Nice Words from Colmes

Media • Views: 2,969

After the New York Times Magazine article a lot of wingnut blogs are coming up with imaginative new smears tonight, but I’m grateful for the positive words from Alan Colmes: Little Green Footballs’s Charles Johnson And The Right-Wing Flame War.

Charles Johnson is a true original, his knowledge of code enabling him to be one of the first in the blogosphere, and his fierce independence angering those who initially embraced him. It’s this same independence that makes him eminently readable, and much more interesting than most of the web’s all-too-predictable presences. His split with the most poisonous denizens of the right is profiled in the New York Times Sunday Magazine. Johnson fact-checks his profile in true LGF form.

A recent LA Times piece examined the Johnson’s evolution as a blogger and the reactions it engendered, with Johnson remarking, “The kinds of hate mail and the kinds of attacks I am getting from the right wing are way beyond anything I got when I was criticizing the left or even radical Islam.” (Click here for just one example.)

A recent Vanity Fair article explains more, including how Johnson is likely to stay at the forefront of the blogosphere.

...including how Johnson is likely to stay at the forefront of the blogosphere.

Just goes to prove: If you aren't the lead sled dog, the view never changes!

Charles (and the rest of us) ain't goin' nowhere. Get used to it, loons.

4 prairiefire  Sun, Jan 24, 2010 7:48:26pm

Charles is a true original and I appreciate this blog and the other posters very much.
The technical aspects are great. The ease of posting and following the threads, automatic youtube embeds, and the ding button all make this blog very interesting and fun.
Now when I read other blogs, I am always comparing to the high standards of LGF.
Cheers, Charles.

Cheers to Charles for taking the side of facts and reason and doing so much to spread information and invite fact-checking and debate. So many political ideologues rely on people remaining ignorant. LGF is a nightmare for them.

11 gremal  Sun, Jan 24, 2010 7:56:03pm

I remember a lot of the hate mail Charles got for criticizing Islam, and I always found it to be more threatening than what comes from the right.

Amid the mass of aid agencies piling in to help Haiti quake victims is a batch of Church of Scientology "volunteer ministers" claiming to use the power of touch to reconnect nervous systems...Some doctors at the hospital are sceptical. This grudging respect between Colmes and Charles is more evidence that the old "right" and "left" wing camps are breaking down, imho. You know we're facing a new realignment of politics when a prominent 79 year old Republican state senator (and pharmacist) introduces 2 bills legalizing marijuana link

In 1988 West Virginia was poor and white - so they went for Dukakis, the Democrat. In 2008 WV was poor and white - so they went for McCain, the Republican.

Being Episcopalian, wealthy and educated used to make you Republican, now it makes you recoil from the populist harangues of the most powerful Republican personalities on radio and Fox News. (For the record, I am 1 of those 3 things, and just barely.)

If it is human nature to divide into factions, and "2" seems to be the most stable number of warring camps, how will we realign and what will we call ourselves next?

Well said! Should be interesting.

I think it all depends on what the economy does in the next eight months. And how Obama handles his adversaries. The healthcare debate has become the black hole of DC. It has sucked the life out of the rest of his domestic agenda.

Will the House pass the Senate bill and send it to his desk? That's the big question now.

Hi PF!

I'm not quite that in to Speed Racer. I liked the cartoon when I was a kid. That and Kimba the white lion. Please don't tell anyone about Kimba.

Now that Massachusetts has had their election, the Obama Administration has a new focus:

White House advisers promise sharper focus on jobs

Some of the details:

Due to the current financial situation caused by the slowdown in the economy, Congress has decided to implement a scheme to put workers of 50 years of age and above on early retirement. This scheme will be known as RAPE (Retire Aged People Early).
Persons selected to be RAPED can apply to Congress to be considered for the SHAFT program (Special Help After Forced Termination). Persons who have been RAPED and SHAFTED will be reviewed under the SCREW program (Scheme Covering Retired-Early Workers).
A person may be RAPED once, SHAFTED twice and SCREWED as many times as Congress deems appropriate. Persons who have been RAPED could get AIDS (Additional Income for Dependants & Spouse) or HERPES (Half Earnings for Retired Personnel Early Severance).
Obviously persons who have AIDS or HERPES will not be SHAFTED or SCREWED any further by Congress.
Persons who are not RAPED and are staying on will receive as much SHIT (Special High Intensity Training) as possible. Congress has always prided themselves on the amount of SHIT they give our citizens.
Should you feel that you do not receive enough SHIT, please bring this to the attention of your Congressman, who has been trained to give you all the SHIT you can handle.

Well, this past week was not like that scenario, but still pretty impressive in total rainfall. Here are the totals from San Diego county:

[Link: www.wrh.noaa.gov...]

A new series of storms will hit this week, but will be nothing like last week.

To date, I believe the largest storm directly observed was Typhoon Tip:

After passing Guam, it rapidly intensified and reached peak winds of 305 km/h (190 mph)[nb 1] and a worldwide record low sea-level pressure of 870 mbar (hPa, 25.69 inHg) on October 12. At its peak strength, it was also the largest tropical cyclone on record with a diameter of 2,220 km (1,380 mi).

Extratropical storms can grow to be quite large too, but have been no where near the intensity that Tip generated.

True, but in both the US and UK the auto-workers unions went too far. The manufacturing plants became about the workers and not about the cars they built. Don't get me wrong, companies should always do right by their employees and unions have a role in ensuring they do. But the UAW went way too far and stopped caring about the need for its works to do their jobs right and at a sane cost. Their refusal to consider those needs has helped cripple the Big 3.

It reminds me of what is going on with the Teamsters here. It was all about how much money they could get paid and how little work they had to do. In theory, that is what unions are supposed to do (at least the money part). But it gets to the point where labor costs balloon out of control.

Look at what is happening at McCormick Place. They are losing conventions left and right because it is too expensive to hold a show in Chicago. So, great, the forklift drivers make a ton of money, but there is less and less work to go around every year. (And this is coming from a former union forklift driver.)

re: #266 Dark_Falcon

I know. but unless the union's leadership is put under massive pressure, they won't budge. Its not about making Chicago convention friendly, its about them keeping control. To accept a giveback of money or power is to admit your weakness and they won't do that.

Exactly, but I don't want to say I blame it all on the union. For example, if a vendor wants a case of pop for the convention, it costs $100. A big metal thing (the technical term) of coffee? $125. It's not surprising, as the guy who owns the catering company is a family friend of the Daley's. Plenty of blame to go around when it comes to the conventions fleeing to Vegas or Atlanta.

I could talk about this stuff forever, but it's late and I have an early start tomorrow. Goodnight all.

Okay but stay safe. I don't get warning for our little duels with mother nature in Calif.

I think it's gonna be OK, we're going to get some wind and rain in a few but the weather radio is on, fresh batteries, good flashlights.

Big deal, smokes at the casino are $12 a pack if you buy them, or $22 in comp money and room service beers are $6.50. Just like football games and movie theaters, it's a captive audience where you can maximize your profit. I've been to CES in Vegas plenty of times, and stuff is just as expensive on the convention floor.

284 Irenicum  Sun, Jan 24, 2010 9:51:37pm

Again, its not until death is near that the bosses can be made to see reason and even then they sometimes don't. Accepting reality for a coddled union usually means a freeze in salary (which means allowing inflation to roll salaries back) or a shift to allowing management to schedule the workers more its way, which workers don't like. Either way, they'll always be some hothead who will attack a union boss willing to compromise as a sellout. The bosses know this, so they protect themselves by pushing for unsustainable concessions.

Unions don't set the prices for munchies at venues like rock concerts, conventions, or movie theaters. They may be responsible for lots of things, but you can't find $1.00 cokes or hot dogs at most any event.

President Obama has decided to take on the banking industry with the most intrusive regulatory and tax package since the New Deal of the 1930s. If the president's failed freshman year didn't convince the O Force of his own fallibility, confronting Wall Street should bring him back down to Earth.

The only good bye post that could be classed as something other than a flounce was NYNana's. She left after her friend in real life, Carl From Jerusalem. got the boot. Charles was right to ban him after he linked to Gates of Vienna, but he was her friend in real life and not just online, so she stated she would be leaving to follow him. There was neither drama nor hostility, but I still wish she'd stayed instead.

Charles didn't ban CiJ because he linked to Gates of Vienna. He was banned because he spam-pimped his blog in the spinoffs, EXCEPT for the time he blogged GOV. His spam pimping was irritating to many here, even those who read his blog anyway.

Try a Hokkaido pumpkin with gorgonzonal or any sort of blue cheese, just baked. Dead simple and elegant, although a bit fatty.

Hate and vitriol is what you get when you exercise your own judgement instead of blindly following the pronouncements of the self-appointed elite. Right or left, it doesn't matter . . . some folks have set themselves up as the Unquestioned Moral Authority of the whole human race and if you disagree with them, you are TEH EEEEEEEEEEVIL!

Keep doing what you're doing, Charles.

True free thinking is what brought me here, Charles. My most humble and abject thanks for doing what had to be done, and enduring the insanity from those who disagree with you.

As others have eloquently stated here, you have earned my respect. As has Mr. Colmes, who also has some experience with disdain from the intellectually challenged.
