Now that Christmas is past, Amazon has a great selection of Year-End Deals, with discounts of up to 70% on lots of items.

Here’s one special that caught my eye, a Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-L26X1 26-Inch 720p LCD HDTV for only $260 — more than half off.

And here’s one that I just ordered for myself, for podcasting and musical instrument recording: an Audio-Technica AT2020 USB Condenser USB Microphone, for only $95 — more than 60% off.

(Note: if you click through to Amazon from one of our links, LGF gets a small percentage in referral fees on all qualifying merchandise, without raising the cost to you, so you get terrific deals and help support us at the same time.)

Pretty decent deal on this Yamaha keyboard too, I picked up 88 key version of this a couple years back and paid tons and tons more:

Actually, you don't need to do that manually -- I have code in the commenting module that automagically changes Amazon URLs to include the LGF ID.

You don't really need to; I've even put my own site tag in there (amazon does that automatically for every link I pop up at Amazon if I'm signed in;) but even with my code Amazon detects where the traffic is actually referred from and tacks Charle's code on in place of mine.

Global cooling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Global cooling was a conjecture during the 1970s of imminent cooling of the Earth's surface and atmosphere along with a posited commencement of glaciation. This hypothesis never had significant scientific support, but gained temporary popular attention due to a combination of press reports that did not accurately reflect the scientific understanding of ice age cycles, and a slight downward trend of temperatures from the 1940s to the early 1970s. Mainstream scientific opinion is that the Earth has not durably cooled, but undergone global warming throughout the 20th century.

Oops. That's what happens when you try to parrot talking points without understanding them.

Well, it will soon be 2010 and the election cycle is looming over the news:

Reasons to be fearful: Democrats face triple whammy for elections

Historians may some day praise Mr Obama's vision and bold ambitions but at this point at least, the public is sceptical and his party apprehensive they may pay the price next year. Ultimately, the direction of the economy and specifically jobs, and how the war in Afghanistan goes over the next ten months will be the critical factors in next year's elections. But there is no question, Democrats are anxious and have much to be worried about.

It is conventional wisdom that the party out of power makes some modest strides in the midterm elections. I have little reason to doubt the convention.

You brought up the link to the Wiki "global cooling" article, and it seems you are using that as an analogy to current science, a "...they were wrong then and are wrong now..." position, yet that Wiki article itself made claims the the global cooling science in the 70's was far from settled.

So, you brought it up, there seem that there is a difference of opinion, both from some other Lizards here and the article itself.

And a few of us have questioned your position and the article. Is there some reason you seem so hesitant to debate the issue you injected in this thread?

You brought up the link to the Wiki "global cooling" article, and it seems you are using that as an analogy to current science, a "...they were wrong then and are wrong now..." position, yet that Wiki article itself made claims the the global cooling science in the 70's was far from settled.

So, you brought it up, there seem that there is a difference of opinion, both from some other Lizards here and the article itself.

And a few of us have questioned your position and the article. Is there some reason you seem so hesitant to debate the issue you injected in this thread?

Well, it will soon be 2010 and the election cycle is looming over the news:

Reasons to be fearful: Democrats face triple whammy for elections

It is conventional wisdom that the party out of power makes some modest strides in the midterm elections. I have little reason to doubt the convention.

It isn't so much conventional wisdom as it is notable historical fact, although the GOP bucked it in 2002.

If the economy doesn't show improvement to the point where the average person can notice it, though, things will go very badly indeed for the Democrats. Same if there are tax increases of any sort. Likewise, if the economy noticeably improves, the Dems stand to reap the benefits. Apart from that, it's still too early to tell what will happen.

By May or June, though, things may be clearer.

Abdulmuttalab's father notified the U.S. Embassy with information on his son, saying the family feared he went to Yemen to participate in "some kind of jihad."

So, we went and saw Avatar this morning, in 3D. Thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended, especially if you can find a 3D theater nearby. This technology has come a long way, and is now nearly flawless, to the point where you almost immediately forget you're wearing the glasses and simply accept the addition of depth to the scene.

And yes, as many, many others have pointed out, this is Dances With Wolves all over again - but now with heart-pounding alien action sequences! Actually, the movie it reminded me of most wasn't DWW, but another Cameron effort - Aliens. In both cases, I left the theatre physically exhausted after a couple hours of non-stop, fast-paced action and a predictable but enjoyable emotional rollercoaster. The two are very similar in structure, if not in plot, and nobody pushes emotional buttons like Cameron.

Yes, Cameron paints with a broad, nearly mile-wide brush, and invokes fistfuls of cliches and stereotypes along the way. If you're looking for political material to gripe about (or praise) you won't have to dig very deep. In my opinion, though, all of this is overridden by the sheer entertainment value.

The CGI makes this one of the few movies I would say really ought to be seen in a theater setting. It is incredibly lush, deeply layered and nearly flawless, creating a totally believable - and intensely alien - landscape that practically swallows the viewer whole. And the blending of live action and CGI has never, ever been done better; it is completely seamless. Utterly gorgeous work, and it sets the bar several notches higher for whoever follows in this genre.

This is probably the first movie in decades that I wouldn't at all mind going back to the theater again to see a second time. Don't hesitate to see it - you won't be disappointed.

His information about the son was forwarded to the National Counter-Terrorism Center, and the son was added to a general watch list, a data base of suspected terrorists. But the official said "the info on him was not deemed specific enough to pull his visa or put him on a no-fly list."
