The Fiskie Award for 2009 Goes To: A Raving Freakazoid Nut Sandwich

Media • Views: 6,010

He spreads End Times craziness and has guests who suggest Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is the Antichrist. He constantly predicts that the end of America is imminent. He asserts that President Obama is a “racist with a deep-seated hatred of white culture.” He says President Obama is part of a decades long communist plot to destroy the country. He thinks the Rockefeller Center in Manhattan is a hotbed of commie propaganda. He promotes a book by W. Cleon Skousen, a crazed work of conspiracy theories that served as an inspiration for the John Birch Society. He interviewed a spokesman for the Birch Society, and said their ideas are “starting to make more and more sense.” He spread a conspiracy theory that the Cash for Clunkers website was part of a plot to take over your computer and confiscate everything you own. He compares Fox News to Jews during the Holocaust. He rants about the government over a backdrop of Nazi demonstrations.

And that’s just the short list.

He’s a creationist, a climate change denier, a conspiracy theorist, a demagogue — and he weeps frequently on the air, sometimes after hearing the songs of Paul Anka.

So now, without further ado, we present the winner of the coveted Idiotarian Award for 2009 — who else? — Glenn “Raving Freakazoid Nut Sandwich” Beck.

He did seem to outdo most of the others for the pure volume of Teh Stupid (tm) last year. One might even go so far as to call him the Godfather of the Right-wing Nutjob Meltdown.

The fact that he did is disturbing, and says nothing good about our polity.

Nobody else was even remotely in the running.

The Grim Weeper actually laid the groundwork for Brit Hume's proselytizing the other day. Months ago Beck began his 912 Project; and the second of his 9 Principles is "I believe in God; He is the CENTER of my life." (Thus, no atheists, agnostics or skeptical Christians need apply.)

Fox News is crossing a previously sacred line between news and religious promotion. Not a promising development.

The trouble is, Beck is not really completely crazy. He started working in radio when he was 13 years old. He's done the morning zoo radio shows. He works very hard at what he does. The trouble is that he appeals to so many people with what he knows is pure theater. People who really want to believe his theater is some sort of 'truth'. Forged but accurate.

There headline was "Obama orders CIA to divert assets from terrorists to support AGW. No wonder Fox viewers are pissed after being spoon fed BS like that.

68 Tiny Alien Kitties are Watching You  Thu, Jan 7, 2010 10:20:47am

Oh come on, he isn't that bad, everything he says makes perfect sense...well if you know nothing at all about world history anyway. Unfortunately there does seem to be a few million people who fit that description and who hang on his every illogically ranting word.

I have been known to tune in occasional just to be incensed by him, one of my guilty pleasures, but I have never yet made it through an entire show. About ten minutes in any one day is about all I can stand, the stupid farcical pandering to prejudice is just too strong for me.

He wants them to watch to make more money, they want to watch to have their daily dose of anti-reality reinforcement. It is truly a match made in heaven...or hell, take your pick.

I used to until I saw his recent appearance on the Jay Leno Show - he was so calm and subdued compared to his usual ranting self that the "yes, it's definitely an act" light bulb went off for me. If he was capable of moderating his "craziness" for a normal-people audience, that shows it's merely performance art to appeal to the crazed, paranoid, or just plain stupid true believers who watch him.

Brit Hume is just describing the version of fake Christianity that pervades America now. It's not about living a Christ-like life, it's about doing whatever you want and then scapegoating it all onto Jesus every Sunday. Say 'I believe' and get your get-put-of-hell card, advance to Go, repeat as needed. Instant rehabilitation whenever needed! Would you like fries with that?

Brit just wanted one of his heroes to play the game and rehabilitate himself so Brit can continue with his own hero worship. Brit so loved his Tiger Woods that he was willing to let his own credibility die for him...

That's quite the broad brush you paint with.

81% of Democrats now disapprove of Lieberman's job performance with only 14% approving, and he's not real popular with Republicans who disapprove of him by a 48/39 margin or with independents who do so by a 61/32 spread either. It all adds up to a 25% approval rating with 67% of his constituents giving him bad marks.

Note: Just to let you it is not that we don't believe in things like that, it is just misleading when you talk about it being billions of years old, when we all know that the world is only about 6,000 years old. So why would I pay so that you can misslead my children, your world is just a revolving(?), ours has a start and an end. God created the world. He created animals and man all in the same week. It was also Adam who named all the animals, they will do the essay 'Rock and Minerals' but it might not be 5 pages long, and about billions of years, it will be according to the Bible.

Yeah Stewart rocked at that, it's such a great bit I have it on my ipod so I can watch it anywhere in all 8 minutes of its glory....

I think the reason Stewart can do such a great job on Glenn Beck while Colbert falls short a bit is because of the different natures of their humor. Stewart is funny because he holds a mirror up to reality and says "look how crazy this is!" While Colbert is funny because he takes an already established position and runs with it till it becomes absurd. But because Glenn Beck is already full on crazy pants, how can Colbert make him look any sillier? Stewart on the other hand, can nail Glenn Beck simply by being Beck.

There are a couple of very short people in the group. We might be able to have a big Ahmadinejad head that would still be shorter than a group of taller men standing around it.

Just to be clear I was trying to suggest that for people here in the US making a "Large" puppet of the "Tiny" leader of North Korea would be difficult, I in no way was trying to make light of the horrible things that happen to North Koreans in North Korea who protest against their own government.

Better to err on the side of caution as they say.

A Manhattan man caught on video repeatedly attacking a tiny dog was arrested by cops who were horrified by the cruelty they saw on surveillance cameras.

Chris Grant, 21, is seen in the footage dragging a friend's 12-pound Pomeranian-Chihuahua mix, named Chuvi-Duvi, into the Grant Houses elevator.

He slams the dog with his foot twice, then entices the docile animal to climb up on his leg. He rubs him behind the ear and then viciously kicks him again.

I'm invariably picked out in the course of going through TSA because of the amount of camera gear I take with me on trips (currently carry a film and dslr back, 3 lenses, flash, film, CF cards, charger, mini and full size tripod). All those electronics get a closer look. It was even worse when I was still shooting primarily with film - those film canisters look something sinister, but I had a routine to make it easier on myself and the TSA - had everything in baggies for easy display and repacking.

Sometimes, they'd swab for explosives; other times they'd want to do a hand search.

What do you expect for $12 an hour? Rocket scientists? I look at the TSA agents in most airports and sometimes think, well at least they're not driving a forklift in a warehouse where they could actually hurt someone. The guy who frisked me, took my USB storage stick, and tried to look inside it to see if there was any 'bad data' inside it, for example, at SFO recently. I felt like asking him if he wanted to play with my car keys.

I completely expect them to smoke a little dope after hours.

If we wanted the TSA agents to be worth their weight in baggage, we'd implement a college degree for the job, as we do with firemen. Included would be classes in reading and math, to weed out the idiots. Then, of course, we'd have to pay them a little more, but imagine how much smoother airport security would be if there were people who could think critically when they looked at a group of passengers lined up waiting to take their shoes off.

Speaking of Brit Hume, you see O'Reilly had him on a few days later and asked him if what he did was proselytizing, giving him an opportunity to backpedal or rationalize, and he said no? It wasn't proselytizing, and repeating his assertion that Tiger needs Jesus?

So it wasn't just a simple slip of the tongue that got missed in editing. It was quite intentional and supported by Fox.

Yep! And he played the victim as well. And everyone's all surprised that he'd say such a thing. As if Brit Hume is some great example of impartial reportage.

I've been wanting to find a post I could weigh in on to celebrate my shiny new account. I think this is is the one. You see, on my site, I have a keyword. "Glenn Beck Stupid." You know, for stupidity above and beyond the call.

That leads to a LOT of stupid, but two paragraphs sum it up.

Perhaps that might make the following make more sense. It's not "crazy" to disagree about political differences. It IS crazy to lie, cheat and threaten people, particularly in ways that show that you are completely unable to foresee the possibility of being caught, or what that will do to your cause.

Now, when you are confronted with a crazy person, realize that you simply cannot deal with them as if you were dealing with a rational, predictable person with a sense of right and wrong. At the same time, you cannot simply crotchpunch them. I know, it seems wrong to me too, but there it is; for some reason, only the police get to crotchpunch disagreeable people.

Both Beck and Coulter are nothing but performance artists, getting rich on their false premises. Beck is the most obvious with his uncanny Howard Beale impression. The lowest common denominator "news" audience have no idea that they are being had while they are making a man with no scruples very, very, wealthy.
