For a while i worked right across the street from that hallowed ground... I lost alot of friends and classmates when the towers went down - when they do actually put something there i hope it is a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives.

so do I...I want the Towers back, or something similar, powerful looking
my choice would be a memorial, but if they are going to build there it should be something more meaningful that an office building & much more secure too if you know what I mean.
I think rebuilding the towers would speak volumes to the terrorists and be the best memorial to the dead.. a big screw you to those that murdered them. That is what I would have wanted had I been in those towers... and add a floor.

that skinny needly thing just does not evoke strength...too delicate looking compared to the massive skyline around there...I want a beast of a structure
Inside, President Barack Obama met a 98-year-old Charles Raynor.
"I am just pleased to see Charlie is still eating fries at 98," Obama said as he posed for a photograph with the patron.
Greeting Shawn Hatcher, celebrating his 42nd birthday, the president proclaimed: "Nothing wrong with 42. I am 48... I am going to buy this guy's lunch."
Told the man's order was chili, Obama said: "A bowl of chili, I can afford."
Dan Riehl sez...
Oof!: Obama's Restaurant Comment, So "Camelot-ish"
...
Yeah, I guess he can afford a bowl of chili, alright. Just don't let the Mrs. spill it on her $3,000 jacket. The cleaning bill might cost you.

the site it self will forever be a target... I would have like to have seen a shorter, bunker like building as a new and secure home for the stock market & emergency command center.
I've learned a lot from you Lawhawk in my short time as a lizard, may your Blog be as successful and insightful as LGF. Congratulations and here's to many years to come of insightful bloging. Cheers!
New York City’s Freedom Tower is currently 5 stories high, and as it grows taller and taller it could take up to 45 minutes for construction workers to get to the bottom, making it impossible to go out for lunch during their half hour break.
That’s why the project’s contractors have hired sandwich maker Subway to build a restaurant at the same level as the ongoing construction. Last week, the franchise hoisted nine shipping containers alongside the tower, which will serve the construction workers with the same menu offered on street level – even the freshly baked bread.

next...a saloon for after work...call it the High Stool
Sitting in hotel lobby. Beck's on. Lots of commies and nazis keep flashing on the screen.
Not watching, but, damn dude! Lighten up!
Yeah, he's doing some special "secret" history thing tonight about all the hidden evils of communism and fascism that are hidden by our liberal public school system.
he is doing a show about che and mao today... Are we taking bets on whether he cries this afternoon... He was on Imus this morning and was actually pretty funny.

Yeah. I used to teach in public schools. We would sit around figuring out ways to teach fascism and communism and disguise it all as innocent grammar exercises.
UPDATE: Curbed has more photos of Ground Zero, including an insider look at the 1WTC/Freedom Tower construction. The 9/11 Memorials are taking shape, including the walls that will eventually comprise the waterfalls at the heart of each of the tower "footprints".
The prince met with Murdoch last week to discuss a “future potential alliance with News Corp,” and he told Charlie Rose Wednesday about his respect for the Murdoch dynasty:
ALWALEED: I met with Mr. Rupert Murdoch and Mr. James Murdoch. We are always in tough. I’m second biggest shareholder there. And no doubt that News Corp is moving on all the fronts. You’ve seen how FOX rating is skyrocketing. … James is now managing Europe and Asia. … I’ll be the first one to nominate him to be the successor of Mr. Rupert Murdoch, god forbid if something happens to him. … I have full confidence in [James], full trust in him, and he’s capable. He’s really Rupert Murdoch in the making, and he’s almost there now.
Alwaleed came to most Americans’ attention following the 9/11 terror attacks when New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani turned down a $10 million donation from Alwaleed over a controversial comment he had made about U.S. foreign policy. As Media Matters noted, several Fox News personalities criticized Alwaleed at the time. Fox News host Sean Hannity called Alwaleed’s comment an “egregious, outrageous, unfair offense.” That was before Alwaleed purchased a seven percent stake in its parent company.
Rooting yes (I am a Green Bay fan actually) thinking they have a snowman's chance in hell? not so much.
I have never seen a Colts team want revenge on a team so badly.. They are highly motivated and pissed off.. I say take the points...
unless Sanchez can score 31-41 points Sunday it's all over..
The Jets are talking trash alot.. The Colts are seething...

Seething? It may be their undoing... revenge is best served cold after all.
Hey, SFV -- from downstairs, and late, I know -- but regarding kosher turkey bacon:
I talked with our meat guy, and he knows of no one right offhand; plenty of farms that produce turkey bacon, none that possess kosher-qualified facilities or procedures -- and, unfortunately, vice versa: those that are kosher don't make the bacon.
From what I've been seeing, it seems like they know their business pretty well, and might know of a small producer somewhere. It's a really intriguing question, one that I'll idly follow up on with my contacts here as I get the opportunity.

Yeah..I don't think so...The Colts are highly motivated for Sunday...More so than a couple of years ago when they won the SB... 10-31 Colts.. Rumors from camp..They don't want to win the game..The want to destroy loud mouth Rex and the Jet they came in on..

Thanks. Have had little luck. Bagua gave me a lot of links, but none appear to be quite the item.
I'd start a business myself if I knew the first thing about meatpacking, or selling bacon.

I hope Indy crushes the jets ... I can't stand rex ryan ... he runs his mouth a lot for a guy who has never won squat ... I think Peyton will make us forget "Revis Island" right quick.
Here's what ticked me off about today's tour of the rust belt, featuring stops in Pennsylvania and Ohio to commiserate with citizens about how bad unemployment is and how important jobs are.
He once again skipped Michigan.
We lead the nation in unemployment, and have for years now. Our manufacturing base continues to shrink, and nothing is taking it's place. Over half of the graduates from our state universities leave the state when they're done with school, further draining our talent pool and making business relocation to the state even less attractive.
In Detroit, unemployment is over 30%, the adult illiteracy rate is around 50%, and the city looks like a war zone, filled with abandoned properties too decrepit to be attractive even to crack dealers.
Yet Obama has never visited Detroit. He made a couple of token stops in Grand Rapids - basically, a well-off suburb of Chicago in the far western side of the state - but has avoided the most ravaged state in the nation like it was plague infested.
We can't quite claim that distinction yet. But a little acknowledgment - and, at a minimum, a slowing of the continual bleed-off of our Federal tax dollars, ranking us around 40th in return on Federal taxes in the nation - would be appreciated.
I won't be holding my breath. We also lead the nation in idiot politicians, and no one wants to get any of that on themselves by standing too close.
There was a strong sense during the design phase of the new WTC 1 that if they really went up to 100 stories, the top 40 or so would be un-rentable. (Commercial tenants would balk at taking the risk of renting those high floors. As it is, a lot of the early leases for space in that building are government agencies like the Port Authority. In the lower floors.) That's why the current design has most of the top filled with infrastructure and such. It really has a large "false top" to look higher than it really is.
It is easy for us to want a replica of the twin towers built on principle, but real people would be the one taking the risk. Secretaries, clerks, waiters, delivery guys and all the rest. And the Port Authority would be risking billions of dollars of public money. Discretion was called for.
I used to end my morning commute by coming out of a subway stop at Broadway and John St. The North Tower filled my field of vision as I climbed the stairs. More often than not, it had a pink tinge as the rising sun hit it. It was beautiful, and I miss it every day. But rebuilding it as is would have been a sentimental and prideful mistake.

Exactly! Rex doesn't have Namaith playing Sunday.. But we have Peyton Manning..
Go Colts!

I can kinda' understand that but, isn't that also an admission that we're letting them win?
The object of my frustration is some 3000 miles away, so I can't deal with it properly and have to resort to creating a cranial shaped indentation to my desk.
Sitting in hotel lobby. Beck's on. Lots of commies and nazis keep flashing on the screen.

I was at a bar last night waiting for the power to be restored to my house and Beck was on one of the TVs there. I couldn't hear it and I couldn't read most of the CC from where I was sitting but I saw the word communism come up more times than I could count on 2 hands over the course of 5 minutes. I think he was also drawing a graph about Federal deficit spending and he had little pictures of GWB and Obama stuck up on the board too.
"Letting them win" would be renouncing your religion because they demanded it. Or your system of government. Or paying them tribute. This is more like buckling your seat belt because you know there are drunk drivers on the road.
It was a building. With some symbolic and aesthetic value (although it was harshly reviewed when it was built), yes, but a building. If you were a corporate real estate manager, whose job was to arrange your firm's office space, would you take that risk? Would you roll the dice with your firm's future, if there was a 1% chance your company could end up like Cantor Fitzgerald? I wouldn't. And that was the calculation: how many potential tenants would do that math?
Every standing building here, every American heartbeat, each and every plane, ship and church is an invitation to strike. I wish to withdraw exactly none of these "invitations". I hope he is listening. I have another invitation for him, but it's not suitable for this forum. It does bear a relation to recent comments about Trijicon though...

I was recently doing a freelance gig about a block from the Empire State Building... I was issued a survival/evacuation kit with a glow stick, face mask and some other goodies that one normally does not need in the office.
The object of my frustration Who'd I'd love to hit

You rap that to 50 cent..It's great..Try it..

Bernanke is in for a tough fight to be re-appointed.
Yeah, said he promised to do better helping the economy...you mean he is NOT doing all he can or his best now? Why? Don't know if I would have made that particular statement.
That's a shame. The measures he took in the fall of 2008 really did save us from a depression. He was the right guy for that job. Although I would like him more if he proposed a serious way to keep it from happening again. That's what drives me nuts: it seems like everyone has already forgotten how bad it nearly was, and no one wants to fix it. (Of course, the big sums the finance industry drops on Congress probably have something to do with that. And post-Citizens United, it will be way worse.)
Yeah, said he promised to do better helping the economy...you mean he is NOT doing all he can or his best now? Why? Don't know if I would have made that particular statement.
Interesting case. If you believe in the Fed system, I'd say you'll probably think he did a pretty good job, according to the mechanism at hand, in the previous disaster. If you think the Fed itself is the problem, then he instantly is a de facto loser, at truthfully no fault of his own. I'm in the camp that thinks a giant central economic planning center is the problem.
We have "shelter-in-place" supplies, too. In case there is some sort of toxic substance (dirty bomb, anthrax, etc...) outside the building that traps us indoors for an extended period.
I work with the government daily. If there's one thing I've learned, on any level of government employment, is that 1. They know their jobs aren't going anywhere 2. They're in no rush to be productive or efficient and 3. If an employee isn't being productive, they won't fire them- they'll merely hire 2 more people to do the job that 1 person should do.
Just finished scanning what is on Tonight.. I see Brokeback Mountain is playing..When Mom was sick I asked her what movie she wanted to watch..And of course it was Brokeback Mountain cause she heard about it..
I have never been so embarrassed in my whole life...Never watch that movie with your mom..The sex in the pup tent scene was uncomfortably silent in the room ...* More popcorn mom?*

It's insane.
Second that.
I had a project recently where a state agency wanted some information and they always give you a 30-day deadline to respond. We responded in April 2009 and just got their response in December, eight months later.
I agree, but I just could not live that level of fear. I would not allow myself to do it. I enjoy enjoying life, and not always looking over my shoulder, but again, that is just me.
Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) came out against Ben Bernanke today. That's clue number one. Considering who would be in charge of replacing him I think our best option is to keep him on board.
no, not fear, reality . shit happens... you have a flashlight in you home don't you?
We not only have a flashlight in every room, but we have heavy duty work gloves, an extra set of clothing & shoes for the both of us at the foot of our bed and enough canned foods and waterproof matches to supply our apt bldg for a week. It's earthquake country here.
Not only that, but the Los Angeles City Council went to such extremes as to warn us citizens a year after 9/11 that we are prime targets for terrorism and to be ready anytime for an attack. Had more than a few people rushing to the store to stock up, causing a mild shortage on batteries, water and foodstuffs for a few weeks. That was fun.//
OT, but a very good post from the Mayor of San Diego, who just testified in the gay marriage case in CA.
It's the Huffington Post, but I hope some will click and read
My eyes were opened in 2007, when I had to decide whether to support a ban on same-sex marriage in my capacity as mayor of San Diego. Through conversations with friends and supporters, I realized that my position was inconsistent with one of my core principles as a police officer and as mayor, which is that every community deserves to be treated with equal dignity and respect.

Ron Paul has some wacked ideas...but his economic ideas are usually very, very good. I don't understand the disdain for him on this board, beyond calling him a "wing nut" which is patently false as he's held these economic ideas his entire life.

If your Mom is anything like mine... You poor thing! Mine would have screeched and run out of the room then blamed me for not warning her about the content. Parents...sigh...
Just got an e-mail from a local theatre that i've donated too and have gone to plays/ concerts at for a few years
They're asking for a washing machine!
Hmmm,,, could just be the final push Mrs. SATTY needs to go get that new Washer/Dryer combo I've wanted
All my shit has to go into storage cause I'm moving to Singapore...I'm stressing a little about it..Park my car at Dad's house in Napa Valley and move to the other side of the world...I'm nervous and it's a great adventure. I'm making a list

Ok, that's dumb. But I wouldn't argue that moving towards it a little would be harmful. The alternative is to keep moving more and more into severely inflated currency and the devaluation of the dollar.
And he's spoken on many, many more topics than that.

So it is possible to be a wingnut your whole life..Who would have thunk it?

How about doing some research on him on this blog? There is plenty of material here.

See, I don't get that. He is at huge odds with the many idiots who ran in the Republican primaries...in fact he tore the idiot Guliani a new a-hole in the debate. So are now labeling 90% of conservatives as "wing nuts" who don't fit the extreme moderate Republican mold?
Just popping on for a quick comment before I leave to play chess (nerd alert!)
Being relatively new, I really support this idea Charles. While getting to know people around here, I have found some of their fine blogs I would not have noticed otherwise.
It would be great to have the occasional "lizard blog of the week/month" to feature all the good shit out there (and would probably be especially useful when you yourself are cramped for time.) Just a thought.
TK, your downy head is not even dry here yet... listen to the old lizards, read what Mandy linked for you.
I did. But I'm not an impulsive, impressionable person. While I respect Charles and what he says, I'm not going to suddenly reshuffle everything I think because of a few blog posts.
Keep in mind I'm speaking specifically economically here...not about what nutjobs choose to follow him.

Ron Paul debated? Sounded more like a comedy routine.

It's a 3 year gig..I'm excited and I am absolutely terrified...I'm going to haul everything I own back Home to California ( Cause I ain't never coming back to Indiana ) Then fly and live on the other side of the World with Winston..( If the Gov't accepts him..Lot of paperwork for taking animals to Singapore)

Actually, Luap Nor follows nutjobs himself. His views on economics are strongly influenced by this
Griffin, G. Edward. The Creature from Jekyll Island: A Second Look at the Federal Reserve, 4th ed. Westlake Village, Calif.: American Media, 2002.
which is written by a Bircher and is a filthy, Jew-hating, piece of propaganda. It's on Paul's recommended reading list.

Definatly nice! Since I live in L.A. I'll say break a leg!
not by everyone... but Ron Paul is not really well excepted here.
Lot's of Ron Paul fans in Indiana.. lot's of bumper stickers on trucks..

No, but refusing to look at facts suggested to you, then suggesting Charles is brainwashing the Lizards will not win you any points.
Uh, I didn't say that. And I came here, as a conservative, AFTER I saw Charles' post on breaking from the right. I'm fairly sure I wouldn't become a participating member here if I thought the host blogger was brainwashing the members.

When you first started talking about that gig, I thought it was for three weeks. Three years will be an experience. How does Mrs. Hoopster feel about it?
Yeah, said he promised to do better helping the economy...you mean he is NOT doing all he can or his best now? Why? Don't know if I would have made that particular statement.
Possibly because he is an idiot? That works for me. The guy is a disaster.
I've lived in several. Right now I'm living in another one. You ask the devout locals about our Representative and their eyes glaze over in admiration for her political orthodoxy. The GOP doesn't even bother. The DNC also doesn't bother since she's a lifer.
It's getting worser and worser - or maybe it's really the same old-same old.
Michelle Malkin is alarmed about John McCain running for office, Sarah Palin supporting him, McCain's support for various candidates. She starts off with this:
Conservatives have worked hard over the past year to rebuild after Big Government Republican John McCain’s defeat. But McCain isn’t going gently into that good night.
What that means is that tea-party leaders and religious fundamentalists have worked hard over the past year to kick out of the party anyone they deem a RINO.
She continues (and the bold is my bolding of phrases I found interesting):
The question isn’t why Sarah Palin is helping John McCain. The question is: What are you doing to stop him from cementing his Big Government Republican legacy?
. . .
And pay attention to the hidden, more troubling irony: While he runs to the right to protect his seat, McCain’s political machine is working across the country to install liberal and establishment Republicans to secure his legacy.
In Florida, McCain’s Country First Political Action Committee is supporting the Senate bid of fellow illegal alien amnesty supporter and global warming alarmist, GOP Gov. Charlie Crist, whose crucial 2008 primary endorsement rescued McCain from disaster. Grass-roots conservatives support former GOP statehouse leader Marco Rubio – who is hitting Crist hard for lying to voters about his embrace of President Obama’s pork-laden, fraud-ridden stimulus package.
In Colorado, McCain and his meddlers infuriated the state party by anointing former lieutenant governor Jane Norton to challenge endangered Democrat Sen. Michael Bennet. She’s a milquetoast public official who has served on a lot of task forces and GOP clubs – and who happens to be the sister-in-law of big Beltway insider Charlie Black. An estimated 40 percent of her coffers are filled with out-of-state money (and much of that is flowing from the Beltway) (REINE'S NOTE: But out-of-state tea party money flowing into a candidate's coffers is OK?)
She's speaking against reasonable and moderate Republicans in favor of creationist hard-right candidates.
Pop the Champagne! Excellent news! You think he'll be okay?
They didn't give his condition, only that he's alive, then stated something about someone getting pulled out 12 days (alive) from a different quake in the past
No, I'm not. I'm merely saying that a list of blog entries isn't going to persuade me to suddenly condemn the man.
And for the record I voted McCain in 2008 and supported him the entire way.
I voted for McCain also, so what?
A lot of research went into those "Blog Entries" and if you are not interested in reading them, why are you here? I am here for truth and fairness, You?
Careful, cause Mandy Will open that drum of whupass, and you will not be able to sit for a month. Mandy and I BTW, are both just to the right of Atilla the Hun, so the vote argument means squat.

Creationist hard-right candidates and undereducated psychopaths like Chris Simcox who would be the alternative to McCain in Arizona.
Speaking of Ron Paul and other assorted Birch society loons: I just started watching Glenn Beck's special revised history of "progressivism". He starts out by claiming that some of the founding fathers had evil plans to redistribute the wealth and start an evil central bank but were thwarted by the Constitution. Only later when America turned its back on the Constitution did these evils plans become reality...

I've lived in several. Right now I'm living in another one. You ask the devout locals about our Representative and their eyes glaze over in admiration for her political orthodoxy. The GOP doesn't even bother. The DNC also doesn't bother since she's a lifer.
I think you're waging a fairly unnecessary battle with me, and one that is far too serious for a Friday evening...
[Brown's] prior visits to Washington, he explained, were mostly to watch his daughter Ayla, a college basketball player, play against American University, or to visit the monuments "as a tourist."
"I'm a history buff," he said. "I love the Museum of Natural History."
-- Sen.-elect Scott Brown (R-MA), as quoted by the Washington Post.
When you first started talking about that gig, I thought it was for three weeks. Three years will be an experience. How does Mrs. Hoopster feel about it?
I work for a large Japanese global Corporation..Many positions are rotated after 3-5 years..From the top down through the ranks...It's part of the Environment and culture. I know I have a few years to make my mark and advance or decline in the next position.. You become highly motivated to do a great job and impress Tokyo...
Ron Paul has some wacked ideas...but his economic ideas are usually very, very good. I don't understand the disdain for him on this board, beyond calling him a "wing nut" which is patently false as he's held these economic ideas his entire life.
Not really. Sure he is able to say some sensible things and is framing his ideas to be more mainstream than in the past, but taken in its entirety his platform is wacky. He is basically a slightly more presentable version of Larouche, another compete nutter who also says some sensible things.
McCain's immigration policies have always been a big problem for her.
You know, I'm not sure what it is she thinks we're going to do with those illegal aliens who are already here and who have been absorbed into our society and economy.
Is it reasonable to think we can round 'em all up? That would have a huge impact, not necessarily a good one.
I would like to see illegal immigration stopped - but I don't think there's much we can do with the folks who are here except just accept the situation.

That's where that dirty "A" word comes in that makes all the minute men tea baggers lose their shit.
UK raised the terrorist threat warning to "Severe" today...I'm going there in a week. Crap?
Maybe to the increased hassle of security but not to fearing for your safety. If you're scared of terrorists you should also be scared of thunderstorms and getting struck by lightning.

Agreed. However Malkin would have no issues with rounding people up into camps and mass deportations.

There is more than a grain of truth in what you say... I don't like it much myself. And where I worked last the majority of my co-workers were all legal immigrants who don't like it either. It maybe that the pressure from legal immigrants will be enough to stem the tides of illegals.. But I just don't know...

Yes, I'm talking the hassle of traveling. It's already terrible.
I assume he means the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History since the context is Washington DC. They have some history exhibits:
Western Cultures Hall
Exhibit: Permanent
The institutions, traditions and ideals of North American cultures are deeply rooted in those of western Asia, northern Africa, and Europe. This hall explores some examples from various cultures in the western world including northern Iraq, ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome and the recent discovery of the Iceman, a Copper Age mummy found in an Italian glacier.
Tiger.
Korea Gallery
Exhibit: Permanent
This new exhibition presents Korea's millennia of history and its distinctive culture through ceramics, paintings, textiles and sculptures, ranging from the 6th century B.C. to the 21st century. Thematic areas of the exhibit include: Korean ceramics, Honoring family, The Korean wedding, Hangeul (the Korean writing system), Korea's natural and built landscapes, Koreans overseas, and Korea's visual arts today.Tiger, magpie, pine, and sacred fungus. Late 19th century.
This is directly from their about us:
Whether looking at the history and cultures of Africa, describing our earliest Mammalian ancestor or primate diversity around the world, examining ancient life forms including the ever popular dinosaurs, or exploring the beauty of rare gemstones such as uniquely colored diamonds, the Museum’s temporary and permanent exhibitions serve to educate, enlighten and entertain millions of visitors each year. The main building on the National Mall contains 1.5 million square feet of space overall and 325,000 square feet of exhibition and public space; altogether the Museum is the size of 18 football fields, and houses over 1000 employees. With a growing network of interactive websites, the Museum is transforming itself into a hub for national and international electronic education, accessible to anyone with access to the internet.
Yeah... Natural history. Somehow I don't think that's what he was talking about.
He said history buff. I already pointed out the historical exhibits at said museum. Being a buff doesn't qualify him as a student. Thus, one can also add that a history buff would enjoy the cultural artifacts at the museum which speak of the cultural history of mankind and the various cultures.

Legal immigrants have a point - they "stood in line" and waited their turn, legally, and it's not fair to them to just grant a blanket amnesty to those who are here illegally But I have to wonder if those who are here illegally are in a whole different economic situation than those who got here legally.
After Katrina, when virtually the entire population of the devastated areas had been relocated somewhere else, Mexican workers were flocking to New Orleans. There were no housing facilities, but they were willing to live in a tent-city that arose spontaneously in City Park, in the most awful of circumstances, and those are the people who began much of the rebuilding of New Orleans.
We had a commenter here once (who is now at a stalker site), who was incensed about that situation. This guy apparently is a construction contractor, and that situation just aggravated him no end. And then, after venting about that situation, he goes on to say that he had crews ready, willing and able to work but did not send them to New Orleans because the jobs didn't pay enough.
He blamed the pay situation on the Mexicans who were here willing to work for lower wages. But they did not show up right away - the jobs didn't pay anything even before the Mexicans arrived. The Mexicans came because there was work to do and no one else wanted to do it.
So he was pissed off that the Mexicans were there doing the work, but not so much so that he would have been willing to send his own crews down here because the jobs didn't pay enough.
Mr. Hoops, you are sooo going to like Singapore. Take my word for it.
Sorry folks, late to the party as usual...(that darn job of mine, you know)...I've read through about 20% of the posts here so far.
I've always felt that if I were to perish in an automobile accident I would not desire a roadside memorial; just my personal desires, nothing more.
As such, I fervently believe that the Trade Towers be rebuilt without wasting another moment; both practically and symbolically, this important part of our monetary engine needs to be rebuilt to signify our resolve for everyone to see.
I often ask myself - What would our parents, the ones who dealt with WWII, have done in this situation?
Thanks for the shout out Charles. Much appreciated.
Thanks also to all those who've given warm wishes on my blogversary today. That too is much appreciated.
I was in NYC on 9/11; had friends who worked in the shadows of the tower; used to commute through the WTC before 9/11 (and now do daily to work in Lower Manhattan in one of the buildings that you can see in the slideshow that Charles has for 9/11. The towers I knew were always a part of the skyline - and on that crisp bright morning, it all changed.
I had always known about terrorism and the threats - the Islamists tried to take it down in 1993, and there had been warnings of a terror plot thwarted in 2000 that would have been mass carnage, but the attack on that fateful morning struck home. In an agonizingly stretch of a few hours, thousands of lives were snuffed out, and the city has never been the same.
Before I started A Blog For All, I devoted a significant amount of time reporting on Ground Zero at Suite 101 cataloging how to help the recovery, and then to report on what to do with the site and then rebuilding efforts, which continue to this day. For those who can't see this for themselves, it's important not to forget - both in terms of what was lost, what we've endured, and how much farther we have to go.
So when some nutbag goes off on a rant about how it was faked, how the government was behind the attacks, or other such crapulence, I take it personally. It sullies the memories of the nearly 3,000 murdered on 9/11 and the blood, sweat, and tears, of those who spent countless hours on the pile to try and rescue them from the collapsed towers (where multiple floors were compacted into the space of mere feet, where fires raged for nearly 3 months and the smell lingered for months later), and then in the recovery of remains that continued for years.
It's also my way of coping with the terror attacks, and to see that others learn about the attacks, what has happened, and what we can do to see that it doesn't happen again.
The Freedom Tower (1WTC) is well underway, as is 4WTC. The memorial/museum is well underway - at street level - which doesn't sound like much, but given that we're talking about a seven story structure underground operating around and between two operating subway systems (PATH and MTA subways), they're finally moving ahead with tangible progress after years of delay.
Very late reply here; just wanted to give a big hand to Lawhawk for his excellent coverage and commentary on the rebuilding efforts in and around Ground Zero. It's really quite a wonderful read; almost like an historical narrative in progress. As a native New Yorker, all I can say is: Bravo!

Wow. I certainly appreciate the information! I have now bookmarked your blog permanently in Safari - thanks for the effort, my friend!
And thanks to you, Charles, once again...
I haven't been back to NYC since prior to 9/11; what a thrill it would be to return after the completion of the Freedom Tower! I hope and pray that I'll be able to see it along with my children in the near future.
