There's no telling exactly how far Beck will stoop. Same goes for the GOP. I have little doubt if Repuclicans got control of congress a special prosecutor would the their first action.

Beck needs to prove he's not a serial drunk driver who routinely mows down women and children, and until he proves this by producing a certificate verifying he has never mowed women and children down, well, I'm assuming the worst.

I hope one or two of them gets past and that Beck tears a stripe off of them. I don't like Glen Beck, but if he were to denounce the Nirthers for the nuts that they are, he would actually do the conservative cause a service for a change.

Downding also. That's just not funny. Alcoholism is a serious matter and I'm glad that Glen Beck was able to conquer his addiction. I don't like his show, but I don't like to see people suffer either.

From the comments:

My husband wrote his first book, which was published on March 28, 2009, and somewhere in it he talks about BHO’s citizenship issue and that he’s not eligible to be POTUS. Well, since we are from Arkansas and thought Huckabee would be just jumping over backwards to get my husband on his Fox News Channel show, he sent both Huckabee and Huckabee’s contact person he was working with a free copy of his book for review. We waited and waited and waited and didn’t hear any word, so my husband e-mailed his contact and he said that Huckabee won’t have you on his show because, you guessed it, your book mentions the elligibility issue with BHO.

My husband also tried to send Glenn Beck a book. He e-mailed Glenn’s assistant, Pat, and asked if he could send him a book? Again, he never heard back from Pat and my husband kept sending him e-mails (4 in all) and finally this Pat e-mailed my husband back with a reply. He was rude and condescending….he said that Glenn gets hundreds of requests like this on a weekly basis and no matter if you send 100 e-mails we still won’t read your book. We thought that because his book is about Conservatives that surely they’d be wanting to have my husband on the show…..but noooooo!

Lady, I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that the book that your husband wrote and that no one wanted to touch had WAY more problems with it than just the nirther shit.

This punchy term nicely captures the way that rightwing argumentation has become gradually detached from independently recognized reality and into a state of total unselfawareness.

Thanks to the magic of talk radio and the internet, these guys can talk to no-one but each other for extremely long stretches of time, so they have no idea how crazy they sound. 68 Our Precious Bodily Fluids  Sun, Jan 3, 2010 8:15:35pm

It reminds me of the immediate aftermath of the 2008 election. There were people who insisted and apparently believed that the reason John McCain lost was that he wasn't conservative (read: bastshit insane) enough.

The "logic" was:

1. The majority of the electorate want a President who is Very Conservative.
2. John McCain is only Moderately Conservative.
3. Therefore, in their outrage, the electorate voted en masse for the candidate who was Not Very Conservative At All.

His own supporters booed him during his exceptionally classy concession speech.

Personally, I would have been happy to have John McCain as President. I liked a lot of the ideas I'd heard him advocate over the years. While I thought he had some flaws, I thought he was more honest than dishonest.

But I saw the Sarah Palin pick as an extremely obvious and cynical bit of pandering to the "base". I was really disappointed. My immediate, knee-jerk reaction was that he had decided he didn't really want to be President after all, and nominating her as VP was the only way he could avoid the job without pulling out after he'd won the nomination. Crazy, I know, but I just couldn't wrap my mind around how anyone could seriously put her forth as viable Presidential material.

Next thing I knew, the entire election was all about her dumb ass, and Bob's your uncle. Ever since then, I've been alternately befuddled, amused, shocked, and amazed that Sarah Palin gained a fan base.

I suppose I shouldn't be, because we invented the phrase "personality cult" for a reason, but that's rather politically incorrect, isn't it?

I'm sure there's plenty of money around. It'll turn up just when they need it.

The money that's around is in the hands of tea party and special interest groups, they don't get that money without bending over. The people who would normally be giving right now (like me) have been repelled, and those special interest groups don't have enough money to make up for the shortfall from the average Joe republican. Meanwhile, none of the incumbents are out fundraising, I think out of fear of the Tea party crowd.
So the Texas machine is still in control .... (same people who gave us Bush and the Schiavo flap are the ones behind the tea parties. Their "rebranding" doesn't fool me.)

If you like Plan 9, allow me to heartily recommend these:

* Dementia 13 - notable for being Francis Ford Coppola's first 'mainstream' film. It's low-budget and cheap, but not too bad, actually. The acting is good, and overall it's somewhat better than you'd expect.

* Carnival of Souls - Pretty short, and was probably made on a budget of about $87. It somehow manages to be really atmospheric, and makes an excellent Halloween movie.

* 'X' - The Man With The X-Ray Eyes - I'll just let the original 1963 trailer speak for itself. You must see it.

Money Quote is this essentially conservative point:

That mature attitude seems to have largely vanished. Now we seem to expect perfection from government and then throw temper tantrums when it is not achieved. We seem to be in the position of young adolescents — who believe mommy and daddy can take care of everything, and then grow angry and cynical when it becomes clear they can’t.

It reminds me of what Clint Eastwood said about the decline of maturity.

This, unfortunately, is very true.
Even so, the main strength of this blog (for me) is that it's the only place I know of where you get a genuinely broad spectrum of political opinion and debate. And using the word conservative as synonymous with wingnut offends sane conservatives, and independents with conservative leanings, and it would be terrible if they left here, or didn't want to comment here. Or never registered here.

i took a lot of shit when i got here for using the word wingnut, and I had to explain over and over that it's a contraction of 'rightwing nut', or at least that's how I use it. But the point of me using the word was to make clear I'm only talking about, well, wingnuts.

The conservatives here agree with nonconservatives about who falls into the category of wingnut, for the most part. That's another reason why it isn't fair to them to use the word that way.

My two cents.

How the heck does a liberal part fill that vacuum in? Two lefts do not make a right. Let alone a proper right.

The American political spectrum is calibrated right-of-center (e.g. on health-care reform), so your statement works vice versa.

I think it's time for a new liberal party to fill the "balance" gap left by the GOP, and move America toward the 'proper' center. Unfortunately, all the Greens could come up with was Cynthia McKinney.

Confusing really. I remember many years ago being interested in the Green Party. It was largely about environmentalism and progressive ideas. I would have never guessed back then that someone as off the wall as Cynthia McKinney would be involved with that party.

Yes, definitely-- and not so old attitudes. Look at the BUP!
Semi-OT: To apply for UK citizenship you have to study for a test called "life in the uk". You study from a specific book for it. You'd expect it to have useful and important citizenship information, the sorts of things you need to know to become an American citizen, and it does.

But it also includes (in the book, not the practice test) many crazy questions about "UK culture" that they expect you to be familiar with. I don't think you need to know those sorts of things to be a good citizen. My guess is that groups like the BUP want to see more of those sorts of questions on the test.

Compare a sample US citizenship test here-- it's almost entirely focused on history and knowing the government structure. You won't see a question like "Where is the Cajun or Creole dialect spoken?" (Whereas the UK asks you, "Where are the Geordie and Scouse dialects spoken?--regardless of what part of the UK you'll be living in.

When I'm back in Scotland I'll post some of the crazier questions from the UK book. I think it can reallybe seen from the difference how much more welcoming and accepting the US is of diversity.

See you later!

Seems that the British just can't get over the Iraq War:

Sir John Major criticises Tony Blair over Iraq war

I used to respect John Major a bit, but not after this. The fact is that "Saddam was a bad man" is an entirely valid argument to get rid of him. I don't buy the argument that it isn't enough of an argument to get rid of a despotic, tyrannical, evil and sadistic son of a bitch. I wish the world actually took that argument more seriously. Then we'd have less Darfurs and Rwandas and a bit more stability, quite honestly.

Also, anyone who describes Saddam as simply "a bad man" really needs to start learning a bit more euphemisms from the OED. That's akin to calling Kim Jong Il "a terrible chap".

When a leader of a nation falls into the sadistic bloodletting rituals and tortures and murder of hundreds of thousands of people, "a bad man" doesn't cut it as a description.

... which means that all of those who believe we are in a 10 year cooling spell are in for a bit of a surprise (if they are paying attention).

All through 2009 the global temperature anomaly has been going up, and when the Dec numbers come in likely they will show that Dec 09 was a warm month, which will make 2009 one of the warmest years on record.

The continuation of the El Nino is expected to keep the temp anomalies during the first half of the year pretty high, which suggests that 2010 will be a very warm year too.

re: #278 Rightwingconspirator

You conclude that despite a Democratic President and his party in a majority of both houses. Huh. Gotta think about an issue driven spectrum rather than power structure spectrum.

I would argue that the policies of the Democratic Party are hardly leftist. In health care reform, they went for an odd combination of mild fixes, rather than single-payer or even a national health service. They generally tried to leave the private health insurance system in place. On climate change, they go for cap-and-trade, rather than draconian restrictions on industry. Even in bailing out corporations during the worst of the downturn, they were careful to keep the organizations largely private, minimizing elements of nationalization. Truly leftist policies would be far different.

In the main, the policies of the current administration are more similar to those of the previous administration than different, but for those where an element of Religious Right purity crept into GW Bush administration, such as the abortion gag rule and gay rights.

Looked at along a left/right spectrum, the domestic policies of the Obama administration are, more often than not, about in line with those of the Nixon administration. (Imagine trying to pass the Clean Water Act in today's Washington.) The political center in Washington, if not in the population in general, has shifted notably rightward in the last 40 years.

Yeah. It's definitely a valid reason for Saddam's removal, and I agree that more of that kind of thinking would have helped avert Darfur, Rwanda-- but is it a valid reason for the US to have gone to war with Iraq when it did? Especially as that wasn't the reason originally given to us for going to war? I don't think so either. We needed to be in Afghanistan and other places if we were intending to fight the war on terror. No one can be sorry Saddam is gone, but I can be sorry about all the American (and other allied) soldiers who are. (not that I wouldn't be anyway, obviously).

This of course is what ripped the country up for 8 years, and I'm not sure I want to have that battle here all over again. We went. Now we have to deal with it.

I saw The Birthers™ again out in front of the post office the other day. They had a huge Obama poster with a Hitler mustache and Nazi signs. I just laughed and told them they were absolute morons. They asked me to leave them alone.

Leave me alone! That's funny. I never saw direct protesting but last December I was drinking with a friend at this Greek bar. Anywho, the owner grabs me by my arm while we're outside smoking a cigarette and tells me almost as if in confidence, "do you know, he (Obama) was not even born in America, he come from Kenya." I was like uh huh, uh huh, sure man, whatever you say. Whoboy.

My ex-gf used to live by this guy with political signage. Paranoid anti-government signs. Get this. He also had a 6 foot high chain link fence. And this was like in a concentrated city subdivision setting.

Oddly enough they were (are) both compared to Hitler by the extremists.

That's because the extremists of both sides didn't pay attention in history class. Or because they're deliberately dense in order to cloud whatever issue they're arguing about.

I immediately lose all respect for people when they start pulling a Godwin and comparing current political leaders to Hitler, or any current issues to the Holocaust. It's stupid and offensive and trivializes the very real evils that they're using to try and make some sort of ham-handed point. I can't stand that sort of intellectual laziness. It irks me.

HuffingtonPost had a link that allowed you to put in a name and find out who they contributed to. So I started plugging in friends and old friends. A guy I used to hang with a long time ago gave Ron Paul $500. If I see him again that'll be Topic A.

On healthcare and the spectrum of politics and options- This administration never even looked at increased regulation of current insurers and medical providers like say public utilities. Instead they went big, and got pushed back.

When Chrysler and Lockheed got into big trouble way back when, and were regarded in other terms as too big to fail they got loans. No big taxpayer buy ins, no firing of the CEO. Just loans. Under Reagan we had a bank crisis and a savings and loan crisis. The response was both effective and unlike what we see today.

Yes, and some of the people who criticised Bush don't care when Obama continues or expands those Bush policies--and the folks who had no problem with it under Bush are suddenly up in arms over Obama-- usually in the latter case they don't care about the real civil libertarian issues, but over issues like the new Interpol freakout meme.

Some people enjoy being afraid. Part of the pull of conspiracy theories for their adherents is that it gives them the sense of being part of a select group or club-- the only ones who know 'what's really going on'.

There's also a substantial benefit to the politics of fear, for the people in power who enjoy manipulating others by deliberately frightening them. Look at the healthcare fearmongering, or the teabaggers. The teabaggers have a lot of inchoate rage and fear, and groups like FreedomWorks are cynically manipulating that fear.

A good peasant is loyal, simpleminded, and full of misdirected anger. (matt taibbi article on the tea parties )

I can certainly see what you're saying. But it seems that many of the provisions of the proposed reform do boil to down to increased industry regulation—items such as removing pre-existing conditions restrictions and limiting pricing based on age—rather than trying to fundamentally change the system. Even forcing private insurers into exchanges is more a matter of regulation than a fundamental change in the way health insurance is delivered.

I personally would be happy with a tightly regulated private health insurance industry like those in several European countries if I believed that our government, whose elections are funded by monied interests, could for a moment be trusted to tightly regulate any business. In lieu of that, I look to single-payer.

And I see what you're saying about the simpler methods of bail-outs in the past. But I can also see how buying stock offered a better chance of return than simple loans. The S&L clean-up largely involved private firms being taken over and liquidated by the government, which I would argue is more intrusive than the TARP loans or even the the stock purchases. In any case, none of these policies are notably leftist.

-The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. THAT is why I am your king.

-Listen, strange women lyin' in ponds distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

I have no argument with your points really.
It is interesting that health reform is boiling (or leaking?) down to mere regulations. But, alas still far short of the public utilities model. For the life of me I can not see why not to let medical providers work across state lines. Even Medicare is Medical here.

The blue dog Dems stopped the big public option, and utterly prevent single payer from having a shot. The TARP was 400 pages of inadequate regulation that has created monopolies. Go figure.

But the last week his show has not had anything about the Muslim in it, He had on Huntsman 1 hour, a male singer, 1 hours, I was so disappointed, but this means he is really running scared. Those ACORN thugs can get vicious and that would scare his wife and kids, whatever, get the head Muslim and so much will be lots better. He should be arrested by citizens and sent to Gitmo and never heard of again. Reggie Love would miss him, Michelle doubt it. God Bless America
