Ryan Mauro and the Christian Action Network

Blogosphere • Views: 12,146

Ryan Mauro claims that I called him a racist — I didn’t — and posts yet another one of those straw man attacks for which the right wing has become infamous: Darnit! Charles Johnson Catches Me Being a Racist! Whatever Shall I Do?

Oddly, he includes no link to LGF in his post. And he makes sure no one can accuse him of racism by including an animated picture of a black child with the caption “That’s racist!” Oooohkay.

Y’know, I’m really glad that Charles Johnson of littlegreenfootballs.com let me know I was a racist, because if I don’t fix that soon, it’s going to cause me major social problems.

No, I did not let him know any such thing; in fact, Mauro quotes what I said in the Bloggingheads interview, about his PJ Media article on the John Birch Society at CPAC, and refutes his own straw man argument:

“… [the article] wasn’t based on the fact that John Birch Society was an illegitimate group, or a racist group, which they are. The criticism was based on allowing them to attend was politically not very smart. So it wasn’t based on principle, it was based on politics.”

Obviously, I didn’t accuse Mauro of being a “racist,” I said he objected to the John Birch Society on grounds of political expediency, not principle.

Then, Mauro proceeds to admit the political agenda of CPAC was the main focus of his article. And just for that extra right wing emotional goodness, he concludes with a silly shot at the shirt I wore in the Bloggingheads video. Now that’s how to win an argument.

Mr. Johnson, you should be ashamed of himself [sic] for implying I was indifferent or somehow supportive of racism. And next time you’re doing an Internet show, don’t wear a shirt that looks like one of those giant lollipops I used to try to win at the fair.

Sorry my shirt brought up such a bad memory for you, Mr. Mauro. Next time I’ll wear my purple hibiscus aloha shirt; maybe that will remind you of something more pleasant.

Or maybe the color purple will invoke other kinds of associations.

Since you’re listed at PJ Media as “national security researcher for the Christian Action Network,” perhaps you’d like to defend these statements made by the founder of CAN, Martin Mawyer?

Martin Mawyer, longtime editor of Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority Report, founded the Christian Action Network (CAN) in 1990, a year after Falwell folded the original Moral Majority.

In his “dirty and dangerous” battle against “militant homosexual groups,” Mawyer has not held back. In 1997, after Ellen Degeneres came out as a lesbian on her TV sitcom, Mawyer accused her of “DUMPING HER FILTHY LESBIAN LIFESTYLE RIGHT IN THE CENTER OF YOUR LIVING ROOM!! … If we allow the tidal wave of gay and lesbian smut to continue to pour into our homes, it will utterly consume us in no time at all!”

In 1999, he asked the Federal Communications Commission to put an “HC [homosexual conduct] warning label” on TV programs with gay characters. The following year, CAN caused a national stir when TV stations refused to air its inflammatory ad attacking Hillary Clinton, who was then running for U.S. Senate.

Over ominous drumbeats, the narrator intoned: “It is rumored that Hillary Clinton is a lesbian. It is rumored that Hillary Clinton supported homosexual marriage. It is rumored that Hillary Clinton will leave her husband upon taking office. … Sometimes, rumors are true. Shouldn’t you know the truth? For more information on traditional family values, please contact the Christian Action Network.”

More recently, CAN protested “Gay Days” at Disney World and other theme parks — events that Mawyer’s wife and CAN partner, Bonnie, says demonstrate “the true intent of these homosexuals: they are after our children!!”

A 2000 Mawyer mailing incorporated militia-like paranoia: “I am not ready to give this great nation over to one-world government extremists … radical, disease-carrying homosexuals … anti-family lesbian feminists … or anti-American U.N. globalists!”

CAN activists today are familiar faces at Gay Days, videotaping “bad behavior.” In 2003, CAN turned its footage of “homosexual kissing, hugging and fondling” into a video tour of the Southeast, warning parents about the perils of Gay Days and warning that “homosexuals live in a pattern of sin and debauchery.”

Or perhaps you’d like to defend the Christian Action Network’s association with the BNP-connected English Defense League, as documented in this LGF post?

It’s more than a little ironic that Mauro is complaining he’s being accused of racism, when he works for an openly extremist, virulently anti-gay religious right organization like the Christian Action Network that’s been linked to neo-fascist groups in the UK.

The thing I think that gets these other bloggers into so much trouble up against Charles is that they have no restraint. They knee-jerk at every opportunity, make wild claims, and go full-out.

Charles actually generally doesn't hit someone with everything he has at once. He measures it out. So when these infantile bloggers start screaming in irritation, he can say, "oh, you thought that was bad? I was giving you a chance at dignity, jerkwad" and continue to let them have it.

It's pretty nifty.

Oh, and what Charles says is true, also. That helps.

4 rurality  Wed, Jan 6, 2010 9:10:29am

watching the Bloggingheads video, I thought the contrast between the 'debate' styles was pretty telling. Charles actually thought before he spoke and seemed to care about the accuracy of his statements--or fielding the hyperbolic responses of Conn. Conn seemed to listen smugly, waiting for a buzz word to jump on and inflate to a alarmist generalization. The pro suicide take on Charles' response to a lame question about the epidemic of euthanasia (one state) was shameful. What happened to shame, anyway?

I think 'knee-jerk' is really apt. The idea of standing against the corruption in the movement is deeply frightening to them, so they react with reflexive hostility.

Well, when you need to show a little of that old razzle dazzle to get attention, class goes right out the window... reasoned responses and fact-based analyses go right out the window in favor of the blowhard of the day.

Sort of OT. I'm kinda of amazed at some responses in another thread to the retirement of Dodd and Dorgin. Lots of folks here have talked about the GOP being a mess, off the cliff, insane, etc. But, then you read comments hoping that the electorate in these states will see the light and come back to the GOP. I get that these elections translate to numbers in Congress, but until the GOP cleans house, why would you want to give any more power to this group?

Where on Earth does this young man (he's only 21 years old) get that Charles called him a racist? The point was that he criticized the JBS on politics alone and not based on principle. The reasoning behind being against the JBS was barely touched upon by Charles. If one says "you did not point out the racist elements within the JBS" that does not mean "you are a racist."

Furthermore, besides posting that questionable GIF he also captions it with this sophomoric blurb, "Charles Johnson brands me with the ‘R’ word. And it isn’t ripped, even though I totally am." With his immaturity already in full light we later find this fractured piece of grammar, "...Mr. Johnson, you should be ashamed of himself..." Sure enough Ryan Mauro, you should be ashamed of himself.

Egyptian soldier killed in clash at Gaza border

The violence broke out as hundreds of Palestinians began throwing stones across the border at Egyptian security forces, who fired back at the protesters.

The Islamic movement Hamas, which controls Gaza, had called the demonstration over the convoy.

But Hamas police later fired into the air to disperse the crowd, witnesses said.

The Egyptian soldier was apparently killed by gunfire from the Gazan side.

College Bans Certain Head Coverings

BOSTON (AP) -- A Massachusetts pharmacy college instituted a ban on clothing that obscures the face, including face veils and burqas, weeks after a Muslim alumnus who is also the son of a professor was charged with plotting terror strikes.

The policy change at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Services, announced in a campus-wide e-mail last month, went into effect Friday.

Michael Ratty, a college spokesman, said the policy was developed in the fall during the school's annual review of its public safety procedures and was unrelated to the arrest of 2008 graduate Tarek Mehanna.

''It is not directed to any group or individual. It applies to all students and faculty,'' Ratty said.

JBS’ current material, at least what I’ve seen, is not racist in any way.

If Ryan is any kind of terror analyst worth his salt he knows that extreme groups often rebrand and change image to fit the season. This is also true of JBS. Just because they cleaned up there sites during this last year doesn't mean the crap wasn't out there and it sure doesn't mean that they've changed at all.

/

Something of an elder statesman in the white separatist movement, Metzger, 71, is a former John Birch Society member and former Klansman who made inroads into the skinhead movement. The Southern Poverty Law Center sued Metzger and his son, John, in connection with the beating death of an Ethiopian college student by skinheads in Portland, Ore., in 1988. The SPLC argued that the Metzgers should be found liable for intentionally inciting the skinheads to engage in violent confrontations with minorities. In October 1990, a jury returned a $12.5 million verdict against the Metzgers and WAR, with Metzger personally responsible for $5.5 million. He now advocates a “lone wolf” philosophy, maintaining that individuals acting alone or in small cells are the best hope for achieving a white revolution.

A founder of the Tea Party movement said Wednesday he had a warning for Republican leaders: Back conservative candidates or else other states will suffer the same backlash that toppled Florida's Republican Party chairman this week.

"We are turning our guns on anyone who doesn't support constitutional conservative candidates," said Dale Robertson, who operates TeaParty.org out of Houston and helped start the movement nearly two years ago. [...]

Mr. Robertson planned to deliver the warning in a phone call Wednesday to National Republican Committee Chairman Michael S. Steele, who a day earlier said he supported the Tea Party activists and that he didn't think their movement had caused a schism in the Republican Party.

Wtax 1240 am is airing the Andy Martin (Anthony Martin Trigona) sp? ads where he accuses an opponent of being teh gay via hearsay from another primary opponent (Jack Roesser) sp?.
Andy is a longtime known pile of steaming fecal matter IMHO, but it looks like he's out-fecaled himself.

I think we had a thread on that a while ago. Dreadful ad.

"We are turning our guns on..."

Somehow that sounded more like a figure of speech before people started showing up to rallies with their guns.

Just a thought.

Yeah, that doesn't sound good.

here's a news note .... Egypt and hamas exchange fire at gaza border ... one Egyptian soldier was killed ...

I wonder if Mubarak is preparing to open a can of whoop ass on hamas?

Accused U.S. Holocaust museum shooter James Von Brunn dies in prison hospital, AP reports (no link but at MSNBC.com banner). He murdered a security guard, Stephen Johns, who saved the lives of countless others in returning fire at Brunn.

The media never could quite figure out that Brunn was a full blown wackaloon who was into anti-Semitism, Holocaust denial, white supremacy, and anti-Christian, among his pet conspiracies. He collected 'em.

Hamas is busy trying to set up another conflict with Egypt like they did in 2007/2008 when they blew up the border fence between Egypt and Gaza. It's manufactured outrage, conflict, and is meant for Hamas to continue controlling Gaza. It's so much easier to blame others for their predicament than to take responsibility for the fact that Hamas has run Gaza into the ground and ground it up into a pulverized mess.

And if they wanted to attack an Arab state really responsible for their problems, Syria ought to be the direct they attack in, not Egypt.

When I say my prayers for the end of the mullah/thugocracy in iran, I am also praying for the end of hamas, hezbollah, etc. Without iran as sponsor, those groups become far less threatening.

That was the plan from the beginning. Running Gaza into the ground, that is. Mission accomplished.

I think everyone may just be blowing off steam, now that Code Pink has gone home.

On a related note, it appears that the great ammunition buying frenzy that started with Obama's election has finally run its course, 14 months and 10 billion rounds later. Hoarders might finally have realized that the Big O is not going to send his ACORN Obammunist militia door to door to confiscate firearms, or maybe they've just run out of storage space or money or both. Supplies are good at most retailers, but with a significant jump in prices from a year and a half ago.

re: #80 Obdicut

No direct border link with Syria, and Egypt hasn't let through the kinds of materials that Hamas wants for Gaza. Hamas thugs are feted in Damascus, and only barely tolerated in Egypt, which is trying to make a deal to secure the release of Shalit.

Egypt wants nothing to do with Gaza, which has been its position since the days of Camp David (they refused to take it as part of the return of Sinai). Can't say I'd blame Egypt either. No one wants to deal with that radicalized mess.

re: #86 lawhawk

Yeah, as far as Hamas goes, Egypt is the enemy. As far as the Palestinian people themselves go, Hamas is the enemy.

Ryan Mauro claims that I called him a racist — I didn’t — and posts yet another one of those straw man attacks for which the right wing has become infamous

I'm noticing a pattern here. AllahPundit responded (tweeted) with the same strawman to your last Hot Air Comments of the day:

Allah Pundit:
@Thatcher Turns out I'm a racist hater. I'm always the last to know

I guess they both see, "OMG, he's playing the Race Card against me!" as a particularly effective strawman argument given their audience.

Yes, this kind of tactic plays well with their race-obsessed audience, who rant about being labeled "racists" at the same time as they defend or ignore openly racist comments.
