Hot Air Posts Bomb-Making Instructions

Blogosphere • Views: 4,031

At Hot Air, the site where hundreds of commenters regularly call for violent revolution against the elected government of the United States, Ed Morrissey posts video instructions for creating a bomb like the one that almost blew up Northwest Airlines flight 253, and hiding it in a common everyday item.

Also posted by Andrew Breitbart.

Welcome to the modern right wing blogosphere.

So dumb. I mean the information is available, sure... but when you run a site that has a record of people advocating revolution or the murder of prominent politicians, you're just asking for trouble!

(I will admit its pretty unlikely that anything will happen. This is still retarded.)

2 albusteve  Sat, Dec 26, 2009 7:40:49pm

I was going to say something about this downstairs...I'd not heard of this and I was stupified...Breitbarts post was just a few days ago?

3 avanti  Sat, Dec 26, 2009 7:41:03pm

All I saw was a white powder and a red liquid, I hope they did not ID the two.

If not for that Dutch tourist jumping over several rows of seats, a bunch of people would be dead.

I would like to see the tape of security screening at Schiphol, how did this guy get through with 80 grams of PETN? Don't they have sniffer devices (aka dogs).

When I was at Schiphol two years ago, they had security screening before boarding a connecting flight.

5 Mark Pennington  Sat, Dec 26, 2009 7:44:06pm

Oh. my. God. I thought I couldn't be shocked anymore but I was wrong. What an irresponsible prick! Surely he knows that most of his readers are not exactly stable human beings.

6 What, me worry?  Sat, Dec 26, 2009 7:44:19pm

re: #6 marjoriemoon

afaik, no its not. The information is widely available. they'd be in trouble if they said "You should blow something up, heres how you do it!"

9 Charles Johnson  Sat, Dec 26, 2009 7:47:01pm

I can't even begin to imagine the thought process that would lead someone to think this is OK.

re: #6 marjoriemoon

Isn't that, like illegal?

Probably not. They didn't specify exactly what chemicals were being used although it's not difficult to find out. The information on how to make these explosives is widely available. It's irresponsible but probably not illegal. It's extra irresponsible because there's not much news value in posting these bomb making instructions. They really don't have much to gain (aside from web traffic) for doing so.

Andrew Breitbart is a skeevy piece of shit. I saw him go ballistic on C-SPAN one day over a single caller who simply claimed he rented porno tapes to Clarence Thomas while in Savannah Ga.

Breitbart lost what little composure he had and shut all future callers off who disagreed with him. Its on YouTube to this day.

Of course Breitbart now claims its all a conspiracy to put him into a headlock....

12 Velvet Elvis  Sat, Dec 26, 2009 7:48:20pm

Do their instructions include blowing your nuts off?

re: #10 Killgore Trout

The idea of posting something like that just to pump up traffic is pretty brutal.

Well, at least he doesn't tell you what the binary components are. It looks like baking powder and red nail polish. (Not that I'm going to try this at home with baking powder and red nail polish)

17 jaunte  Sat, Dec 26, 2009 7:50:21pm

As the ADL has reported, posting bomb-making instructions is a practice of some white supremacist websites. Morrissey is really going downhill fast.

Additionally, some white supremacist pages sites, such as Death 2 ZOG (Zionist Occupation Government), have posted bomb-making instructions.

Unbelievable that anyone would post that.

Once again our cumbersome and illusory airport security apparatus has failed to either deter or deny and only perhaps delay the terrorist along with everyone else on the screening line. I am not comforted by the fact that we are all relying upon the incompetence of our foes and the vigilance of the person in the seat next to us to protect us from the religious nihilists. Fortunately in a curious irony of life the most competent suicide bombers are already dead, but I suspect that it is a renewable resource.

And blowing off similar circumstances in the past because they feel as though they are the exception and they are on the right side.

IMHO it sounds like the real point of failure wasn't at the airport. There's only so much that can be done there. The failure to follow up on the father's warning is a greater fuckup. If a father is willing to turn in his own son you know things have to be pretty serious.

27 darthstar  Sat, Dec 26, 2009 7:59:11pm

This is exactly why, when I looked up PETN which was used on the NW flight earlier (just because I like to know what the chemical make-up of things like this is), I didn't link the page, choosing instead to link a recipe for peanut brittle. It's too easy to make explosives. And the page I found showed how with a couple of beakers, water, baking soda, and a couple of chemicals, one could make PETN in their own kitchen...oh, there are lots of precautions about keeping cold water on hand in case a 'brown cloud' forms (which means dump the shit before you blow yourself up).

I worry about sites like Hot Air as I have a nephew who, while smart, is a big Glenn Beck fan and will likely see how easy it is to make explosives, and if he were to play with some chemicals from his high school chem lab, could do some serious damage to himself--though I like to think he's smarter than that.

If the other parts of the report at HotAir are true, one of the TSA's new moves will be to require people to be seated in their seats for the last hour of the flight.

If that's true, then if there is a future incident, passengers will not be able to respond.

Does that make sense to anyone?

I think the rule to stay seated is supposed to keep jihadis from mixing chemicals in the bathroom at the last minute or walking up and placing them on the cockpit doors or something. I think if you get up to punch a guy trying to ignite his shoes then that's probably ok.

I think someone mentioned downthread that TSA removed that bit from their site, but I'm not sure.

I don't think they can do that arbitrarily. I mean I've been stuck on the runway for hours, but when that happens you can usually stand or move around. It's not healthy for people to be sitting in a cramped space for long lengths without moving, especially for heavyset or elderly people.

I was listening to the radio today and they were giving examples of how terrorists can communicate via AOL or Yahoo mail. I won't reveal how they do it but it leaves no trace. They said it was ok to talk about because the FBI already knows how they do it. I thought, jeeze, now a whole lot of other people do to.

I do have a concern, however, that much of what our TSA does (as well as what's done in other countries) is just not as effective as it could be.

60 morrisab  Sat, Dec 26, 2009 8:16:33pm

The thing that is confusing me is how do they expect to find 80g of powder? I used to breed cats. The average kitten weighs 100g at birth and 80g kittens were not uncommon. I mean... do you know how small that is? That's about 3 ounces. That fits in the palm of your hand with room left to spare. It would be really easy to distribute 80g of powder - it's a minuscule amount. W/o bomb-sniffing dogs/technology how would one expect the TSA pat-down to even start to find that?

Which is all to say - pre-screening would seem to be more effective than relying on airport security lines. One-way ticket? Reported to US embassy by relative as a possible security risk? Shouldn't that equal "no-fly?"

The Breitbart video was a big "so what" to me. Nothing was identified Frankly, being a chemist by training, making something that will explodes is child's play. In fact, in AP chemistry in high school my lab buddy and I found a reference book with the instructions for making something called "Bernard's Blasting Powder" and lo and behold, the raw ingredients were in the chemistry stock room. My lab partner and I made some up, packed it into a test tube with a small piece of rope as a fuse and a rubber stopper in the test tube. The chemistry class was half below ground and had windows that opened essentially at grass level. We lit the thing and whung it out the window just as the class bell was ringing and no one was watching. We tensed up for a minute or two expecting blast akin to an M-80 but to our sorrow, nothing. So off we went to our next class. A full ten minutes later the thing went off (I guess rope burns slow). A test tube full of this stuff blew a smoking crater three feet across and two feet deep in the front yard of the school. There honest to God was a small mushroom cloud over the blast site for a minute or two. Everyone on the front side of the school, including me siting in math class got a great view. Police came but the test tube had completely ceased to exist so we got clean away. Stupid.....absolutely! Could someone including us have gotten seriously hurt....absolutely. Should we have confessed.....absolutely. But easy to make....for sure.

I like Texas too...especially Austin...great town. I actually lived in the west Texas town of El Paso (I always write El Paso that way) when I was three...too young to remember, but I did live there for a short time.

Austin is a fine town for tourists, and on down the Hill Country to San Antonio...lots of history, and food, and music...I just love it over there...Texas history is tightly bound with our own here in NM...we are like dysfunctional cousins, lots of mutual respect when you can get them to admit it

It's frightening that the same internet which brings us so much valuable information, insight and even sustenance is used by others to spread violence and death.

While we are here trying to make sense of the terrorists, politics, and science, there are others out there researching how to make explosive devices to murder us.

Speaking of right wing idiocy, I see that on the FoxNation thread KT linked earlier (about the President's self defense of his actions wrt black Americans), the comments continue to boil with all sorts of ugliness.

A sight to see, in some ways. As with HA running the bomb making instructions, it used to be, when I was young, that this sort of fringe activity really was fringe activity. While racism existed, after the MLK era it become impolite in society to be so public about it.

Now, with the power of the internet, everyone can hang out their moralities' dirty laundry for everyone to see.

I'm guessing that's why Fox news has been pulling back the reins on Glenn Beck lately...he's too involved with the people who show up to Obama events with loaded guns. It's only a matter of time before one goes off the deep end and Fox has to back-pedal to distance themselves...that would kill their advertising revenue, and that is what they value most...even more than their hatred of the sitting president.

I went to a Baptist high school for a year, and the seniors planted firecrackers in several classrooms as pranks, with timers set to light them. They worked. It doesn't take a lot of brains to make a timed fuse. They used kitchen timers...the wind-up kind.

We had some kids at the horrible hippie school who took to making chemical mixes to explode plastic bottles. Of course, one of them also set the building on fire, but the principal was determined to see it as clean boyish fun.

Meanwhile in Palestine.....
IDF kills 3 Fatah men suspected of killing Israeli in West Bank

The Israel Defense Forces raided the men's homes in Nablus, acting on information obtained by the Shin Bet security service.

Eyewitnesses said the three were shot while unarmed and did not resist arrest. However, Col. Itzik Bar, commander of the Samaria Brigade who led the operation, said that "the forces were operating based on a terrorist threat, with sufficient information that [the men were] armed.
....
The U.S. administration conveyed a message to both Israel and the PA that both sides should work to calm down the situation after the Nablus incident, a senior U.S. official told Haaretz. The official said that "we talked to both sides in order to get full information about what happened. We expressed our concern and encouraged both sides to continue their security cooperation."

The dead are Raad Sarkaji, 38, a Tanzim activist formerly of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades in the Nablus area, who was arrested in 2002 and released at the beginning of this year; Ghassan Abu Shreikh, 40, who was also a former prisoner in Israel, and Adnan Subuh, 33. Security officials said Subuh had four weapons and a hoard of ammunition when he was killed.

The IDF reported that the troops reached the three homes and called on the occupants to surrender. When they did not, troops fired stun grenades and fired in the direction of the house involved. Only then did they shoot to kill

re: #128 freetoken

Yeah... disclaimers, nice for legal gymnastics, but ugly and worthless posters still soil the furniture with their crap.

Not for legal reasons. Just if someone posts "Death to America" people wouldn't think you agree with that, if for some reason you're not at the computer 24/7.

You're probably not going to prevent hate-filled or racist material on a website. I don't expect news sites to never have it. What I do expect is for someone to be monitoring it and removing it if it comes up. You're talking a personal page. It doesn't have to be within 5 minutes, but I think no more than 24 hours. A newspaper should have someone monitoring in the least every hour.

Charles, I believe, removes them because first, they offend him. Second, it offends us (just as anti-Semitic material always offended LGF posters from the very beginning). And thirdly, it sends the website down a dark hole. Even if every other poster was giving them hell about it, you have a website of screaming and insulting. Not a place to discuss race relations in any positive way anyway.

That being said there is no reason to give people incapable of figuring it out on their own instruction manuals on how to do it. Are they even stopping for one second to think of the people who might be injured or killed because they gave an idiot the means?

Timothy McVeigh never struck me as being smart enough to have built a bomb on his own, much less the devasting one he used. If he hadn't been given the information on how to do it by others would his name be infamous now? I doubt it very much.

And the tired old watermelon trick, sigh. Note the fencepost it was sitting on was not damaged at all.

I don't think anything imaginative or dangerous was leaked. Any would-be terrorist could find more specific information without searching too hard.

Jpost has another take, that the IDF praised the PA for their role in capturing another 150 suspects.

[Link: www.jpost.com...]

On Friday, PA forces arrested some 150 suspects, most of whom were released on Saturday after the IDF operation in Nablus, in which the three terrorists were killed.

And then this little bit.

The performance of the PA security forces has improved over the past two years with the deployment of US-trained battalions throughout the West Bank. There are currently battalions deployed in Nablus, Jenin, Bethlehem and Hebron.

Charles, here is a page from a bike frame shop's website warning readers how typical brake cleaner can turn to phosgene gas if it is exposed to excessive heat and argon gas used in MIG or TIG welding. It tells the story of a welder's long medical ordeal and brush with death after inhaling a trace amount of phosgene gas made that way by a guy who didn't read the fine print on the label.

It is intended to be a safety alert of course but it could be used the wrong way.

And that is Good News. Three terrorist murders get their 72 virgins goats. The IDF did very well in this case, finding the terrorist as quickly as they did.

They don't get 72 "virgins" though, that is a perversion of the Qur'an, they get 72 houri, they are not human virgins. They are kind of like angels, as in that they are divine beings created by God for a specific purpose, they do not have free will like humans.

Depending on the Islamic interpretation you believe, they are either whores to be used at your leisure or inviolate beings that you cannot so much as touch, much less soil with "earthly" passions. The majority of Islam still goes with the "Angels to serve you and make sure your comfortable and well fed at all times" interpretation over the "Whores to be sexually used by you any time you feel like it" one.

It is supposed to be about having more servants in heaven than you could ever need to take care of your every whim, not more "virgin/sluts" than you could ever f**k. They definitely have that bit wrong according to their own scripture.

Then again who am I to say that, just look at some of the whacko interpretations of the bible that are common in this country...sigh. :(

If people come to see you as a role model, you should accept that role and act the part. Setting the right example to live by is a far better thing than any mere transitory pleasure. It makes the world a better place and is pleasing to God, whom we should always wish to serve as best as we can.

I think the steroid accusations are an attempt to bring him down for something more than simple infidelity. In other words, Tiger's got a flesh wound and the sharks smell blood. Tarnishing his name further is merely part of the evolution of this story. The media won't be happy until he's a completely broken man...then they can air two-hour specials about the greatest golfer that almost was and his downfall, and we can move on to the next great icon.

You are confusing interpretation for fiction. Interpretation is like "on the first day, G-d created..." Let's see. Is that a 24 hour day or not. Well, the Hebrew word mean a expanse of time, not a 24 hour day. There is a different word in Hebrew for a 24 hour day. So, the writer in Genesis probably meant G-d created something over a period of time.

That's interpretation.

re: #250 Irenicum

I agree. Except that many people, many I know, accept them as theology. And the novels are based on the teachings of Dispensationalism, which is theology. And, in my mind, a modern novelty and dangerous to boot. Especially in this day and age.

A modern novelty? Please, don't talk about what you do not know about. Dispensationalism is far from a "modern novelty." Do you know how far back it goes?

And as I said, those books are not theology. Just because some people read them and go "well, that's probably is the way it will happen" has nothing to do with official doctrine of any given sect.

It would be the same as someone who believed in UFO and read a science fiction book and said "I believe that's how the aliens will look."

re: #251 Walter L. Newton

The writers of Left Behind, Tim Lehaye and Jerry Jenkins, both hold strongly to Dispensational beliefs. They write their fiction from their convictions. So while they are novels and shouldn't be taken as theology (I totally agree with that), I know too many people who do just that. Ad not just with that series. The whole Frank Peretti spiritual warfare series that he penned is very popular in charismatic circles and has basically shaped their view of spiritual warfare. Is it fiction? Yes. But do people read it theologically? Absolutely. And so it needs to be taken seriously, especially since they're so popular.

Ok, how about the entire half (13 books) of the New Testament that Saul/Paul supposedly wrote but that scholars say were ghost written between 700 and 1340 AD?

How about the entire book of Revelations that is just a written down bad mushroom trip. How about that millions of evangelical Christians in this country believe that the "Rapture" will occur before the tribulation?

All based on a 14 year old english girls "visions" and then a massive attempt ever since to read the scripture in such a way as to support a pre-trib rapture. There is no such thing in the bible, any thinking person who reads it for themselves knows that. It is bullshit, it is heresy, it is wishful thinking, and it most definitely is not actually Christian.

Myths about Marduk, Apsu and Tiamat go back further than any others in human history...does that make them as valid as dispensationalism?

If so, then the Enuma Elish is the official history of the creation.

You said those books were interpretation, they are not. They are fiction. You said Dispensational beliefs was a modern novelty, it is not. And then you change the subject and by telling me how people read the books theologically.

My comment to you was not how they read them, my comment to you was your misstatements. People read all sorts of fiction and start imagining the possibilities. That does not make it doctrine or theology.

re: #223 ausador

I did once have a wonderful discussion with an elderly Muslim gentleman who explained that according to some, the houri are 'young ladies who will have a nice time with you', but that he expected that his wife would 'kill me so much I would die even in heaven' if he took up the option.

I feel that Paul has done more to pervert the understanding of Jesus' message than anyone else in history. Yet he is revered as the founder of the Christian church, talk about an anti-christ? Yeah, he came and went already...

And where do you get your superior knowledge of the validity of which books Paul may have penned compared to which books he certainly didn't pen and which books are debatable as to if he penned them

And what do you really know about Paul's writing, any of it, as it compares to Jewish thought in the first century CE? Textual critics (you know that's like science) find many of Paul's arguments and exposition very much in keeping with early Rabbinic thinking. There were many "flavors" of Judaism at the time, and Paul very much fit's comfortably in the meme of Jewish thought of the time.

Where do you even get anything of what you are saying, or is all this personal belief that has no foundation in history, textual criticism, biblical and historical history or... basically it sounds like you are pulling what you are saying out of your ASS.

I can't say it any clearer.

302 Irenicum  Sat, Dec 26, 2009 10:38:19pm

re: #283 freetoken

We all come to the text involved, whether the Judeo/Christian scriptures or any other, from our cultural and personal context. And that shapes what we see deeply. I've in the past, and continue to now, research the ANE (ancient near east) along with the texts already mentioned. My views are pretty nuanced when it comes to those who call themselves "evangelical,' which I still do.

And as to your question of how many religious people know the languages or the cultural customs involved? Very, very few. That's why those who study these issues are necessary to help in the process of knowing more accurately what the original writers intended. I'm not a hard boiled sceptic regarding knowledge, so I do believe that we can know reality reasonably well. But I also know (!) that we all see through a glass darkly. And btw, I took 4 years of Greek in undergrad. I can't claim to have any expertise on any other language, but that one I know decently well.

The strict sense was what I meant. It doesn't surprise me, but what you are saying is a "revelation" to me. I wasn't aware that those sorts of books were suddenly becoming intrenched in the minds of some "enders" as the possible or actual sort of events that will take place.

Maybe I shouldn't be surprised. A simple example that I can relate to, when I was a Jehovahs Witness, back around 1974, in an article about the "end times" a comment was made that after the "rapture" Christians would be able to have any nice house that they saw was empty because the wicked would be gone. This was more of an "example" not a doctrine, but a few years later, I actually heard some people acting like that was a for sure ting, even though it was only an "aside" remark in an essay and not official doctrine.

So, I guess it happens.

Thank for that, Walter. Once again, your command of the facts astounds and humbles me, and your take-no-BS attitude inspires me.

It's such a tough nut to crack... that is, when discussing with someone who is strongly devoted to following one sect's beliefs to get them to accept that the doctrines to which they hold so dearly are just one set out of a very large universe of possibilities.

That's been my experience with many die-hard followers of the pop "dispensationalists" (e.g., Hal Lindsey).

I have a very simple and very basic faith, it is built around Jesus and his teachings. Not what Paul liked or didn't, not what the church likes or doesn't, not the rules written in Leviticus for Jews to follow to keep their civilization essentially jewish when I am a Gentile.

I believe because I chose to no matter the evidence or the skepticism I am subjected to, it is called "faith." I believe because I want to believe, and your wasting your time trying to change my mind.

That said I am also not your typical evangelical Christian who believes implicitly in a book written by and heavily edited by men. While not having any understanding of it's history or how the different versions came to be published as they are. I do not hate or fear those that do not believe as I do, nor am I out to overtly convert anyone.

Jesus said that we were to do that by our example, by showing love, by showing that our lives had meaning and purpose, by showing that we had an inner peace that others would want to find. We are supposed to live our lives as he tried to teach us, if we do then others will want to know what it is we "have" that they do not.

How you square that with the modern politicized church I simply don't know anymore, I have read a thousand times here how the church has hurt the GOP, how about how much worse the GOP has hurt the church?

My area of research is what happens when a "theology" goes public. What happens when it is popularized and then people, including public officials, base their actions on that understanding. I've lived in the evangelical subculture for many years and have seen this stuff up close and personal. It may seem arcane to non-theology types and look like ivory tower nonsense, but it has real-world consequences that can be either beneficial or terribly destructive. I believe in God, but I also believe in a better world in the here and now. That's why this is important to me.

IMHO it sounds like the real point of failure wasn't at the airport. There's only so much that can be done there. The failure to follow up on the father's warning is a greater fuckup. If a father is willing to turn in his own son you know things have to be pretty serious.

Agreed. Many of us having been saying for years, that to really have an impact, we need muslims themselves willing to speak up and turn their fellow muslims in where appropriate. In this case, we have a father, willing to inform on his son (likely in the hope that he is saving his son's life in doing so) and obviously too little is done about it. It is a shame, and is the kind of thing that may prevent others from doing the same.

The undisputed letters of Paul are arguably the best attested documents of the late first century CE than anything else we have. These circular letters are attested by early church fathers as early as the 2nd century. The gospel accounts were mostly written much later than any of Paul's writings. Mark may have been around the same time, but Luke and John were clearly later, even attested by early church fathers. Matthew is still disputed as to when it was written. I lean towards an early date. But to argue Paul as being as late as ausador has is simply ludicrous. By the way, Paul had many things to say that were pretty enlightened for the time concerning the issues you mentioned ausador. On this point, Walter is right. And again I say this as a Christian who disagrees deeply with his atheism.

Almost all believing Lizards here will agree that I never deny anyones faith or belief, even though I freely cop to being an atheist.

But, if you want to defend your faith with incorrect theology, doctrine, or history of your faith, I have no problem, nor do I feel there is anything wrong with pointing out to someone the scholarly facts. The last 2000 years of Christian history is full of wonderful studies of the faith and how it came to be, and it's the misinformation that many "pew sitters" spew that actually damages the faith and causes many of the evils that religion has spurned over the decades.

So, where as I don't take anyones faith lightly, I will not suffer the fallacies that so often diminish the faith.

Agreed Walter. On that we share a common ground. As a Christian, I want to argue my faith faithfully. And that means I must acknowledge the honest scholarship out there and not second hand tales that only confirm my ideological biases. As someone who straddles the liberal/conservative divide, I've seen how easy it is to let my temperament shape my "facts" so that they reconfirm what I already want to believe. We may not share a common faith, but it seems we share a common desire for honesty. I'm very grateful for that. It's late and I need to get up for church! Good night and be well Walter!

I do not in any way dispute that Paul was real, or that he was perhaps the person most responsible for the founding of the early orthodox (and slightly later roman catholic) church. However at minimum three of "his" testaments in the bible are complete fakes and date from much later than his original writings.

His writings have been used extensively to justify the worst acts of the church and continue to be used in that way. Exactly why should I believe anything that Paul supposedly said especially when it conflicts with the teachings of Jesus himself? Paul's writings vastly increased the scope of the "teachings" (rulings) of the Christian church, many of them seemingly intended to find a common ground and perhaps converts from Judaism. I do not and never have found Paul to be a credible source, maybe that is because I find his theology distasteful, maybe because I see the rational conflicts it creates when compared to the rest of the New testament, maybe because I am un-informed and irrational.

I have gone from being a Methodist to a evangelical to an atheist to a rabid anti-theist to an agonostic and then back to being Christian again over the course of my life. Only this time I am Christian on my own terms, not the creationist fairy-tale in genesis, and not the more hateful writings of Paul. Thomas Jefferson cut out all the "fanciful" parts of the bible he didn't like, I'm just following in his footsteps *cough*...

A jihadi terrorist in an airplane is a binary as well. It does require deceptive technology mixed together with suicidal intent, and can only go off with both available. I disagree that the technology was the component equalling the weakest link in the chain. The human intent is.

The knowledge how to smuggle, both by using common everyday items and by fooling behavior detection routines should be as widespread as possible, for it is useful not only to succeed against criminal government but against non-governmental crime as well. It is not the individual passenger who is dangerous, rather it is the tyranny that must be broken before it has monopolized global air traffic logistics under its rule in a megahub in the center of the Old World. Its prospective heirs wouldn´t attempt to detonate themselves in airplanes if they didn´t see it coming that such a development cannot play out well.

You can blow up a watermelon with one of those snap firecrackers you throw on the ground that go pop. Not particularly impressive. If you want to blow up more solidified material (metal, wood) you need a lot more explosive than that.

Also I don't get this nontroversy. The video doesn't tell you how to blow anything up. It's blatant fear-mongering, which i'm no fan of, but not a how-to guide for jihadists on how to make explosives. They do worse stuff on mythbusters.

Sorry, but you are missing the point.
I'm saying that the video is fake, and that we shouldn't be so scared. If many people see this video, they'll be (rightfully) scared - which is completely unnecessary.
You need to know what explosives can do before you should be scared of them, and this amount of explosive isn't going to do anything more than a fire cracker.
It'll just be used to make flying an even less enjoyable experience, which is something I'm trying to prevent by debunking that a very tiny explosive can vaporize a water melon...
THAT is my point.

Anyone who wants to make explosive, will find a way anyway. Chemistry textbooks aren't banned yet, and all the basics are in there.

You can maybe blow one up if you collect many of those, put them inside the water melon and let them go - I'm willing to believe that.
However, throwing one at a water melon is hardly going to do anything to the water melon...

The link is there, in my estimation, as proof of what Charles' title says- that hot air has indeed posted bomb making instructions. It's actually quite sunny where I am! Thanks for asking!

well, hon, I'm not your precious.
Charles did not link to the video as you claimed.
He linked to a HotAir post where HotAir posted the video.
It's a very simple fact.

359 Randall Gross  Sun, Dec 27, 2009 8:24:42am

The video is dangerous not because it demonstrates how to make a bomb. It's dangerous because it shows a method to create and conceal a bomb detonator in a pen.
JA, I think you are missing the maker of the video's intent here.

Ok, I'll play. You didn't make a valid point. Charles did not link to the video, he linked to the post on Hot Air.

re: #361 mioilman

In recent history, Hot Air has gone off the rails with its glorification of right-wing ideology. LGF has made note of this again and again. Given the tone of your rambling post, perhaps Hot Air is more suitable to your own ideology.

365 Randall Gross  Sun, Dec 27, 2009 8:33:52am

Just to point out the obvious since some folks are not getting this: had there been an effective detonator for the underwear bomb, such as the one posted in Ed's video, the passengers on that plane would not have heard a "pop" and would not be here today.

The video is dangerous not because it demonstrates how to make a bomb. It's dangerous because it shows a method to create and conceal a bomb detonator in a pen.
JA, I think you are missing the maker of the video's intent here.

If that is 'dangerous' information, then I guess that everyone with 2 working braincells is a danger to the state. Everyone with even the faintest idea about mechanics would have come up with the idea...
Sorry mate, but you're trying to see something that isn't there, and the point you make is certainly not the point of the video... I respectfully disagree with your conclusion.
i think the intent of the video is to scare people, nothing else.

re: #366 mr.JA

I agree with you that it's easy to make an effective bomb, and that people with knowledge can do so. I don't agree that spreading this information around somehow lessens the potential. There are a lot of stupid people in the world who are malicious, some information doesn't have to be easy to gain. Publicizing it makes it easier to gain.

369 Sharmuta  Sun, Dec 27, 2009 8:40:22am

re: #362 airforcemom

You're using an impossible standard. So- should Charles have never linked to the anti-Semitic diaries at DKos? You have also left no room for context in your standard. The video was posted at hot air to scare people, while Charles linked to hot air to criticize the article where the video was posted. The DKos diaries were posted to spread anti-Semitism, but were linked at LGF to criticize what it was DKos was allowing at their site. The way you make it sound, it's as thought Charles' link in and of itself is an endorsement simply because it's there, and the rest of Charles' words in his article mean nothing. The link doesn't exist in a vacuum. It is clear from the context that Charles is pointing out what the right-wing blogosphere has sunk to and it's not good.

370 elizajane  Sun, Dec 27, 2009 8:44:04am

Morrissey's point over at Hot Air is that our security measures are insufficient and we should imitate Israel's method of interviewing every passenger and pulling them out if they appear nervous or muslim or anything like that. I wanted to mention that I flew out of Amsterdam-Schiphol two weeks ago, on a Northwest/KLM/Delta flight to the USA like the one this terrorist attack happened on. And in fact every passenger was interviewed at the gate, pretty extensively. As far as I can recall, this was also done when I flew out of Amsterdam in the spring. So Amsterdam airport already uses this form of security and clearly it did not catch a quiet, well-spoken, middle-class terrorist.

Good. You two could be interesting if you begin by respecting each other.

Right, and just in case he didn't see it Ed posted it.

re: #451 airforcemom

Why would you question my motives when they are perfectly clear...I simply wanted someone to point out that a blogger can post whatever they want on their own blog.

I would not ask Charles to remove his link anymore than I would ask Ed to remove the video. They both have the right to post them.

No where in the article does Charles suggest that Ed Morrissey take down the IED instructional video. However, you are not entitled to determine what or what is not posted by Charles at this blog.

Charles can post what he sees fit, and Morrissey can post what he sees fit. We are free to criticize the latter. The authority here at LGF is Charles. Not you, not me. If you are not happy with what's going on here than I suggest you leave.

Two more idiots bite the dust. And four hate mails so far.

People really don't like having it pointed out that Ed Morrissey was incredibly irresponsible to post that video.

Seriously. I haven't seen so much passive aggressiveness this early in the morning in, maybe never, only occasionally in the late night hours.

re: #392 airforcemom

Honestly, I never gave it a second thought until I found out all of you people were in a snit-fit over it.

I put my sister on an airplane just as the news broke of this latest terrorist attack; it hit close to home.

But this video does not scare me. There are far more dangerous things on the internet to view and download.

Such as the comments at HotAir and Free Republic.

Another thing I love about LGF and haven't seen on any other site is...I can co-exist with people who have a very different ideology than I do. For example: Dark Falcon and reine.de.tout . I don't agree with them politically but I respect the hell out of them and enjoy their presence. At HotAir, you have to agree with the sites ideology or you're considered a troll and disrespected.

I had planned to respond to the Denier with some links, but happily he has been booted so they are not needed. Have fun, you two trolls. Enjoy the fleas at Hot Air!

Thank you for that. Its good to have a place where one can have a civil conversation.

479 emcesq  Sun, Dec 27, 2009 10:10:39am

A few things come to mind watching this fake video:
1) I find right-wing blogosphere intellectually incapable of spelling "vapourised"

2) melon is on a post with explosive mounted sideways so it gets blown off rather than "vapourised"

3) Explosives in a pen are as old as the darkest cold war days when little chilun were warned of bad evil imperialist dropping pens on the ground so the little young pioneers will get their hands blown off.

4) Even if the little bit was used to blow up a melon, what on earth do you do with 100 times the amount left in the mixing dish - take out a city block? How do you dispose of the stuff

5) video is at least 2 years old

And watching this hysterical religious debate that will not get anybody anywhere is quite disturbing - instead of trying to figure out what to do with the real danger. I personally favor descending to 10,000 feet, opening the aircraft door and kicking the asshole out.

No, killing the terrorist is a bad idea. We need to find out who supplied him with the bomb, and that is easier if he is alive for interrogation. A better idea would be to waterboard him.

And nothing makes me appreciate that more than occasions where the odd troglodyte does slip through, delivering a not-so-subtle reminder of the kind of discourse polluting the pages of other sites. It's gotten to the point where I can't even read the Comments sections of online newspapers, so infested are they with the sort of deranged, venom-dripping rants that make your brain blister and your eyeballs bleed.

re: #344 mr.JA

Erm, hot air isn't making anything easier, 'cause from this video there are no instructions or chemicals or amounts or whatsoever. Only some (probably made-up) properties, nothing more.
I've left a comment at breitbart, and will send an email to Ed.

Just to give an update - my email to Ed, laying out the arguments why the video is fake is now published on the Hot Air website.
As I said above, a similar comment at the Breitbart site was removed.

The breitbart comment is back, as pointed out in the comments @ Hot Air - my post first appeared, and was then gone for a couple of hours, and is now back.
Alternatively, I'm being thick and didn't look carefully. They also claim that i'm not a reader, but what do they know... i'm not registered at HA, but sometimes stroll around for a look.
