Fact-Checking the New York Times

Blogosphere • Views: 6,176

I have a few more points to make in response to Jonathan Dee’s article about me in the New York Times. (Then I’ll drop it, I promise.)

First, one assertion Dee makes is actually checkable:

L.G.F. still has more than 34,000 registered users, but the comment threads are dominated by the same two dozen or so names.

When the NYT fact checker called and asked me if this was accurate, I told him the count of registered users was accurate, but that the “two dozen or so” estimate for the number of unique commenters was probably low. Sure enough, though, the “two dozen” number is what made it into the article.

This isn’t a statistic I’ve ever looked at before, so I didn’t think too much about it at the time; but now that the article’s out and I read it again, I realized that a simple database query could fact-check Dee’s assertion — specifically:

SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT authorid) FROM comments WHERE created >= DATE_SUB(NOW(), INTERVAL 30 DAY)

This MySQL query gives me the count of unique commenter IDs within the last 30 days. Here are the results from several time spans, showing the actual number of unique commenters actively posting comments:

30 days - 836 unique commenters
7 days - 421 unique commenters
1 day - 157 unique commenters

Clearly, far more than “two dozen” people are regularly posting comments.

What about Dee’s claim that “two dozen” of these dominate the discussions? Well, obviously some commenters are more prolific than others (you know who you are), but here’s a MySQL query to summarize the number of comments posted by each unique person:

SELECT commentauthor AS Author, COUNT( id ) AS Number FROM comments WHERE created >= DATE_SUB(NOW( ) , INTERVAL 30 DAY) GROUP BY Author ORDER BY Number DESC

Again, this time span (30 days) produces 836 unique users, but in that group there were 151 people who posted at least 100 comments, and a lot more people who posted at least 50 comments.

So it seems Jonathan Dee’s rough estimate was more than a little bit off.

The other issue I’ll bring up before dropping the whole thing is Dee’s description of the purpose of the “monitor” lizards (there are currently four):

And a handful of those have been empowered by Johnson sub rosa to watch as well — to delete critical comments and, if necessary, to recommend the offenders for banishment.

I explained to Dee and to the NYT fact checker that this description is not accurate, but they still printed it.

This is what I told them, because it’s the absolute truth: the monitor lizards are entrusted with the power to delete comments that are abusive/obscene/trollish, or that violate one of the rules at the top of each thread. I’ve never instructed any monitor to delete comments simply for being “critical,” and if a comment were deleted for that purpose alone I would probably restore it. In fact, I have restored a few comments deleted by monitors, but very few — because the people I’ve given this ability understand the guidelines pretty well.

Here’s an example of a comment deleted by a monitor a few days ago while I was traveling; I restored it as a demonstration of the kinds of comments most often deleted by them.

Most of the comments deleted by monitors are similar to this one — juvenile obscenities and insults. I don’t know if Jonathan Dee considers this “criticism,” but in a discussion forum this kind of obnoxious trolling adds nothing to a discussion but ugliness, and is a turn-off to the majority of sane people.

Another common reason for deletion: if a comment contains a link to a hate site such as the neo-Nazi Stormfront.

Obviously, these aren’t the only reasons a comment might be deleted. There are many gray areas and situations that are hard to anticipate with clear rules, so there’s some necessary leeway for each monitor to exercise their own judgment. But none of them were ever told to delete comments simply for being “critical.”

To summarize: Jonathan Dee apparently made up his assertion about the monitors out of thin air, and made a very inaccurate estimate of the number of regular commenters at LGF.

OK, now I’ll drop it.

In the brief time I've been registered, and the few months prior when I was just a regular reader, every time I've seen a comment before it was deleted, it deserved to be deleted.

And just think, come 2011, you'll have to pay for the privilege of hating 'em; they're in the process of figuring out how to get people to pay for the content - some form of free articles, and then charging once you hit a certain limit.

Of course, as everyone knows the debacle of Times Select, the result of putting up a pay barrier was a serious loss of traffic (and advertising revenues based on page views).

I had the Time totally twist and distort facts and quotations about an organization I work with at a high level. I think they write the stories first and they go out and get quotes and citations back up what they already know they are going to say.

OK, now I’ll drop it.

You're leaving a lot of unFisked material on the table. For instance,

...he had the wherewithal to create, almost instantly, an animated .gif image that toggled between the original letter and that same letter typed in Microsoft Word 32 years later, illustrating the issue in a way that no 500-word blog post could have done.

That's just poor writing, but to the point that it could create misunderstanding. "that same letter...32 years later" implies there really was a letter 32 years earlier. Is he a Rather fan?

On a more urgent note, everybody so inclined should write Dee and suggest that he do an article or two on Shrieks and the Muffin Man. Despite my snarkyness in comment #11, I'm not a NYT hater. But they have serious accuracy problems. My best friend is a religious reader of the Times. I keep telling him that he should take it with a grain of salt (just like any media org.) He refuses to accept that the NYT is flawed.

Their readers seem a lot like Fox News viewers; they look at what they produce as the gospel truth and all critics are just biased haters.

34 coscolo  Sat, Jan 23, 2010 2:21:41pm

Unfortunately, many papers across the country reprint NYTimes agenda-driven stories without fact-checking themselves. That said, since I now live where no newspaper delivery is available, I'm guilty of subscribing to the Times' daily crossword and read the opinion page for laughs. I often read LGF but seldom post because I usually hit cold threads.

36 The Sanity Inspector  Sat, Jan 23, 2010 2:21:54pm

This illustrates the power of the blogs even more. In decades past, Charles might have written a letter to the editor pointing out errors in a piece about him. It might have been read, might have been printed, might have drawn a response--or might not. But now, probably as many people are reading this correction as are going to read the original NYT piece.

In every encounter with the print and especially teevee and radio media I've ever had where my knowledge of the people/places/events involved was greater than that of the reporter, I've found glaring inaccuracies.

My father, who spent his entire professional life at Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore (and is currently spending a good part of his retirement there, too) was once described by the august Baltimore Sun as "working near Hopkins". The family had a good laugh about that one. We teased him about the kiosk on Broadway where he sold his medical services.

I had a fact checker call me prior to the recent article about my trials trying to bring Haku the service dog to jury duty, and I gave full and complete answers, and they still got a bunch of things wrong.

Some of this is inherent (as opposed to inerrant) human fallibility, some is miscommunication - and some is surely because facts often make for a less exciting story.

It seems that Dee is a frustrated novelist and his gig with the NYT is probably just something to pay the bills. He seems pretty snooty about blogs in general and probably considers himself a "real" writer and journalist (as opposed to those stupid plebes who write blogs). He's probably also a lefty and dismissed Charles' support for Israel claiming the it's mostly because Charles visited there once.
We saw the same thing when Charles went on the Young Turks show recently. The lefties still see Charles as an enemy because he supported the evil Bush regime. ODS hasn't gone away.

Unless things have changed since I wrote for the Tempora Romana, reporters get to suggest ideas for stories to their editors. If there's enough reader interest (as in emails to the reporter), they have an easier time getting the green light. Especially if the story is a follow-up.

I just left off the "C" from Baltimore's official moniker - one that was thought up by some PR firm in the 70s or so as our answer to Beantown, Windy City, The Big Apple and The Big Easy.

Most real Baltimorons thought it was cheap and cheesy when they came out with it, and it hasn't worn well. I don't think the name Charm City falls from any out-of-towner's lips when he thinks about us, and for us it's just a joke.

I put the donut on and she went to the tire place. She just called me and said the hole in the car and the flat tire were related. Get this, the repair guy pulled a fucking bullet out of the tire.

We had a rash of similar incidents in some of the wealthy suburbs around here a few years back, except they involved shot-out car windows, not tires. Turned out to be kids, joy-riding with daddy's pistol. There were several separate groups doing this, leading to speculation that it had become some sort of "sport" amongst the area high school crowd.

Homeless Man Covers RadioHead

"This tear-jerking video comes courtesy of the Opie and Anthony Show on SiriusXM radio. The footage was shot after the show's producers enlisted a homeless man, Daniel Mustard, to voice over a promo then found out he could sing. Here Mustard does an acoustic version of Radiohead's Creep with a slightly different take on the vocal phrasing and years and years of pathos in the delivery."

The guts of the article are about "the culture of damnation by link". The "guilt by association" fallacy has been invoked by most of those who were "delinked" as a defense against the charges of hanging out with neofascists. It was invoked falsely. What Dee missed, and what many who criticize LGF miss, is that when you attend somebody's conference or link to their blog, you are lending them credibility. You do not acquire taint from the link. Rather, you reveal what you think is worthy, by linking or attending. A number of people revealed themselves by hanging out with neofascists. They further revealed themselves through their attempts at self defense.

I been meaning to ask you this, Cato: do you have a friend or an acquaintance by the name of John Hirschfield in Baltimore? He would be a retired historian and the city's other intellectual.

Name doesn't ring a bell. But then, if there were really more than one intellectual in Baltimore, we'd be inclined to pretend not to know each other out of territorial rivalry.

But yeah, it's kind of odd North Side. Has she been to the cops? They might be interested-- or at least amused.

She asked me if she should call the cops and I told her that she should, just to give the cops a heads up so they can track gunshot incidents.

But she's young like me and is from the farmland. I told her "tell the cops, but DO NOT tell your parents. They'll demand you leave this chaotic place."

I've been running Global Affairs since they closed us down on CompuServe (when AOL bought them) and I am extremely sensitive to the "admin banning" accusations. You’re Now An Investor In Tesla Motors

Are you a U.S. citizen? If so, congratulations — you’re officially an investor in Tesla Motors.

The Department of Energy has closed its $465 million loan to the California electric car company to finance construction of the SoCal factory that will build the Model S sedan (pictured). The feds announced the loan in June, but it’s taken a few months to get the paperwork in order.

“This is an investment in our clean energy future that will create jobs and reduce our dependence on foreign oil,” Energy Secretary Steven Chu said in a statement. “It will help build a customer base and begin laying the foundation for American leadership in the growing electric vehicles industry. This is part of a sustained effort to develop and commercialize technologies that will be broadly deployed throughout the American auto industry.”

Tesla will use the money to refurbish a factory where it will produce the super-sexy Model S sedan, which it claims will deliver as much as 300 miles on a charge and cost $49,900 after the $7,500 federal EV tax credit.

Rather, you reveal what you think is worthy, by linking or attending. A number of people revealed themselves by hanging out with neofascists. They further revealed themselves through their attempts at self defense.

It's kind of bizarre how Jonathan Dee ended up with a piece that semi-defends some of the craziest right wing blogs on the web, and their associations with extremist European groups.

His description of the anti-jihad conference at which Filip DeWinter appeared is cartoonish, and the idea that I started "attacking" other bloggers after it is exactly opposite of the truth.

The post that started the ball rolling is here: Organizing to Resist the Islamization of Europe.

A coalition of Europeans and Americans is organizing to resist Islamization.

UPDATE at 10/19/07 2:06:09 pm:

It’s important to note that not all the people who are hitching a ride on the anti-Islamization movement are doing it for honorable reasons. There are serious issues around the participation of Filip Dewinter (of the ultra-nationalist Vlaams Belang party, successor to Vlaams Blok). And LGF reader “Dave of Sweden” points out another problematic member:

Unfortunately, the Swedish representative Ekeroth is a member of a pretty vile party called Sverigedemokraterna (Sweden democrats), which was originally an openly racist organization. Recently they’ve tried to put up a different facade, but I’m not convinced.

UPDATE at 10/19/07 4:04:49 pm:

Some readers are taking issue with “Dave of Sweden’s” characterization of Sverigedemokraterna. In the interest of fairness, here’s their website so readers can investigate their current policies for themselves: Sverigedemokraterna.

Note that Vlaams Belang was not the only extremist group represented at this conference.

After posting this, I was immediately viciously attacked by Pamela Geller, who called me a tool of CAIR among other insults.

I followed up with this post: When Friends Attack.

What a disappointment. Pamela: I hope you’ll take a step back and turn down the rhetoric, and see that the points I raised in this post are not unreasonable—because they’re going to keep coming up, whether from me or others. If you start attacking friends and ignoring the issue, the issue’s not going to go away. But the friends will.

Reading that again, it sure doesn't sound much like an "attack" to me. The attacks were all from Geller and later Spencer. Geller called for me to be "publicly flogged" once, and that was one of the nicer things the shrieker posted.

Since we're on the topic of the NYT trying to find a future for itself...

Can the Publishing Industry Save Itself From Apple Saving the Publishing Industry?

Something crossed my desk today that reminded me of the iTunes/record label issue, a column warning The New York Times and other newspapers about hopping into bed with Apple.

Writing for New York magazine, Gabriel Sherman laid out the case that Apple (iTunes/unannounced tablet), Amazon (Kindle), and other platform providers want to control the customer with their various content delivery vehicles, and that newspapers should not let this happen.

At issue here is Apple's unannounced tablet, about which it has been leaked that Apple has reached out to publishers of newspapers, magazines, and books to get content deals for iTunes distribution to the tablet (and I'd bet for Mac and PC, too, but we'll see).

Rumor has it that Apple CEO Steve Jobs wants to save the newspaper and magazine the same way Apple saved the labels (and in the process make several new fortunes selling the devices that will be part of the saving formula).

Suspect that would be unlikely. GM would not have rebuilt itself. Rather, a court would take control after bankruptcy, and a court appointed team would develop a way to sell off GM into as many parts needed to raise the largest amount of cash possible, in order to pay back creditors some fraction of their principal. Now, the court appointed executors may have decided to keep whole divisions going, say the truck/bus business and sell it as a unit to another corporation.

Anyway, it is unlikely that GM would have continued as is without having been helped.

NASA’s Puffin Is Way Cooler Than a Jetpack

The engineers at NASA have combined every one of our geeky transportation dreams into a single little vehicle called the Puffin. It takes off like a helicopter and flies like a plane. It can cruise at 140 mph and, with a boost mode, hit about twice that. Oh — and it’s electric.

If that sounds too good to be true, it is — for the moment. But give it time. NASA unveiled the concept today at the American Helicopter Society meeting in San Francisco.

The tilt-rotor Puffin has a flight system similar to the V-22 Osprey, but instead of carrying a bunch of Marines and their gear, the Puffin carries one person in the prone position. The rotors are nearly 7.5 feet in diameter and the aircraft has a wingspan just over 13 feet. Thanks to carbon composite construction, the Puffin weighs in at less than 400 pounds including the lithium phosphate batteries.

Postal Service to Test Electric Truck

The U.S. Postal Service keeps chugging along in its quest to find an electric delivery truck, and it has enlisted the help of two outfits for the final part of its study. One of them, AC Propulsion, is well-known within the EV community. The other, AutoPort, is the company that gets to do the heavy lifting.

The companies will work together on the engineering, development and conversion of a conventional mail truck to electric power, one of five ideas the Postal Service is considering to begin electrifying its fleet of 142,000 vehicles. Once the truck is built and tested, it will see duty on the streets of Washington, D.C. AC Propulsion CEO Tom Gage is confident his truck will measure up.

“We are thrilled to partner with AutoPort to present a long-term solution to the U.S. Postal Service,” he said in a statement. “Our solution provides the safety and performance required by the USPS, and it will reduce cost, increase efficiency and improve driveability for the mail carriers.”

re: #224 freetoken

Suspect that would be unlikely. GM would not have rebuilt itself. Rather, a court would take control after bankruptcy, and a court appointed team would develop a way to sell off GM into as many parts needed to raise the largest amount of cash possible, in order to pay back creditors some fraction of their principal. Now, the court appointed executors may have decided to keep whole divisions going, say the truck/bus business and sell it as a unit to another corporation.

Anyway, it is unlikely that GM would have continued as is without having been helped.

I fully agree that GM going out of business would have been a blow on the economy and would have caused more unemployment in many states. With that said, I think that many of the other companies would have picked up some workers. Who knows, maybe Michigan would have welcomed other companies that weren't unionized. I think if your UAW worker had the choice between a job with no union and unemployment, they would choose the job. Union members aren't the problem, union leadership is.

Moscow's Stray Dogs Evolving Greater Intelligence, Including a Mastery of the Subway

For every 300 Muscovites, there's a stray dog wandering the streets of Russia's capital. And according to Andrei Poyarkov, a researcher at the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution, the fierce pressure of urban living has driven the dogs to evolve wolf-like traits, increased intelligence, and even the ability to navigate the subway.

Poyarkov has studied the dogs, which number about 35,000, for the last 30 years. Over that time, he observed the stray dog population lose the spotted coats, wagging tails, and friendliness that separate dogs from wolves, while at the same time evolving social structures and behaviors optimized to four ecological niches occupied by what Poyarkov calls guard dogs, scavengers, wild dogs, and beggars.

The guard dogs follow around, and receive food from, the security personnel at Moscow's many fenced in sites. They think the guards are their masters, and serve as semi-feral assistants. The scavengers roam the city eating garbage. The wild dogs are the most wolf-like, hunting mice, rats, and cats under the cover of night.

But beggar dogs have evolved the most specialized behavior. Relying on scraps of food from commuters, the beggar dogs can not only recognize which humans are most likely to give them something to eat, but have evolved to ride the subway. Using scents, and the ability to recognize the train conductor's names for different stops, they incorporate many stations into their territories.

Additionally, Poyarkov says the pack structure of the beggars reflects a reliance on brain over brawn for survival. In the beggar packs, the smartest dog, not the most physically dominant, occupies the alpha male position.

The evolution of Moscow's stray dogs has been going on since at least the mid-1800s, when Russian writers first mentioned the stray dog problem in the city. And that evolution has been propelled by deadly selective pressure.

Most of the strays arrive on the streets as rejected house pets. Of those dogs kicked out of their homes, Poyarkov estimates fewer than 3 percent live long enough to breed. To survive those odds, a dog really does have to be the fittest.

Wind Turbines Leave Clouds and Energy Inefficiency in Their Wake

Clouds stream in the wake of wind turbines arrayed at the Horns Rev offshore wind farm in this stunning photo. But David MacKay, a physicist at the University of Cambridge in the UK, sees the image as illustrating the common problem of back-row wind turbines losing power relative to the front row.

Downstream wind turbines may lose 20 percent or even 30 percent of their power compared to their fellows in front, according to a study on wake effects at Horns Rev that MacKay highlights on his blog.

The paper also emphasizes that different wind directions make it practically impossible to gauge an overall "steady state" for large wind farms, unless researchers can sample wind speeds and directions at multiple points throughout the array.

In 2006, Anthony Atala conducted a routine organ transplant. Well, the procedure was ordinary, but the organ being transplanted was anything but. The organ wasn't donated by another person, but grown in the lab by Atala and his colleagues. This feat landed Atala on our Best Of What's New 2006 list. Now, in a new TED talk, Atala goes into detail about his work, explaining how they grow the organs, and what he's working on now.

Since you're making nifty database queries, think you could do one more on something I've been curious about? What percentage of users from late 2002-2003ish (maybe just pull a random post?), when I first started reading LGF, are now banned?

It's just that I've noticed very few of the same users are still around, and I've always wondered if it's because they've simply left or were blocked.

Some Lizards put a post that so succinctly states what they want to say that others need not comment (like myself). So I generally don't post for this reason. This is in fact due to the amount of Lizards that are well informed about the topic and not just of like mind. There are definitely dissenting views on a lot of topics which makes for great discussions. Most Lizards are witty, well informed and and grounded people as well as open minded enough to look at things that may be a dissenting view as long as it is presented tastefully and with FACTS.

Sorry, the story irritated me when they were talking about a "couple dozen" posters. I like facts not hyperbole. I guess I just should have said that.
