I think it might be good to follow up on Monday's post about the connection between American Evangelicals and the "kill the gays" bill in Uganda.
Box Turtle Bulletin now has video of Scott Lively speaking at last year's conference in Uganda. If you don't know who Lively is, he's the author of the debunked book The Pink Swastika, which claims that gays were the controlling members of the Nazi party, and by extension, responsible for the Holocaust. The Southern Poverty Law Center only has 11 anti-gay hate groups on its roster, and Lively is involved with three of them.
This is what unbridled hatred masquerading as religious faith mixed with right-wing politics looks like:

I'm glad these guys got paid but I was rooting for a USSC decision that would have done away with the whole prosecutorial immunity thing. Any system that allows prosecutors to fabricate evidence and lie in court in order to convict someone is broken

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A multimillion-dollar settlement on Monday ended the Supreme Court's consideration of a case that could have changed the legal protections that criminal prosecutors get as they do their jobs.The high court agreed to dismiss the case after Terry Harrington and Curtis W. McGhee Jr. agreed to a $12 million settlement with Pottawattamie County, Iowa, and two of its former prosecutors.

McGhee and Harrington were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison in 1978 for the death of retired police officer John Schweer. The men were released from prison after 25 years.McGhee and Harrington sued, saying that as prosecutors Richter and Hrvol had them arrested without probable cause, coerced and coached witnesses, fabricated evidence against them and concealed evidence that could have cleared them. They claimed authorities were eager to charge someone and that they were targeted because they are black.
Richter and Hrvol argued, however, that they were immune from lawsuits because they were acting within the scope of their job. Ordinarily, prosecutors are immune from lawsuits based on their work at trial.

(A little morning humor before I leave for work, for those who missed this yesterday afternoon).
Notes from a thrift store furniture department worker...
Today I learned all about the pallet jack. It's amazing how much weight that thing can lift, just from a simple pumping of the handle. It's amazing how a pallet full of furniture glides along with almost no effort from me, rolling on the pallet jack. It's amazing how fucking hard it is to stop 500 pounds of furniture from gliding effortlessly into other coworkers if you are the only thing between the amazing pallet jack and the rest of the crew... my bad.
Today we learn all about the amazing commercial sized trash compactor.

Well, back around 1973, I worked for about two weeks in a metal fabricating shop, and they had a fork lift driver who was nuts. If he didn't like you, he would actually attempt to ram you with the forks. I saw it happen, I left that job pronto.

Beyond the Gulf of Mexico, companies have announced big finds off the coasts of Brazil and Ghana, leading some experts to suggest the existence of a massive oil reservoir stretching across the Atlantic from Africa to South America. Production from deepwater projects -- those in water at least 1,000 feet deep -- grew by 67%, or by about 2.3 million barrels a day, between 2005 and 2008, according to PFC Energy, a Washington consulting firm.
The discoveries come as many of the giant oil fields of the past century are beginning to dry up, and as some experts are warning that global oil production could soon reach a peak and begin to decline. The new deepwater fields represent a huge and largely untapped source of oil, which could help ease fears that the world won't be able to meet demand for energy, which is expected to grow rapidly in coming years.

Horrifying story, and you really have to read it all to get the full, er, flavor. They are poisoning the populace with ammonia and enteropathogenic bacteria, all with USDA approval.

Pathogens died when enough ammonia was used to raise the alkalinity of the beef to a high level, company research found. But early on, school lunch officials and other customers complained about the taste and smell of the beef. Samples of the processed beef obtained by The Times revealed lower levels of alkalinity, suggesting less ammonia was used.
Beef Products acknowledged lowering the alkalinity, and the U.S.D.A. said it had determined that “at least some of B.P.I.’s product was no longer receiving the full lethality treatment.”
Beef Products said it had submitted new research to the agriculture department showing that its treatment remained effective with lower alkalinity. Agriculture officials said Beef Products’ latest study is under review.
Under review, but still being sold, and still being used in school lunches. But if you buy any product called "ground beef," or even "ground Angus," you are probably consuming some of this crap.
School lunch officials said they ultimately agreed to use the treated meat because it shaved about 3 cents off the cost of making a pound of ground beef.“Several packers have unofficially raised concern regarding the use of the product since the perception of quality is inferior,” the 2002 memo said. “But will use product to obtain lower bid.”

Getting busy at County General
The other day, during another busy shift, I walked into Room 31, ready to treat a new patient. What I walked into, however, caught me off-guard. In fact, I think I blushed. And after everything I've seen and treated in the ER over these past years, to get me to blush is a major accomplishment.
Lying in the cot, covered by a thin papery sheet, was a very "loving", shall we say, young couple. They were in the midst of some passionate maneuvering--four tangled arms wrapped around one another, shirts rumpled and pulled up, shoes kicked off to the side of the cot, and mussed up hair. My timing couldn't have been better. Lucky me. A front row ticket to an amateur peep show.

This "Beef" Products Inc is poisoning the food supply, and has been since 2002. I'm stunned that Americans aren't outraged, and it makes it appear that we really are a nation of apathetic fatasses--who cares what's in our food as long as it's cheap and there's a whole lot of it.
At least people got outraged in the early 1900s, which lead to the creation of the FDA and the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act under Theodore Roosevelt.
I fear we don't have the citizenry or the leadership to respond to this stuff any more, which is likely why we are seeing more serious illness and death caused by food-borne pathogens and now even ammonia.

I'm wondering what the hell they put in tofu and those TVP crumbles. My husband and kids are definitely omnivores, so getting them to go totally veggie won't be easy or possible.
I'll start slowly, with the TVP/tofu crumbles and see what I can do.
I do order our meat from a local co-op that is small farmers/grass fed, etc when I can. It's just hard, because the vast majority of people buy this crap "beef" and then invite us over for dinner, etc.
You feel bad refusing to go over to somebody's place for burgers, but, sorry....my kids aren't allowed to eat this crap. And I don't want it.

It's only a concern if you have issues with the car's cooling system. I had a '91 Chevy with a plugged radiator. If you ran the A/C while you were driving less than about 20 mph, it would heat up real badly because of the extra load on the engine. If the cooling system's okay, though, shouldn't be anything wrong with it.

IBP in dakota city pays a pretty decent wage for crappy work but no one wants to work there. They used to arrange work visa's and transportation down on the Mexico border to bring people in to staff the facility. They'd get a work visa, transportation, and even housing just to work in Dakota City. It was a good deal for everyone involved.
I was told the stench was from incinerating the blood and byproducts they weren't allowed to use. They used to put that stuff into animal feed but those rules changed a long while ago, now they incinerate all of it. NASTY! My in-laws don't live too far out and the last time I visited I was shocked at how bad the smell. Remembering the smell wasn't nearly as bad as the actual stench.

Yep. So, instead of tackling actual threats to the public like "Beef Products Inc" and the routine use of antibiotics in animal feed, both parties will scream slogans at each other, with the only apparent goal being to stay in power for personal enrichment.
It's depressing, because there are problems out there that wouldn't be that difficult to fix. Bill Clinton did favors for his buddies at Tyson by slashing the number of USDA inspectors and letting them start using antibiotics in their factory farms in all feed...that could be stopped tomorrow. And more USDA inspectors could be quickly and easily trained and deployed.
But I'm going to have to hear about random bullshit and listen to screeched personal attacks, and nothing will be done about real problems.

Today I learned all about the pallet jack. It's amazing how much weight that thing can lift, just from a simple pumping of the handle. It's amazing how a pallet full of furniture glides along with almost no effort from me, rolling on the pallet jack. It's amazing how fucking hard it is to stop 500 pounds of furniture from gliding effortlessly into other coworkers if you are the only thing between the amazing pallet jack and the rest of the crew... my bad.
Today we learn all about the amazing commercial sized trash compactor.
I think they had better put you behind a cash register where you can't do anymore damage :))

I was thinking more along the lines of retail stores. Some places, like gas stations, would lose too much business if they closed. It bothers me that these massive retail chains feel it necessary to make their people work on a holiday instead of taking care of their employees one or two days out of the year. Mine too..... we had both the man-powered style and the electric ones. I would always claim something was wrong with the manual one, and have to wait to the use the electric one to set pop(or soda to some) and beer displays. The only bad thing about it, was if the handle went to vertical it stopped dead in its tracks......learned that the hard way, one time and one time only.

My spouse and I went out for Chinese on christmas a couple years ago because we knew it would be open, no place else was. This year almost every restaurant down the strip was open along with the national retail chains except target.

Eh, humans are omivores evolutionarily. That's why we have such interesting teeth--canines and molars. If the animals are raised the way my dad's ancestors raised them (actually wandering around in fields, and not kept for weeks on filthy, overcrowded "feed lots," etc) I'm not philosophically opposed to it.
The modern factory farm is a nightmare on many levels, one of which, of course, is the torment of the animals.
There are huge expanses of the West that can't produce anything other than beef. Darned good beef also. I agree with you about feed lots tho.

So they have the breathless Wolf Blitzer calling every fart in the wind a 'breaking point' for the Obama administration. MSNBC isn't much better.

MILLVILLE _ A 61-year-old local woman was jailed Saturday on a charge of eluding police and $10,000 bail, a case that started with Dorothy Verna Plummer allegedly flashing an obscene hand gesture.A police report issued Monday said the incident started at 12:21 p.m. in a parking lot in front of Ashley Furniture store on North High and Albertson Streets when Plummer circled two police cruisers in her vehicle, “sticking her middle finger up at us and dancing.”
Plummer, a resident of East Oak Street, then went to the Burger King drive through. Police waited for her to come out but she made it to North 2nd Street and headed south toward the center of the city.
Finally, her path was blocked when she pulled up behind a civilian vehicle and three officers approached her.
“As we arrived at Dorothy’s car, we observed her radio playing extremely loud,” Officer David Andro reported. “As we asked her to roll down her windows, Dorothy then turned up her music and began dancing, totally ignoring our request.”
Plummer eventually was removed and the car towed.

PRESIDENT OBAMA is a great admirer of the Mayo Clinic. Time and again he has extolled it as an outstanding model of health care excellence and efficiency.
So perhaps the president will give some thought to the clinic’s recent decision to stop accepting Medicare payments at its primary care facility in Glendale, Ariz. More than 3,000 patients will have to start paying cash if they wish to continue being seen by doctors at the clinic; those unable or unwilling to do so must look for new physicians.

Wind turbines have a sweet spot of speeds that they aim for - they work best in a narrow range. If there's too much or too little wind, they don't work all that well (or at all). There's also an issue of demand. The wind turbines aren't going to be needed if other more reliable and stable power sources are providing power.

there are peole here that see a .5% drop in unemployment as a sign of recovery...ant that the markets are trying to muscle their way up, and have, but to who's benefit...the feds have missed every swing they take at the economy...deficit spending, lowered production, unfunded state mandates across the country, failing infrastructure...I think the worst is yet to come and the donks are leading the way....our energy problems are not even problems yet...when the economy ramps up where is cheap energy going to come from?...we are no better of than 20yrs ago....

Ahmadinejad-like challenges to Israel's basic right to exist are beneath comment. By contrast, Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon were merely patched together by treaty bureaucrats at around the same time—hardly a global imprimatur.
Don't simply parry, in other words; thrust as well. Strike preemptively for hearts and minds. Develop long-term strategies. Lay the groundwork for future challenges so that you've got camera-ready allies in high places, and the Larry Kings of the world are gradually and subtly "educated" in how to respond to obvious misstatements of fact. Plan and organize a lot more tours and private briefings for journalists and think tanks—the kind that Jewish groups and U.S. senators and congressmen now routinely get, to great effect. Embed foreign journalists and others in more operations. Take the doubters down into the archeological tunnels well below the Arab neighborhoods of East Jerusalem to show people, again and again, that the Jews were at the Western Wall first. The tech is there, but the NIMBYism is omnipresent, and municipalities are taking to zoning rules to limit/prohibit their installation on any number of grounds (noise, setbacks, proximity to schools/residences, etc.) Also, not all parts of the country are where wind blows consistently to make it feasible. The situation is even more limiting for solar - there's some parts of the country where solar would have a more profound effect than others, based on distance to equator, prevailing weather patterns, etc.

Honest Reporting has the Dishonest Reporter Award for 2009, but it has so much more - a what's what of media bias, lies, anti-Semitism, blood libels and more that are hurled against Israel on a daily basis.
Israel needs to do way better at the information war. It needs to detach the reason Israel exists to the holocaust, and attach it to Jewish history in Israel. The holocaust underlines why a Jewish state is necessary, but not the cause of its creation.

Well-built, low cost cars were a hit with the public? Who'da thunk it? Of course, The Big Three were too involved with administering pensions and benefits to pay much attention to building cars...

Sorry, had to step away for a bit. I've yet to master discipline to inform lizards when that happens. Making adjustments though.
My friend built a home in Mexico and live there year round. Currently they're having second thoughts because in summer they get very lonely as the snowbirds return north.

It's almost like owning a thousand acres in Wyoming. And it is great being the only driver on a six lane highway at 5:30 PM :))

I was a corporate trainer for Chili's. Opened the one in Pt. Charolette. I remember when Chili's in Venice went up. There was nothing there.

I had a 69 Camaro, not Z28 in 1979. Four speed, red with black stripes.
Fun car. Wish I still had it. I always wondered why GM screwed them up so much when the re-release them. Why didn't they make the car more like a retro and re-do the styling less? I think it would have gone over better. Oh well.
