Friday Night Music: Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers, ‘Cyclone’

Here’s another great tune from the latest album by Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers, Levitate. (Here it is at the iTunes Store.)

Most of our years have flown away with nothing much decided
Except the board we′re playing on, how it′s to be divided
Win more years yet die alone? The question′s many-sided
Got no answers of my own and none have been provided

When I was a boy there was nothing to know
The wind followed me wherever I′d go
Rain came down where I made my stand
And the cyclone rose with a wave of my hand

There is a game that′s only played in a darkened room with strangers
Dealt down and dirty with unmarked cards eyes closed to dangers
Jealousy folds without playing its hold card, romance raises grinning
I spent several lifetimes there where I could not lose for winning

When I was a boy there was love for free
Glad to be given and received by me
Rain came down where I made my stand
And the cyclone rose with a wave of my hand

I believe I can still make the cyclone rise
Just can′t see it so well, with my fading eyes

A mystery to myself not everything now I was born to be
All I know is when I wanted it so, the wind itself rose for me

You know, if it wasn′t for love
I might just be a wandering man
But believe I′ve made the better choice
To sing about it with this band

When I was a boy, I could summon the moon
With a crook of the finger and a home-made tune
I could ride the clouds when they sailed on by
And sing all the words to a wildcat′s cry

When I was a boy there was nothing to know
The wind followed me wherever I′d go
Rain came down where I made my stand
And the cyclone rose with a wave of my hand

I believe I can still make the cyclone rise
And the cyclone rose
Wave of my hand
Rain came down where I made my stand

The absurdity of wall street journalism:

Apple tablet seen nearing $3 billion business in first year

Selling an estimated 5 million units in its first year as a "base case" scenario, Apple's tablet would earn the company $2.8 billion in additional revenue and solidify it as more than a niche product, a prominent investment baking [sic] firm said Friday.

"Baking" is right... half-baked I'd say.

Whatever Apple introduces, the discretionary spending of families is too limited these days to see a big market for a $1000 toy. If Apple's rumored new product was priced like a Kindle then maybe they could sell several million worldwide per year, but that would be a price 1/3rd of that being floated for Apple's latest "creation" (to use Apple's term.)

He'll have to get through Congress and that's less of a sure thing than before. I've thought about Obama's 'populist strategy' a lot, but I want to save the main discussion for when Fenway and Matrix are here as well. For now, let me remind the GOP of DF's Rule ! for dealing with Obama Plans to push the nation left:

Ruthless Aggression. Obama's left-wing tax and regulate scheme should be shown no respect, because it is unworthy of any. The GOP should focus like a laser on how economic and job growth will be hurt by Obama's plan. Hammer him with the jobs, taxes, and growth issues. Do this without relent, and he will crumble.

The rumored Apple tablet device is supposed to have a 10.1" display, which would make it almost exactly right for the 8.5"x5.5" American standard book size (one page.)

There is little doubt that Apple wants to conquer new media markets, having the MP3 market sewn up. According to the WSJ, Apple has been negotiating with the big publishing houses.

No doubt competitor for the Kindle will be a good thing, especially one that could do color.

Yet the price...

I for one prefer real paper books. I just ordered a Javascript book and while I could have gotten the PDF version from the publisher for 1/3 rd the price of Amazon delivered paper version, I picked the latter.

e-books I find to be too frustrating to view, and for technical work just too limited in viewing area unless seen on the my 20" display.

My gut feeling is that Apple better not be counting on the rich-boy toy factor for their new "creation".

No is a word of ever recurring liberation.

When a lady says, "no, stop" for example, she is not condemned as the 'lady of No'.

One should say no to destructive things that violate one's principles. To negotiate under those circumstances is prostitution.

That should not be too great a problem. The GOP has always been able to promote pro-growth legislation in the past. It's take some legwork to put together a package, but we'll do it. We should also look into peeling any Blue Dog we can into a coalition to pass our package. Even if it can't pass, we can put the heat on the Dem leadership.

The Usury business has always been tainted, and prone to controversy and social debate.

The idea that banks are just like any other business is fallacious.

Therefore, trying to extend a laissez-faire attitude that one would normally expect to hold for the sole proprietor or small business to the business of banking does not follow.

Would you also welcome the US economy and standard of living being reduced to how it was when you were a kid?

When I was a kid...

It took only one salary in a household to own a standard family house.

College could be paid for by working for it in the summer.

Furniture was made out of wood and metal, not plastic.

And Food was made out of... well, real food.

So yes, frankly, the answer is yes.

Yea, but no internet, so no banking online, which I have to say, is a real plus.

There was also no Internet, no Satellite TV, cancer was more more likely to kill you, and Central Air was much harder to get. So my answer is no.

College used to mean books and libraries. Paper and number 2 pencil was the primary tool. Design class meant a t-square, some templates, and a drawing board. The classrooms were either too cold or too hot but people found ways to accommodate.

Today a college has to be designed by the latest hip architect commanding 10 percent of the construction cost. Then they have to deal with a mile wide selection of regulations for construction including those that provide perfect classroom temperatures.

Design class means getting the latest hot rod graphics stations with Autodesk software for a number of seats costing in the thousands of dollars. Plotter, printers, air conditioning, ergonomic seats. And we know what a science and liability ergonomics has become.

Takes years just to choose text books and everyone has an opinion. Landscaping is required. Perfect water systems and perfect sewage systems. Salaries. Housing costs. Security. Drunks. Roads. Parking. Bike paths. Coaches.

Then there's the people factor...

Did you know that the jigs for the SR-71 were made of wood?

And home-ownership was vastly lower than today.

Malnutrition and hunger were more likely than today's problem of obesity due to the abundance.

College was unavailable to much of the population.

And people all over the world starved or died of diseases that the US now now supplies vast amounts of food, medicine and aid for, due to the prosperity created by those evil capitalists.

But like you, I do like the old stuff best and am nostalgic, but I'm aware that the larger economy created by free access to money, which you term Usury, has lifted an unprecedented number of people out of poverty, fed, educated and eradicated diseases that plagued previous generations and developed medicines and technology that help most of the rest, not to mention financed the rescue of the world from fascism more than once.

Good point. There is some need for regulations to prevent a repeat on 2008-2009, but Obama would hobble banks ability to innovate and his taxes would rob them of capital. As usual, he ignores economic realities and follows his leftist dictums. I warned my co-workers and mother that he would do such things but they still voted for him. I hope that the GOP can rescue them from the folly of that decision.

And in the process of rescuing Haiti now.

Exactly. Untold millions worldwide have benefited from the modernity, science and prosperity that was created by investments and capitalism.

Our modern way of life is unheard of in human history. Very little of it was developed in places like the USSR, China, North Korea, and other places where the 'usury' of capital lending was absent or greatly restricted.

Except that the problem you refer to was the direct result of regulations, not the lack of them. You are choosing the poison to cure the sickness it created.

Good point. You're entirely right about many regulations needing to be removed.

Just a reminder the "good old days" were never as good as people say they were.

That being said I don't see why we can't have a robust economy and reasonable regulations of banks and other financial institutions.
For heaven's sake they almost ruined our economy and now the President is expected to just say "carry on, we're cool"?

I get your point and the banks were substantially to blame, but part of the problem is that the government is part of the problem. There is no accountability (other than being voted out of office) for the government and the banks become a convenient scapegoat for them to point fingers at and blame when the inevitable unintended consequences rear their ugly head (sorry if this doesn't make sense. It's late).

[...]

They made some mistakes, however the regulators bear the primary responsibility for the crisis which simply would not have occurred had they not changed the regulations. This is a governmental/tranzi screw up that was never properly identified by either political party nor the Media. Instead, they each point the finger at each other and miss the underlying truth. It was international banking regulation crudely introduced which was the main cause of the failures, not the lack of regulation.

Also, this "nearly ruined the economy" was more fear mongering in an election year. At worst, the markets, which overreacted massively, pulled back to levels of about a decade before, still a much larger economy than even the decade before that. The hype was excessive and ridiculous, and did far more damage than that of the companies that were closed or bailed out. The biggest screw ups of all being the mutual fund managers who emerged without substantial blame they deserved.

Don't believe the hype from either the Media or partisan politicians, neither of which understand what happened, or if they do, they are lying now for political gain.

109 Bagua  Fri, Jan 22, 2010 11:42:34pm

And yes, "carry on we're cool" because that is a fact. The market has rebounded since the crash, and the banks are having a good year. What a relief.

Remember that a year ago everyone was in a panic that the banks were failing and the sky was falling. Now the banks start to recover and have a profitable year and the mantra is "Punish the greedy bankers". I see, so do we want them to fail or want them to do well? The President seems confused on this question, and fear is running again through banking due to his statements.

Considering the perilous state of commercial paper any action to further tighten the screws could lead to another market crash, the indications of which we have seen over the last four days, heavy selling on high volume after Obama's attack on the banks. Good job Mr. President, appealing to populist scape goating, should this lead to a crash, November and 2012 will be very bad for the President.

It's worse than confusion. It seems to be a complete lack of understanding. Words mean things, especially a Presidents.
