Loony demagogue Glenn Beck went on a tear today, ranting about all the mean things people have said about him, and I enjoyed hearing him say this quote from yours truly so much I had to save the clip to YouTube. Repeated thrice for three times the wonderfulness.

Going out on a limb here. Conservatism may be sick, in a coma, lost its way. But not dead. Not dead because good people of a conservative bent will arise in the vacuum. They will rise and take their place in the checks and balances that provided this nation with success after success. Even if only in response to unfettered Liberalism.

Time will show me right or wrong. But ponder this-Liberal and more liberal as a balance? This makes even less sense to me than what we have now. Balance. Patience.

i haven't gotten around to them yet - but John Dean's "Conservatives Without Concience" is meant to be a good study into the current strand of authoritarian conservatism and it's roots.

Frank Schaeffer's "Crazy For God" gives an inside track on the founding of the Religious RIght and its subsequent powergrabs as tod by the son of one of it's founders.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone here has read either... i'll get around to them soon, but would like thoughts before i head in.

I am constantly telling people...if you want to know what true conservatism is all about, read the transcript of Ronald Reagan's 1964 speech in support of Barry Goldwater, "A Time for Choosing," or his 1975 CPAC speech. You really don't need much else.

It will probably be in a third party if it happens at all in the medium to long term - the GOP is completely glazed over and dead behind the eyes at a national level. Scratch the surface of those at the top and you get talking points about why the teabaggers are great and why all of Obama's spending is bad but Bush's wasn't quite so bad.

It's an ex-political party. there are good local parties and good local candidates who believe in letting people get on with their own lives and reducing taxes/spending, but nationally it's the party of the Schiavo vote, not the party of letting people live their own/die their own lives.

If a small caucus of GOPers and Centrist Dems from the house and senate formed a third party based on small government/personal freedom... i think thats a much more sustainable model than any Tea Party emerging from the othger side of the schism. I really hope nothing sinister comes of this investigation.

White House is investigating whether or not the systemic failure was anything more than human error. The questions being asked are -- was this some kind of failure due to internal tensions between intelligence communities? Was information withheld intentionally in order to "make someone look bad?"

Just to continue briefly before I gotta go. Even a guy I used to respect, John McCain, didn't think he could win with a real conservative. I'll never understand why he picked Palin instead of Ridge. What he would have lost in the base he could have picked up from the center. But now we know he didn't know who he was picking after all, so it's for the best that he lost. I think we're at a point where the only real conservative politicians are Democrats. I don't think there was a Republican around who said the emperor was wearing no clothes last fall. Well, according to that site there are two people with my combination of first and last name, and I suspect I am both of them (sometimes I use my middle initial/name and sometimes I don't.)

Do I believe that site? Maybe. Other sites on which I have searched have come up with a handful of possibilities, but my investigation has led me to believe that most of them trace back to myself.

There may be another person in the US with my name, and it happens to be a female, but I've not been able to verify that.

So what's in a name? Good question. Only good point in having a unique name that I've found is that the .com domain name happens to be available.

In seriousness though - as a national political force sane small government/personal freedom conservatives don't have a natural home. The Democrats spend too much and the personal freedoms the GOP stands for on a national level are those doled out from the old testament.

There is a big problem that people of good concience are trying to solve - the biggest part of that job is trying to bring the GOP nationally to the first step of 12 - admitting that it has a problem. The base has shrunk so small that the 25%er's don't see a problem with it. That 25% is a firm number because those people are tribalists that it would take a tsunami to dislodge. People who stayed loyal and "very satisfied" during record spending, record deficits and unfunded wars - those people are difficult to shake out of complacency.

There are ebbs and flows in party politics. Right now, the GOP lost some elections and the people shrieking are getting a lot of attention (don't forget that a lot of the people giving them a lot of attention are liberals). We are barely one year out from a major election with a lot of emotion and there's no way to draw conclusions from the dynamics at the moment.

The downward spiral has been happening for a while.

But this isn't about the health of the GOP per'se - it's about returning small govt/personal freedom conservatism to something thats got a voice on the national stage. As people - not just me - have pointed out, it need not happen in the GOP.

I think the GOP could rebound in '10 -but with nothing remotely resembling any sort of a plan other than to shout very loudly and energise a lot of scared and angry people, in short, a mob (see Townhalls circa '09). Shouting and waving of arms is not a political stratergy that will persuade people you are ready to govern though. Lord knows the democrats tried long enough before finding a broad swathe of candidates who could run and win across 50 states, sometimes eschewing liberalism, sometimes not.

If the teabaggers or professional nay sayers take firmer hold of the GOP any gains in '10 will be naught but a dead cat bounce.

I'll agree somewhat with the challenge presented here, but the GOP is very much still the best hope, and it's where that change will come from when it comes. The problem isn't in getting a voice on the national stage, it's that the national stage is too big. Someone who wins the Republican vote in Tennessee looks very different from someone who can win that vote in Colorado. On the national stage, there are too many voices, too many questions, too many opinions.

Sanity and electabillity are national issues. The current GOP congressional caucus and it's senate caucus are onthe national stage - most people are not involved in local politics and form their opinions from the national discourse.

Local issues differ from district to district - thats why Howard Dean instituted the 50 state stratergy in charge of the Democrats - he picked centrists to win in the south, liberals to win in liberal areas and allowed candidates to deregate from the platform on "Life" and a couple of other issues - there will, i fear, be no such tolerance in the GOP under Steele, who is too liberal for many already and certainly not under any successor.

The GOP will be the home for Conservatism as we understand it if the tea-partiers split officially, if not it's going to be a very long lonely road with NY-23 played out all over the country.

You do realize that NM is a state with a pretty low population per square mile and that the federal spending numbers include the budgets for federal installations within its borders (such as the Sandia and Los Alamos National Labs, White Sands Missile Test Range, Holloman AFB, Cannon AFB, and Kirtland AFB).

There's a reason why those facilities are in NM...lots of space in the middle of BFE. I think that the federal spending per capita numbers of NM are a quite bit skewed because of that.

Your description of New Mexico is accurate. My brother is a physicist at Sandia National Labs on Kirtland, and my former brother in law is a physicist at Los Alamos. So I know the state reasonably well. I lived in AQ a long long time ago when I was very young. Low population density; high federal spending.

Absolutely. But Reagan signed on the dotted line and he was Mr. Small Government. If you want to run on small government you have to actually do something. Reagan campaigned against Carter's budget deficits. Reagan's budget deficits were massively larger than Carter's. W's budget deficits were astronomical compared with Clinton's surpluses. If conservatives want to talk small government they have to do something when they are in power. Otherwise it's just rhetoric.

CA has almost twice as much land mass as NM and a much bigger population, not to mention more dependable and more viable sources of water and electricity (for the most part), something needed to support a large population and industrial base (read: more people to get more taxes from). What NM has is wide, open spaces without a lot of people, something the Feds saw an advantage in when the National Labs and the military bases were put there.

You may say NM is a "welfare state" because of this, but NO state has yet completely refused to drink from the federal trough and CA sure as hell gets more than its fair share at times, I'm sure.

Yes conservatives who want less increase of governmental bureaucracy in areas of social and services also believe in the governments role of protecting the country. It is not hypocrisy, rather consistent with conservative ideas.

They are separate issues, as it the size of the budget in absolute terms.

You can argue against these ideas, but trying to simply undermine them through redefinition is not acceptable.

I see what you're saying and I certainly don't want to make it sound like I support giving the DoD a blank check and leaving them to spend like drunken sailors on leave (pun sorta intended ;-P). Amending my previous statement, I want our men and women in uniform to have the best training and equipment we can give them, because it gives them a much better chance of coming home from a tour alive and in one piece, but I also want the Pentagon to spend their budgets wisely and not waste money on boondoggles, pipe dreams, and utterly unnecessary things.

In essence, this whole attempt to re-lable the small is really big and you did it too and should admit/realise it, is really misleading.

Yes conservatives who want less increase of governmental bureaucracy in areas of social and services also believe in the governments role of protecting the country. It is not hypocrisy, rather consistent with conservative ideas.

They are separate issues, as it the size of the budget in absolute terms.

You can argue against these ideas, but trying to simply undermine them through redefinition is not acceptable.

Liberals and conservatives have different ideas about the goverment's primary role. I think they are both right to a degree - we need defense spending, we need a safety net. Defense and general welfare do not cancel each other out.

It's the fact that one side promotes their ideology as being "less government" while the other one is "big government" irritates me to no end. I've never heard a liberal talk about the military in the way conservatives talk about social programs.

First, I prefer to call it 'Obamacare', but secondly, that's true. However, the need for a general defense and a standing military does not justify any and all military spending, or indeed, any and all military operations. Nor does the Constitution support only government military spending while discouraging all others.

We have to make choices about how we use money as a country. Some people come to the table with the understanding that they will consider any amount of military spending to be reasonable, and any domestic spending, especially that to be used for social programs, excessive. That's a political stance, not mine, but one, and one that should be clarified if people are going to use 'small government' as a slogan.

That could come in handy a lot, I think. Might be a nice way of getting people to clarify their comment without feeling like they're being attacked in some way too, with a lot of people all asking "What does that mean?" all at once.
I've also seen people think questions for clarification are meant in a hostile fashion when they're not.

Then again, now that I think about it, people might use it too much. It could wind up inhibiting discussion-- people might use it instead of commenting, and the person getting "??" might not know what the ? is for, and thus not know what to answer (and not say anything at all).

Probably better on balance not to have it.

I think he is as well. I just think the label serves to a. turn the whole thing into even more of a partisan circus and b. imply that the government is going to be providing healthcare services, which is a source of so much confusion and horror that I would like to avoid it.

I have mixed feelings on the subject, because the health care from my employer really sucks, at least for part-time employees.

It's also an inaccurate label. The comparison is with HillaryCare -- that label made sense, since they brought a proposal to Congress, which Congress then promptly shredded.

Obama forced Congress to come up with the bill precisely to avoid the same debacle. Using the label "ObamaCare" is meant to portray the bill as developed by Obama, not Congress.

Why should it? Bush was in charge, it's how it works. The war in Afghanistan was also Bush's war and now it is Obama's war. comes with the office.

Obama championed Health Care Reform - or whatever full name one wants - thus it is rightfully called Obamacare. One would think Democrats would be proud of this as they presumably support it.

If Hilary was president it would be HilaryHealth, or ClintonCare or some such.

I'm really disheartened about how the repubs have dropped the ball, the or grasp of the far right which alienates just about everyone even those of us that lean right in certain respects ( I consider myself independent)...maybe a complete dissolution of the conservative party as we know it or at least a total overhaul is in order, but I still stand firm in my belief that the left and in particular Obama are NOT the answer either.

If Obama can do well by the country than I'm all for it, as Ive said before, I will never hate my president more than I love my country.
