Ongoing Outrageous Outrage: Word Counting

Politics • Views: 5,456

One of the silliest in a long list of silly wingnut obsessions: word counting. The I’s Have It: Obama Uses ‘I’ 43 Times in Baltimore.

Every time they do this I have a *headdesk* moment. Please, folks. Get a grip. It doesn’t prove Obama’s a “narcissist.” It proves you have way too much time on your hands.

It would be better to say, "I have no rebuttal to what I said, nor do I have any better ideas of my own."

At least it would be honest.

I would love for one of these dumbass flunkies to actually rewrite one of Obama's speeches to use no pronouns. It'll probably sound REALLY WEIRD

That's the politics of going after your opponent's strength: educated? he's a snob. Confident and a good speaker? he's a narcissist.

5 Silvergirl  Fri, Jan 29, 2010 2:46:57pm

He could start doing the third person thing like Bob Dole and call himself Barack Obama instead of saying I.

Strange hobby this word counting.

9 Donna Ballard  Fri, Jan 29, 2010 2:48:31pm

You go to admit his speech was well rehearsed! I only heard him stumble once. I might have missed something but it seemed pretty smooth, unlike another pres I could mention but too many people are already prepare to blame him for everything anyways so I won't go there. :-)

I don't really think it's activist to show gay kissing in an ad.

I also think it's CBS right to refuse to show the ad.

It's probably the "man on man makeout session" (quote from your link). Note that the advertiser isn't interested in a little editing to make it more palatable. Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum, i smell the breath of an activist...

Well, I hope they'll have some anthropomorphized dogs pimping some chicks in bikinis!

No, it's not. But it feels like activism to not want to edit it out. Surely that can't be their only good idea...

Meh. The advertiser wants to get gay men to go to their site, right?

So if they take a stand, refuse to edit the ad, and there's press about that, that gets a nice viral campaign for them without paying for the superbowl time.

Sounds more like business smarts than activism to me.

I'd say the Hick from French Lick came up in a similar way, especially since he dropped out of Indiana and then took a job as a street department worker.

I don't know. They're black and make her calves look great. She has interviews at Stanford and MIT/Harvard for her MD/PHD program coming up, so these are shoes with a purpose-- to give her confidence to nail those interviews.

She's really actually an incredibly savvy shopper, so I'm sure she got them at an enormous discount. It's just more the shock that two little shoes represent that much.

204 Gus  Fri, Jan 29, 2010 4:01:55pm

re: #178 Obdicut

Yeah. I really get the feeling that Pelosi and a lot of the other Democratic head honchos are being every bit as obstructionist as the GOP, but more dishonest about it. The GOP wants to deny Obama success, but I think that same charge can be laid against Reid and Pelosi-- but they're doing it in a much more dishonest fashion. Or they're just incompetent, of course.

They take turn depending on who's in the majority. Regardless of party whoever is in the minority tends to take the road of old fashioned politicking which may come off as being dishonest at time.

I'd like to see more bipartisanship regardless. Somethings need to be done by finding middle ground (naturally it will lean towards the majority). The minority party still represents an overwhelming number of Americans. It makes sense that they're allowed to play a visible role in congress. That itself might help reverse some of the revanchism we're seeing because they don't feel that their voices are heard.

McHale was another one of those super rugged, you can count on him, type players...a perfect duo right there...and like MJ, either one could post up on the big guys at center....fearless inside players, and Bird could make any shot imaginable

There are a couple of posters, particularly on the overnight threads, who like to stir shit. Sharm called them out on it; they didn't care for the spotlight revealing their warts, and their response - which as I recall went on for days, since dropping things isn't their long suit - was nasty and vulgar.

I would hope this could have as lasting an impact as the Carnegie libraries. (I saw one a few years ago, still intact and operating. I took a picture.)

Now we just need to educate all those kids that aren't going to die.

As a kid I lived in the Carnegie Libraries, and the great Carnegie Museum. Working class Pittsburgh families are ambivalent about Carnegie (not about Frick). For some reason there is a Carnegie Library in Eufaula, AL.

It's true, the personal pronoun count is not such an indicator of ego.
But the length of the speech, given that there was not much new, and the ' throw the kitchen sink at it' approach was a little bit of a diss.
The true egotistical stretch was expecting that ( at least) three blatant false statements would simply go sailing over the heads of all the bitter clingers out there.

Interesting report from local beat reporter today from the stupid Pro-Bowl...seems the Cowboy coaches, players, wives and girlfriends were pretty much enjoying hanging together. Other teams guys split up into small cliques.

Yeah, that first storm has reached Dixie, in the form of ice, sleet and snow. Dammit.

That first storm was beautiful. We got over ten feet of snow in the Sierras last week...the only time it bothered me was Monday afternoon when I was sweeping the mountain...It was a white-out, had gotten warm earlier so the snow was unstable, and as I was scouting some chutes to see if we had any skiers out there, I set of a small release (about 10 feet across and three feet deep) that got me to thinking I should get off the mountain. Fortunately, it managed to slip beneath me and I was able to stay out of it. They say when you get buried under six inches of snow, you can't even open your eyelids due to the pressure. And there's a 15 minute window before you're considered dead.

Regarding the complaint that Obama uses the word "I" too much:

What do they think of this speech?

I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

You know what? RWC has a full on product studio set up in our den! He would do the pic's for the boutique and download them to Charles! He could even show me how to do it, and we could have this thing up and running in no time!

Who doesn't want a Little green footballs baseball hat or a coffee cup?

Well I certainly do! T-Shirt, hat, coffee mus, you name it. But I just talked to RWC and he say's Charles has his hands full an might not want to do it right now. Lets not get too pushy about it, even though I'm very enthusiastic about it myself.

I noticed that Newt Gingrich was immediately on Fox, gleefully touting the State of the Union's "I" word count.

I gave up counting the number of "I"s in Newt's bashing of the word I after about 40, 5 minutes later.

It's literally the most nonsensical meme I've ever heard applied to politics in the past year.

364 Diane  Fri, Jan 29, 2010 5:46:49pm

On the subject, Obama's I's,

In my case, talking to a group, I try to use "I" "le moins que possible". It's hard in French, since many sentences will start with "Moi, je pense... bla, bla..." - A double "me".

We or I?
For President Obama, perhaps using "we" more often (not the royal we) would feel like the whole gang is part of the picture, all of us together, right and left and center, our nation united by our common interests and our actions. Just a thought.

re: #1 abbyadams

It would be better to say, "I have no rebuttal to what I said, nor do I have any better ideas of my own."

At least it would be honest.

If I could give you a +1 for that, I would. They're really, really grasping at straws here.

More interesting than the number of times POTUS did pronouns.... the words he did not mention even once:
Terrorist, Israel, the Middle East, al-Qaeda, jihad, Islamism, Palestinians, Gaza, mullah, Iran....
Just saying.

Or he could say "Your Daddy"

"Great White Father in Washington" has certain unfortunate history attached to it, and also, of course, is not appropriate to the particular president.

"Great Black Father in Washington" has a certain ring, but would probably cause aneurysms in some of the listening audience.

He also did not say:
lighthouse, brouhaha, balderdash, ballyhoo, hemorrhoid, fingerbang, hornswaggle, vibrato, Wankel Rotary Engine, gumdrop, crotch-a-teria, sarcoidosis, menopause, "haulin' lumber" (as a euphemism for 'erection'), lot lizard, or shag (verb form).

Nor did he refer to Hillary Clinton as "Sir Pumpaloaf".

THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!

The "I" or "me" thing isn't a big deal but you know the other side would do the same if a republican was doing the same thing.

There was a DC/national radio show (Don and Mike) a few years ago that would review the Jerry Lewis Telethon every year to find how many times Jerry Lewis said "I" or "me" or "my kids" when referring to adults with MD.

Your text to link...

Like with Jerry Lewis, you get the sense that The President has a little ego problem.

English lost its unique second person plural, replacing or merging it with the singular in the modern period. Some americans saw a need for it and invented new forms: "you all" (y'all) and "You ones" (y'uns).

Will we know the economy is on the road to recovery when these "I counters" finally get day jobs and start disappearing from the message threads?
