Re: Threats

Blogosphere • Views: 3,319

The Huffington Post has a piece about James Rainey’s interview with me in the Los Angeles Times, focusing on threats I’ve received recently: Charles Johnson Got Threats After Breaking With Right, Relocated.

Some conservative readers were apparently not pleased with Johnson’s critique. In a profile of Johnson, the LA Times reports that the blogger moved into a gated community partly due to violent right-wing threats.

As I talked to Johnson in his office, an alert flashed on one of his two giant computer monitors. An angry screed targeting him on another website concluded: “I think a visit to Mr. Johnson’s home might be warranted. Anybody got his address?”

Such veiled threats are at least one reason why Johnson, 56, relocated not long ago. He remains in the Los Angeles area, but now is in a gated community.

The impression this gives is slightly misleading; a lot of people seem to be interpreting this to mean I moved because of threats I’ve received. So to clarify — that’s not really true. I did not move recently just because of receiving threats. The extra security was one factor, but not the only one; in other words, yes, I’ve received threats, but they are not the only (or even the main) reason why I live where I do.

Another point — I haven’t only gotten threats from right-wingers, either. Since Little Green Footballs began, I’ve had the privilege of being threatened by a rich panoply of unsavory humans: militant Islamists who wanted to cut my throat, neo-Nazis (in particular, Bill White, friend of white supremacist blogger Robert Stacy McCain) who tried to find my home address and post it on the web, and lots of random threats posted on blogs that were less specific.

Since Rainey’s piece mentions one of those “veiled threats” that actually appeared while he was interviewing me, here’s a link to it. The comment in question is at Ryan Mauro’s blog, at David Horowitz’s Newsreal website. It’s been posted for three days.

"Veiled" seems to be a pretty broad term. Or that particular veil is very gauzy and transparent.

Unfortunately, Charles, some of the radicals on HuffPo are actually saying that you brought these problems on yourself. One poster said that you "helped create the raging monster of the teabaggers", another called the gated community you moved to a "whites-only neocon enclave." There's a lot more nonsense, further proving that the far left and the far right are equally hateful and batshit insane.

Speaking of white supremacist. I watched this very disturbing video last night. Shouldn't have done that, had trouble sleeping afterward. But maybe in the daylight it wont look so scary...doubt it though. It is long, about 25 min, but an in depth report on these groups and how they are going after the tea party crowd, as well as returning military. Some have been candidates for political office, hiding behind innocent sounding organizations.

Stay safe Charles.

19 Political Atheist  Sat, Jan 9, 2010 11:32:52am

This is a great post for sharing with my interested friends and the lurkers. Leave it to the media to emphasize the dramatic reason to move rather than the pragmatics. On politics-"Right" and "Left" is often perceived as one or the other, which is just stupid.

It also points out how hazardous the internet really is. It provides cover for the real trolls. I mean the violent kind, not just the harsh posts kind.

People get internet / computer complacent. Kids being exposed to adult content. Social networks are being abused by sex offenders and stalkers. Threats to abortion doctors. And even non violent thinkers and bloggers like Charles Johnson along with some long time posters here. As (I hope) a former noob, I was really taken aback by that. To me that is the most disturbing part. All it takes is a well known contrary opinion.

22 ulmsey123  Sat, Jan 9, 2010 11:38:12am

Nobody loves a good argument more than I. And political argument is an important thing in our society. The issues must be discussed and passionate discussion is a healthy thing.
To abandon logic and resort to threats and perpetration of violence is simply horrific. We all have our opinions and we must respect the views of others even in the midst of debate.
I recall in 1984 I attended a Mondale rally in Paramus NJ with a friend who had not chosen a candidate to vote for yet. When an attendee asked me who I was voting for, I replied Reagan. This person proceeded to begin choking me and yelling that I wanted to destroy the world in a nuclear war. My friend was a big guy and quickly handled my assailant. (for the record, I am against destroying the world in a nuclear war)
We made a bee line for the door. It was an angry crowd to say the least.

Argument and protests are good things. But when people run out of thoughts (or never had any) and become animals, it's just ugly.

Play nice out there.

It's a handy thought to keep in mind: Pay attention to how the news media report on a situation that you are familiar with. You'll immediately note omissions, distortions, errors of fact great or small. Now just remember: they do that with the reportage on things you're not familiar with, too. Gird your brains accordingly.

Witness shows how the same causes that made a man a devoted and serious agent of communism (he was involved in espionage pre WWII, that was how devoted he was) could cause him to become a serious and devoted Christian and even cause him to turn against the cause he once embraced.

before reading Witness, I'd assumed fanatical Reds were avaricious, evil, or fundamentally stupid; they are none of these things, and it is a mistake to think they are.

Charlie Chan? ///

Kidding aside, how would you play "pretty, pretty princess" as a guy? Are you the King or the Royal Herald?

I am whatever #2 daughter tells me I am.

(The numbering of children is, believe it or not, actually a not-uncommon practice among Chinese. My boss refers to herself as "#5 daughter" when speaking of her family as a whole. My co-workers started calling my first-born "#1 daughter" the day she was born, and even though I've got but one son. they refer to him as my "#1 son". There are reasons for this - by numbering them, they create the conditions - symbolically - for a large family, since things that can be counted are without end. Hence, the underlying optimism, as they see it, of referring to your only son as your #1 son - they mean that you shall have more.)

I listed to this wonderful documentary on NPR called "My way or the FBI way." It was about this guy who slowly turned into a left-wing radical after he visited New Orleans to help reconstruction, and fell in with a militant group. It reached the point when even he began getting shocked at some of the rhetoric. He flipped and joined up with the FBI, resulting in the arrest of a young kid who was going to blow up a car at the 2008 RNC.

It was enlightening to hear someone tell the story of what led him to be a radical in the first place, and why he betrayed what was once his "cause". You should google it and give it a listen.

I suppose it's lost on that last person's quote that Arianna Huffington live in a 7 million dollar "four-bedroom, five-bathroom Italianate home" in affluent Brentwood, California. I also find it rather ironic considering where Ariana Huffington came from; when she first hit the national stage sometimes being a proponent for "family values" and now a "former right-winger." Perhaps many HuffPo readers are not aware of her history -- I remember it well.

On the topic of moves and moving - family and I are preparing to pack up the rickshaw and trot outta the big city. Found us a nice little town about 50 miles out - has everything we're looking for, nothing we don't like or can't live with, and will cost us about 1/3rd of what it does to live where we are now.

Fingers crossed, though - a coupla things still got fall into perfect alignment yet, but it's looking quite likely.

Just wanted to through my 2 cents in:

Charles,
As far as I am concerned, this is the United States and you can say whatever you like!! There is a good reason I enjoy reading and keeping up with LGF, even when I disagree with you. Unfortunately for those of us who don't keep silent--whether you have a well know web site like you, or just stand up and speak in a college setting like me, getting threatened is a very real thing. This being said (and I know, a little redundant with mentions in other postings.) the Huffington Post has a particular slant on all of their news items and the writers there play into their customers hands to make it appear as if the one side of the political spectrum they have declared enemies are the main culprit. I didn't expect anything else from them.

2 cents thrown in....and as always, thanks.

More stupidity by some on the right from another blog. There is a special election to replace Kennedy in Mass, on Jan 19th and they asked the acting guy filling the seat if he'd still vote for the health care bill if the GOP guy wins and he's still seated. He said yes, he'll support Kennedy's wishes on health care, but here's the spin on the blog.
The tread says the Dems are "won't honor the election if they lose" I always thought the elected guy had to be seated first before he has a vote. They want a protest against this refusal to give up power the day of the vote if he loses.
Am I missing something ?

If that is true, I'd love to see a link that shows it. It would seem to be a process with some formal rules. It may well be a moot point, the Dems have to lose, and delay a vote until after the 19th, and don't need 60 for passage anyway. He fucked up and he admits it. He's not pretending that he doesn't understand what racism is of that allegations of racism are meaningless. Looks like he owned up to it and apologized for giving offense. That's something you won't see from a wingnut.

OT, but nowhere else appropriate to post this.

I haven't seen any of the private threads for awhile though I could have missed them since I'm not on as often as I used to be or would like to be, so I throw it here since it appears you're around right now, Charles.

It's a suggestion about you as blog owner receiving updings for comments. When I check the top ten in my sometimes hurried trips through, you are there in many times more than half the list. Of course you have wonderful things to say, and many of us want to give you your due for having LGF here for us. Yet I also think that if we would start using the dings on the articles themselves more than at present, that would be a good thing. You get many kudos by word in the posts, so I wonder if you would remove yourself from the ability to receive dings from us in the comments. To me it's kind of like tipping a restaurant owner or the owner of a salon. Maybe I'm not up on current etiquette, but I was once taught that it's the workers alone who are tipped.

If you weren't in the running in the top ten, many of these other Lizards would have their pithy and witty comments noticed more since there could be five or six more of them on the list daily. I'm not talking about myself--funny or well-worded isn't really who I am, and I don't believe I've ever ventured anywhere near the top ten.

If I've stepped into an area that's NOMB, ignore this please, or consider it if it's something that hasn't really passed through your mind before because of things more pressing.

One of the last things I consider myself is an apologist for Harry Reid. It doesn't matter if I'm a fan or a detractor, but if he has apologized for wrongdoing, find another area to stick him. What you say may be true, Reid's racism is "different" because he apologized.

However, that he uttered the words to begin with shows, I think, what's in his mind. He simply won't make the same verbal error again; I'm not sure his mind has changed.

What I find amusing is earlier this week there was a big discussion amongst the talking heads on TV and blogs about whether the word "negro" was racist or not. I'll bet a paycheck that we'll see a lot of people switch sides on that argument.

"Negro" is no more racist than "caucasian" or "asian", imo.

However, I will say - neither caucasian nor asian can easily morph into a closely-related derogatory word, whereas "negro" can. I can understand why some folks would want to avoid "negro".

I see more of a generational mindset than any real racism. This is the kind of thing Obama spoke of in his "race speech".

That said, it is still inappropriate and I am glad he apologized unequivocally. None of the; IF I offended BS.

I'm happy as can be that he apologized unequivocally for what he said.
My question is - what sorts of stereotypes are in his mind that caused him to say what he said in the first place?

Probably the stereotype that many in his age group have. Not right but it is how and when they grew up. They have lived through a lot of change but not necessarily been a part of it. Given his age, probably in his 70s, his religion, Mormon, and being a long time Senator with virtually no African Americans, I am sure he did hold stereotypes. I hope he has learned since.

Thank you for posting this clarification. I thought the depiction that you were sufficiently concerned about threats to move was an attempt to either paint you as a conspiracy theorist or the Right, in general, as overty violent. Both of which are, obviously, way off the mark.

Once again, it's the MSM spin.
