Why I Left the Right, Exhibit H for Homophobia

Politics • Views: 15,459

Illinois Republican Senate candidate Andy Martin tries to get the GOP base on his side by accusing his primary opponent of the dreaded ghey.

Here’s the transcript of Martin’s ad:

I’m Andy Martin, Republican candidate for United States Senator. I approved this message because Illinois Republicans deserve the truth about their candidates.

I have over forty years of experience and integrity fighting corruption, and fighting for the truth in politics.

I helped expose many of Barack Obama’s lies in 2008.

Today, I am fighting for the facts about Mark Kirk. Illinois Republican leader Jack Roeser says there is a, “solid rumor that Kirk is a homosexual.” Roeser suggests that Kirk is part of a Republican Party homosexual club. Lake County Illinois Republican leader Ray True says Kirk has surrounded himself with homosexuals.

Mark Kirk should tell Republican voters the truth.

Smears don’t get much uglier than that.

Andy Martin, meanwhile, is a Birther who claims that Barack Obama is a sekrit Muslim Manchurian candidate. And that’s no “rumor.”

The most persistent falsehood about Senator Barack Obama’s background first hit in 2004 just two weeks after the Democratic convention speech that helped set him on the path to his presidential candidacy: “Obama is a Muslim who has concealed his religion.”

Well, Andy, Mark Kirk may or may not be a homosexual but you definitely suck.

4 Gretchen G.Tiger  Mon, Dec 28, 2009 3:19:21pm

What I don't understand is the lying part. Why lie?

I am more concerned about a person who lies, than a person who is homosexual.

5 Gretchen G.Tiger  Mon, Dec 28, 2009 3:20:16pm

"solid rumor" ???

Isn't that a fallacy of some sort. Or at least an affront to common sense?

And he won't release a single one until his demands are met.

To their credit the Illinois GOP distanced themselves from the ad:

The Illinois Republican Party disavows the statements made today by Mr. Andrew Martin in his statewide radio advertisements. His statements today are consistent with his history of bizarre behavior and often times hate-filled speech which has no place in the Illinois Republican Party. Mr. Martin will no longer be recognized as a legitimate Republican Candidate by the Illinois Republican Party.

In addition, it has been brought to our attention that Mr. Martin's sources are now denying any such statements or allegations. According to Raymond True, a leader of the Republican Party in Lake County:

"Mr. Martin did not contact me in any way before making his announcement. The comments attributed to me are completely false. I request through the media that Andy Martin cease and desist from making any additional statements that are incorrectly attributed to me."

Some good news though. He's been rebuked by the Illinois GOP:

Illinois GOP Rebukes "Bizarre" Andy Martin

No longer recognized as Republican candidate

A perennial political candidate with a history of ant-semitism and legal troubles was rebuked today by the Illinois GOP after he launched a radio ad insinuating that a more popular candidate for Senate was a homosexual.

"[Andy Martin's] statements today are consistent with his history of bizarre behavior and often times hate-filled speech which has no place in the Illinois Republican Party," said Pat Brady, chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, in a statement disavowing Martin's ad. "Mr. Martin will no longer be recognized as a legitimate Republican candidate by the Illinois Republican Party."

We do have this:
GOP disavows Martin

What do they do if he actually wins though?

The "Republican Party homosexual club" is probably Log Cabin Republicans, a national organization that dates back to the late 70s. It was originally formed when then Governor Reagan helped defeat some anti-gay legislation, neatly though temporarily undercutting the Dem monopoly on gay rights.

Litigation and anti-Semitic accusations

In 1982, Edward Weinfeld, a federal judge for the Southern District of New York, observed that Martin had a tendency to file "a substantial number of lawsuits of a vexatious, frivolous and scandalous nature."[9] In Martin's motion for the 1983 bankruptcy case, he called the judge "a crooked, slimy Jew who has a history of lying and thieving common to members of his race."[1] In another motion that year, Martin stated, "I am able to understand how the Holocaust took place, and with every passing day feel less and less sorry that it did."[1] He went on to say that "Jew survivors are operating as a wolf pack to steal my property."[12] When later pressed in an interview about his remarks, Martin claimed that the anti-Semitic comments were inserted into his court papers by malicious judges.[1]

During his 2000 run for president, he ran a television advertisement in Connecticut accusing George W. Bush of using cocaine. One of those members, Raymond True, the chairman of the conservative Republican Assembly of Lake County organization, says he never made any such statement.

That's all the hysterical demagogues need. It's practiced technique, and came from one of the conservative groups in Illinois who did not want to get their hands dirty.

Pandering to the base and the extremists within the base shows the stupidity of the panderer, in this case Mr. Martin. No candidate can win an election ONLY with support of the "base." And by going so far below the belt, even if Martin wins the GOP nomination, Independents won't touch Martin with a ten foot pole. The stupidity of this man is astonishing. According to Wing Nut World Net Daily, the controversy over GOProud’s participation at CPAC, sparked by social cons objecting to their presence, has brought a mixed response from conference organizers. While GOProud is being allowed to participate, including having a booth at the conference, it appears that they are not being allowed any kind of speaking role:

[American Conservative Union chief David] Keene admitted GOProud “has signed on as a CPAC co-sponsor, but will have no speakers and we told them that, in fact, since opposition to gay marriage, etc are consensus positions (if not unanimous) among conservatives, these topics are not open to debate.”

Far Right Death Threats

The arrest last week of Michael Heaton, or ‘Wigan Mike’ as he is better known, for “soliciting murder and using threatening, abusive or insulting words likely to stir up racial hatred” has unpleasant implications for far right internet users. The charges relate to the Aryan Strike Force (ASF) website. Heaton has a long history of Nazi activities and has also been involved with the English Defence League (EDL). His co-defendant Trevor Hannington was accused of “possessing information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism and disseminating a terrorist publication.”

Well, I've seen how these peoples' minds work, because I marvel at their nutbag comments on Hot Air and other blogs. They assume that all gay males are crazily promiscuous and reckless and therefore unsuitable for a family unit. They buy the idea that gay males are all potential pedarasts. And they buy all the shit they hear about how we're supposedly trying to convert kids to teh gheyzor, how only UH MAN AND UH WOMUN KIN RASE UH FAMUHLEE, how we plan to instruct kids on the finer points of sadomasochism at age 7 or something. Witness all the stuff around the safe-schools czar.

I know many gay couples who have relationships as secure and normal as any other male/female couple.

Thanks. I had forgotten. I left Illinois in 2003 for the great state of Maryland - home of the former Illinois US Senate candidate Allen Keyes. Keyes replaced a corrupt Republican who was forced to withdraw. That disastrous campaign allowed a little known Chicago politician, Barack Obama to go from the state legislature to the US Senate. We have the Illinois Republican party to thank for Obama - whom I like.

I think Obama would have beaten Jack Ryan (despite his Tom Clancy character name), but Alan Keyes is a hilarious joke and made Obama's campaign essentially unloseable.

I thought the whole idea of Tu Quoque was the fact that, true or false, you are answering an argument with another argument and not directly responding to a question. I thought Tu Quoque was a divisive debating technique, not a matter of true or false.

Strictly speaking, the argument made by Taqyia2me is not an example of Tu Quoque but is somewhat closer to what I once heard Robert Fisk describing as "whataboutery". Like Tu Quoque it can be used as a diversionary tactic, but the key to Tu Quoque is to "prove" that the opponent's argument is incorrect, because of an inconsistency between the opponent's premises or actions relating to them. It's a logical fallacy.

I'm lost at words at this. Thespian, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. But "homo sapiens"? What did he consider himself, an Homo sapiens superior?

214 andres  Mon, Dec 28, 2009 6:58:30pm

re: #107 beekiller

I guess I will never get what is so bad about homosexuality and why it freaks so many people out.

Oh, it's rather simple. It's unknown. You see, humans in general are very distrustful of what they don't know. And homosexuality (and sexuality in general), is tabu topic. What worsens the situation is the lack of studies of what constitutes "normal sexuality". Without the base of "normal sexuality", we can't really define what is a "deviant sexuality" (except for the extremes).

Add to the mix religion, specifically Christianity. It is a long held custom in Christianity to take out of context simple verses from the Bible to greatly emphasize the debater's point. There are a couple of verses in the Old Testament that speak against male homosexuality (not female, apparently). Taken out of context, it's quite easy to promote the idea that God hates homosexuality, and make a crusade seem heavenly-approved.
