May I Have Another Open Thread, Please, Sir?

Why, yes … you may!

It’s been a day of insanely uncomfortable travel, and it’s not over yet. This is being posted from my iPhone as I wait on the runway in a tiny cramped seat in a hot, stuffy plane, with a screaming baby two rows in front of me, and an overweight guy in the seat next to me who keeps nodding off and drooling on my shoulder. And it’s the last row, so the seat back doesn’t recline, but the guy in front of me has his seat all the way back, jamming my kneecaps all the way into my upper thighs. And this is after waiting an hour in a long line exposed to a frigid wind, to go through a security check by rude, irritable TSA drones.

Ain’t flyin’ fun?

Posting will probably be back to normal tomorrow, if my head doesn’t explode first.

My elder cousin works for the TSA at St.Petersburg/Clearwater airport, man does he have it made. A few domestic flights and a lot of cargo, no international flights at all, those all go through Tampa. Basically they stand around a lot while getting good wages and great benefits.

I recall being a lad about 20, hopping a flight from Athens to Tel Aviv. The guard took my duffel bag and half unzipped it and asked me "What have you got in here." (I did have a few things I hoped to slip through)

I smiled and said, "Just a bomb."

He scowled at me past his mustache for a moment, then smiled and zipped my bag back up unsearched.

Things are different now.

But many of us would rather have cheap airfare than expensive travel, even if the legroom is better. That's why we mostly don't buy first-class tickets as it is. They're just not worth it.

Whatever we do to make travel better, it won't make it "classy" unless oil prices go so high that air travel is for the few and the very few.

I flew 1st Class once. What a difference that was. You get treated like a big shot. Another time I flew on a nearly empty UAL 767 and that was kind of nice too. Haven't traveled since before 9/11.

But, it was great to have the stews tell us that they'd be up in first, no food service, come up if you want something.

Oh yeah. Walking up and down the aisles. One flight we were all in back and everyone was standing around talking, some folks stretching, people smoking. It was almost like a club scene. Could walk up to the galley and ask for things like a cup or another drink. Cockpit door wide open.

The Athens secret police were quite aggressive, no nonsense, stopped us immediately while we were in the process of collecting the drachma coins which were all but worthless anyway, grabbing the hat full of coins and our gear.

They marched us to their police station and sat us on some benches for some time while they came and went, some in uniforms some plain cloths.

I got bored after awhile so I started fooling with a deck of cards, practicing little moves and such. A few times one of the coppers came over and started to watch, and I'd promptly stop and just ignore him, being a bit pissed off at the whole thing.

Eventually they found one who spoke english a bit, and he explained all the laws we had violated and sat us in the chiefs office. Typically we just sat there in silence for a while, wondering what was next, and he had his translator cop say: "Look, we have to deport you and all, but chief wants me to tell you if you do us a show, we will consider letting you go."

So we looked at each other and decided to thrash out some of the routine in their little squad room with at least thirty of them crowded in. Strangest audience we ever had.

They loved it, big sustained applause after the final number.

The english speaking copper's mustached face was all glowing now and said in his thick accent:

"You leave the Athens secret police with a wonderful memory."

So being me, I looked at him and said:

"Ok, so can we do our show in the street now or what?"

"No, no, this is strictly prohibited without the permit, ordinance number 321 and such.

We left the next day unable to work. Athens aint what it used to be.

My question is to resolve a debate between myself and another Bible studier. Could any of us be unknowingly walking around with Nephilim DNA and not know it? I don’t think so, but my friend disagrees…she is actually convinced that physically attractive, tall, well-built, intelligent people could be descendants of Nephilim. She has even suggested that my soon-to-be husband and myself are probably descended from Nephilim! Needless to say, this really freaks me out! I don’t want to worry that I have Nephilim DNA, or that my future husband may (we are both tall and athletically built and he is a handsome and mechanically brilliant man). Please, any insight at all would be tremendously helpful. I love my Jesus with all my heart and can’t bear the thought of being separated from God in eternity due to genetic circumstances beyond my control.

I miss marching in that parade. But, at the same time, I've seen how much the parade has changed since the 60's. Route, the bands have changed the way they outfit the bands (less marchers with headsets), they let large "props" on the street (rule use to be if a single person couldn't carry it into the performing area, you couldn't have it, you were a band, not a roving theatrical show) and so on...

Times change.

We got snow too. Well, it's been there for the last two months. Hasn't actually snowed any since the day before Christmas, and none expected for tonight, which is good, because I soon as I leave work at 5:30, I have to drive to Manitou Springs to do a magic show tonight at a wonderful bed and breakfast.

Actually I haven't booked myself doing magic in years, it's something that just came up and I decided to go for it.

I flew a red eye from LA to Tampa. Window seat, fat guy next to me, dude in front of me reclined. I couldn't even reach my book bag under the seat in front of me. I saw a page with the current parade route. I noticed they don't go beyond the city hall area. The best part of the parade for me was going on past city hall and up Broad Street to the veterans hospital where we would do our routine for the last time for the patients.

Is the hospital gone or something, or why do they stop short of it now? Do you know?

The veterans hospital was north on Broad Street, the parade route use to wrap around city hall and continue up Broad Street. The hospital was 10 or so blocks up from City Hall.

The judging and TV coverage area area us to be right there at City Hall.

Somali tried to board plane with chemicals, syringe

A man tried to board a commercial airliner in the Somali capital of Mogadishu last month with chemicals that authorities believe could have been used as an explosive device, an African Union official said Wednesday.

The suspect, Abdi Hassan Abdi, tried to board a Daallo Airlines flight with a plastic bag containing 600 grams of ammonium nitrate and half a liter of concentrated sulfuric acid in a plastic bottle, according to Wafula Waminyinyi, the deputy special representative for the African Union Mission for Somalia.

Waminyinyi said that Abdi also had approximately 5 milliliters of an unidentified liquid in a syringe that he tried to carry on board the flight, which was bound first for the northern Somali city of Hargeisa, then Djibouti, and then Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. He said that the African Union believes the chemicals could have caused an explosion.

The details bear resemblance to those from the Christmas Day attempt to blow up a Northwest flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Detroit, Michigan.

Disturbing.

Yep, we sealed the deal legally last week!

This hasn't been a honeymoon though-- that's in the spring, we hope. We've been putting together stuff for the visa application process-- lots of legal crap to do.

On the plus side, yesterday we had our own private 'wedding'-- just the two of us and the vows we'd written.
Sadly, Jimmah flies back to Scotland tonight and we have to wait for the spousal visa for me to come through. :(

For those in New York, the drain awaits. The state is out of money, and has more than a billion dollars in obligations coming due in the next few weeks with no money to cover for it.

And why is the state in this mess? Let me count the ways. How about putting forth a state budget that was $10.3 billion larger than last year despite a recession and Wall Street taking it on the chin (which is the single largest contributor to the state revenues). They increased spending by 8.3%, and now wonder why the state faces nothing but red ink as far as the eye can see?

Blame rests on Gov. Paterson for proposing a budget larger than last year, but special blame rests on the legislature, who saw Paterson's budget and demanded even more spending. They pushed billions in extra spending that the state had no money to cover, and now the state faces fiscal ruin.

Yeah, and apparently it's also affecting NJ as AC casino revenues are down significantly, which is due to a combination of factors including higher taxes and fees, competition from NY, CT, and PA casinos/racinos/VLTs, and that AC isn't an international or national destination the way Vegas is despite the fact that it could be if the locals and state deemed it a priority.

I knew it was BS when I got an email from a friend in Australia that morning, "Y2K is here, and everything still works!"

I did work on some very non-Y2K compliant software back in the '80's but have to assume it was upgraded, since Wyandotte is not a smoking crater.

The absence of a zero year in or calendar system is a gigantic, annoying pain in the ass for those of us who have had to write calendrical software spanning what ought to be a mathematically smooth transition, but instead becomes a discontinuity.

Personally, I like to keep years that start with a particular decadic number together. This involves beginning the count with zero, but that's considered completely sensible, especially in computer circles. The downside is that the "first" decades AD and BC each only have nine years in them, but my attitude toward that is "tough." 'Cause in real life, it just doesn't matter, but when I refer to "the Twenties," in mean everything including the year 1920 (or 2020, when that occurs), not 1921 through 1930.

I'll defer discussion of the anomaly introduced by the switch from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in October 1582 (which can be seen here if you select that month) with it's discarding of the fifth through the fourteenth of the month for another time.

I think most of us do, including myself, and I doubt that will ever change. Most everyone celebrated the millennium in 2000, and arguing over technicalities is pointless.

LOL - I'm so oblivious. The title of the article is "Captain Underpants and the Illusion of Security," so that would be a yes.

My friend works at a hospital and I went to see him a few months back. The security guard stopped me and said I had to sign in. I asked him if he needed to see my I.D. and he said no. So, I could have signed in as Slappy McDuck and it would not have mattered.

I felt compelled to ask the guy what this accomplished. How would this stop me from blowing up the hospital or attacking someone? If I blew up the hospital, would it help the cops to know that they should be looking for Slappy McDuck? I didn't ask, of course, because it would probably just get me in trouble and interfere with me seeing my friend.

Illusion of security is right.

When I was in college there was a hospital across the street from our campus. The student lounge (where all the vending machines were) closed at 10 pm, so often someone would walk across the street, through the ER entrance, down a couple of hallways to their 24 hour snack bar and get some food.

Then one day a patient was raped, and the perp came in the ER door. So security was enhanced. After that, the guard would ask what we were doing there, and "We're from the college hoping to go to the snack bar." was an acceptable answer.

Sweetie and I are going to a big rowdy party tonight that will probably turn into an all-nighter. After that, we're going to crash for the rest of the weekend and do absolutely nothing.

The holidays have been great this year, but we're both ready for some serious downtime.

Short answer: Nothing.

Longer answer: Nothing at all. I hate New Year's. It's a pointless, depressing social holiday that I've never once been able to participate in, for numerous reasons (usually financial).

I'm probably going to screw around on the internet until 10 or so and then go to bed.

My brother-in-law and I both go to the Chathamn joint on our birthdays, it's on Mulberry St just southwest of the town square.
In Spfd, have you tried Saputo's at 7th and Monroe? They're known for their lasagna, but their pizza is very good, imho.
Would not hurt to also try Joe's Pizza on W Jefferson St or The Pizzeria at 15th and Ash or Lake Pointe Grill on Toronto Rd...

Observation for the morning... approximately 90% of the people in the DC Metro area do not know that a big red hand on a crosswalk sign means "don't walk", but they do understand when I yell out the window of my car, "I have no problems running you over if you cross against the light."

Me too. Going out to the bars is just an invitation to get gouged. You go to a bar that never charges a cover and always has $4 beer on tap, and suddenly you are charged $25 to get in and the beer is $6. All so we can count from 10 to 1.

I know what you mean. I saw a guy almost get hit by a cab (who had the right of way) and yell at the driver right by Union Station. I told the guy the cab driver had right of way and he said something like "No, pedestrians always do, bro!" A guy walking near me said to me "Wait til he gets his ass run over!"

The Conspiracy deepens!

Nice catch by Andrea Nill — Queen’s Medical Center, where Rush Limbaugh is being treated after experiencing chest pains yesterday, happens to be a crucial location in the birther mythos. A UPI article mistakenly identified that hospital, not the Kapi’olani Medical Center, as the birthplace of Barack Obama. And even though the article was corrected, the “no one can say where Obama was born” myth has persisted.

This is an outrageous outrage that surely means something about something to someone - if it didn't it wouldn't be so outrageous!

Unfortunately I don't think my chocolate dipped cookies set up too well. I attempted to temper the chocolate, but I don't think I was successful. Think I heated it back up too much after dropping it down to 80 degrees. Anyone here have any chocolatier wisdom to share?

Yeah, I'm not really a low-cal sort of guy. I was actually going to do a duck confit ravioli instead of the mascarpone/goat cheese, but it didn't work out. Couldn't find fresh duck legs anywhere, and I just didn't have the time to confit them either. Next year I suppose...

We're only as safe as the least secure facilities... so despite upgraded security in some European cities, airport security remains a joke - as does homeland security in general...

And the Republicans are screaming that full body scans for everyone is an invasion of privacy while the left is saying it is the only thing we can do and both are missing the point. Technology will not stop these guys. We need to profile (based on a host of factors) and get our intelligence together ASAP. Reliance on technology and process will only result in failure.

Hopping John.

1 large onion, chopped
2-3 cloves of garlic, minced
2 or so Tbs. butter
2-16 oz. cans of black-eyed peas, rinsed and drained
2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
1 C. uncooked regular rice
1 tsp. salt
1/2-1 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes

Saute onion and garlic in butter until the former is tender.
Stir in peas, broth, rice, salt and 1/2 tsp. pepper flakes.
Bring it to a boil then cover and simmer for 20 minutes or until liquid is absorbed and rice is tender. Serve with extra red pepper if desired.

They are cookies that have a cake like consistency. I first had them in Paris (at Fauchon), and Mrs. Lawhawk started making them when we got back. They're light and fluffy and quite tasty.

Serve with a pork loin roast rubbed with this.

1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. fennel seed, crushed
1/2 tsp. thyme
2 tsp. black pepper
1 Tbs. paprika
1/2 tsp. oregano
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper (optional if you don't like hot stuff)
1/2 tsp. salt

Mix it all together. Wash and dry your pork and then lightly oil it. Sprinkle 1-2 Tbs. of mixture onto it and let it stand in the fridge for at least an hour.

You can also use this on beef roasts.

Not only did they turn out for barely-organized protests around the country in April and July, they showed up at rallies at ad-hoc events, and they flooded town-hall meetings. Their advent frightened the powerful so much that some refused to show their faces in public (Uh, maybe that was because of the death threats - ed) in a season when fund-raising and handshaking are as traditional as pennant races in baseball.

My brother has been making ravioli for the last few holidays. He took a combo of raviolis to a Thanksgiving dinner (pumpkin, wild mushroom, and cheese). For Christmas he made crab ravioli.

The latter was interesting since crab has such a delicate flavor. Mascapone doesn't have too much flavor so it works as a filler with the crab. Spicing has to be pretty delicate. I think we settled on a bit of white pepper and a little bit of lemon juice. Worked out pretty well with a spicy red sauce - though my sister-in-law didn't like it.

I think this weekend is going to be some serious cooking. Got a food processor for a present, so I'm more willing to try some recipes that were a lot of work when I just had access to a blender, hand electric mixer, or hand-chopping everything.

A gunman clad in black went on a shooting rampage Thursday, killing his ex-girlfriend then slaying four workers at a suburban shopping mall near Helsinki before turning his gun on himself, police said.

Finnish police said one woman and three men were shot dead Thursday morning at the Sello shopping mall in Espoo, six miles (10 kilometers) west of Helsinki. All four were mall employees.

The gunman was identified as 43-year-old Ibrahim Shkupolli, an immigrant who had been living for several years in Finland, police superintendent Jukka Kaski said at a news conference.

Shkupolli killed his ex-girlfriend in a nearby apartment with an unlicensed handgun before heading to the mall, Kaski said.

The ex-girlfriend, a Finnish woman born in 1967, also worked at the mall and had taken out a restraining order against Shkupolli, Kaski said. He refused to speculate if the four workers had been targeted by the shooter.

You'll find that a stand mixer will make all of your baking vastly better. I got the Mrs. a Kitchen Aid a few years back, and she had an older mixer that didn't work too well or a hand mixer, and never could get the creaming just right.

Now, it's spot on every time, and that improves the texture of the cakes and cookies.

The same goes for whipping egg whites.

I have the food mill/meat grinder attachment, as well as the pasta roller, linguini cutter and spaghetti cutter.

Haven't used the grinder for anything except meat, but it works pretty great. You haven't had a great hamburger until you've had one that you grind up fresh and hand-form yourself immediately before it hits the griddle.

The pasta roller is highly recommended as well, along with the spaghetti and linguini cutters. I have heard that the ravioli stuffer attachment is terrible, but I don't have that one. Frankly I'm not sure why you need a ravioli stuffing machine to begin with, it's pretty fast to do by hand.

With the heavier duty machine I think I'm going to dig up a few older recipes. I have a potato-carrot kugel recipe that might be worth a shot. Doing that with a blender to break down the carrots and potatoes took a ton of prep time the last time I took a shot at it.

The Nigerian suspected in the attempted attack on a U.S. airliner had stayed on in Yemen illegally after his visa expired three months ago and should have been stopped by authorities from leaving the country, Yemeni security officials said Thursday.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab spent time in Yemen on two occasions before the attempted Christmas Day attack on a Detroit-bound Northwest Airlines flight.

Yemeni officials said Abdulmutallab's student visa for Yemen, where he studied Arabic at a local language institute, was valid from Aug. 4 to Sept. 21.

After his visa expired, the 23-year-old stayed on in Yemen until the first week in December, they said, but his whereabouts in the country is unknown.

Pesto is a classic dish that becomes almost stupidly simple when you have a food processor. Apparently making pasta dough using the processor is all of the rage these days as well. Even Lidia Bastianich exclusively features food-processor based pasta dough recipes in her cookbooks now. Call me a traditionalist (or someone without a food processor) but I never really found making it by hand using the well technique to be too hard.

I use the basic Mario Batali recipe, adjusted for measurement by weight instead of volume. I simply use 3 oz of all-purpose flour for every large egg, and that's it. Just form the flour into a nest shape, crack your eggs into the middle, and then slowly start expanding your well outwards, incorporating the walls of your nest into the egg as you go. Once it turns into a shaggy dough, just knead the hell out of it for approx. 10 minutes until it's springy and tender. Throw it in a ziploc bag, rest for 30 minutes and then roll out using your pasta machine.

If the US adopted the Norwegian antibiotic use standards, we could reduce MRSA deaths significantly (saving 19,000 lives a year), and $6 billion in direct health care costs. We'd save even more in reduced spending on antibiotics in general.

If anybody had Jesus' birth certificate, I'm damn sure it doesn't say 0 or 1. Come to think of it, how do we really know what year it is anyway? On the Jewish calender, it's year 5800-ish. But how do you know that somewhere over the millenia somebody didn't lose count? Now, I know it's 2009 because my clock on the computer says so. I think the New Year's resolution is going to be a pantry cleaning and general re-arrangement of the kitchen. From there I'll see how well I can find and incorporate more fresh produce and full-scale home-cooking into my diet. Cooking for one is sometimes a real pain since most recipes are scaled for 4+ people.

And it's hard to host co-workers and friends for dinner since most of them do not live nearby. Co-workers commute much further than I do, and I travel out to the suburbs for a lot of my social interactions.

Oh! I completely forgot to mention the ice cream maker attachment. Oh my god, it is probably my favorite attachment of them all. Makes the most unbelievably smooth and delicious ice cream you have ever had in your life. I can provide recipes if you wish.

The main key I have discovered is that the temperature of your mixture is of extreme importance. If you are making French ice cream which contains eggs and is cooked to 180 degrees to set the custard, you must make sure to cool it down before mixing. At least to 40 degrees, and even lower if possible. The colder your mix, the faster it will freeze when mixing, creating smaller ice crystals and a smoother texture.

The other amazing thing you can make is fresh sherbet. Not the neon colored supermarket goo, something completely different and unbelievable. Basically you take a slightly sweetened fruit juice mixture, and then lightly fold that into an equal amount of fresh whipped cream. Then take that mixture and pour directly into the ice cream machine. It freezes up so light you wouldn't believe. It almost floats off your spoon. And if you use fresh squeezed juice, wow.

Yeah I like his cooking advice alot. Love that it's based in scientific fundamentals so you learn the why behind the hows. He can be kind of annoying, but I guess that's the price you pay. I also really enjoy Cook's Illustrated magazine, they take the same approach as he does to all their recipes. You can buy an online subscription to their website for less than $40 a year, and it gives you full access to their complete archives. Recipes, product reviews, taste tests of store brands, and technique tips. Highly, highly recommended.

Basil does pretty well indoors. I grow mine hydroponically and I make fresh pesto about every 4-6 weeks. Even in January!

I brought a batch into my office and my coworkers continually hound me to bring in more. I had no idea that sherbet could be anything besides the slime-green goop that comes in the huge supermarket pail. Tonight I'm making a version that I created using cantaloupe instead of orange. I just dice the melon and then blend it up until smooth, then incorporate just like the orange juice.

I have their revised America's Best Recipes cookbook that was published in the last year or so. Monster tome, but fantastic information with their recipes. Not only do they give the recipe, but often it's a 1-2 page essay explaining what they are trying to get in terms of results and the experimentation with preparation and cooking that led up to the final recipe.

So I had a cookbook as bedtime reading for a week or two. And most of the recipes I've tried have been excellent - even when I tweak ingredients depending on what I have on hand.

December is usually a festive month in Caracas. But this year, beneath the Christmas tree at a private school in the affluent Caracas neighborhood of Los Palos Grandes, the topic among parents is dread. December is probably the worst month for kidnapping in Venezuela, and a 10-year-old Palos Grandes girl was recently snatched from her chauffeur-driven car and held for 10 hours until her family paid a ransom of more than $25 million. "Very few people I know have not been in a robbery or kidnap situation," says one Venezuelan businessman as he and the other parents greet two security experts the school has invited to counsel them. "Even my own mother was victim of a kidnapping."

As part of their presentation, David Rappe and Andy Chelini of the security firm Beyond Risk play excerpts from Secuestro Express (Kidnap Express), a 2005 film about a Caracas couple's abduction that has since become the highest grossing film in Venezuelan history. The movie is an effective teaching tool, the men say, because its story breaks a kidnapping down into its several stages. They also play a real recording of a frightening exchange between a kidnapper and a negotiator. "They are going to come at you with the threat of violence and death," Rappe warns his audience. But he points out that 98% of abductions result in a release, and most deaths usually result from pre-existing medical conditions. (See why Colombians are leaving their country for Venezuela.)

Sessions like these are becoming increasingly common in Venezuela, which now has the western hemisphere's highest kidnapping rate to add to its exploding violent-crime epidemic. (Caracas suffers some 40 murders each weekend.) There are as many as five abductions each day in the capital alone - and an estimated 4 out of 10 kidnapping cases across the country are never reported because, as in so many other Latin American countries, locals fear their corrupt police forces themselves are often involved in the crimes. Sources inside Venezuela's federal crime-investigation agency, known as the CICPC, concede that police have been involved in kidnappings, adding that even two officers from the CICPC's anti-extortion and -kidnapping unit are under investigation.

A recent survey by the independent Venezuelan Observatory of Violence in Caracas estimates the country sees up to 9,000 kidnappings each year. Even some security experts have had enough: "I'm getting the hell out" of Venezuela, says Marshal Valentine, a Caracas security consultant whose girlfriend was kidnapped two years ago. "She took a [bullet] in the back, then this year they tried to grab her again."

I'm not much of a cook. I do like it, and think I'm quite good when I do! But I'm lazy. More than 3 ingredients, I've lost interest. It's terrible really.

My father was a better cook than my mother, but we never knew until he started a restaurant in mid-life. My poor mother hated cooking, which I also never realized until she told me. Then it was a like a lightblub! So that's why she potted everything!

Of all the delicious things my dad made, his baked mac and cheese was always my fav, 5 cheeses, heavy cream, oh my.

My sis-in-law would like Cook's Illustrated tho.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn reversed a secret policy Wednesday that allowed more than 1,700 inmates to be released from state prison early, some of whom have already been sent back for new offenses, including aggravated battery, weapons charges and assault.

The inmates were set free after an unannounced change in prison practice — revealed in an Associated Press report earlier this month — that Quinn now calls a "big mistake." He blamed his Corrections director, Michael Randle, but did not fire him.

The AP obtained and analyzed information that showed about 850 inmates were let out weeks early beginning in September. Corrections stopped requiring them to serve at least 61 days and gave them up to six months' good-conduct credit, or "meritorious good time," immediately upon entering the lockup, before they had a chance to display any kind of behavior.

That meant they spent as little as three weeks behind bars — including county jail — and averaged 16 days in the state pen under the plan called "MGT Push." They included violent offenders who committed such crimes as battery, weapons charges and aggravated drunken driving.

"This was a big mistake and I am very disappointed that this occurred. I think it was an error in judgment," Quinn said.

The Democrat said he did not know about the practice until he read the AP account, contradicting his statement two weeks earlier that he was aware of it and that it was well-publicized.

"Dr Knorr also says quite plainly in the interview:

"That would be a very superficial interpretation of these results. Half the CO2 we emit stays in the atmosphere and that's enough to cause global warming."

"That" is in reference to the interviewer asking if his research backs up people who deny climate change.

An arrest report says Oras called 911 three times before his arrest early Tuesday in Oldsmar, northwest of Tampa. He told the dispatcher he had a broken nose and bleeding ears, and claimed people were shooting at him.

Authorities say he was actually looking for a ride to another bar.

The report also says Oras kicked a Pinellas County sheriff's deputy in the knees and a Taser was used to subdue him.

His paper suggested the carbon "sink" has not decreased it's ability to absorb about 50% of the C02, but as my other post shows, he is not a denier, just that we have not yet reached a tipping point where the earth absorbs less of the co2 increase. He said:

Recipes? Yes please.

1 1/2 cups whole milk
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
3/4 cup granulated sugar
4 inch piece vanilla bean , slit lengthwise and seeds removed, pod reserved (see illustration below)
4 large egg yolks

Mix milk, cream, vanilla and 1/2 cup sugar in a saucepan, heat until hot (170 degrees)

In a bowl, whisk remaining sugar and egg yolks until they are light and fluffy

Slowly ladle about half of the hot milk mixture into the yolk mixture and stir until combined

Slowly mix the yolk mixture back into the saucepan with remaining hot milk

Bring combined mixture up to 180 degrees to set eggs. DON'T boil or this will curdle. If you don't have a thermometer, cook until thick enough to coat back of spoon.

Chill mixture by setting bowl in ice bath, then transfer to fridge until it has completely chilled. Must be at least 40 degrees or below to properly set in ice cream maker. Then just use your ice cream machine!

If you don't have fresh vanilla bean, substitute 2 tsp of vanilla extract. But don't cook it, or else the flavor will be shot. Just stir it into the chilled custard right before churning.

In contradiction to some recent studies, he finds that the airborne fraction of carbon dioxide has not increased either during the past 150 years or during the most recent five decades.

If you want to make chocolate instead of vanilla, simply follow the same recipe. Just omit the vanilla, and include 8 oz of bittersweet chocolate. Simply melt it in the microwave and then mix into the custard along with the sugar and milk/cream.

Oh, and make sure to STRAIN the mixture after cooking and before chilling. Accidentally left that part out of the above!

True, the "air born fraction" has not increased, it's still 50% of what is emitted, but emissions are up, and so are C02 levels. By careful wording, you can get the impression that levels have not increased, when it's only the 1/2 fraction that has not changed.

Yes, its gross revenues were the highest for any single location restaurant in the nation, but its costs were just as high. Its operators, the LeRoy family, didn't keep the place up over the past couple of years (particularly after Ken LeRoy died) and now the City is trying to sell the license to someone else, but the current lessee is trying to block ownership of the name (which has considerable value in its own right).

Dean Poll, who operates the Boathouse and won the right to operate Tavern, has to first make a deal with the union workers at Tavern before the City can go ahead and give Poll the right to operate Tavern. The Parks Dept wont give him the contracts until the union deal is done.

Is the airborne fraction of anthropogenic CO2 emissions increasing?

The 'airborne fraction' refers to the amount of human CO2 emissions remaining in the atmosphere. Approximately 43% of our CO2 emissions stay in the atmosphere with the rest being absorbed by carbon sinks. But is the airborne fraction increasing? A paper published in November 2009 found no statistically significant trend (Knorr 2009). Anthony Watts labelled this result the "Bombshell from Bristol", a potentially devastating result for anthropogenic global warming. Was it such a shock? The 2007 IPCC verdict on the airborne fraction was "There is yet no statistically significant trend in the CO2 growth rate... since 1958. This ‘airborne fraction’ has shown little variation over this period."(IPCC AR4) I'm not sure the move from "not much happening" to "still not much happening" warrants the label "bombshell".

The airborne fraction is calculated from the rate of human CO2 emissions and changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration. The global increase in atmospheric CO2 has been directly measured since 1959 and can be calculated from ice cores for earlier periods. CO2 emissions primarily come from fossil fuel combustion with a lesser contribution from land use changes. Fossil fuel combustion is calculated from international energy statistics. CO2 emissions from land-use changes are more difficult to estimate and come with greater uncertainty. Land use emissions are estimated using deforestation and other land-use data, fire observations from space and carbon cycle modelling.

Knorr also finds the 150 year trend while Le Quéré looks at the last 50 years. This may be significant. If the airborne fraction is increasing, it is likely due to natural carbon sinks losing their absorption ability due to becoming saturated. Several studies have found recent drops in the uptake of CO2 by oceans (Le Quéré 2007, Schuster 2007, Park 2008). However, with such a noisy signal, this is one question that will require more data before being more fully resolved.

Lastly, some perspective. There are still areas of uncertainty associated with the carbon cycle. Because of this uncertainty, scientists are currently debating whether the airborne fraction is steady at 43% or slightly increasing from 43%. Unfortunately, some skeptics use this uncertainty to hold the position that the airborne fraction is closer to 0%.

It's a perfect example of the tactics of climate deniers, actually. They're counting on the fact that most people won't be able to understand the math behind this research, and will think that because the "airborne fraction" hasn't increased, it means that CO2 hasn't increased. They're deliberately promoting confusion by cynically playing on mathematical ignorance.

And note that many other studies disagree with this conclusion, by the way.

Well Reine, I might not follow these theads for awhile, then again you said that Cato is inquiring about lodging in the future.

I will personally book him for a one nights stay during this Christmas season, anywhere in the world as I have stated.

"Now I have to finally clean my oven Recipe";

Skinned chicken breasts (2)
Package of bacon (thick)
Cream cheese (any)
Salt
Pepper

Carefully slide your tool into the side as to create a pocket.
Try not to be so be hasty, control the stroke for it might tear the pocket.
Stick the pocket with your salt and pepper, stuff two tablespoons of cream cheese and wrap with bacon so as to maintain what is inserted inside.
Gently place your hands on the stuffed breasts and maneuver them unto an ungreased pan.
Now it is time for pop and crackle for you will broil these for ten minutes on the third level of your oven.
