May I Have Another Open Thread, Please, Sir?

Why, yes … you may!

It’s been a day of insanely uncomfortable travel, and it’s not over yet. This is being posted from my iPhone as I wait on the runway in a tiny cramped seat in a hot, stuffy plane, with a screaming baby two rows in front of me, and an overweight guy in the seat next to me who keeps nodding off and drooling on my shoulder. And it’s the last row, so the seat back doesn’t recline, but the guy in front of me has his seat all the way back, jamming my kneecaps all the way into my upper thighs. And this is after waiting an hour in a long line exposed to a frigid wind, to go through a security check by rude, irritable TSA drones.

Ain’t flyin’ fun?

Posting will probably be back to normal tomorrow, if my head doesn’t explode first.

Well, that is what they say.

You should be pretty pure by now.

How many TSA agents does it take to change a light bulb?

My elder cousin works for the TSA at St.Petersburg/Clearwater airport, man does he have it made. A few domestic flights and a lot of cargo, no international flights at all, those all go through Tampa. Basically they stand around a lot while getting good wages and great benefits.

I recall being a lad about 20, hopping a flight from Athens to Tel Aviv. The guard took my duffel bag and half unzipped it and asked me "What have you got in here." (I did have a few things I hoped to slip through)

I smiled and said, "Just a bomb."

He scowled at me past his mustache for a moment, then smiled and zipped my bag back up unsearched.

But many of us would rather have cheap airfare than expensive travel, even if the legroom is better. That's why we mostly don't buy first-class tickets as it is. They're just not worth it.

Whatever we do to make travel better, it won't make it "classy" unless oil prices go so high that air travel is for the few and the very few.

The market changes constantly. And the styles of things like travel, are now driven by price. You get what the market chooses.
Travel used to be comfortable, glamorous, even. But WE the consumer, prefer cheap. So that is what we are getting offered.

Oh yeah. Walking up and down the aisles. One flight we were all in back and everyone was standing around talking, some folks stretching, people smoking. It was almost like a club scene. Could walk up to the galley and ask for things like a cup or another drink. Cockpit door wide open.

We were only street performers, no threat to anyone. One would have thought we'd be ok, it being where theatre originated and all. But we were taken in by the undercover police who stepped right into the show and nicked us, told our friends we were being departed and off to the station where the real fun began.

The Athens secret police were quite aggressive, no nonsense, stopped us immediately while we were in the process of collecting the drachma coins which were all but worthless anyway, grabbing the hat full of coins and our gear.

They marched us to their police station and sat us on some benches for some time while they came and went, some in uniforms some plain cloths.

I got bored after awhile so I started fooling with a deck of cards, practicing little moves and such. A few times one of the coppers came over and started to watch, and I'd promptly stop and just ignore him, being a bit pissed off at the whole thing.

Eventually they found one who spoke english a bit, and he explained all the laws we had violated and sat us in the chiefs office. Typically we just sat there in silence for a while, wondering what was next, and he had his translator cop say: "Look, we have to deport you and all, but chief wants me to tell you if you do us a show, we will consider letting you go."

So we looked at each other and decided to thrash out some of the routine in their little squad room with at least thirty of them crowded in. Strangest audience we ever had.

They loved it, big sustained applause after the final number.

The english speaking copper's mustached face was all glowing now and said in his thick accent:

"You leave the Athens secret police with a wonderful memory."

So being me, I looked at him and said:

"Ok, so can we do our show in the street now or what?"

"No, no, this is strictly prohibited without the permit, ordinance number 321 and such.

We left the next day unable to work. Athens aint what it used to be.

He was a homosexual and lived a wicked open life, which is typical of the fashion industry throughout the world. He spent time in psychiatric institutions and was a drug addict. His homosexual partner, Pierre Berge said, Saint "played a part" in liberating women. The fact is Saint was no "saint" but a wicked vile sinner who committed an "abomination." Who did more to hurt the women in this world than most. He liberated no one, but instead help to enslave them under the bondage of Satan and his devices. He hlep to tare down the walls of modesty, equal rights, women's lib, and feminity. Linda Grant a British journalist said this about pantsuits, "put women on an equal sartorial footing with men and 'is what fashion gave to feminism." Pants are a man's clothing and should not be worn by a lady. Pants goes against the Word of God, modesty, virture, womenhood, decency, and God given feminity. He now is probally a believer in modesty based on his life and lifestyle. He now has become a slave to hell, and his chance for liberty is gone for all eternity. This is very very sad. Maybe there is some hope of getting the gospel of Jesus Christ to others like Yves who invent faashions, to invent modest clothing for ladies.

Well, I know when the 'New Look' landed, women protested with signs that said "Burn in Hell Mr. Dior", but that was mostly about the stupid wasp waists.

Pantsuits have never struck me as being especially godless. They cover you all up.

I don't care if you're a fundie or atheist, feminist or macho, Lady GaGa's ideas of fashion are a SIN AGAINST NATURE.

104 SanFranciscoZionist  Thu, Dec 31, 2009 1:06:22am

This is awful if real. Weird either way:

My question is to resolve a debate between myself and another Bible studier. Could any of us be unknowingly walking around with Nephilim DNA and not know it? I don’t think so, but my friend disagrees…she is actually convinced that physically attractive, tall, well-built, intelligent people could be descendants of Nephilim. She has even suggested that my soon-to-be husband and myself are probably descended from Nephilim! Needless to say, this really freaks me out! I don’t want to worry that I have Nephilim DNA, or that my future husband may (we are both tall and athletically built and he is a handsome and mechanically brilliant man). Please, any insight at all would be tremendously helpful. I love my Jesus with all my heart and can’t bear the thought of being separated from God in eternity due to genetic circumstances beyond my control.

Actually, I'm getting ideas for fiction writing from all this stuff. It's a gold mine. From the Top 100:

No, God's Penis is not a biological organ. I never said God's Penis was the same as man's penis. Obviously it wouldn't be. That is why I pointed out God has a Holy, Righteous Penis. That is to say, it's not the same as man's corrupted, fleshy one.

As I said when this subject first came up, once again: Penises are not just for sex & peeing. It is only because man is evil that he thinks of penises exclusively in those terms.

Man is made in the image of God the Father. That is the primary reason why man has a penis.

You cannot insert your evil prejudicial ideas of man's penis onto God - which is exactly what you are doing. God's Penis is not equal to man's penis. It's really not hard to understand.

The Argument from design.

Points on Earth which exhibits design.

1) Rotating Earth.
2) The sun shining on the earth at just the right angle to produce life and enough energy.
3) Just the right atmosphere needed for life.
4) Plants breathe out what we breathe in.
5) A cell can't form in one spot and then migrate to every place on earth to fill it with cells.
6) Ants can't do that either. How did ants get to different parts of the world?
7) Just the right atmosphere for the earth to produce grass for the cows to eat.
8) How did grass grow first? I don't see grass on any other planets. Hmmm. Thank God for that sun.
9) The miracle of childbirth. It can't just evolve like that.
10) The sun stays in the sky instead of falling down. Gravity should be pulling it down but it just stays right up there. Hmmmm...interesting.
11) We are smart. If we share a common ancestor with monkeys, I found it remarkable that we are so smart and they are so dumb. How did we get so smart?

120 Gus  Thu, Dec 31, 2009 1:26:10am

These are too much:

Extinction versus Reprogramming

1) Extinction
One solution to the barbarities of predation is to use indiscriminate depot-contraception on carnivores and allow predators rapidly to die out, managing the resultant population effects on "prey" species via more selective forms of depot-contraption. Such advanced computer-controlled contraception technologies could be used selectively on zebra, buffalo, wildebeest, etc, so our wildlife parks don't become overpopulated...

2) Reprogramming
Alternatively, should carnivorous predators be genetically "reprogrammed" or otherwise behaviourally modified rather than allowed to go extinct in the "wild"? Pre-reflectively, such reprogramming is all but impossible. In practice, the technical expertise is probably a few decades away at most...

I do not fear gays, far from it, but I do have a shit load of disgust and a total lack of respect for gays as is my God given right to. My daughters life is one giant train wreck after another. I didn't raise her that way, I was military strict, I blame the public schools mostly, they made it okay to not do as your parents say and actually undermined my authority .
So, if one must call me names, bigot or fag hater fits me better than homophobic and I'm perfectly fine with it.

Rick Warren speaks:

I believed that evolution and the account of the Bible about creation could exist along side of each other very well. I just didn't see what the big argument was all about. I had some friends who had been studying the Bible much longer than I had who saw it differently...Eventually, I came to the conclusion, through my study of the Bible and science, that the two positions of evolution and creation just could not fit together. There are some real problems with the idea that God created through evolution... My prayer is that you will have this same experience!

The Bible's picture is that dinosaurs and man lived together on the earth, an earth that was filled with vegetation and beauty...man and dinosaurs lived at the same time...From the very beginning of creation, God gave man dominion over all that was made, even over the dinosaurs.

And:

Just because I like pizza it doesn’t mean I should marry it. Biologically, I am predisposed to enjoy the immaculate melding of mozzarella cheese, red sauce and thick crust baked to tasty perfection. But that doesn’t mean I should enter into a lifelong commitment with Sicilian or plain, nor bed it down, nor bring children into the world and have them have to explain to their classmates why their mom’s crust is not a crisp as it once was. Does any child deserve to have their friends tossing Monday 2 for 1 coupons in his face? Not in my world they don’t. Yet, to say that I am against pizza-eaters or gays is absurd. Our Saddleback Church offer more weight-watchers meetings to overeaters than any other evangelical megachurch on the west coast.”

To those of you not in Indy, we lost a nice old lady last night. People bash drug companies left and right but Lilly's has always been a great company to have in our city.

[Link: www.indystar.com...]

Ruth Lilly, the noted philanthropist and last surviving great-grandchild of pharmaceutical magnate Eli Lilly, died late last night at 94, a family spokesman said.

Over the course of her life, Ms. Lilly gave away the bulk of her inheritance, an estimated $800-million. That’s more than the cost of Lucas Oil Stadium.

Yet to many, she was just a name on a building — a library, a hospital wing, a theater, museum exhibits. Ms. Lilly lived reclusively, was perhaps the most famous person few people ever saw.
.....
She gave to a wide variety of causes — colleges, hospitals, the National Easter Seals Society. But it was her unexpected donation of $100-million in 2002 to an obscure, Chicago-based poetry association that revealed something deeply personal: Ms. Lilly was a poet at heart. Not only did she read it, she wrote it, though to little acclaim.

Malaysian Court Rules that Christians Have Right to Use the Word "Allah"
The court was ruling on a lawsuit filed by Malaysia's Roman Catholic Church in late 2007 after the government blocked non-Muslims from translating God as Allah in their literature.

Authorities have insisted that Allah is an Islamic word that should be used exclusively by Muslims to refer to God, and its use by other religions would be misleading.

I miss marching in that parade. But, at the same time, I've seen how much the parade has changed since the 60's. Route, the bands have changed the way they outfit the bands (less marchers with headsets), they let large "props" on the street (rule use to be if a single person couldn't carry it into the performing area, you couldn't have it, you were a band, not a roving theatrical show) and so on...

Times change.

The veterans hospital was north on Broad Street, the parade route use to wrap around city hall and continue up Broad Street. The hospital was 10 or so blocks up from City Hall.

Somali tried to board plane with chemicals, syringe

A man tried to board a commercial airliner in the Somali capital of Mogadishu last month with chemicals that authorities believe could have been used as an explosive device, an African Union official said Wednesday.

The suspect, Abdi Hassan Abdi, tried to board a Daallo Airlines flight with a plastic bag containing 600 grams of ammonium nitrate and half a liter of concentrated sulfuric acid in a plastic bottle, according to Wafula Waminyinyi, the deputy special representative for the African Union Mission for Somalia.

Waminyinyi said that Abdi also had approximately 5 milliliters of an unidentified liquid in a syringe that he tried to carry on board the flight, which was bound first for the northern Somali city of Hargeisa, then Djibouti, and then Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. He said that the African Union believes the chemicals could have caused an explosion.

The details bear resemblance to those from the Christmas Day attempt to blow up a Northwest flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Detroit, Michigan.

Disturbing.

Of course. Recall though that the WT is the former home of RSM, has been reported on by the SPLC since 2003 for its attempts to mainstream extremism and racism (such as links to VDARE) and is owned by the Rev Moon.

The financial trouble the WT is in seems linked to the Unification Church and specifically a power struggle between two of Moon's sons about who will take over. (I can go dig up the link if you want).

This hasn't been a honeymoon though-- that's in the spring, we hope. We've been putting together stuff for the visa application process-- lots of legal crap to do.

On the plus side, yesterday we had our own private 'wedding'-- just the two of us and the vows we'd written.

they have their share of dirtbags and their demise is not a cause for tears. the people and the marketplace tend to root out many bad actors (like this crew) without the need for government enforcement. We're still better than that.

A New Year's Thought ...

No matter how tough things get, you still have to be able to laugh. People who can find one reason each day to have a good laugh HAVE to have better mental health than those who don't.

If each of us can make five other people laugh then we can achieve a critical mass of drooling mirth.

Walter, as far as I am concerned, a passenger should not even be considered as a line of defense against anything that might happen on a flight.
In fact, it should be discouraged, otherwise we stand to have a lot of cowboying.
In the event that unusual circumstances arise, rest assured that your fellow travelers are ready willing and able to act.

Ever been on a flight to South America and back?
The clapping you hear on landing is not because the Tigres won a soccer tournament, it is the appreciation for a successful flight.
Multiply that by the appropriate percent for us as targets and you have very aware travelers without the fanfare.
Don't work for the industry, just facts as I see them, long winded but friend, not foe.

9/11 Truthers Foiled by 12/25 Attack

By Michael Shermer

Hey 9/11 Truthers, CNN is reporting that al Qaeda just took credit for the Northwest Airlines terrorist attack:

“Be prepared to suffer because the killing is coming and we prepared you men who love death just as you love life and by God’s permission, we will come to you with more things that you have never seen before. Because, as you kill, you will be killed and tomorrow is coming soon. The martyrdom brother was able to reach his objective with the grace of God but due to a technical fault, the full explosion did not take place.”

—al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

Still think that al Qaeda did not orchestrate 9/11? Still think this is all an “inside job” by the Bush administration? Just who do you think Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab worked for? George Bush? Abdulmutallab’s own father ratted him out after he was radicalized by Muslim extremists—was that all part of the “inside job” as well? What was that sewn up in his underwear, the same superthermite that Bush operatives used to bring down the World Trade Center buildings with planted explosive devices?

Will someone from the 9/11 Truth camp please wake up and accept the fact that when al Qaeda takes credit for 9/11, says that they would do it again, and then tries, we should take them at their word.

For those in New York, the drain awaits. The state is out of money, and has more than a billion dollars in obligations coming due in the next few weeks with no money to cover for it.

And why is the state in this mess? Let me count the ways. How about putting forth a state budget that was $10.3 billion larger than last year despite a recession and Wall Street taking it on the chin (which is the single largest contributor to the state revenues). They increased spending by 8.3%, and now wonder why the state faces nothing but red ink as far as the eye can see?

Blame rests on Gov. Paterson for proposing a budget larger than last year, but special blame rests on the legislature, who saw Paterson's budget and demanded even more spending. They pushed billions in extra spending that the state had no money to cover, and now the state faces fiscal ruin.

Nice.

Yeah, and apparently it's also affecting NJ as AC casino revenues are down significantly, which is due to a combination of factors including higher taxes and fees, competition from NY, CT, and PA casinos/racinos/VLTs, and that AC isn't an international or national destination the way Vegas is despite the fact that it could be if the locals and state deemed it a priority.

Sadly, there was no mention of Spitzer or McGreevey, and yet they were two of the biggest political stories (or political disasters) of the decade. McGreevey's apology in particular, was epic for its hilarity and ignored the real reason he needed to exit stage left; he wasn't merely resigning because he was a gay American, but because he tried to put his lover in a position he was wholly unqualified to fill - homeland security director for NJ.

My father and I once had a huge argument over when the new millennium started. He said 2000, and I said it was 2001 because there was no year zero. My father insisted, so I said you don't start counting with zero. We consulted the World Almanac and Book of Facts. It sided with me, but that still wasn't enough. The absence of a zero year in or calendar system is a gigantic, annoying pain in the ass for those of us who have had to write calendrical software spanning what ought to be a mathematically smooth transition, but instead becomes a discontinuity.

Personally, I like to keep years that start with a particular decadic number together. This involves beginning the count with zero, but that's considered completely sensible, especially in computer circles. The downside is that the "first" decades AD and BC each only have nine years in them, but my attitude toward that is "tough." 'Cause in real life, it just doesn't matter, but when I refer to "the Twenties," in mean everything including the year 1920 (or 2020, when that occurs), not 1921 through 1930.

I'll defer discussion of the anomaly introduced by the switch from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in October 1582 (which can be seen here if you select that month) with it's discarding of the fifth through the fourteenth of the month for another time.

My friend works at a hospital and I went to see him a few months back. The security guard stopped me and said I had to sign in. I asked him if he needed to see my I.D. and he said no. So, I could have signed in as Slappy McDuck and it would not have mattered.

I felt compelled to ask the guy what this accomplished. How would this stop me from blowing up the hospital or attacking someone? If I blew up the hospital, would it help the cops to know that they should be looking for Slappy McDuck? I didn't ask, of course, because it would probably just get me in trouble and interfere with me seeing my friend.

Well you have to give wikipedia a break, pretty much anyone can edit, and apparently it was corrected after only about 15 minutes or so. Here is what it said though...

Rush Hudson Limbaugh III (pronounced /ˈlɪmbɔː/;born January 12, 1951, died December 30, 2009) is an American radio host and conservative political commentator. He is the host of The Rush Limbaugh Show, the highest-rated talk-radio program in the United States. It airs throughout the U.S. on Premiere Radio Networks.

Illusion of security is right.

When I was in college there was a hospital across the street from our campus. The student lounge (where all the vending machines were) closed at 10 pm, so often someone would walk across the street, through the ER entrance, down a couple of hallways to their 24 hour snack bar and get some food.

Then one day a patient was raped, and the perp came in the ER door. So security was enhanced. After that, the guard would ask what we were doing there, and "We're from the college hoping to go to the snack bar." was an acceptable answer.

The holidays have been great this year, but we're both ready for some serious downtime.

Short answer: Nothing.

Longer answer: Nothing at all. I hate New Year's. It's a pointless, depressing social holiday that I've never once been able to participate in, for numerous reasons (usually financial).

I'm probably going to screw around on the internet until 10 or so and then go to bed.

U.S. Jobless Claims Drop to Lowest Level Since 2008 (Update2)

Companies are retaining staff as sales improve and production picks up. Gains in consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of the economy, may encourage more hiring in coming months, helping to bolster the rebound from the worst recession since the 1930s.

“It’s boding well for outright job growth,” said Stephen Gallagher, chief U.S. economist at Societe Generale in New York, who forecast claims would drop to 430,000. “It seems that some of the layoffs that took place in the early part of the year were excessive.”

Can't wait to get out of my office to start the celebrations. New Year's Eve is definitely the worst clusterf*ck night of the year in NYC, so I'm laying low with my friends. On the menu for tonight, various cheeses and bellota pata negra ham. Followed by handmade chicken liver and ricotta ravioli, as well as goat cheese and mascarpone ravioli with scallions and toasted pignoli, topped with a roasted black olive butter sauce. For dessert, a fresh cantaloupe sherbet, and assorted chocolate dipped cookies I made last night.

Outstanding selections

Homemade real pasta is right up there with fresh bread, accept no substitutes!

Now that I have an electric rolling machine (the kitchenaid stand mixer attachment) it's sooooo much easier to make. Although every corner of my apartment inevitably becomes dusted with flour.

Me too. Going out to the bars is just an invitation to get gouged. You go to a bar that never charges a cover and always has $4 beer on tap, and suddenly you are charged $25 to get in and the beer is $6. All so we can count from 10 to 1.

I try to just go to parties. Unfortunately, as I get older, they are getting more rare.

Last year some friends of mine had a dinner party. They cooked Thai food and had plenty of good wine and other drinks. Plenty of room in their house to crash, so no driving home to worry about.

After dinner we played Trivial Pursuit. Do we know how to party, or what?!

WorldNetDaily Wants Us to Know How Many People Hate It

Chelsea Schilling has published the best WorldNetDaily article in my recent memory, an expose of the many, many, many names that WND Editor-in-Chief Joseph Farah has been called on Wikipedia. To wit:

Wikipedia’s profile page for Farah has dubbed him “homophobic,” a “conspiracy theorist,” “white supremacist,” a “proud member of the Ku Klux Klan,” a “religious nutcase” and “a pioneer in the political uses of psychedelics.”

“He also enjoys chowing down on babies once in a while,” stated one Aug. 7, 2008, entry.

The Conspiracy deepens!

Nice catch by Andrea Nill — Queen’s Medical Center, where Rush Limbaugh is being treated after experiencing chest pains yesterday, happens to be a crucial location in the birther mythos. A UPI article mistakenly identified that hospital, not the Kapi’olani Medical Center, as the birthplace of Barack Obama. And even though the article was corrected, the “no one can say where Obama was born” myth has persisted.

This is an outrageous outrage that surely means something about something to someone - if it didn't it wouldn't be so outrageous!

Just remember to take care of your heart!

Pump, pump, pumps your blood!

The right atrium’s where the process begins, where the C02 blood enters the heart.

Through the tricuspid valve, to the right ventricle, the pulmonary artery, and lungs.

Once inside the lungs, it dumps its carbon dioxide and picks up its oxygen supply.

Then it’s back to the heart through the pulmonary vein, through the atrium and left ventricle.

Pump, pump, pumps your blood!
Pump, pump, pumps your blood!

The aortic valves, where the blood leaves the heart, then it's channeled to the rest of the bod.

The arteries, arterioles, and capillaries too bring the oxygenated blood to the cells. The tissues and the cells trade off waste and C02, which is carried through the venules and the veins

Through the larger vena cava to the atrium and lungs, and we're back to where we started in the heart.

Pump, pump, pumps your blood!

Ed Morrisey declares Tea Party activists the "person of the year"....

The Person of the Year was the Tea Party Activist. No one had a greater, obvious, and unexpected impact on the world than the perhaps-millions of people who suddenly rediscovered citizen activism and accountability from elected officials. Not only did they turn out for barely-organized protests around the country in April and July, they showed up at rallies at ad-hoc events, and they flooded town-hall meetings. Their advent frightened the powerful so much that some refused to show their faces in public (Uh, maybe that was because of the death threats - ed) in a season when fund-raising and handshaking are as traditional as pennant races in baseball.

Lol. I don't care how you feel about the Tea Parties, they accomplished nothing aside from making conservatives look like lunatics.

My brother has been making ravioli for the last few holidays. He took a combo of raviolis to a Thanksgiving dinner (pumpkin, wild mushroom, and cheese). For Christmas he made crab ravioli.

The latter was interesting since crab has such a delicate flavor. Mascapone doesn't have too much flavor so it works as a filler with the crab. Spicing has to be pretty delicate. I think we settled on a bit of white pepper and a little bit of lemon juice. Worked out pretty well with a spicy red sauce - though my sister-in-law didn't like it.

I think this weekend is going to be some serious cooking. Got a food processor for a present, so I'm more willing to try some recipes that were a lot of work when I just had access to a blender, hand electric mixer, or hand-chopping everything.

A gunman clad in black went on a shooting rampage Thursday, killing his ex-girlfriend then slaying four workers at a suburban shopping mall near Helsinki before turning his gun on himself, police said.

Finnish police said one woman and three men were shot dead Thursday morning at the Sello shopping mall in Espoo, six miles (10 kilometers) west of Helsinki. All four were mall employees.

The gunman was identified as 43-year-old Ibrahim Shkupolli, an immigrant who had been living for several years in Finland, police superintendent Jukka Kaski said at a news conference.

Shkupolli killed his ex-girlfriend in a nearby apartment with an unlicensed handgun before heading to the mall, Kaski said.

The ex-girlfriend, a Finnish woman born in 1967, also worked at the mall and had taken out a restraining order against Shkupolli, Kaski said. He refused to speculate if the four workers had been targeted by the shooter.

You'll find that a stand mixer will make all of your baking vastly better. I got the Mrs. a Kitchen Aid a few years back, and she had an older mixer that didn't work too well or a hand mixer, and never could get the creaming just right.

Now, it's spot on every time, and that improves the texture of the cakes and cookies.

The same goes for whipping egg whites.

Hundreds of demonstrators rallied on opposite sides of an Israeli-Gaza border crossing on Thursday to protest the blockade of the seaside territory imposed by Egypt and Israel.

In Gaza, about 100 international activists gathered with some 500 Gazans, chanting and carrying signs denouncing the blockade.

A small number of anti-Zionist, Orthodox Jews were among them — a rare sight in Gaza.

Rabbi Dovid Feldman, from New York, said he came to Gaza for the march with three others from the small Neturei Karta sect, which denounces Israel's existence.

I have the food mill/meat grinder attachment, as well as the pasta roller, linguini cutter and spaghetti cutter.

Haven't used the grinder for anything except meat, but it works pretty great. You haven't had a great hamburger until you've had one that you grind up fresh and hand-form yourself immediately before it hits the griddle.

The pasta roller is highly recommended as well, along with the spaghetti and linguini cutters. I have heard that the ravioli stuffer attachment is terrible, but I don't have that one. Frankly I'm not sure why you need a ravioli stuffing machine to begin with, it's pretty fast to do by hand.

In a setback for U.S. investigators probing links to the attempted attack on a Detroit-bound airliner, a Somali official said Thursday that another suspect who tried to board a plane with chemicals already had been freed.

His release earlier this month will hamper efforts to learn if the incident in Mogadishu was linked to the attempted attack against the U.S.-bound plane on Christmas Day. Terrorism analysts had said the arrest in Somalia could prove highly valuable to the U.S. investigation.

The United Nations plans to temporarily relocate some of its international staff outside of Pakistan for security reasons following attacks that have killed at least 11 of its personnel in the country this year, a spokeswoman said Thursday.

The move comes about two months after the U.N. decided to suspend long-term development work in volatile areas near the Afghan border. Both decisions could complicate international efforts to win hearts and minds in Pakistan, where a raging Taliban-led insurgency has killed over 500 people in the past two and a half months.

The Nigerian suspected in the attempted attack on a U.S. airliner had stayed on in Yemen illegally after his visa expired three months ago and should have been stopped by authorities from leaving the country, Yemeni security officials said Thursday.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab spent time in Yemen on two occasions before the attempted Christmas Day attack on a Detroit-bound Northwest Airlines flight.

Yemeni officials said Abdulmutallab's student visa for Yemen, where he studied Arabic at a local language institute, was valid from Aug. 4 to Sept. 21.

After his visa expired, the 23-year-old stayed on in Yemen until the first week in December, they said, but his whereabouts in the country is unknown.

Pesto is a classic dish that becomes almost stupidly simple when you have a food processor. Apparently making pasta dough using the processor is all of the rage these days as well. Even Lidia Bastianich exclusively features food-processor based pasta dough recipes in her cookbooks now. Call me a traditionalist (or someone without a food processor) but I never really found making it by hand using the well technique to be too hard.

I use the basic Mario Batali recipe, adjusted for measurement by weight instead of volume. I simply use 3 oz of all-purpose flour for every large egg, and that's it. Just form the flour into a nest shape, crack your eggs into the middle, and then slowly start expanding your well outwards, incorporating the walls of your nest into the egg as you go. Once it turns into a shaggy dough, just knead the hell out of it for approx. 10 minutes until it's springy and tender. Throw it in a ziploc bag, rest for 30 minutes and then roll out using your pasta machine.

I have a deep freeze, so I just keep it in there, it would take up quite a bit of room in your day to day freezer. As with all Ice cream makers (I think) you still have to firm the mixture up after making--if you want.

On implementing a nonpolitical health care cost cutting practice. We could cut MRSA related deaths and save billions annually in the process.

All it takes is a collective effort to stop asking for, and for doctors to willingly supply, antibiotics for every cough, sniffle, and sneeze even when it isn't medically called for.

If the US adopted the Norwegian antibiotic use standards, we could reduce MRSA deaths significantly (saving 19,000 lives a year), and $6 billion in direct health care costs. We'd save even more in reduced spending on antibiotics in general.

There was a bit of discussion a while upthread about year "0" and year "1". It really doesn't matter because the number of the year is really arbitrary, so you can pick whichever one you like. If anybody had Jesus' birth certificate, I'm damn sure it doesn't say 0 or 1. Come to think of it, how do we really know what year it is anyway? On the Jewish calender, it's year 5800-ish. But how do you know that somewhere over the millenia somebody didn't lose count? Now, I know it's 2009 because my clock on the computer says so. But how do we know that someone didn't mess up Screw it, I'm going home Happy new year!!!

Iranian hardline authorities ordered their opponents on Thursday to cease anti-government protests and denied an opposition website report that troops were heading for Tehran ahead of a planned opposition rally.

The authorities have signaled they will tolerate no more protests after eight people were killed in fiery demonstrations on Sunday during the Shi'ite ritual of Ashura. A nephew of opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi was killed the same day.

State television showed a group of pro-government demonstrators wearing white shrouds and carrying placards that read: "We are ready to sacrifice our lives for the leader" -- referring to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The Jaras opposition website said troops and armored vehicles were moving toward Tehran and that security forces had deployed in several city squares to foil the opposition rally.

Mmm... pesto. Good idea. Time to think about converting the sunny corner of the apartment into a small herb garden again. Have very tall south and west facing windows so I get lots of sun there. (And it's always sunny in Philadelphia...)

I think the New Year's resolution is going to be a pantry cleaning and general re-arrangement of the kitchen. From there I'll see how well I can find and incorporate more fresh produce and full-scale home-cooking into my diet. Cooking for one is sometimes a real pain since most recipes are scaled for 4+ people.

And it's hard to host co-workers and friends for dinner since most of them do not live nearby. Co-workers commute much further than I do, and I travel out to the suburbs for a lot of my social interactions.

Oh! I completely forgot to mention the ice cream maker attachment. Oh my god, it is probably my favorite attachment of them all. Makes the most unbelievably smooth and delicious ice cream you have ever had in your life. I can provide recipes if you wish.

The main key I have discovered is that the temperature of your mixture is of extreme importance. If you are making French ice cream which contains eggs and is cooked to 180 degrees to set the custard, you must make sure to cool it down before mixing. At least to 40 degrees, and even lower if possible. The colder your mix, the faster it will freeze when mixing, creating smaller ice crystals and a smoother texture.

The other amazing thing you can make is fresh sherbet. Not the neon colored supermarket goo, something completely different and unbelievable. Basically you take a slightly sweetened fruit juice mixture, and then lightly fold that into an equal amount of fresh whipped cream. Then take that mixture and pour directly into the ice cream machine. It freezes up so light you wouldn't believe. It almost floats off your spoon. And if you use fresh squeezed juice, wow.

Amneh Muna is high on the Hamas list of Palestinian prisoners to be exchanged for the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. Serving a life sentence, she has become a symbol of female Palestinian prisoners, a hard-line agitator for Palestinian prisoners' rights and a constant thorn in the side of her Israeli incarcerators. But the crime she has been convicted of is so heinous in the eyes of Israelis that few see any justice in letting her go, even for the freedom of one of their own soldiers.

Nine years ago, Muna seduced a 16-year-old Israeli boy over the Internet, luring him into a liaison that resulted in his death. Muna was a 24-year-old Palestinian journalist from the West Bank city of Ramallah when she began trawling Internet chat rooms at about the time of the second intifadeh. She soon found Ofir Rahum, a schoolboy from the Israeli city of Ashkelon. She said she was a newly immigrated Moroccan Jew named Sali, and she soon initiated a sexually charged cyber-relationship. The young man was bedazzled that an older woman was so passionate about him.

SNIP

In her confession, Muna described how she met Rahum in Jerusalem on that day in January 2001, took a taxi with him to the northern suburbs and from there drove him in her car to the Palestinian city of Ramallah. The two cities almost touch. Rahum probably didn't know he had left Jerusalem. Muna told police she intended to hold Rahum as a hostage to prod the Israelis to release Palestinian prisoners. But in Ramallah, one of her co-conspirators, Hassan al-Qadi (a "senior armed terror operative," according to Israeli intelligence), allegedly shot the boy dead at point-blank range.

Angolan energy firm Sonangol initialled two deals with Iraq on Wednesday to develop oil fields in the north of the country, oil ministry spokesman Assem Jihad said.

The two agreements completed the initialling of seven deals reached between Baghdad and foreign energy firms earlier this month that aim to ramp up Iraq's oil output five-fold.

The Iraqi government reached the deals during a two-day oil field auction which dramatically increased the country's projected crude production to 12 million bpd within seven years, from around 2.5 million bpd presently.

Iraq has the world's third largest oil reserves, behind only Saudi Arabia and Iran, with an estimated 115 billion barrels.

December is usually a festive month in Caracas. But this year, beneath the Christmas tree at a private school in the affluent Caracas neighborhood of Los Palos Grandes, the topic among parents is dread. December is probably the worst month for kidnapping in Venezuela, and a 10-year-old Palos Grandes girl was recently snatched from her chauffeur-driven car and held for 10 hours until her family paid a ransom of more than $25 million. "Very few people I know have not been in a robbery or kidnap situation," says one Venezuelan businessman as he and the other parents greet two security experts the school has invited to counsel them. "Even my own mother was victim of a kidnapping."

As part of their presentation, David Rappe and Andy Chelini of the security firm Beyond Risk play excerpts from Secuestro Express (Kidnap Express), a 2005 film about a Caracas couple's abduction that has since become the highest grossing film in Venezuelan history. The movie is an effective teaching tool, the men say, because its story breaks a kidnapping down into its several stages. They also play a real recording of a frightening exchange between a kidnapper and a negotiator. "They are going to come at you with the threat of violence and death," Rappe warns his audience. But he points out that 98% of abductions result in a release, and most deaths usually result from pre-existing medical conditions. (See why Colombians are leaving their country for Venezuela.)

Sessions like these are becoming increasingly common in Venezuela, which now has the western hemisphere's highest kidnapping rate to add to its exploding violent-crime epidemic. (Caracas suffers some 40 murders each weekend.) There are as many as five abductions each day in the capital alone - and an estimated 4 out of 10 kidnapping cases across the country are never reported because, as in so many other Latin American countries, locals fear their corrupt police forces themselves are often involved in the crimes. Sources inside Venezuela's federal crime-investigation agency, known as the CICPC, concede that police have been involved in kidnappings, adding that even two officers from the CICPC's anti-extortion and -kidnapping unit are under investigation.

A recent survey by the independent Venezuelan Observatory of Violence in Caracas estimates the country sees up to 9,000 kidnappings each year. Even some security experts have had enough: "I'm getting the hell out" of Venezuela, says Marshal Valentine, a Caracas security consultant whose girlfriend was kidnapped two years ago. "She took a [bullet] in the back, then this year they tried to grab her again."

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn reversed a secret policy Wednesday that allowed more than 1,700 inmates to be released from state prison early, some of whom have already been sent back for new offenses, including aggravated battery, weapons charges and assault.

The inmates were set free after an unannounced change in prison practice — revealed in an Associated Press report earlier this month — that Quinn now calls a "big mistake." He blamed his Corrections director, Michael Randle, but did not fire him.

The AP obtained and analyzed information that showed about 850 inmates were let out weeks early beginning in September. Corrections stopped requiring them to serve at least 61 days and gave them up to six months' good-conduct credit, or "meritorious good time," immediately upon entering the lockup, before they had a chance to display any kind of behavior.

That meant they spent as little as three weeks behind bars — including county jail — and averaged 16 days in the state pen under the plan called "MGT Push." They included violent offenders who committed such crimes as battery, weapons charges and aggravated drunken driving.

"This was a big mistake and I am very disappointed that this occurred. I think it was an error in judgment," Quinn said.

The Democrat said he did not know about the practice until he read the AP account, contradicting his statement two weeks earlier that he was aware of it and that it was well-publicized.

SNIP

Quinn maintained Wednesday that he didn't know about the MGT Push program until reading the Associated Press story about it. That contradicts a statement Dec. 16 that he did know about it. Either way, it does not explain why his office defended the policy change when the AP initially asked about it.

That was hyped by Fox last month, but they ignored the papers authors own comment supporting AGW.

"Dr Knorr also says quite plainly in the interview:

"That would be a very superficial interpretation of these results. Half the CO2 we emit stays in the atmosphere and that's enough to cause global warming."

"That" is in reference to the interviewer asking if his research backs up people who deny climate change.

"Also, this research is based on the past. We are pushing the system to it's limits and it might break at some stage, as the model suggests. But is hasn't happened yet. I would not experiment with the climate system."

Instead, 37-year-old Gregory J. Oras is facing charges of misusing the 911 system and battery of a law enforcement officer.

An arrest report says Oras called 911 three times before his arrest early Tuesday in Oldsmar, northwest of Tampa. He told the dispatcher he had a broken nose and bleeding ears, and claimed people were shooting at him.

Authorities say he was actually looking for a ride to another bar.

The report also says Oras kicked a Pinellas County sheriff's deputy in the knees and a Taser was used to subdue him.

His paper suggested the carbon "sink" has not decreased it's ability to absorb about 50% of the C02, but as my other post shows, he is not a denier, just that we have not yet reached a tipping point where the earth absorbs less of the co2 increase. He said:

Fifteen years ago, Switzerland began treating heroin users by distributing heroin to them from clinics. The outcomes: no overdose deaths, new AIDS and Hepatitis infections dropped, causing Switzerland to have the lowest rates of any country in Europe, crime was cut by 60%, and new heroin users in Zurich decreased by 82%. Eight years ago, Portugal decriminalized all drugs and the possession of up to ten days supply. The results: a 25% decline in drug use among 13 to 15 year olds, a 22% decline in drug use among 16 to 18 year olds, a 52% decline in heroin overdose deaths, a 71% decline in HIV infections reported by drug users, and an overall decline in the use of every drug with the exception of marijuana. However, marijuana use in the rest of the European Union increased by four to five times what it did in Portugal.

Tavern on the Green, once America's highest-grossing restaurant, is singing its culinary swan song.

A pair of decorated wooden elks stand in a hallway as members of the waitstaff emerge from the kitchen at Tavern on the Green in New York, Tuesday Dec. 29, 2009. The restaurant is scheduled to serve its last meal on Dec. 31.

Enlarge photo Tavern on the Green taken on Feb. 13, 2006, a day after a record snowfall of 26.9 inches in Central Park that broke the previous record of 26.4 inches, set in December 1947. The former sheepfold at the edge of Central Park, now ringed by twinkling lights and fake topiary animals, is preparing for New Year's Eve, when it will serve its last meal. Just three years ago, it was plating more than 700,000 meals annually, bringing in more than $38 million. Just three years ago, it was plating more than 700,000 meals annually, bringing in more than $38 million.

But that astronomical sum wasn't enough to keep the landmark restaurant out of bankruptcy court. Its $8 million debt is to be covered at an auction of Baccarat and Waterford chandeliers, Tiffany stained glass, a mural depicting Central Park and other over-the-top decor that has bewitched visitors for decades.

Even the restaurant's name is up for grabs. At stake is whether another restaurateur taking over the 27,000 square feet of space, owned by the city, can reopen as Tavern on the Green.

For 75 years, since it first opened amid the Great Depression, the Tavern has attracted clients from around the world.

Recipes? Yes please.

1 1/2 cups whole milk
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
3/4 cup granulated sugar
4 inch piece vanilla bean , slit lengthwise and seeds removed, pod reserved (see illustration below)
4 large egg yolks

Mix milk, cream, vanilla and 1/2 cup sugar in a saucepan, heat until hot (170 degrees)

In a bowl, whisk remaining sugar and egg yolks until they are light and fluffy

Slowly ladle about half of the hot milk mixture into the yolk mixture and stir until combined

Slowly mix the yolk mixture back into the saucepan with remaining hot milk

Bring combined mixture up to 180 degrees to set eggs. DON'T boil or this will curdle. If you don't have a thermometer, cook until thick enough to coat back of spoon.

Chill mixture by setting bowl in ice bath, then transfer to fridge until it has completely chilled. Must be at least 40 degrees or below to properly set in ice cream maker. Then just use your ice cream machine!

If you don't have fresh vanilla bean, substitute 2 tsp of vanilla extract. But don't cook it, or else the flavor will be shot. Just stir it into the chilled custard right before churning.

True, the "air born fraction" has not increased, it's still 50% of what is emitted, but emissions are up, and so are C02 levels. By careful wording, you can get the impression that levels have not increased, when it's only the 1/2 fraction that has not changed.

Yes, its gross revenues were the highest for any single location restaurant in the nation, but its costs were just as high. Its operators, the LeRoy family, didn't keep the place up over the past couple of years (particularly after Ken LeRoy died) and now the City is trying to sell the license to someone else, but the current lessee is trying to block ownership of the name (which has considerable value in its own right).

Dean Poll, who operates the Boathouse and won the right to operate Tavern, has to first make a deal with the union workers at Tavern before the City can go ahead and give Poll the right to operate Tavern. The Parks Dept wont give him the contracts until the union deal is done.

Only in NY... Only in NY.

Charles look at my #557

That is an actual graph of his results from the study, how that is in any way being interpreted as "no rise in CO2 levels" is simple stupidity. It seems the deniers are just flat out making stuff up again...

More here:

Is the airborne fraction of anthropogenic CO2 emissions increasing?

The 'airborne fraction' refers to the amount of human CO2 emissions remaining in the atmosphere. Approximately 43% of our CO2 emissions stay in the atmosphere with the rest being absorbed by carbon sinks. But is the airborne fraction increasing? A paper published in November 2009 found no statistically significant trend (Knorr 2009). Anthony Watts labelled this result the "Bombshell from Bristol", a potentially devastating result for anthropogenic global warming. Was it such a shock? The 2007 IPCC verdict on the airborne fraction was "There is yet no statistically significant trend in the CO2 growth rate... since 1958. This ‘airborne fraction’ has shown little variation over this period."(IPCC AR4) I'm not sure the move from "not much happening" to "still not much happening" warrants the label "bombshell".

The airborne fraction is calculated from the rate of human CO2 emissions and changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration. The global increase in atmospheric CO2 has been directly measured since 1959 and can be calculated from ice cores for earlier periods. CO2 emissions primarily come from fossil fuel combustion with a lesser contribution from land use changes. Fossil fuel combustion is calculated from international energy statistics. CO2 emissions from land-use changes are more difficult to estimate and come with greater uncertainty. Land use emissions are estimated using deforestation and other land-use data, fire observations from space and carbon cycle modelling.
...
Knorr also finds the 150 year trend while Le Quéré looks at the last 50 years. This may be significant. If the airborne fraction is increasing, it is likely due to natural carbon sinks losing their absorption ability due to becoming saturated. Several studies have found recent drops in the uptake of CO2 by oceans (Le Quéré 2007, Schuster 2007, Park 2008). However, with such a noisy signal, this is one question that will require more data before being more fully resolved.

Lastly, some perspective. There are still areas of uncertainty associated with the carbon cycle. Because of this uncertainty, scientists are currently debating whether the airborne fraction is steady at 43% or slightly increasing from 43%. Unfortunately, some skeptics use this uncertainty to hold the position that the airborne fraction is closer to 0%.

It's a perfect example of the tactics of climate deniers, actually. They're counting on the fact that most people won't be able to understand the math behind this research, and will think that because the "airborne fraction" hasn't increased, it means that CO2 hasn't increased. They're deliberately promoting confusion by cynically playing on mathematical ignorance.

And note that many other studies disagree with this conclusion, by the way.

I think I found the source of the meme besides Watts. It's on Drudge reading like this:

'No rise' of atmospheric carbon dioxide fraction in past 160 years...

That's as far as they go. I'm pretty sure they just read "'No rise' of atmospheric carbon dioxide" and stop right there.

ABC's Inaccurate Gitmo-Abdulmutallab Story Got Major Pickup

As documented by Gawker, one of those two leaders -- IDed in the story as "Guantanamo prisoner #333, Muhamad Attik al-Harbi" -- had reportedly surrendered himself in February and ended up in the hands of Saudi authorities. This fact -- reported at the time by the AP -- means that, as ABC's correction noted last night, he "therefore could not have played a direct role in organizing the attempt to bring down Northwest flight 253."
,,,
To be perfectly clear, if ABC's new version of the report is accurate, that one of the four leaders who planned the attack was a former Gitmo detainee, that's a big story.

Drunk driving and resisting arrest. The joke at the time was that he put up more of a fight than Saddam Hussein did.

Yeesh. He certainly looked about the same.

What will you call the new year? Twenty-ten or two-thousand-ten?

I'm going to call it twenty-oh-ten. I won't be able to stop myself.

Two-thousand-ten or maybe ten. Funny, we might start saying things like, "well, back in o-nine..."

9/11 Truthers Foiled by 12/25 Attack

By Michael Shermer

re: #564 Charles

First, it isn't really "new," and second, the researcher says his claim does NOT support climate deniers: Bristol research does not support climate change denial.

Good grief who is this masked man? ///

re: #567 avanti

His paper suggested the carbon "sink" has not decreased it's ability to absorb about 50% of the C02, but as my other post shows, he is not a denier, just that we have not yet reached a tipping point where the earth absorbs less of the co2 increase. He said:

"We are pushing the system to it's limits and it might break at some stage, as the model suggests. But is hasn't happened yet. I would not experiment with the climate system."

That is sad.

Well Reine, I might not follow these theads for awhile, then again you said that Cato is inquiring about lodging in the future.

I will personally book him for a one nights stay during this Christmas season, anywhere in the world as I have stated.

Then there is my,
"Now I have to finally clean my oven Recipe";

Skinned chicken breasts (2)
Package of bacon (thick)
Cream cheese (any)
Salt
Pepper

Carefully slide your tool into the side as to create a pocket.
Try not to be so be hasty, control the stroke for it might tear the pocket.
Stick the pocket with your salt and pepper, stuff two tablespoons of cream cheese and wrap with bacon so as to maintain what is inserted inside.
Gently place your hands on the stuffed breasts and maneuver them unto an ungreased pan.
Now it is time for pop and crackle for you will broil these for ten minutes on the third level of your oven.
