Sunday Night Music: Randy Newman, ‘God’s Song (That’s Why I Love Mankind)’

There’s a great version of this cynically on-target song on The Randy Newman Songbook, Vol. 1. (Here it is at the iTunes Store.)

Cain slew Abel, Seth knew not why
If the children of Israel were supposed to multiply
Then why must any of the children die?
So he asked the Lord
And the Lord said:

“Man means nothing, he means less to me
than the lowliest cactus flower
or the humblest yucca tree
he chases round this desert
cause he thinks that’s where I’ll be
that’s why I love mankind

I recoil in horror from the foulness of thee
from the squalor and the filth and the misery
How we laugh up here in heaven at the prayers you offer me
That’s why I love mankind”

The Christians and the Jews were having a jamboree
The Buddhists and the Hindus joined on satellite TV
They picked their four greatest priests
And they began to speak
They said “Lord the plague is on the world
Lord no man is free
The temples that we built to you
Have tumbled into the sea
Lord, if you won’t take care of us
Won’t you please please let us be?”

And the Lord said
And the Lord said

“I burn down your cities — how blind you must be
I take from you your children and you say how blessed are we
You all must be crazy to put your faith in me
That’s why I love mankind
You really need me
That’s why I love mankind”

The cynical ones among us might point out that George Harrison blatantly ripped off "He's So Fine" by the Chiffons for that song, and pretty much got away with it.

This was the first song I ever heard by Randy Newman from the Sail Away album, 1972. The lyric was hard to forget.

He whips out a really long sword that will scare the heck out of Sauron.

The Romans often dealt with Celts armed with long swords and were able to deal with them. They would disable the Celt's shield with their javelins called Pila and then get in close where a long sword could not be used effectively and stap with their much-shorter gladius. Skill and tactics count for much more than the size of one's sword.

18 Charles Johnson  Sun, Jan 3, 2010 6:49:36pm

Randy Newman grew up in Louisiana, by the way.

George Harrison's uncredited remake of "He's So Fine" was one of the most blatant rip-offs that ever took place in the music industry. It was very nearly note-for-note.

I often wondered how he managed to look himself in the mirror after that one.

I'm prepared to be pummelled for this, but I would much rather read Randy Newman's lyrics than listen to him. Not sure if it's his voice or how everything sounds pretty much the same. I admit, due to this feeling, I haven't listened to a ton of his stuff. I get the sense he considered a virtuoso, which makes me feel clueless in addition to indifferent.

File the following under "the stoopid - it burns":

The Orange County Register, the voice of the RR in southern California, has an editorial (under their pen) Editorial: Time to re-examine that 'settled' science which includes:

...

A University of Bristol, England, study last week concluded that, contrary to IPCC assumptions, CO2 emissions haven't risen the past 150 years or even most recent five decades, directly contradicting the basic assumption of global warming zealots.

...

The supposed study said no such thing, of course.

Truth - it's optional in Deniersville.

* Disease: Germs, or witchcraft?
* Staying on the ground: Gravity, or intelligent falling?
* Alchemy: Worth a second look?
* F = ma: Not so fast!
* Identifying witches: How buoyancy in ducks, very small rocks, and bits of wood reveal Satan's succubi.

AIDS Activists worried

The Obama administration spent most of the last year following the Bush script on fighting AIDS around the world. But now there's talk of retooling the AIDS strategy, linking it to other international health programs and emphasizing prevention instead of treatment. And that has AIDS activists worried.

75 Ms. MacIceweasel  Mon, Jan 4, 2010 12:41:15am

Had to log back in to say I loved those lyrics. Extremely dark, but I love dark.

For some reason it immediately makes me think of this Wilfred Owen poem from WWI: The Parable of the Old Man and the Young:

So Abram rose, and clave the wood, and went,
And took the fire with him, and a knife.
And as they sojourned both of them together,
Isaac the first-born spake and said, My Father,
Behold the preparations, fire and iron,
But where the lamb for this burnt-offering?
Then Abram bound the youth with belts and straps,
And builded parapets and trenches there,
And stretched forth the knife to slay his son.
When lo! an angel called him out of heaven,
Saying, Lay not thy hand upon the lad,
Neither do anything to him. Behold,
A ram, caught in a thicket by its horns;
Offer the Ram of Pride instead of him.

But the old man would not so, but slew his son,
And half the seed of Europe, one by one.

-- Wilfred Owen (1893 - 1918)
