Note how someone has blurred the protesters' faces in the closeups.

The women are awe inspiring.

They are indeed brave. Remember Neda. LiveLeak's been featuring her death video since summer.

Man, I can't say how heartening I find these pics... Altho' the human cost is terrible, they're stepping up for themselves, and not really backing off (at least so far).

Here is the real prototype for change in the middle east, developing before our eyes.

I'm sure it was thought to be fake by many people. People who still want to see the birth certificate, people who are sure 9/11 is a government conspiracy, and people who think Ahmadinejad and Chavez are great guys.

I thought I saw the right and the left questioning the video. I don't know, right now I can find pro/con coming from both sides if I google it, but I've yet actually seen anything definitive on the subject.

I was just wondering. You answer doesn't answer my question any better than what I found by googling.

Is it not odd that the police shields all say "POLICE" instead of whatever the word is in Farsi script?

We always joke about that POLICE thing. Like you need to identify the guys with all the riot gear, standing in a neat line behind cordons, and firing tear gas, as police. Thanks, we'd never have know. :-)

There are some stills of this encounter in the slideshow, here's the video...
Riot Guards Beg for Forgiveness

People have cornered these security forces. People ask them 'why do you do this to your people?' and the riot guards ask for forgiveness, 'Bebakhshid' they can be heard to say.

'You are Yazid's - the Khalif against whom the Ashura uprising took place -forces', the woman shouts at them. One of the protesters then reassures them that they will not be beaten up, all they have to do is say Khameneii is a bastard. The woman can then be heard saying 'All you can do is kill your people is it?' and again they plead saying 'Please We are not killers'.

The sooner they join the people, the sooner they will redeem themselves with the people of Iran.

Being such a high security and domestic spying state, it's only natural for the POLICE to be watching every step they take.

re: #14 Walter L. Newton

The world heard of Neda's death from the Internet almost immediately after it happened. Since then we've heard from her music teacher, the man who was with her when she was shot. We've also heard from the doctor who tried to help her, who fled from Iran to Britain from fear of what the Iranian government might do to him, who was interviewed by the BBC. We've also heard from her boyfriend.

I'm completely certain that she's dead from the video alone. Added testimony from those involved only strengthens that certainty. In my mind anyone who wants to argue the video was fake is completely daft, hence my assigning them to the realm of nirthers and troofers and supporters of wanna-be dictators.

Yazidi

Are ethnic Kurds with their own religion (not Muslim or Christian). Almost certainly used as a slur.

Ah, similar to use of the term "Indie" (Indian). When I was in Arabic class, my instructor at first scolded me for saying I was half Indian (Native American) cause he thought I was using a crude insult. Multicultural political correctness blunder.

Watching this unfold in Iran, you might say that the GWB Iranian strategy of lots of talk but no action had in mind that the Mullahacracy could only be toppled from within and military attack by the USA on Iran would only work to unify the Iranian people behind the regime. The silent treatment from GWB was the one thing Ahmadinejihad couldn't have. Now its him and the kleptocrats versus the masses and everyone else is just standing back watching Iran unravel.
