Breitbart’s Big Government Finally Retracts False Claim

Media • Views: 4,372

It took him six days to do it, but Andrew Breitbart has finally issued a lame semi-apology for his completely false claim that the CEO of ACORN visited the White House on September 5th: UPDATE: White House Spokeswoman Says Different Bertha Lewis on Visitor’s Log - Big Government.

Of course, it wouldn’t be the “Big Government” blog if Breitbart didn’t also take the opportunity to hint about dark conspiracies yet to be uncovered:

I end with this question: What is the point of the White House issuing visitor logs if those named can’t be identified and verified? “Transparency” would seem to call for nothing less, especially when those innocent people could easily be confused with the head of an organization recently defunded by Congress, a controversial preacher who shouted “God Damn America,” and an unrepentant domestic terrorist.

Right. Because everyone who visits the White House should have their personal information revealed to the wingnut blogosphere — especially if their name resembles the name of a wingnut target. What could possibly go wrong with that?

Something tells me that Breitbart himself wouldn’t be too happy if the White House revealed his personal information.

Let me see if I've got this straight. It would have been OK for me, last administration, to demand full personal information on every single person let into the White House, so I could monitor if George W. Bush or anyone in his administration was meeting with anyone I disapproved of?

God DAMNIT! I told Rainbow we should've gone for it!

Typically, does legislation go into effect if there are pending lawsuits?

I'm not a legal lizard but I'm pretty sure the law goes through until there's a legal ruling against it. Just like the patriot act had a lot of legal challenges it stayed in effect until there were rulings. The Republicans are only wasting tax payer money with legal challenges to Healthcare reform. They'll never get it axed by the courts.

It does depend on the legislative regime...and it depends on the nature of the claims against the application of the legislation.

Claiming a hangnail because of a law making it illegal to do some little act won't be treated the same as a claim of irreparable harm to person or property based on a major piece of legislation.

Well, you could start by noticing that Brietbart only 'retracted' his claim to peddle the already debunked smear that William Ayers and Jeremiah Wright were also visitors.

Here is Norm Eisen, pecial counsel to the president for ethics and government reform, in October on that:

There’s an important lesson here as well. This unprecedented level of transparency can sometimes be confusing rather than providing clear information.

A lot of people visit the White House, up to 100,000 each month, with many of those folks coming to tour the buildings. Given this large amount of data, the records we are publishing today include a few “false positives” – names that make you think of a well-known person, but are actually someone else. In September, requests were submitted for the names of some famous or controversial figures (for example Michael Jordan, William Ayers, Michael Moore, Jeremiah Wright, Robert Kelly ("R. Kelly"), and Malik Shabazz). The well-known individuals with those names never actually came to the White House. Nevertheless, we were asked for those names and so we have included records for those individuals who were here and share the same names.

As I first read the story about poor Bertha, whomever she may be, it was reported she went on a "staff tour." Staff tours to the Whitehouse can be obtained by any U.S. citizen. You have to ask your Congressman or Senator for tickets. Was she and the others on a staff tour or had a private invite? There seems to be a huge difference.

From what I read, staff and public tours are basically the same, except staff tours are given by a member of your representative's staff. It's a private tour and starts at a set time. Otherwise it's the same as a public tour in that you don't get to see the Prez, the Oval Office or the living quarters.

I didn't really give him as much credit for that speech as some did. It was notable for two things: A non-defense defense of Wright and the coining of the phrase "typical white person".

When the President turned on Wright only a short time later, it laid bare some of what he said in Philly.

Agreed. I thought the speech was fairly lame. Obama was trying to tap-dance his way out of trouble and when that didn't work he threw Wright under the bus.

A bit to unpack here:

First off, I figured that LGF can handle a little diversity of opinion...respectfully offered. I still think that.

Second, if the facts are accurate and my understanding of them are accurate, they aren't talking points-they are legit questions. Or were...since the President was, after all, elected.

Third, anyone who thinks 9-11 was caused by or brought on by lesbians is off the deepend. I would hope that anyone running for president that would say such a thing would be slammed appropriately.

All opinions are not created equal! If you say something stupid, don't expect a pass. And if you parrot talking points from the campaign about Bill Ayers and Wright, you'll probably be made fun of.

I most certainly do not remember president Bush weathering slings and arrows for his associations with noted bigot and loon James Dobson. I don't believe Obama's associations with Wright reach any sort of real political significance beyond the squared circle of the 2008 presidential campaign. Smear merchants dug through untold hours of video tape to find some inflammatory rhetoric to attack Wright on, and because he's a charismatic preacher, they found it. And tried to use it. And it didn't work. And then Obama distanced himself from the guy.

And you can continue to ask your very original and thoughtful tough questions that have already been asked and answered a million times. There's nothing there. You desperately wish there were, but there is not.

And I don't know what purity test you refer to, I'm a liberal who consistently votes Democrat, I'm in the minority here.

I quite agree, however a disturbing number of U.S. presidents were long-time associates of the man who did say that, and no one blinked an eye over it. Not to mention the Dobson situation.

I am not a big fan of Jeremiah Wright, but I do find the number of disgusting 'men of God' who have had and continue to have access to presidents without it troubling anyone extremely disturbing.

Quote!

There are numerous Americans who have felt the scorn of Obama from Rod Blagojevich in legal remedy, John Edwards in being smeared, Elliot Spitzer to being outed, Lawrence Sinclair to being set up, and numerous bloggers who have had their emails tapped and other situations they do not quite comprehend as just flukes. The technology is there to do what Rush Limbaugh experienced. It is time that Republicans in Congress started asking the DOD just what is available in Star Wars and if Mr. Limbaugh’s symptoms could be mimicked to create exactly what he suffered from.

Strange is it not when it is the globalist backed ilk making wild claims about things Americans are doing the internet is alive with accusations, but when it is someone like Rush Limbaugh suffering from what looks like a neuro electric attack, all of these protectors of the world, seem never to notice or write one story or have one program on who just tried to assassinate Rush Hudson Limbaugh.

We have a comment:

We the People are thinking the same thing. The NWO crowd has used the same mo for a longtime: suicides, heart attacks and gunshot execution style. In the 70’s chemicals were put on touchable surfaces to induce heart attacks. Epichlorohydrine is one such chemical. One drop
will induce cardiac arrest within thirty seconds with almost no residual trace.

re: #138 SanFranciscoZionist

I see your point. I think that with President Bush we had some (albeit limited) background based on this time as Governor of Texas. With President Obama, he was, for many a true unknown. As we tried to "get to know him", we were confronted with things like Reverend Wright. I think the reason it was so important for then-candidate Obama was that we literally didn't have a substantial record to review, or a pre-existing understanding of the man. In that regard, it was potentially significant. Though a majority of the voters didn't mind.

I do think that when you are the President of the United States you have to handle things differently. I would agree with you there. President Bush is not above critique.

Well, let's just say I'm not surprised that an inflammatory black preacher associated with a black presidential candidate gets a lot more attention than inflammatory white preachers associated with white presidents.

Bring on the downdings :D

I don't like Wright's rhetoric, but it doesn't really affect me. He wa spainted as demonic when i don't think he's remotely on the same level as a Falwell or a Dobson. He's not hooked into the government, so it's irrelevant to me. Whereas Dobson and co, they WERE hooked into the government. Their wishes became the administration's wishes. Their influence with the base of the Republican party meant they could often get their way. If Wright had access to the President, and his rhetoric started to beocme the administration's agenda, I'd be furious.

But it hasn't!

re: #132 WindUpBird

Still waiting form someone to point out something "stupid" I have written...wrong, mis-informed, maybe.

I am not parroting talking points from a campaign. Check the thread. This whole thing came up when someone asked if it would be smear if JW and BA were coming to the White House and someone pointed that out. If the associations lost their import (if they had any to begin with) with the election of the President, that would make sense. However, if the President was taking tea with Ayers, Wright, and other controversial people while President, you can't be surprised that there might be some questions asked.

Besides, as a liberal democrat you should be thrilled with the way things are going. You are going to get your healthcare reform bill, you are going to get a new foreign policy and the White House is pushing immigration reform and cap&trade. Cheer up!

C.I.A. Is Sharing Data With Climate Scientists

The nation’s top scientists and spies are collaborating on an effort to use the federal government’s intelligence assets — including spy satellites and other classified sensors — to assess the hidden complexities of environmental change. They seek insights from natural phenomena like clouds and glaciers, deserts and tropical forests.

The collaboration restarts an effort the Bush administration shut down and has the strong backing of the director of the Central Intelligence Agency. In the last year, as part of the effort, the collaborators have scrutinized images of Arctic sea ice from reconnaissance satellites in an effort to distinguish things like summer melts from climate trends, and they have had images of the ice pack declassified to speed the scientific analysis.

The TV show gave you a lot of periods and settings that were neat to see and the production values on the TV show were very solid. I can understand anyone that thinks Lambert is the only one, but Paul had some class and made for some good TV. Aside from the automatic comedy value here, this is a legit idea.

About 15 years ago Senator Sam Nunn (I think) floated the idea (I read about it in Avation Week and Space Technology) of using spy sats and other intel assets to study the earth. It wasn't just about climate, it was about all sorts of things: weather, pollution, other atmospheric issues and other environmental issues.

It was a good idea as long as you weren't in high school debate...because every good idea in high school debate leads to nuclear war.

re: #216 brainwizard73

Aside from the automatic comedy value here, this is a legit idea.

About 15 years ago Senator Sam Nunn (I think) floated the idea (I read about it in Avation Week and Space Technology) of using spy sats and other intel assets to study the earth. It wasn't just about climate, it was about all sorts of things: weather, pollution, other atmospheric issues and other environmental issues.

It was a good idea as long as you weren't in high school debate...because every good idea in high school debate leads to nuclear war.

The article says the programs name was/is Measurements of Earth Data for Environmental Analysis (MEDEA). Started in 1992 and ended in 2001. Restarted now. Would be interesting to look up the origin.

Yeah, the days of mapping and associated secrets are long gone. Short of data that would reveal secret military or intelligence facilities. The Russian and the Chinese have enough undersea data already and they're keeping up to date on their own end. Plus they're no longer and active threat as they were during the cold war.

A lot of the ice and oceanic research is large part of the primary requirements for the Navy. As is atmospheric research by the Air Force. Both would deal largely in meteorology and climate. I think the task is almost natural for the DoD given their accomplishment in aeronautical and supsequent aerospace R/D and missions.

re: #285 SanFranciscoZionist

From the article:

The decision followed a warning from Terri Dowty, of Action for Rights of Children, that the scanners could breach the Protection of Children Act 1978, under which it is illegal to create an indecent image or a "pseudo-image" of a child.

Dowty told the Guardian she raised concerns with the Metropolitan police five years ago over plans to use similar scanners in an anti-knife campaign, and when the Department for Transport began a similar trial in 2006 on the Heathrow Express rail service from Paddington station.

"They do not have the legal power to use full body scanners in this way," said Dowty, adding there was an exemption in the 1978 law to cover the "prevention and detection of crime" but the purpose had to be more specific than the "trawling exercise" now being considered.

I'm a liberal, but I'm also a student of the Game of Politics, not one of the hysterics over at Kos. Which is why I get exasperated at anyone bringing up the Wright thing. Those pieces are off the chessboard!

You could be speaking for me here. I expected Obama to be a moderate so I'm not disappointed in him at all. But I do get exasperated at the Obama is a socialist/commie meme, it's so 1950's.

Seriously. If I understand the process correctly, you get scanned, your basic body shape (apple, in need of toning, in my case) goes to some person sitting in a room scanning endless pictures of naked people, and they check that you don't have a bomb in your panties. Upon the 'no bomb in panties' all clear, they hit a button, and your image gets wiped. Am I missing something? Because that doesn't bother me at all.

I think it was an "A" for intent, but a "D+" for execution. Brit should have just started off by saying that Tiger needs forgiveness and redemption.

Don't we all? That would be totally non-offensive.

Honestly, those specific terms would have been skating on the edges of religious intent. I'm a possibilian, for me the idea-space of the divine and an afterlife is fascinating as literature, but it's hard for me to believe in anything specific beyond the possibility, so the advocacy of one's own beliefs isn't really the problem here for me.

Maybe I'm just pissed off as someone whose been cheated on, and had my marriage fall apart as a result, it bothers me deeply to see some sanctimonious asshole use some sport's icon's failure to act like a real man as an opportunity to market his personal brand of what Dennis Miller, when he was still funny, called "ecclesiastical white-out."

I hate Hume for making me feel any kind of sympathy at all for Woods. I didn't think it was possible.

The basic problem is that people don't have faith that things will work out like that. Part of that is simple distrust of government. Too often we hear government agencies boast of their safeguards, only to find out later that the safeguards sometimes didn't work. Those failures cause distrust.

I don't have anything to "brag" about, but I am tempted to book flights with airports that use full body scanners just so I can make them look at me. Boo-Yeah! Now what!

I can understand that, although I have to say that if I discover that airport security have been laughing at my flabby, headless physique, or for that matter, whacking off to it, my degree of caring will still be exceedingly low.

But people are gonna have to make up their minds, because what I was hearing a lot of right after Christmas was 'they have to make sure I can never die in a terrorist attack on a plane'. If these same people are now saying that they can't possibly be scanned, we may have a problem.

It is not an x-ray that images bones so much as a device that images the skin without the cloths.

One system uses radio-frequency waves to create a 3-D image sans clothing, though there is a backscatter unit which uses x-rays. I expect the device using the radio-frequency will be more widely adopted.

It would be unprofessional and a sign that the screener is not focused. They would be there to look for hidden devices or weapons -- not to gaze at the body form of the person they're scanning. But, I'm pretty sure after two weeks of this they won't care and it will be a routine not unlike what nurses and doctors do.

Yeah, me too. Don't get me started on the dispersal of funds. From CNN in 2004:

Since the September 11 attacks, about $13.1 billion has surged into state coffers from the federal government -- sorely needed money that has gone for police, fire and emergency services to help finance equipment and training to prevent and respond to terrorist attacks.

That is a 990% increase over the $1.2 billion spent by the federal government for similar programs in the preceding three years. But the vast majority of the $13.1 billion was distributed with no regard for the threats, vulnerabilities and potential consequences faced by each region.

Of the top 10 states and districts receiving the most money per capita last year, only the District of Columbia also appeared on a list of the top 10 most at-risk places, as calculated by AIR for TIME. In fact, funding appears to be almost inversely proportional to risk.

If all the federal homeland-security grants from last year are added together, Wyoming received $61 a person while California got just $14, according to data gathered at TIME's request by the Public Policy Institute of California, an independent, nonprofit research organization. Alaska received an impressive $58 a resident, while New York got less than $25. On and on goes the upside-down math of the new homeland-security funding.

I guess they needed to make sure all the 'real americans' in Wasilla were safe.

As for New York, i think this lovely Onion video captures it:

Barack Obama denounced Rev. Jeremiah Wright in very strong terms.

That was the end of it. This talking point is dead.

That depends on what your definition of "it" is, I guess. I'm happy to accept the denunciation of Wright at face value, and to keep it in my back pocket for deployment at the first sign of an attempt to implement any of Wright's racist, hateful wet dreams.

But the claim that this dimension of Wright's character came as a surprise after long years of steady attendance at his church strikes me as a flat-out lie. I would be much more comfortable with a simple acknowledgment that he was aware of Wright's excesses, but overlooked them because of their relative rarity and an otherwise cordial relationship with Wright, which is probably closer to the truth. Jettisoning old friends like so much lice-infested clothing at the first hint of discord is not an admirable trait. It smacks of a man whose principles are determined by holding his finger in the political wind, rather than from any personal conviction.

In some cases, yes. Parents have been arrested for that.

It happens a few times a year. This one was just a few months ago:

[Link: abcnews.go.com...]

The Peoria, Ariz., couple had their home searched by police and worse, their children -- then ages 18 months, 4 and 5 -- were taken from them for more than month. Their names were placed on a sex offender registry for a time, and Lisa Demaree was suspended from her school job for a year. The couple said they have spent $75,000 on legal bills.

A report issued by local authorities described the photos as "child erotica" and "sex exploitation," the couple's lawyer Dick Treon told "Good Morning America." He said the person responsible for the report was unqualified to make such judgments.

The Demarees are now sharing a few of the photos with the public, he said, so the "truth to catch up with the lie."

"These photos were never intended for anyone to see except for family members," Treon said. "Perversion is in the eye of the viewer."

re: #69 SanFranciscoZionist

Anyone remember the West Wing episode where Sam is dealing with the third graders to whom he's supposed to show the White House? Except he has no idea about the White House? And he thinks one of the third graders is Leo's daughter?

"And the Roosevelt Room is named for Theodore. Not Franklin. You might have figured that out. There's a six-foot portrait of Teddy Roosevelt on the wall behind you."

Way, way late, but I love this too much not to post it:

MALLORY: Hi.
SAM: How ya doin’?
MALLORY: I’m sorry to be rude, but are you a moron?
SAM: In this particular area, yes.
MALLORY: The 18th president was Ulysses S. Grant, and the Roosevelt Room was named for Theodore.
SAM: Really?
MALLORY: There’s like a six-foot painting on the wall of Teddy Roosevelt.
SAM: I should’ve put two and two together.
MALLORY: Yes.
SAM: Look, the thing is, while there are really a great many things I can speak with authority, I’m not good at talking about the White House.
MALLORY: You’re the White House Deputy Communications Director and you’re not good at talking about the White House?
SAM: Ironic, isn’t it?
MALLORY: I don’t believe this--
SAM: Wait a minute. Wait. Please. Could you do me favor? Could you tell me which one of those kids is Leo McGarry’s daughter?
MALLORY: Why?
SAM: Well, if I could make eye contact with her, make her laugh, you know, just see that she has a good time, it might go a long way toward making my life easier.
MALLORY: These children worked hard. All of them. And I’m not inclined at this moment to make your life easier.
SAM: Ms. O’Brian, I understand your feelings, but please believe me when I tell you that I’m a nice guy having a bad day. I just found out the Times is publishing a poll that says a considerable portion of Americans feel that the White House has lost energy and focus. A perception that’s not likely to be altered by the video footage of the President riding his bicycle into a tree. As we speak, the Coast Guard are fishing Cubans out of the Atlantic Ocean while the Governor of Florida wants to blockade the Port of Miami. A good friend of mine’s about to get fired for going on television and making sense, and it turns out I accidentally slept with a prostitute last night. Now. Would you please, in the name of compassion, tell me which one of those kids is my boss’s daughter.
MALLORY: That would be me.
SAM: You.
MALLORY: Yes.
SAM: Leo’s daughter’s fourth grade class.
MALLORY: Yes.
SAM: Well, this is bad on so many levels.
