Here’s an open thread for Wednesday afternoon — with a note about the 2009 Idiotarian Award (the “Fiskie”).

This year we will have a Fiskie Award, as usual, but without the usual poll — because there’s one person who so clearly stands out from the crowd of idiots that I’ve decided to dispense with the poll. You may be able to guess who it is, but we’ll make it official and announce the winner tomorrow morning…

Bret Taylor and some friends rode their bicycles across the USA. Bret took a photo every 5 miles. Then set them to music.

It's a big damn country. Go see it.

Pretty sure that if not him, it's the one and only RSM.

Oh noes!

Teh templates iz broken!

Something happened to my web templates, and when I apply them to new pages all the formatting is gone, the sidebars just pile up on top of each other.

OH NOES!

It was working yesterday, but the automatic update wasn't working. Then I fooled around with some of the settings, but not the code, but something broke.

Shit, I might have to redo all the templates. Two weeks of work, all down the toilet.

Personally, I'd much rather see him win in a landslide vote than be appointed to the position. The outcome would be the same, but it would be more satisfying if he also broke records for highest winning margin, most total votes, and so on.

Well again, I think that depends. If you are running as "pro-family" whilst having an affair, what your wife or husband thinks is relevant. If your spouse is introducing you at every townhall event you're at, I think it's fair game.
As I recall, people were discussing Obama's grandparents and parents, as they were very much part of his own narrative.

I think he's arguing that if there's anything inherently hypocritical or double talky about what you advocate that can be viewed through the lens of your family it's fair to point it out, so long as you focus on how the child's situation don't mesh with the politician's actions.

For example it'd be reasonable to point out if Obama said that the US' Public Education system provides the best possible education for young people in the US and then sent his kids to a private school, it'd be okay to point out the disconnect, though not to follow the kids themselves around and ask them why they're being so eliteist...

I think if the girl's parent who is running for some governmental office, and from that office wants to promote the teaching of Abstinence only education, I think it's fair to ask them the question of "Do you still feel that this is such a good system when you haven't even been able to make it work within your family? "

That way you're only using the daughter as a springboard, as factual proof of the possibility of how the system they're advocating can go wrong. That would seem fair enough to me.

A question like "Where exactly would you say you or your daughter failed to bring about this particular situation" would seem to noticeably more crass, and thus probably should stay out of bounds.

Lets assume that refraining from sex or using birth control is 50% the responsibility of the female and 50% of the male. Is it not fair to ask why the daughter failed to look after her 50% of the issue?

In theory to have truly "safe sex" you should have both people using protection of one kind or another, but I think that's a topic for another day...

I've been following the conversation that Jamesfirecat brought up about politicians spouses and as much as I don't like it, the spouses don't have much of a right to privacy. IMO there have been far too many spouses that made money because of the politician in the family. I think that with a spouse that obviously has another occupation (like Joe Bidens wife for example) then we can check them out and turn our attention somewhere else. But if a politician has a lobbyist or something like it as a spouse then they shouldn't expect not to be checked out.

I haven't seen Avatar yet so I might be slightly Biased, but from what I've read I think trying to sell it as a left wing propaganda piece is about as much of a stretch on trying to convince people that Terminator is Cameron's way of saying that the Luddites were right....

Ok, so this is an Open Thread, right?

I just watched "Avatar" (like many others), but now I don't want to talk about movie itself, but abut the reaction about this in rightosphere, espetially how it is denounced as "anti-american", "anti humanity" flick (WND). Toto from PJM's didn't liked putting what he called "an immature Iraq War meme" in it.

True, Hollywood is liberal, and Cameron' movie have some pro-environmentalist and anti-exploitation message, meantime being an incredible spectacle. Is really politics a leading theme in it? Discuss.

(BTW: it's silly, but many bloggers had missed the fact, that villainous human troopers are not US Marines, but private contractors)

Discussing the politics of Avatar seems to me to be about as fruitful as discussing the politics of World of Warcraft. These kooks always lose their marbles over incredibly popular media, like Wall-E, or Harry Potter. Pretty funny stuff!

Actually, the shallowness and stereotyping present in the film were mentioned by a reviewer for NPR. It isn't confined to the "rightosphere."

But that's what you get with Cameron - a two and a half hour film, with 5 minutes or less worth of backstory, character development and plot. Anything that gets in the way of moving the action forward gets left in the dust, painted with a brush a mile wide but only an inch deep.

It doesn't detract from the movie as far as I could tell. It's hugely entertaining and visually gorgeous. I enjoyed it.

It's complicated. I would like to see a pregnant teenager, and her partner, assuming he is of reasonable age, left as much alone as possible. However, when you start to play 'Christian family values and honest rural folks', it becomes a more dicey issue. My key criticism of Palin's dealing with her daughter's pregnancy was the announcement that the kids were getting married, and the parading of Levi in front of the country.

Of course current politics is an important theme in Avatar, but so what? Many science fiction movies/television series make political points. For example, Star Trek (Original series, TNG, DS9, etc.) also had many episodes that made a political point that resonated with its intended audience. Frankly, Avatar's politics hits close to home for many people, and as long it sells tickets, that can't be an altogether bad thing.

Star Trek's entire premise was a political point. We accept Chekov, Sulu and Uhura now implicitly as the BRIDGE OF THE ENTERPRISE, but at the time, it was controversial stuff. A Russian? Whut? Michelle Nichols was actually contacted by Mlk Jr. about her role on the show, when she was considering leaving.

A big budget flick like this is planned and marketed with an international audience in mind. If it will draw more money by appealing to non-American audiences, then that's how they'll write it. It's the globalization of the blockbuster.

251 RogueOne  Wed, Jan 6, 2010 3:51:58pm

The District Court in DC put out the Al-Bihani decision today.

[Link: www.courthousenews.com...]

The international laws of war do not limit the U.S. government's power to detain suspected terrorists or their supporters at Guantanamo Bay, the D.C. Circuit ruled in a decision meant to "narrow the legal uncertainty that clouds military detention."
......
His continued detention can't be justified, he said, because the United States' war with Afghanistan ended when the Taliban lost control of the Afghan government.
The federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., noted that all of his arguments "rely heavily on the premise that the war powers granted by the AUMF (Authorization for Use of Military Force) and other statutes are limited by the international laws of war."
"This premise is mistaken," Judge Janice Rogers Brown wrote. "The international laws of war ... have not been implemented domestically by Congress and are therefore not a source of authority for U.S. courts." She added that the laws of war are "by nature contestable and fluid," and that the president has the power to "exceed those bounds."
.....
The court also rejected al-Bihani's claim that the government needed to prove the charges against him on "clear and convincing evidence," rather than the more lenient "preponderance of evidence" standard. The government need only satisfy the lower burden in defending "a wartime detention -- where national security interests are at their zenith and the rights of the alien petitioner at their nadir," the court ruled.

Oh yeah. I admit Michael Moore can piss me off, but that is documentary, not fiction. Fiction is supposed to have all the working room to make whatever impression the writers etc decide. Funny we whine they change it for the money and we whine they change it to make political statements. Well which is it? Not a argument that cuts both ways easily.

Michael Moore makes documentaries like Menudo makes Rock and Roll.

Startrek made their episodes by the week. Serial TV can grab right from the newspaper or online news. Avatar was a decade in the making, so these are larger broad brush elements. Of course humanity as the bad guys is epic, and has been done since way back when as the cautionary tale.

Yes, and the Noble Savage stereotype is venerable, too.

The movie it reminded me most strongly of was another Cameron effort - Aliens. It has the same non-stop pacing that leaves you physically exhausted when you leave the theatre.

Well, I just filled up the pellet stove with 40 pounds of wood pellets, should warm up a bit in here soon... it's 1.2 degrees (f) outside right now, so I suspect it will actually be below zero through the night... I also have an electric heater that is practically shoved into my crouch between my legs... and the "piece de resistance" a full bed electric blanket...

We fly to Seattle for Xmas and last year we had rented a Prius...big mistake. That car is freakin' worthless in the snow. As soon as the tire starts to slip, the car cuts all power to the drive train. I had to back up and get a run at even a moderate sloping hill, then hope I didn't hit anything on my way. Had a couple of scary moments that week.

Last year was just awful. My son's truck slid into a ditch, so he locked it up and walked home. Vandals broke in and took all the stereo equipment and GPS. It was just a mess. And in the meantime I was snowed in with a sick dog. The only lucky thing is I prepare for some emergencies so had plenty of food and drink.

But I do hope you enjoyed our fine city. It's possible to have a really good time here.
