The most succinct, to the point spin I heard on the whole speech was NPR, where I was listening to the speech, a reporter summed it up by calling Obama a "A Fighting Conciliator."
That hurt my head.

Priceless.

Stewart's the master of the bug-eyed pause. That's a handy skill lately.

Reposted from the Fark thread about this:
"Good.
Now maybe while he rots in prison, he can mull over that whole "Thou Shall Not Kill" thing, and what his ignoring of it entails."

Stewart is quite funny. I woke the wife up laughing at that routine.

I think Stewarts report nailed it.
Chris Matthews is embarassing :/

I am sorry to say there is oftentimes more truth in Stewrarts performances than in all of cable news. What a pity.

It's funny when Stewart makes fun of people I like make fun of.

I think it's been pretty handy all throughout the last decade, and wow is this thread not even going to hit 50 post? Since when does that ever happen here?

Help me out here...
In this episode.... when Doris Kearns Goodwin is talking.... they are making fun of Strom Thurmond for filibustering civil rights legislation.....and comparing it to Republicans...
Wasn't Strom Thurmond a Democrat?

He might have been a Democrat at the time, but shortly afterwards he and a bunch of other Dixiecrats left the party to become Republicans.

OK, but a Historian should know that... She keeps referring to "they" and uses Strom Thurmond as an example... and Stewart mentions "civil right legislation" just to make sure everyone knows it was bad....
In the past year, if stuff didn't pass it was because democrats didn't have the votes they needed.... democrat votes...

Democrats had all the democratic votes they needed to pass it.
They needed 50.
I don't think anyone would argue that there weren't 50 democratic votes for the bill.
But because of Republican actions they forced the democrats to look for votes from people like Joe Liberman, WHO IS NOT A DEMOCRAT and who ACTIVELY CAMPAIGNED AGAINST OBAMA during 2008.
The democrats will probably always be rather fractious in the 1960's so were the Republicans and the two sides could meat in the middle to get stuff done.
Not so much anymore.

By the way did anyone catch Colbert's follow up? I loved his line about the Republican Govennor who was giving the "anti state of the union speech" last night.
"No one has ever looked more presidential in that building except for Jefferson Davis!"
Why did Republicans think it was a good idea to try an set up a mirror image of Washington in Richmond, does anybody have an answer?

Matthews: "ya know, I forgot he was black, tonight, for an hour..."
Stewart: "....uuuuhhh, ya know what else you might've forgotten? You're Mic'ed!"
Wyatt S: "... Wow! Whoa! Whoa! I'm sorry, I just caught myself in the monitor. I forgot I was black! Wow! Look at me! I'm Black! Pant's on the ground. Pant's on the ground.(repeat)"
THAT. WAS. HILARIOUS.
This, however, was just plain racist:
Tribalism? Why would he say that?
