Report: New York Times Will Put Up a Pay Wall

Media • Views: 2,606

The New York Times may be about to start charging people for online access to their articles, using a system in which readers can sample a few free articles before being required to subscribe. Apparently, they’re hoping that their bad experience with Times Select, the previous attempt to put some articles behind a pay wall that flopped (even according to some of their own columnists), won’t be duplicated with this new system.

The decision to go paid is monumental for the Times, and culminates a yearlong debate that grew contentious, people close to the talks say. In favor of a paid model were Keller and managing editor Jill Abramson. Nisenholtz and former deputy managing editor Jon Landman, who was until recently in charge of nytimes.com, advocated for a free site.

The argument for remaining free was based on the belief that nytimes.com is growing into an English-language global newspaper of record, with a vast audience — 20 million unique readers — that, Nisenholtz and others believed, would prove lucrative as web advertising matured. (The nytimes.com homepage, for example, has sold out on numerous occasions in the past year.) As other papers failed to survive the massive migration to the web, the Times would be the last man standing and emerge with even more readers. Going paid would capture more circulation revenue, but risk losing significant traffic and with it ad dollars. At an investor conference this fall, Nisenholtz alluded to this tension: “At the end of the day, if we don’t get this right, a lot of money falls out of the system.”

But with the painful declines in advertising brought on by last year’s financial crisis, the argument pushed by Keller and others — that online advertising might never grow big enough to sustain the paper’s high-cost, ambitious journalism — gained more weight. The view was that the Times needed to make the leap to some form of paid content and it needed to do it now. The trick would be to build a source of real revenue through online subscriptions while still being able to sell significant online advertising. The appeal of the metered model is that it charges high-volume readers while allowing casual browsers to sample articles for free, thus preserving some of the Times’ online reach.

The Times is trying to stave off the inevitable. They will fail, of course, and then bankruptcy looms.

Worst. Idea. Ever.

This will fail harder than the Times Select nonsense. You don't go from being a fully free site to attempting to charge your customers for access after all these years. That just doesn't work.

Nope. One of my Marketing professors would point and laugh at them over this idiocy. It's a rookie level mistake. You can't give away your product for years then expect people to pay for it later.

12 tradewind  Sun, Jan 17, 2010 8:39:45pm

I had a dead-tree subscription to the NYT for years, and when I finally decided that I didn't need the clutter any more, and could just bum it from my Dad's office, I canceled the subscription.
They kept on charging my credit card anyway, despite phone calls and emails. I literally had to cancel the card and reopen it to change the number to get them to stop it. Bank said it was the easiest way to go.

Ironic, a newspaper with left-wing columnists who complain about the for-profit insurance industry are now becoming more for-profit themselves.

News will happen whether the NYT reports it or not.

An on-line media outlet requiring users to pay for content? While everyone else just makes you wade through ads? NYT - paving the way.

Teh sadness is that their content, in many departments, is second to none. It's their lame-ass policy of All The News That Fits We Print that is laughable. The Op/Ed department hijacked the news desk long ago, and now they can't tell the diff.

re: #66 Alouette

I'm thinking that if they experiment enough they will come up with a formula that works.

People will pay for some things, but not others.

Headline news stories, wire stories, and op-eds are probably not going to carry a price in 2010 that can be sold to the online crowd. However, special services, analogous to the crossword puzzle case you site, might be a feasible product.

It has struck me how the traditional print industry totally missed the market that the likes of Apple and Google have created. Perhaps because the NYT was controlled by a closed system (family ownership legacy) they failed to realize that a new type of product was necessary.

Yeah, Murdoch is contemplating similar schemes. However Rupert has a better chance at making the model work because he has the market cornered on crazy right wing extremist journalism. Leftist media outlets are all over the place not so much on the right. Wingnuts would pay to read Beck and Palin.

Conversely, the only conservative ABC will put on the air on a regular basis is George Will, while CBS and NBC refuse outright to consider it. It's a little harder to make money when you show this kind of contempt for half your potential customers.

I actually listened to Palin's book through Audible. They had a 15% sale on any book and since the library waiting list was so long I went ahead and got it. Some people really hate her voice but I happen to think it's pleasing to the ear. I grew up in the midwest and the down home stuff is a welcome sound for me. Advertisers have always wondered if half the money they spent on media wasn't being wasted. I think it was just too difficult to measure. What we may be seeing is the new technology of the internet revealing that advertising has been overpriced for the last hundred years simply because businesses felt they had to do it. Some folks just can't deal with the idea that anyone gets anything for free, even a drink of water to keep body and soul together.

Fortunately, I think that's a very marginal attitude in America.

I watched it too. I think I was 13 at the time, so I didn't have much control over what we watched on TV.

I remember sitting through the entire show all the way to the end and being pissed off that I'd wasted two hours of my life. It was sweet vindication when I saw him take a chair to the face. At least that was more entertaining. =P

Green Berets want to punch everybody all the time. So what? There are folks in the Army that love that man because unlike the CNN cowards, he actually goes out with the Marines and Soldiers, eats what they eat, sleeps where they sleep. Yeah, he's a Hollywood type bozo. But his heart is in the right place. So why the hate? Not directed just at you--more general.

Good points. Geraldo was in tight with some of the troops of the 4th ID. When he was at the Superdome during Katrina, two such officers actually sought him out once the troops finally reached the Dome.

Your premise is already flawed. I don't hate the guy. Hating someone requires an actual emotional investment in a person and in what happens to them. Why would I have an emotional investment in Geraldo Rivera, who I have never met?

His heart might be in the right place, but his overly dramatic reporting makes me take him less than seriously. That's all.

Plus her voice is just nice to hear, and not nasal or whatever the claim against it happens to be.

I actually find her voice rage-inducing. I physically cannot stand it, it makes me cringe and turn off whatever device is broadcasting it. I hate the squeaky mannerisms, I hate the weird circular nonsense she says. (see her resignation speech) I seriously would rather listen to a jackhammer.

re: #185 YoungLibertarian92

But Sarah Palin has run a business and to me that makes her more qualified than 98% of the politicians out there.

I'm not sure what you're referring to here. She helped out in her husband's commercial fishing business from ~1989-1992. She didn't "run the business" herself. And, to her credit, I have never seen her claim to have done so. Nor have I ever seen an indication that she ran a business aside from the fishing business of her husband's that was mentioned in campaign and press bios.

Palin's early ambition was to be a sportscaster. Accordingly, after graduating, she worked as a sportscaster for KTUU-TV and KTVA-TV in Anchorage, and as a sports reporter for the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman. In 1988, she eloped with her childhood sweetheart Todd Palin, believing that her parents "couldn't afford a big white wedding." After the marriage, she helped in her husband's commercial fishing business.

Palin was a member of the Wasilla, Alaska, city council from 1992 to 1996 and the city's mayor from 1996 to 2002. After an unsuccessful campaign for lieutenant governor of Alaska in 2002, she chaired the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission from 2003 until her resignation in 2004. She was elected Governor of Alaska in November 2006.

From 1992-2009 - in other words, almost her entire adult life - she has worked in or for various government agencies. So even if she did "run her own business" prior to 1992 (and/or helped in Todd's business part-time), she apparently grew quickly sensible of the (sad) fact that sucking at the public teat was more lucrative and secure than trying to be an independent business owner in this day and age.

I subscribe to the WSJ and WSJ online. I find the price to be of great value and that the content is extremely well written and interesting. I don't really follow the newspaper financials but WSJ seems to be doing well, perhaps there is another reason why NYT is sinking.

re: #11 Lidane

Nope. One of my Marketing professors would point and laugh at them over this idiocy. It's a rookie level mistake. You can't give away your product for years then expect people to pay for it later.

True, kind of.

See: Cocaine, crack. Meth, Crystal.

They're hoping that they've got enough of their readership hooked on consuming a product a certain way that they can now charge them for that delivery method. The hardcore junkies, bloggers, mobile professionals, and similar will probably pay for web access if they can sweeten it with some extra goodies (kindle access, part of their regular newspaper subscription, etc).

I hope it works. The newspaper model is broken right now, and the Times is in the most advantageous position to fix at least their iteration of that model. If they fail, newspapers are doomed.

214 Lidanghazi  Mon, Jan 18, 2010 8:50:57am

re: #213 dugmartsch

Eh, to a point. Except that meth and crack create a physical need in the addict. I don't see the NYT having quite the same effect, even for bloggers or mobile professionals.

What the NYT has to hope for is that enough of their exclusive content is worth paying for. Do they offer enough to customers that can't be found anywhere else, and does it justify paying a subscription fee for it? If they can't offer that, then trying to charge people now simply won't work.

218 Mournie  Mon, Jan 18, 2010 1:56:47pm

In order to extract a price, the item must be deemed to have value. NYT has let their value erode over recent years. They offer nothing worth paying for at this point in time. It sounds like a last ditch effort staving off the lights going out at the old Grey Lady.

219 Dad O' Blondes  Mon, Jan 18, 2010 5:32:50pm

It is prepsterous to presume that intellectual property MUST be given away.

It is equally presposterous to presume that the public will pay for it.

Hey WindUpBird, you'll probably miss this in this dead thread, but I also think Maddow has a good voice. Don't mind it at all, though her habit of speaking while she's twisting her mouth off to the side is hugely annoying. It took me a long time to notice it, but once I did I kept catching it. Horrid. We cut our cable months ago, so I haven't seen her since.
