Yes it was... but as an ex-professional drinker this was just everyday for me. Never drunk at work, never drunk at family occasions where is was not cool, never drunk period, when drunk wasn't cool. But all the other free time, buzzing right along.

It was a lot like "King of the Hill" where the good old boys in the alley out back always had a beer in hand.

9 HAL2010  Wed, Feb 3, 2010 6:06:36pm

Reminds me of my time at university. Except back then we didn't need a reason to drink, usually someone, the least hungover one, would simply say "pint?", and off we would trudge.

It was not an easy life, I tell you.

Michelle Malkin uncovers the secret socialisticy seekrits behind the Obama's fascist garden.....
SEIU fatcats behind First Lady’s anti-obesity campaign

Behind every seemingly good deed in the Obama White House, there’s a deep-pocketed, left-wing special interest. Take First Lady Michelle Obama’s crusade against childhood obesity. Who really benefits from the ostensible push for improved nutrition in the schools? Think purple – as in the purple-shirted army of the Service Employees International Union. Big Labor bigwigs don’t care about slimming your kids’ waistlines. They care about beefing up their membership rolls and fattening their coffers.
.....
The East Wing is now in full campaign mode – leaning on the nation’s mayors, traveling with the Surgeon General, and meeting with Congress and cabinet members to reauthorize the Lyndon Johnson-era Child Nutrition Act, which provides government-subsidized meals to more than 30 million children. It’s part of the Obama administration’s self-proclaimed “cradle-to-career” agenda for America’s youth.
.........
The well-intended program to feed poor kids has morphed into an untouchable universal entitlement with a powerful school lunch lobbying coalition of Department of Agriculture bureaucrats, food-service industry executives, and union bosses.

Beware the lunch lobby! No war for tater tots!

re: #11 Killgore Trout

The SEIU’s front group, “Campaign for Quality Services,” is clamoring for “the right to sick days and training” for school food-services workers. Never ones to let a crisis go unexploited, SEIU sent its members to lobby in front of Chicago public schools last year and scare parents into supporting their labor agenda. They accused the school system of “putting our kids at risk” during flu season by resisting the SEIU’s sick day coverage demands. “Without sick days, I can’t take a day off, so I have to bring germs to school,” an SEIU janitor lamented.

Unionized school dietician and nutrition jobs are booming. And in addition to school breakfast and lunch, the SEIU is now pushing subsidized dinner plans and summer food service to create a “stronger nutrition safety net.” Translation: Perpetual employment for big government and its public employee union au pairs.

Jamie Oliver did a series in the UK called School Dinners to improve school meals. Parents were actually smuggling in McDonalds through the school fences. It was amazing that kids couldn't even identify most vegetables. They'd just never even seen them before.

hey, so everyone who denied in various exchanges with me that Tea Partiers were a force to be reckoned with in GOP campaigns, looks like Cornyn is acknowledging their increasingly influential role: [Link: www.huffingtonpost.com...]

"

"I think it's important that we try to channel these relative newcomers to the political process through our primaries so that they can have an impact on who's nominated. And hopefully they'll unite behind that nominee after the primary," he told reporters in the Capitol.

If he thinks it's significant enough to address that the TP crowd could form a third party and hurt the GOP, then it's significant enough for me to bring up. They're not a fringe, they're serious business.

One of the saddest events I ever attended was my great Uncle Jack's wake. He had been a lifetime alcoholic. I'll say this for him, he ruined no woman or child's life with his drinking; no wife, no kids, his lifelong relationship was his alcoholism.

Some of his "buddies" came to the wake. It was an untraditional memorial; we sat in a room and people would say what they felt they had to say. My uncle (the nephew of the deceased) tried to get the "buddies" to tell us some "great stories." They looked at him blankly.

I just wanted to scream. There were no interesting stories. Nothing happened. They met in a bar. They might have talked, with decreasing coherency. They got drunk.

Nobody traveled to interesting places. Nobody achieved anything great. That is the whole story. He sat there. He drank. His whole life.

He was actually a really nice guy. I liked him a lot. He might have had a life.

I like junk food. I like ho-hos, I like chocolate Chex mix, I like fast food burgers (the good ones, like Burgerville) and I like fried potato products. I love Doritos. I like these things as treats, in moderation.

What i don't do, is eat them every day for meals. What I won't do, is consider it a DIET instead of an occasional treat. That is what Jamie Oliver addresses. He's one of the good guys, and smearing him is just stupid.

Look, maybe I should clarify my point here.

I don't wish to ban any food, I think the experiment they have done in New York is far too intrusive. People ultimately have personal choices to make, and I am firmly against any really legislation regarding the wholesale ban of certain foods.

However, when school kids can't tell a potato from a tomato, then Houston, we have a problem.
When there is a movement glorifying peoples obesity, there is a problem.

This isn't about legislation, it's about information.

In some respect I do agree that the celebrity TV chefs are very silly and self serving. However, they are the only popular food advocates we have. Most people don't even cook anymore. They eat take out or frozen dinners loaded with chemicals and other unhealthy stuff. Most people don't even know how to cook fresh vegetables, or they think it's too expensive or too time consuming. I little bit of education can go a long way to living a healthier life.

I went into a total snit over the Guardian's letter-writing campaign to Ohio for Kerry. I was furious. Damn Brits! We fought a damn war so they'd stay out of our politics! How dare they!

And I voted for Kerry.

That's different. It's OK for people from different nations to try to talk about each other's food and suggest improvement. That's entirely voluntary, and Jamie Oliver did stop when he was told to do so. What the Guardian tried to do was to interfere in our elections, something they would scream about if we did. It was unfriendly, and deeply hypocritical.

I first suspected The Kid's treason when he went off the reservation and announced his admiration for Tebow. I overlooked it because The Kid's life goal is to beat his rushing/passing record and to win the Heisman in his freshman year.

But, when he became a Bama fan, I'll never know.

No, that is true, you can't make someone eat healthy if they want to eat garbage, and you can't make someone change their lifestyle. Diabetes however DOES have a habit of forcing people to change their lifestyle. I don't like the implication that the guy who's trying to help and educate is the bad guy.

So? There is no lack of education about what food is good for you and what food is not... it's not a mystery, it's not rocket science, it's not something that almost anyone can take a personal responsibility for.

I'm mainly talking about adults. Obesity is primarily a person own fault. No one else.

Laws against driving under the influence ARE NOT ABOUT HEALTH.

They are about CRIME.

They're about health and crime. Or to be specific, they eventually over time became about SAFETY and crime. DUI laws did not become serious business until MADD lobbied for increased penalties, using drunk driving fatalities as their primary argument. There was a time when a DUI was not much of a crime. That has changed.

Just like the FDA's laws are about health, safety and crime. Weighted differently depending on whether we're talking about an e Coli scare or trans-fats or whatever.

I pan fry them a little to brown them, then stick them in a casserole dish. Then I saute chopped garlic, onions, red bell pepper and mushrooms in the same pan. Then I dump in some tomato sauce and chopped olives, a few herbs/spices, and let that simmer a bit.

Poor that over the sausage in the casserole dish, top with some mozzarella, and bake it at 350 for 20 mins. and cook up whatever pasta I have on hand to go with it.

Normally I don't like to brag too much, but I even surprised myself a little bit with how well it turned out.

"To better quantify the impact of foodborne diseases on health in the United States, we compiled and analyzed information from multiple surveillance systems and other sources. We estimate that foodborne diseases cause approximately 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths in the United States each year. Known pathogens account for an estimated 14 million illnesses, 60,000 hospitalizations, and 1,800 deaths. Three pathogens, Salmonella, Listeria, and Toxoplasma, are responsible for 1,500 deaths each year, more than 75% of those caused by known pathogens, while unknown agents account for the remaining 62 million illnesses, 265,000 hospitalizations, and 3,200 deaths. Overall, foodborne diseases appear to cause more illnesses but fewer deaths than previously estimated."

If ever the Feds had a case for stepping in and claiming jurisdiction under the interstate commerce clause, its in the case of the dreaded "dry County". A bunch of lokel yokels get together and decide to make it illegal to sell beer in their County. Who the F* are they? A guy from Michigan wanst to buy some beer made in Missouri while he's in Kentucky? Thats interstate commerce right? The entire concept of a dry county should get tossed in the scrap heap.

I would accuse you of moving the goal-posts but, you're not conceptually able to describe a ball.

WindUp, I've gotta say I agree with Mandy. When someone describes a moment of personal pain of that magnitude, responding with a google search doesn't give it the gravity it deserves. It's not like Mandy says stuff like that a lot, and it should be respected simply for the depth it comes from.

re: #217 MandyManners

even if it was a life changing event, its kinda... ugly to discount others suffering because of your suffering.

Compassion and empathy are Christian Values ;)

re: #222 Obdicut

I just got here, but I had kind of the same reaction as him.

Your suffering doesn't give you the right to belittle others' suffering.

Utah also has a weird "private club" law for bars, right?

I was there one weekend in my life for some conference..
I will say this right now..Those people are like Rockford Wives.. and Husbands.. We were in a Hotel Bar one night and just the most handsome guys and gals...That was back in the 80's..
OK Let's do it...Top 5 places for most beautiful people
1. Hawaii..( If you don't like this weeks choice....Don't worry a new group will be in next week)
2. Montreal ( Shut up..The most beautiful girls in North America)
3. California Girls...Surfer dudes on the Beach (It's a tie)
4 Salt Lake City..( More Blonds per square mile that Sweden)
5. Netherlands.. The Girls are tall and beautiful..The guys are big and handsome
That's my top 5...

They actually can't do that, mich. When the 21st Amendment repealed national Prohibition, it included a clause allowing local jurisdictions to prohibit making or selling liquor within their borders. Thus while Illinois and Wisconsin allowed booze right away, Mississippi kept its dry laws until the 60's.

No, immediately taking offense and using your life-changing event as a great big bludgeon makes you all ready to pick an epic fight. Why does it diminish a DUI to say that the FDA protects us from tainted food? Tainted food kills people, there are sometimes criminal cases in the wake of such (Though not as many as there should be) Why are you fighting with me on this fact?

I like the view in San Francisco plenty. High hills makes for good legs on women. And there's a fun, quirky style of dressing that's unique to the city.

But I'm just a San Francisco booster from way back. My grandmother was a native San Franciscan, and that's a damn rare thing.

Really? A town full of private dicks that won't carry guns, usually take a beating from mob types because of their wise cracks, barely tolerated by local law enforcement, living in mobile homes by the beach, and driving old Firebirds?

I was making a perfectly reasonable point, and it's still a perfectly reasonable point. If she wants to relate personal anecdotes, hey great! But she did it in the context of the argument, AS an argument. And responded to me personally with all this anger. So I get to respond to the argument.

The quote:

Now, you tell me how prevalent death and disability are due to E coli and some fucking fat compared to this.

and I did. I literally found precisely the information she asked me for.
