Video: A Religious Right ‘Nuclear Bomb’ in Uganda

World • Views: 3,363

Scott Lively is one of the religious right evangelists identified by the New York Times as an enabler of Uganda’s insane death penalty law for homosexuals.

Here’s a video posted by Box Turtle Bulletin with a closer look at Scott Lively’s “philosophy,” and what he described as a “nuclear bomb against the gay agenda in Uganda.”

I imagine the "gay agenda" in Uganda revolves primarily around having enough food to eat, and not getting killed by religious atavists.

Repost from the last thread, but it is as true in this one, if not more so:

I believe that the kind of bill we are seeing is exactly what these Christianists would like to put in place in the United States if they ever had the chance.
However, as Charles pointed out in his bloggingheads interview, this is part of a larger worldview, one that includes creationism, a visceral hatred of gay people, and a anti-science agenda that includes climate change denial.

These people are dangerous, and they need to be exposed. What Charles is doing is amicable and needs to be applauded.

Another aspect of the Christianist agenda that I did not mention above is their motive behind their support for Israel - namely the belief that once all Jews are in Israel once more, we will witness the second coming, during which the Jews will convert of be destroyed.

Check out the article on Christian Zionism for the basics.

Scott Lively is an evil man.

A little of what Lively believes (from BTB):

"

He regularly describes gays as being sick and “followers of the Father of Lies.” When the Watchmen On the Walls held a rally in Novosibirsk, Russia, Lively excused Satander Singh’s murder in Sacramento. Lively contends that “civilization and homosexuals” are engaged in a full-blown war, which is part of the Devil’s design to destroy civilizations:

There is a war that is going on in the world. There is a war that is waging across the entire face of the globe. It’s been waging in the United States for decades, and it’s been waging in Europe for decades. It’s a war between Christians and homosexuals. … Now, the homosexual movement has been winning this war in the United States, and it has been winning this war in Europe. And we’re looking at the future collapse of Western civilization.

Scratch LaHaye and you’ll find an honest-to-god surviving John Bircher. In the 1960s when LaHaye was a young up-and-coming Baptist preacher fresh out of Bob Jones University, he lectured on behalf of Republican Robert Welch’s John Birch Society. We are talking about a man who believed Dwight Eisenhower was an agent of the Communist Party taking orders from his brother, Milt Eisenhower. Along the way LaHaye extended his paranoid list of villains to include secular humanists who "are Satan’s agents hiding behind the Constitution." And the only way to destroy them is to destroy their cover.

Even I dismissed the allegations that American Christians were involved is this. It just seemed evil and cruel beyond belief. It does appear that they were indeed involved. I don't know how they live with themselves.

More than involved. They're the architects of the policy and its intellectual forebears.
NPR had an interview with Jeff Sharlet back in November that gives a great deal of detail about the Family and Uganda's death penalty for gays:

GROSS: Let's talk about The Family's connection to Uganda, where there's a, really a draconian anti-gay bill that has been introduced into parliament. Uganda already punishes the practice of homosexuality with life in prison. What would the new legislation do?

Mr. SHARLET: Well, the new legislation adds to this something called aggravated homosexuality. And this can include, for instance, if a gay man has sex with another man who is disabled, that's aggravated homosexuality, and that man can be - I suppose both, actually, could be put to death for this. The use of any drugs or any intoxicants in seeking gay sex - in other words, you go to a bar and you buy a guy a drink, you're subject to the death penalty if you go home and sleep together after that. What it also does is it extends this outward, so that if you know a gay person and you don't report it, that could mean - you don't report your son or daughter, you can go to prison.

And it goes further, to say that any kind of promotion of these ideas of homosexuality, including by foreigners, can result in prison terms. Talking about same sex-marriage positively can lead you to imprisonment for life. And it's really kind of a perfect case study in the export of a lot of American, largely evangelical ideas about homosexuality exported to Uganda, which then takes them to their logical end.

There is much more at that link about the financial connections between Uganda and the Family.
(All this information is also available in Charles's prior post on the subject and that comment thread.)

He's written an entire book promiting his form of holocaust revisionism blaming the Nazi party on the ghey. The Pink Swastika. I couldn't make a google cache link work, but I bet you could find us a lot of goodies.

Here's a recent writing from the evil (and paranoid) Scott Lively.

'Gays' in the Military: A Revival of The Pink Swastika?

Contact: Dr. Scott Lively

MEDIA ADVISORY, Jan. 27 /Christian Newswire/ -- "Repealing the ban on open homosexuals serving in the U.S. military would be a mistake of historic proportions." warns a Massachusetts attorney and pastor who authored a book on homosexuality in Nazi Germany. Dr. Scott Lively is co-author, along with Jewish researcher Kevin E. Abrams, of The Pink Swastika: Homosexuality in the Nazi Party.

"Certainly there would be a mass exodus of normal men from a homosexualized military," said Lively, "probably leading to the reinstatement of compulsory service. (Watch the anti-war Lefties become supporters of the draft when it's used to remedy "homophobia") And yes there would be severe morale problems for normal men forced to live as the objects of sexual interest of other men with whom they share close quarters. However, the much bigger, longer-term problem is the threat of a homosexual takeover of the military branches.

"Most people don't realize that male homosexuality does not always lean to the effeminate. Historically, male homosexuality was much more often associated with hyper-masculine warrior cults which were usually very brutal and very politically aggressive. The most recent example was in Germany. Hitler's initial power base when he launched the Nazi Party was a private homosexual military force organized and trained by a notorious pederast named Gerhard Rossbach. Rossbach's homosexual partner Ernst Roehm, who was also Hitler's partner in forming and building the Nazi Party, converted the "gay" Rossbachbund into the dreaded SA Brownshirts."

It's actually fairly common to try to link the Nazis with homosexuality. Dumb, but common.

Lively's is different from any other I've seen, though, in that he doesn't just say 'Teh Nazis were ghey!' but 'Nazism was entirely about militant butch homosexuals* advancing the homosexual agenda to destroy western civ, in league with the Devil'.

All who serve deserve nothing but praise.

Here is an article in the arch-conservative British paper the Daily Mail from July 2009, about the matter:

A gay serviceman has become the first homosexual soldier to appear on the front cover of the Armed Forces' magazine.

James Wharton, a trooper in The Household Calvary Regiment, is featured in the monthly Soldier publication.

The move to celebrate diversity in the Army comes nine years after it lifted its ban on homosexuality within the ranks.

Exactly. And that is precisely why the religious right in control of the GOP is so very crazy right now. Their demographics are shrinking. Even the younger generation of evangelicals doesn't buy their crap about gay people.
Their current frenzy is their last-ditch attempt to make America one of those backwards corners of the world. That's why the work being done by Charles and others to expose them is so very important. They need to be kept as far away from power and the mainstream discourse as possible.

A little bit off topic...

The MSNBC website has an interesting little article about a newly published study on the increasing activity of Arctic sea waves due to the increasing loss of the ice cap:

Arctic Ocean awakening as ice melts

Interesting.

However, all one has to do is check the comments for that article to get a glimpse of the net-active nutters in action:
[Link: www.newsvine.com...]

The denialists are almost all wrapped up in "God", to the point of linking to a Youtube video of Harold Camping predicting yet again about the end.

What a sorry statement on American society. Yes, I know that the nutters are drawn to articles they hate and furthermore are compulsive in their commenting, so the comments don't represent a true slice of American life, yet one wonders about the effects of people shouting about their ignorance on every rooftop. Does it indeed change the minds of others?

Unfortunately, hating gays is a part of some people's nature. For these people, it's no more drilled in by upbringing than homosexuality is caused by environment. Religion is a good piggy-back for homophobia right now, but it will always be there as one of the many dark sides of human nature.

I never heard it that way, outside of redneck country, but

C

onsiderably, in the extreme; also, without restraint. For example, They were having money problems, in spades, or Jan told him what he really thought of him, in spades. This expression alludes to spades as the highest-ranking suit in various card games, such as bridge, and transfers "highest" to other extremes. [Colloquial; 1920s]

But yeah then, we punish fornicators and adulterers every day. Just look at Gov. Sanford, or Bill Clinton, or that OK abortion law or...

Alot of this stuff is so omnipresent we don't even notice it anymore.

There's also a difference between condemning an action (adultery) or even a person, and persecuting them. Legally or otherwise.
BTW, Mandy is also one of the strongest defenders here of a woman's right to choose. You can be a Christian and a committed Christian without being one of these crazy fucks we're discussing. Like the Christian commenters here, for example.
(We probably do have some of the other sort about, lurking and planning their flounce. Not any of the religious regulars we have, though.)

I think alot of it has to do with Christianity's very age. Its mainly in decline in places where its been the state religion (or defacto state religion) for centuries. In the US (and to a lesser degree in Europe) a vast majority of people still self-describe as Christian, they just don't really practice anymore.

Regretfully concur.

The Government does not intend these things to happen, the Commission on whose report the Bill was founded did not intend these things to happen, but in legislation intention is nothing, and the letter of the law everything, and no government has the right, whether to flatter fanatics or in mere vagueness of mind, to forge an instrument of tyranny and say that it will never be used.

The problem is that Christianity is already on the decline in the US and Europe because of stuff like this. Added to Christian stances on science, marriage, divorce, abortion and sex abuse scandals have added up to a lot of problems for Christianity in general.

But in the USA religion remains amazingly popular.

Turtledove was writing one that had a lot of promise:

The Impeachment and Trial of John F. Kennedy

What if John Kennedy survived Dallas?

Historians love to speculate on this “what-if” scenario, wondering if magically the nation would have been spared the pain of Vietnam and even Watergate. They have missed the point.

If he’d gotten out of Dealey Plaza alive, John Kennedy might easily have suffered the same fate as his arch-nemesis Richard Nixon -- humiliation and removal from office.

The first couple of chapters are online and it seems to be a good read - but they have been there for three years and nothing seems to have come of the project. :(

Larkin's excellent poem ChurchGoing comes to mind, in re: that very point-- excerpt:

Once I am sure there's nothing going on
I step inside, letting the door thud shut.
Another church: matting, seats, and stone,
And little books; sprawlings of flowers, cut
For Sunday, brownish now; some brass and stuff
Up at the holy end; the small neat organ;
And a tense, musty, unignorable silence,
Brewed God knows how long. Hatless, I take off
My cycle-clips in awkward reverence.

......
Back at the door
I sign the book, donate an Irish sixpence,
Reflect the place was not worth stopping for.

Yet stop I did: in fact I often do,
And always end much at a loss like this,
Wondering what to look for; wondering, too,
When churches will fall completely out of use
What we shall turn them into, if we shall keep
A few cathedrals chronically on show,
Their parchment, plate and pyx in locked cases,
And let the rest rent-free to rain and sheep.
Shall we avoid them as unlucky places?
.........
A serious house on serious earth it is,
In whose blent air all our compulsions meet,
Are recognized, and robed as destinies.
And that much never can be obsolete,
Since someone will forever be surprising
A hunger in himself to be more serious,
And gravitating with it to this ground,
Which, he once heard, was proper to grow wise in,
If only that so many dead lie round.

Well, there are a LOT of other religions. It wouldn't be the end of the world to have Christianity disappear. It would be the end of a long tradition, though, so I don't think it's likely. Certainly not in our lifetime, or our kids lifetimes.

Not all religions are the same. Christianity can answer the question "what did they leave behind" better than most.

As before, the genius of India has taken from her aggressors
the most spiritually significant principle of their culture and
fashioned of it a new message of hope for mankind. There is in
Christianity the great doctrine that God became man in order to save
humanity by taking the burden of its sin and suffering on Himself,
here in this very world, not the next. That the starving must be fed,
the ragged clad, has been emphasized by Christianity as no other
religion has done. Charity, benevolence, and the like, no doubt have
an important place in the religions of our country as well, but there
they are are in practice circumscribed within much narrower limits,
and are only partially inspired by love of man. And to our great good
fortune, Gandhiji was able to receive this teaching of Christ in a
living way. It was fortunate that he had not to learn of Christianity
through professional experts, but should have found in Tolstoi a
teacher who realized the value of non-violence through the
multifarious experience of his own life struggles. For it was this
great gift from Europe that our country had all along been awaiting.

Gilbert Arenas suspended indefinitely

NBA commissioner David Stern indefinitely suspended Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas without pay on Wednesday.

The three-time All-Star has admitted to bringing guns into the Verizon Center locker room and is under investigation by local and federal authorities.

Stern took action the day after Arenas pointed his index fingers as if they were guns at his teammates as the Wizards huddled before a game in Philadelphia. The Wizards called his conduct "unacceptable" and said Wednesday that they supported Stern's decision.

Stern said Arenas' behavior "will ultimately result in a substantial suspension, and perhaps worse," and that the Wizards' leading scorer "is not currently fit to take the court in an NBA game."

Plaxico Burress was unavailable for comment.

Cool! I wish we had Christianity in the USA.

That's piss poor. Do you have any idea how much Christian churches in the US do to feed and cloth the poor? Your flippant statement trivializes the enormous work done by very good people across the nation.

In the Soviet era, the two were one & the same.

Atheism is variable. There is not one atheist manifesto. To say that Stalin represents all atheism is a gross generalization any more than saying Islam represents terrorism or anything else that was done under the name of Christianity.

Adding to the irony of human irrationality is that video which is hosted by an anti-Semite at Youtube that quotes Karl Marx and essentially blames Jews for the Stalinist persecution of Orthodox Christians.

The saddest thing about this : your child is safer with a homosexual than with one of these fundamentalist theocrat types. Time after time in their more extreme sects you see child sexual abuse. FLDS/Warren Jeffs, Branch Davidians, Strong City and many others come to mind. It's almost always about the wise patriarch having sex with multiple wifes and in all cases mentioned before they came of age.

Charity and religion are not mutually inclusive.

The next time I see the Bertrand Russell Society out doing flood relief work will be the first time.

Maybe our common ground can be this thought:

The visible church is all the people who get together from time to time in God's name. Anybody can find out who they are by going to look.

The invisible church is all the people God uses for hands and feet in this world. Nobody can find out who they are except God.

Think of them as two circles. The optimist says they are concentric. The cynic says they don't even touch. The realist says they occasionally overlap.

A guy has a talking dog. He brings it to a talent scout. "This dog can speak English," he claims to the unimpressed agent. "Okay, Sport," the guys says to the dog, "what’s on the top of a house?" "Roof!" the dog replies.

"Oh, come on..." the talent agent responds. "All dogs go ‘roof’."

"No, wait," the guy says. He asks the dog "what does sandpaper feel like?" "Rough!" the dog answers.

The talent agent gives a condescending blank stare. He is losing his patience.

"No, hang on," the guy says. "This one will amaze you."

He turns and asks the dog: "Who, in your opinion, was the greatest baseball player of all time?" "Ruth!" goes the dog. And the talent scout, having seen enough, boots them out of his office onto the street.

And the dog turns to the guy and says "Maybe I shoulda said DiMaggio?"

Many of you non-religious, non-gay reasonable people here on LGF have NO IDEA just how low the right wing will go to make all GLBT people out to be evil, destructive monsters.

The fact the right wing is anti-gay isn't the worst part. The danger is that they're living in their own alternate universe, where facts they don't like are simply ignored and new ones are created out of whole cloth for an audience who never questions the claims of anyone who is a Good Christian.

Because Good Christians never lie. Never.
