In Haiti Disaster Zone, Mother Has Baby at Israeli Field Hospital

World • Views: 3,144

So much of the news from Haiti is bad, but here’s a little bit of good news from one of the field hospitals set up by Israeli medical teams: Haiti Earthquake: Mother Delivers Baby In Disaster Zone.

By Sunday afternoon, Moritz received the first few hopeful e-mail messages from Besser of the day. He and the 25-year-old woman were in an ambulance, en route to an Israeli field hospital that was set up in a Port-au-Prince soccer field near the airport on Friday evening. There they met the team of Israeli doctors, nurses and paramedics who had at their disposal a pharmacy, a children’s ward, a radiology department, an intensive care unit, an emergency room, two operating rooms, a surgical department, an internal department — and most importantly, a maternity ward.

Even better news followed — an ultrasound suggested that the baby was not only still alive, but oriented head-first, suggesting a likelihood of a normal, non-surgical delivery. And shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Sunday evening, the baby — a girl — was born. She was born premature, at only 32 weeks gestation, and weighed only 3 pounds, 15 ounces.

Even though the greatest threats to her health may now have passed, she still faces an uphill battle; aside from having experienced slow growth in the womb, she was born with a leg problem.

But doctors expect the leg problems to heal. The mother is doing well, despite having experienced preeclampsia, a leading killer of pregant women in Haiti, shortly before giving birth. And when Besser spoke with the doctor who delivered the baby, he said that the earthquake, ironically, likely saved the lives of both baby and mother.

“He said that had she delivered at home, both the mother and baby would have died,” Besser said.

Another baby was delivered at the same Israeli field hospital, which Besser said is “phenomenal” and has been up and running since Saturday. That grateful mother named her child Israel.

dietary factors, including vitamin deficiency

I can see those at play in Haiti.

That was a good link. Thanks. Nice to see they've made a little progress since my sister experienced it 20 years ago. I would venture some of the reasons Haitian women are afflicted as they are, and die more frequently are: 1) poor healthcare in general 2) no WIC or similar programs 3) diet high in salt 4) genetic predisposition to hypertension and 5) very young age at first pregnancy. Some of the same things my sister could claim.

First Haitian baby born on board the USNS Comfort.

100121-N-6410J-485 PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (Jan. 21, 2010) Medical professionals aboard the Military Sealift Command hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) delivered baby Esther at 2:27 p.m. on Jan. 21, 2010. She is the first baby delivered aboard the 1,000-bed floating hospital, which is in Haiti supporting Operation Unified Response. Weighing less than five pounds, baby Esther was delivered seven weeks prematurely by cesarean section as her mother sustained pelvis and femur fractures during the earthquake that struck Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010. Despite being premature, she is healthy and was delivered without complications. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Matthew Jackson/Released)

Well, I kinda meant the talent on the telethon. Obviously I cannot go there and get in the way. In the past the Army used to ask for volunteers for the relief efforts. Now they just grab a unit. I know it is probably better for planning purposes and all. But it was a point of pride to say, I volunteered and I did something. And not all of us have money to give. (Not me any more. But there was a time when I didn't have 2 dimes.)

Found it:Babies born at sea

A person born on a foreign vessel lying in U.S. port or sailing in the territorial sea of the United States acquires United States citizenship at birth. Howver, U.S. citizenship is not conferred upon a child was born to alien parents on a vessel bound for the United States which had not yet reached the twelve nautical mile limit. Similarly, a child born on a plane in the United States or flying over its territory would acquire United States citizenship at birth. However, the citizenship of the child is not affected by the nationality or registry of the vessel. Birth on U.S. vessel outside the territorial jurisdiction of the United States does not confer U.S. citizenship upon the child of alien parents.

re: #97 MandyManners

Is a naval ship considered a U.S. installation?

There's this:

USC TITLE 10 > Subtitle A > PART IV > CHAPTER 159 > § 2687

(e) In this section:

(1) The term “military installation” means a base, camp, post, station, yard, center, homeport facility for any ship, or other activity under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defense, including any leased facility, which is located within any of the several States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, or Guam. Such term does not include any facility used primarily for civil works, rivers and harbors projects, or flood control projects.

If she is here on vacation? Or as an immigrant? If her next stop is home, its a Mexican. I'm no lawyer, but as I understand how this works, the mom who is traveling, gets to take the baby home. Some bureaucracy probably has to sign off on the odd circumstance.

Well-If an American woman has a baby on a visit to Acapulco, does the baby have to get a visa to enter the us? Or do baby and mom come home together as a family of one nation?

113 Decatur Deb  Fri, Jan 22, 2010 5:42:32pm

So she's not a citizen.

I'm guessing not. There is also a difference between a Navy ship (USS) and a
US Naval ship (USNS) like Comfort. It might specifically not be a "warship".

re: #84 MandyManners

So, a child of a Mexican mother born in Texas is not a citizen of the U.S.?

As far as I know a child born anywhere in the US (including US airspace or on a ship in US territorial waters) is a US citizen by birth, regardless of the mother's status.

121 Escaped Hillbilly  Fri, Jan 22, 2010 5:47:00pm

re: #112 Rightwingconspirator

Actually, whether on vacation or not doesn't matter. The child would qualify for dual citizenship, if her mother applied, if she is born in the US. This I know from my experience with Operation Sea Signal in Cuba. The Cubans and Haitians waiting in the camps would do anything to get to the US to have the baby...induce labor by jumping off high things, inserting coat hangers, injuring themselves including burning themselves...you name it. For the Cubans it was double win because as soon as they set foot on American soil they could stay. Special rules. Didn't seem fair then, still doesn't.

U.S. installations located in foreign countries are not regarded as part of the United States for the purposes of the Fourteenth Amendment and the related statutes. A child born in the U.S. Naval Station or a U.S. embassy or consulate in a foreign country would not acquire United States citizenship at birth.

Yes, there is paperwork. My oldest sister traveled 3 weeks later than the rest of the family because of her daughter, born at Fort Clayton, Panama. Oh, and my youngest sister, also born in Panama, has to go through a hassle every year when she applies for student aid and has to explain that yes, she is an American citizen. She didn't have to have a passport though. Just some kind of govt form. I don't remember the number.
