in stock and options and $20,000 cash.

You find out life’s this game of inches. So is football. Because in either game, life or football, the margin for error is so small -- I mean one-half a step too late, or too early, and you don’t quite make it. One-half second too slow, too fast, you don’t quite catch it.

The inches we need are everywhere around us.

They’re in every break of the game, every minute, every second.

On this team, we fight for that inch. On this team, we tear ourselves and everyone else around us to pieces for that inch.

I have Christmas present for Shurmata. It's nothing serious, just a video link:

I'm going to bed soon and I want to make sure that my favorite blue-skinned lizard gets her present.

So, carry on, and have a wonderful Christmas weekend!

Ok, I would rather be waterboarded than discuss football (any variety) I got bored and started surfing. Yahoo is featuring an AP story on a highly edited and suspicious video released by AQ today.

"The Taliban released a video Friday of an American soldier captured in Afghanistan, showing him apparently healthy but spouting criticism about the U.S. military operation.

"In Idaho, Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl's family pleaded on Christmas Day for his release and urged him to "stay strong.""

The suspect is said not to have been on the no-fly list. However, reports indicate that he was on a U.S. intelligence watch list.

If true how come he was granted a Visa for entry to the United States? State grants Visa waivers but Nigeria is not listed. The do grant Visa waivers for the UK so perhaps he got Visa entry by way of UK documentation?

How can a Nigerian national on a U.S. intelligence list be allowed to even board a flight to Detroit?

I'm no expert and won't conjecture on his real political leanings. I'm guessing this is pure AQ propaganda, timed for Xmas. No? This video is lame, lame, lame. And cruel to his family to boot.

Two things:

1. I don't necessarily doubt that the guy may have had some sort of ties to al Qaeda, but I think that, like Richard Reid (shoebomber) and Nidal Hassan (Ft. Hood shooter), this is basically a lone nut with AQ sympathies and/or aspirations rather than being an actual AQ operative, The reason being that if nothing else, AQ has proven that they know how to carry out successful terrorist shenanigans, and don't fart around with sending a lone guy to do a potentially high-profile "mission" with a crappy bomb that doesn't work. I could be wrong, but that's the feeling I get.

2. Someone from the FBI or NSA ought to sit down and have a Come-To-Jesus Meeting with Rep. Peter King about the joys of keeping his damned mouth shut and waiting for an official statement. Isn't one of the rules of intelligence gathering something about not letting your enemy know how much you know?

So returning from Iraq we were treated extra special, given our own line for the screening. All the civilians in line watched with jealous eyes as we were led past them straight to the shake down tables. We felt priviledged until somebody asked why we were getting the star treatment this time. The answer: We don't make you guys take your boots off any more...have you ever smelled 150 pairs of feet that have been stuffed into leather boots for 18-26 hours?
We didn't care what the reason was..faster is faster.

Pacemakers don't like magnets, so I don't go through the metal detector and I certainly don't allow them to use the hand wand. That's a magnet on a stick!

I was touring Duke Medical Center last July and the doctor guiding the tour says if you have a pacemaker, you aren't even allowed on the same floor as the MRI scanners. The magnets in them are that strong!

My aunt served as a combat nurse in Vietnam. Came home with two battle stars.

In 1989 my chest incision got infected and wouldn't heal. The doctors took a "lets wait and hop for the best" approch. I'm betting that it was powdered magnesium and that the syringe either had plain old water or hydrochloric acid in it. Mix either and the magnesium heats up more and more while releasing hydrogen until it catches fire. It is very hard to put out once it is lit, a good sized package could probably burn its way thru the bottom of the airplane. Or at least thru the deck and into the luggage compartment setting that on fire.

I'll be interested in hearing the details if and when they release them, like why it didn't fully ignite, did the powder get scattered or what?

True. 24 boys men. As Mother Nature would say, "They're nasty little boys.."

One of my civilian buddies crashed on a bike .. read motorcycle .. in Nam. Serious pavement rash (you know how nasty that is) and thank God his .38 .. in his waistband didn't go off during the accident. The Army hosp in Saigon patched him up and sent him home. We kidnapped him and set him up in our living room where our maid could look after him. Now you gals didn't have to - but several came buy from time to time to check on him when off duty till he recovered.

A friend and president of a seniors group here where I live was a Nurse in VN.

This lady and all of you have the respect and honor that I am unable to express beyond thank you, thank you, thank you.

From whence comes this attempt a mass murder on the birthday of the Christ, who gave us the rules by which we could live in peace?

Do not tell me all religions have the same ultimate aim.

Ya know - like a thermite reaction the components need to be fine and well integrated. Strapped on his leg and agitated while he walked the heavier could have settled.

Ah - my thermite experiments were mostly non-exciting. Then there were a few ..

Psychological terrorism has no values or rules but it's own. The sooner we get it, the better.

All religions have the same aim ... to bind back to the source. Even Islam.

Distortions abound.

El Al, baby, the only way to fly...

Aye, I concur.

I flew Budapest - Tel Aviv a week ago.
In the security interview pre-flight the security officer decided to mark my bag for close inspection because I slept with the luggage in an apartment with Spanish nationals.
Once I got my bag back and got home, I started unpacking my things and noticed something interesting;
I had my international vaccination card buried somewhere underneath my clothes. It has English, French and Arabic sections.
When I took it out, I noticed they put a security sticker on it only in the Arabic section with the flight details and date.
Perhaps to mark the Arabic writing as innocent? I don't know.
Anyway, I was surprised. How meticulous.

And from the NY Daily News we have the oblique "Nigerian extremist," probably not enough room to write "Islamofascist attempting to murder hundreds of infidels on their high holiday."

"Nigerian extremist Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, was subdued immediately aboard Northwest Flight 253 - carrying 278 passengers and 11 crew members - minutes before the plane landed, officials said." NY Daily News 12/26

re: #3 philosophus invidius

AP says it was firecrackers.

We're not getting the whole story. It's very unlikely that firecrackers would set his pants on fire or cause the kind of burns inflicted on the guy who tackled him. Something very flammable was there too.
