TeaBagCon: Where Have All the Young People Gone?

Here’s an interesting note on TeaBagCon, from a roundup of the first day’s craziness by Mary C. Curtis at Politics Daily:

A funny thing about the break-out session “How to Involve the Youth in the Conservative Movement” – not too many young people showed up. Mishelle Perkins, a 44-year-old mother of five children, worries about the paucity of young people at local meetings. The Rutherford County, Tennessee activist came Friday to get some tips. Jordan Marks, executive director of the conservative Young Americans for Freedom, suggested that activists use Facebook, volunteer to speak at high schools (“bastions of liberalism”) and simply do fun stuff that hooks high school and college-age kids. Marks described a bowling party he organized – “Knock Down the Pinheads of Communism.” A strike equaled Mao, a spare, Pol Pot.

Fun for the whole modern tea party family!

At the convention tables, attendees also had the opportunity to purchase mementos.

T-shirts are popular, with slogans like “Keep the Change, I’ll Keep My Freedom My Guns and My Money.” For $89.99, you can buy a sterling silver tea bag necklace/pendant, decorated with your choice of gemstone. (Buy one, and the second is $49.99, with a free cup thrown in.)

Well I guess in this case it'd be Hershey's cookies and solyent green!

Reminds me that the current leader of the 'Young Republicans" is in her mid-30's.
Elected after bitter infighting because of-- what else?-- racist comments someone left on her Facebook wall to which she responded with "LOL".

More interwebs and young people FAIL from the right.

3 Cato the Elder  Sat, Feb 6, 2010 8:42:15pm

Long time pa-assing.

4 Gus  Sat, Feb 6, 2010 8:43:24pm

There's a reason for that. Back in my day something like the Tea Party Convention would have been considered uncool. Still is.

5 What, me worry?  Sat, Feb 6, 2010 8:44:24pm

Maybe it was the price to get in, but it didn't seem like many young people were there. The only "young" people appeared to be children. Rather bored children.

6 Slumbering Behemoth Stinks  Sat, Feb 6, 2010 8:44:29pm

Fascist rhetoric doesn't appeal to a young American crowd? That brightens my day!

7 Residence: Hopeandchangeistan 2012  Sat, Feb 6, 2010 8:44:32pm

Well, only the elite young folks could afford the admission, and I don't think they feel welcome.

8 stevemcg  Sat, Feb 6, 2010 8:44:55pm

They should go after the cheerleaders. That's if I was giving advice. I'll only charge them 50K. Besides, young people are overrated.

Late last night, we were commenting on the age group of the Tea Bag crowd. It seems to be more of a middle-age to senior demographic.

They're frightened because they're being frightened and it's all a bunch of lies and rhetoric. Yes, Iran and North Korea are a threat, but what is she suggesting we do? Call them the axis of evil? And how does that help anything? Or maybe she wants to start bombing.

I also don't like the constant implication that "their" side is more patriotic than the other side. She's a divider. She feeds the beast.

My folks took me to a lute concert when I was about 10. I had never seen anything so dull in my life. I can still remember the excruciatingly painful boredom piercing my skull like a 1,000 rusty knives. Oddly enough I now have a master's degree in music history and play a passable 8 course Renaissance lute.

I agree on Hurt Locker. It was as 'real' as any war movie. I read a review that included army dudes with relevant training. They quibbled on a few details like the gun fight that had to be changed to make the movie flow right, but essentially agreed on its factual correctness.

Bonus - the director is a girl.
Double bonus - she has made a lot of other movies that are nothing at all like the Lifetime network
Triple bonus - she is one of James Cameron's ex-wives.

I'll think about it for another day or so but I'm thinking about paying off my mortgage and staying here in Portland. Moving to the coast has a few more uncertainties than I'm willing to cope with right now. Some family issues popped up last week and I think my newly found bankroll could help someone else more in need than myself. It's still fine by me, I like it here in Portland and will be very happy even if I have to drive a few times a month to get to some decent fishing. Either way it'll be fine by me. Without a mortgage I can start spending money on the house and my business without much worry. I'm already planing for the possibility of building a large attached greenhouse in the back garden for next winter.

Hey, they've admitted that the real problem is the 'enemy within', i.e., within the White House. Plus LIBRHULS!

Allen Quist, a Republican who is seeking to defeat Rep. Tim Walz in southern Minnesota’s First Congressional District, told attendees of the Wabasha County Republicans Christmas Party in mid-December that beating the “radical” liberals in Washington, D.C., is a bigger battle than beating terrorism.

“Our country is being destroyed. Every generation has had to fight the fight for freedom… Terrorism? Yes. That’s not the big battle,” he said. “The big battle is in D.C. with the radicals. They aren’t liberals. They are radicals. Obama, Pelosi, Walz: They’re not liberals, they’re radicals. They are destroying our country.”

Reminder: Only the GOP can be trusted to keep us safe.

True. Especially given the artificially inflated prices of homes. My friend bought his house in the late 70s at around 7,000 dollars. Some houses around the Washington Park area (Denver) were selling for 70,000 when I moved here in 1990. They're upwards of 300,000 now. Renting is more flexible and for the most part cheaper.

I don't think this is a surprise. Tea parties are a phenomenon that appeals to folks afraid that America is losing its cultural heritage. That's not a common fear among the young.

Moreover, words like gay and socialist don't make younger people's heads explode. The acrimony tied to such words is based on the culture struggles of a previous generation of Americans.

She didn't say much...a few dog-whistles about the Obama-Pelosi-Reid admin, etc. But what I noticed most was the quiver in her voice...none of that bald-faced confidence she had in the campaign. I think she had her speech modified just before tonight (to reduce some of the hateful rhetoric) and was feeling a little nervous. Yep, that's it...she looked nervous. And that's okay with me.

Half the people who've been sold on the American nightmare of home ownership should be renters. It make pulling up stakes at the behest of your wage-slave-masters so much easier.

Which is why I'm still renting. Since I'm not married, don't have kids, and don't have any need for a house any time in the near future, I'm renting a townhouse. It's great, and works for me.

As long as all my bills are paid on time every month, I'm set. It's definitely much easier and more affordable than if I tried to own, especially with me looking at grad school and a reduced income while I get my degree. As long as I can afford to stay where I'm at, I'll be okay.

re: #144 freetoken

However, that doesn't mean the cost of ownership is 0! If it wasn't for inflation, and the government subsidizing house ownership (through mortgage interest deductions), owning a house would not look anywhere near as attractive as it now does to many people.

Maintenance is another headache, one I always hated.

Try living in Texas. No income tax, so >50% of school levies come direct from each district in the form of property taxes (the state covers less than 50% from the general fund). The long and the short of it is that I pay around $8,000/year in property taxes on a house I bought in 1997 for $155,000. Brutal.

181 Eclectic Infidel  Sat, Feb 6, 2010 9:35:18pm

I think as a younger person, one really has to be focused & exceptionally analytical to even entertain a notion of political involvement. Even then, it's worth pointing out that the younger generation probably finds political activism (in whatever flavor) to be unimportant in their lives. I say this as someone who has been politically active only for the past three years, and have witnessed first hand just how disinterested younger folk (I'm talking college here) are, in general. I get it though. It is a time commitment that runs counter to a social life.

Moreover, words like gay and socialist don't make younger people's heads explode. The acrimony tied to such words is based on the culture struggles of a previous generation of Americans.

Another thing that I a few others of my friends who recently left rental for mortgage was the push that came mostly from the agents was to push what finances allowed to the maximum or even just stretch a little over it to 'get the biggest or the best you can afford, regardless' The idea that just because one could afford this amount a month but didn't want to actually spend it seemed foreign. I actually stopped using the first agent I got because she was really icky and quite patronizing about the whole thing. Yes technically I could manage more per month for a mortgage and have bigger house but would rather spend it on other things and have some leeway if the financial situation ever changes and not have to worry or stress about making a payment. You would think that's a prudent way of thinking but I guess not in all quarters. I've known way to many people in my life even when things were decent who lost a job or got sick or whatever and have gone through 'I have this huge mortgage payment, over extended financial situation hell' for it not to just seem obvious.

Then there's homeowners or condo associations some people have to deal with.

Tell me about it. They're a nightmare too and some of the people on a condo board or homeowners assn really do just enjoy making people's lives hell. Especially younger people.

I had one once years ago when I was young-- lots of old people on the board and they didn't like the newer (younger) people moving in. This was a heavily Republican place peppered with Bush (sr.) signs. We had the only Clinton/Gore sign and sometime before the election we got a notice about how it was against the rules to have political signs up. Yeah, right.

We also had an election night party that, uh, ran kinda late with lots of wild cheering. The next morning we got a typed (unsigned) letter on board stationary threatening us about the 'illegal cat' we had. (the older residents all had pets grandfathered in).

Should KT sell his house? Nah, not if he expects to live in it until he dies. Putting down "roots" is good for society and Portland benefits from having responsible citizens.

The 'what can I afford' attitude is poison. I'm counting the days until I can get one of those Tata Nano cars. That and a classic, vintage motorcycle I can park under a carport at my apt are all I want.

As for houses - it's even worse for the blue collar sector. In cheaper homes, the maintenance is a heavier burden due to cheaper building materials; the fees and general overhead from creating a mortgage are proportionately higher; they hold their value less well than nicer homes; poorer people often have more irregular income, but the bank wants payment on time every time; the mortgage tax deduction is less valuable if you're in the lower brackets; predatory owners turn your neighborhood into a rent-house slum. Home ownership for poorer people is a burden in a dozen ways.

Exactly right. We were perfectly fine neighbours-- we weren't even home that much. These were a garden co-op kind of deal. But we lived near the president of the assn, and I think she immediately put us on her shitlist because we weren't married, to be honest.

There was also a general bullshit tension between the older people who had been there for many years prior to it going co-op hating the newer, younger residents moving in.
There were various harassment issues. Specifically to do with visitors and parking. There was a designated parking area for visitors but you were technically only supposed to have two at a time. Everyone violated it, and many of the older residents would make money selling a visitors permit to some commuter who needed access to the train. (the train permit parking in this town was super-expensive).
But anytime we had visitors it was guaranteed that there would be a hassle.

re: #230 austin_blue

Well, I'll tell you, DL, if a graduated income tax was instituted in Texas that levied 5% on my gross pay at my salary to replace school taxes, which presently consumes 13% of may gross income (which if applied across the board would actually be revenue neutral) I'd jump and down. Not gonna happen. The poor have been bamboozled into thinking that no income tax is a boon for them. They have no idea what they are paying in increased rents to cover the landlord's property tax. Plutocracy lives!

If Quinn really would make sure than taxes as a whole stayed the same, I might reconsider. However, Illinois Democrats are not as sane as Texas Democrats and are far more inclined to tax-and-spend liberalism. Conversely, Illinois Republicans are more sane than Texas Republicans, a fact I attribute to a far smaller percentage of fundies.

Yeah I totally understand why from their perspective. The more I spend the more they get. There's definitely incentive there. :) It was just the way it was done that really pissed me off. Just whole lotta BS about making and investment on your future, it's the best to do, this is how investing is done, I care and a I'm teaching you type attitude and if you don't listen you're some sort of uniformed dolt. If it was only me then I'd write it off as a just the person but I know quite a few others who have had a similar experience and can easily see how some people end up with something that they can 'just' afford even in the best of times.

Oh I'm with you, I think they preyed on people. And boy I wouldn't want to be them now, with those folks with the adjustables they sold as a good deal, having their phone #.

Sounds like that came with nosy neighbors. The kind that would keep a look out on the visitors parking while taking notes.

I lived in a place that was taken over by some smooth jazz douche bag. I would rarely be loud but the time I was he freaked out. Which amount to two times. Anyway I got that under control. It was a tiny house that I lived in. They changed the name and turned it into condos and sold my tiny house for 115,000 dollars. Later they tore down the house next door which has now been a hold in the ground for year.

I remember seeing the remodeling work and it was poor quality work. The yuppie suckers probably thought this was a great opportunity since this was coming out right at the tail end of the roaring 90s. Oh, and the abandoned garage next door is still abandoned and hasn't been developed for almost 20 years now.

My 'hood has a Resident's Association, not a Homeowners Association. No legal covenants in the deeds because it was built, mostly, between 1920 and 1955.

Lots of tear downs and McMansions put up in the last 10 years (grrr...), but if you look at the original platting agreements when these parcels were subdivided in the late 40's, like mine, there is some truly archaic stuff in there. No second living unit on any lot unless it was for your maid. And my favorite, "No properties may be sold to any member of the Negroid, Mexican, or Mongoloid races".

Crying fascism and letting slip the dogs of hyperbole has been a well practiced pass-time of the far left when confronting things they have no articulate arguments with which to counter.

Rather than fighting against such hyperbole with intelligent arguments of their own, right wing populists have decided to engage in revisionist history, penning articles and entire books of word garbage that amount to nothing more than stating "I know you are, but what am I"?

I will not toss around the word lightly, I'll leave that to the mental midgets trying to score invalid points on either side of the aisle.

But what I have seen growing in this populist Tea Party movement, most certainly underscored in Palin's speech tonight, and even before that with other right-pundits in the past, is a use of fascist rhetoric, an appeal to fascist sentiments.

One of the answers from a panel member I saw was to "Take back the schools" (not sure who took them since they are PUBLIC schools) but it amazes me that none of these folks seem to get that if they want their "movement" to work they need to get rid of the social conservative baggage.

Teens and young adults are just like all of us and there are folks who are fiscal conservatives at every age, BUT more and more younger Americans just do not care about issues that have a religious bent.
So they want these "limited government" folks to be true to that. No getting involved in who can be married, who can serve in the military, what is taught in science class and abortion. All those things involve micro-managing our lives and young voters really seem to reject those views.

And, maybe be FUN?
KT, you need some fun in your life. (IMHO)
What is your wildest dream?
How could you make it come true?
( None of this lute playing torture, stuff.)

It's all fun to me. There's no shortage of "fun" in my life. Watching a seed sprout is fascinating (to me). Crack open a tea seed (camillea sinensis) a look at what's going on in there. Nodes, bulbs, blobs, etc. Sprout a New Zealand Spinach seed at tell me that's not intineresting. The seedling shoots out a root and then backs its way out of the pod. Fascinating (to me).
Fun for me is eating take away curry in a hotel in london at 3 am while watching goofy late night British TV or watching a million dollar violin sell at Sotheby's. Gambling my own hard earned money on an instrument at auction and getting it home, cracking the top off and being the first person in 150 years to look inside. Standing nut deep in a freezing cold river and flinging a wolly bugger on the end of a fly rod all day is fucking spiritual to me.
No shortage of fun and excitement in my life. I'd have to have Bill Gates money before considering more extreme measures of fun.

re: #247 palomino

I used to admire that sentiment--it seemed traditional and respectful. But it's been perverted now in our discourse, and most of the time means something ugly.

The sentiment itself is harmless nostalgia. Like wanting to go back to the "wonder years" of your youth where Santa Claus was real, where grandpas/mas never died, and every policeman/authority figure was a pure and virtuous good guy. All lovely things to reminisce upon, yet none of them true.

When that sentiment becomes a serious plank of a political movement, watch out. You're dealing with a brand of fascist romanticism that predates the third reich.

No getting involved in who can be married, who can serve in the military, what is taught in science class and abortion. All those things involve micro-managing our lives and young voters really seem to reject those views.

If "limited government conservatism" actually stood for all those things, I'd be inclined to call myself a conservative.

However, since the general idea that these nutjobs have when it comes to limited government is limited government for themselves and total micro-management of the lives of everyone else, I'll pass.

The underlying idea here seems to be that by 'being religious', you generate some sort of 'crimecredit' that you can cash in when you decide to break someones jaw. What utter shite :

A senior judge could be called on to investigate a complaint that Cherie Blair handed down a more lenient sentence to a man who had been convicted of fracturing a person’s jaw because he was religious.

Mrs Blair, a devout Roman Catholic who sits as a part time judge under the title Cherie Booth QC, spared Shamso Miah from jail last month after he was convicted of assaulting a person at a bank queue in east London.

The 25-year-old from Redbridge, north-east London, was given a two-year suspended sentence instead of a six-month jail term because, Mrs Blair said, he was a “religious person” who had not been in trouble before.

No one wants to be lectured, especially those of us who are behaving poorly/childishly. But the (not so) current pop-culture sentiment of anti-intellectualism, anti-education, anti-science, anti-elite, goes beyond that.

It is a mentality which seeks an easy scape goat, an untermensch to demonize.

They have found their target, and they have frozen it. They have personalized it, and in speech after rhetorical speech have polarized it.

You (and Richard Dawkins) are making a mountain out of a molehill. Every defendant tries the line of "he's such a good boy otherwise, pillar of the community, visits his grandma in the rest home every Sunday, volunteers after school with fair haired rosy cheeked orphans, even the gingers..."

Why do you think defendants are dressed respectably in a coat and tie?

Being an otherwise good person, unlikely to get into trouble again, is a tried and true way to angle for a lower penalty. Church participation is just one category of being an otherwise good citizen.

Does religiosity equal goodness? In my experience the answer to that is a rather emphatic "No!". I'm sick of the idea that atheists are expected to be less good or moral than religious people being given currency. That's why this is bullshit.

I loved a line I saw her earlier "You people want to shrink government enough that it can fit in all of our bedrooms!"

That's pretty much spot on.

I cheered in this state when Lawrence v. Texas was decided because it's not the government's role to tell consenting adults what they can and can't do in the privacy of their own bedrooms. To me, that was a huge win.

I know that as a liberal, I'm supposed to favor all sorts of big government, but I actually favor smarter, more efficient government. I'd love to upgrade and streamline the system we have in place so that it can actually better serve people. Kill the redundancies in the system, make it easier for agencies to communicate with each other, and get rid of the dead weight, whether it's bureaucrats just hanging around until their pensions kick in, or mountains of regulations that serve no purpose or which just make things more complex than they need to be.

I don't know what that makes me politically, but given the batshit crazy mofos who run the GOP here in Texas, I just call myself a liberal and vote anything but Republican. It's worked out well so far.

1. I think you would agree that it's a perfectly rational thing for a defense attorney to use to show his client's general good character, especially if he knows the judge is a practicing Anglican, if this was in England.

2. Does church attendance equal being good? certainly not. Does it nudge you in the right direction viz not stealing, not being self-absorbed, treating people with respect, etc. I'm saying Yes. I'm a practicing member of a competing denomination. I can name a dozen hypocrites who think their regular attendance gives them a get-out-of-jail-free card, but I can name many more who are genuinely better people for the effort. This is only my opinion; neither of us can really give citations for this point.

3. Dawkins and one of the Hitchenses have a big chip on their shoulder about 'ligion, imho.

I do want to say one thing here. The rhetoric has become hot. And because of the people involved, it can become violent. Please, whoever you are, whether on the left or the right, recognize every person involved as being inherently valuable. Also, recognize that any extremist activity will only serve to escalate any violent tendencies. This can not end well. Recognize yourself in the other, whoever that other is. The current environment is only mainstreaming extremism. Please recognize that the divides exist in all of us.

No, it's late and I'm not choosing my words with Toyota quality precision. Church attendance is one of many proxy variables for an attorney to show his client is really a good boy who made a mistake instead of being some hopeless gangster psychopath. As an atheist guilty of some crime, at the time of sentencing, you should get to mention all your volunteering, your character references, standing in the community, etc. Dawkins is just trying to stir up something where there's not much there.

On a related note, we may agree. I despise that little Jesus fish in advertising. When one Christian gives preferential pricing to another, when one Christian thinks he doesn't have to match prices with a competitor, that he can just whip out the secret handshake, like a Freemason, that's unChristian. Your example of criminal mischief with kids is similar, but not identical.

That works. For me, 'conservative' would ideally mean pragmatic progressivism, i.e. "let's not all rush into this, it's a good idea but it needs a solid foundation." I suppose from a European perspective I'd be a conservative.

"Republican" is no where near equivalent to "conservative". One is a party title, the other is a philosophy of governance.

Also, you are not the boss of us! :p

Oh God. Just read this comment at Big Journalism:

Breitbart's barnburners and interviews are over on PJTV.com. I was a speechwriter for Mayor Giuliani ... and I can tell you that Andrew can deliver a great speech.

And if you didn't get to here give the gift from the Revolution to our tea party brethren, we've got a new battle cry: Don't Tread On Me.

Thanks Andrew!

Can someone please tell me were the drugs are? I seem to be missing on the uptake because apparently these people are on drugs.

Can someone tell me how I can get the drug to sell to the teabaggers? Because I could make a mint given the quantities they seem to be ingesting.

First, you'll need a fleet of black-painted UH-1H Hueys and UH-60 Blackhawks...

re: #435 laZardo

That works. For me, 'conservative' would ideally mean pragmatic progressivism, i.e. "let's not all rush into this, it's a good idea but it needs a solid foundation." I suppose from a European perspective I'd be a conservative.

It does not mean that over here in America or in Canada for that matter. So your definition of conservative is different from mine.

Who are the "Tea Party" people? They are THE people. Citizens. When the politicians poo poo them, they are mocking the very people they have sworn to represent. When those in the media mock them, they reveal that this country truly is being run by an aristocracy cheered on by a group of arrogant elitists.
What do the "Tea Party" people want? They want those politicians who are NOT representing the people kicked out the door. So far so good.
Those who mock this simple truth are fools.
It's so primitively simple to hand pick examples of strange or improper activity in any movement. But why attack the movement itself?
The "People" want real change.

I can! But when I lived in So. Jersey (68-75) the expressway bearing the river's name was deliberately mispronounced the "Shur-kill".

457 BunnyThief  Sun, Feb 7, 2010 9:14:21am

I'm with badger. Is it really necessary to use a crude sexual reference to refer to these people?

Yes, a couple of them might have used it first, but the vast majority don't know the term, or don't like it.

It was an Obama supporter who first referred to Obama as a "magic Negro." I don't like that term, either, especially when I think of who will be using it and what they will be implying with it.

The same with referring to Obama as "clean and well spoken" and commentin on how he's a "light-skinned African-American" with "no discernable Negro dialect, unless he wants one."

But if we stick to the same logic in calling them "teabaggers" -- "hey, one of YOUR guys started using it, so we can use it now all we want!" -- then we got no defense against those idiots who start tossing around the words of Biden, Reid, and David Ehrenstein.

And ain't we supposed to be the better folks?

458 Nemesis6  Sun, Feb 7, 2010 9:17:26am

Epic lulz at the fact that they're now referring to themselves as teabaggers.

Also, about the bowling event - If they really wanna hook new people in, they should go for the libertarians -- Replace "mao" with "the fed", and "pol pot" with "big government", and they'll rope in those libertarian cultists by the dozens.

459 maryatexitzero  Sun, Feb 7, 2010 9:28:41am

During the Bush years, the "anti-war" (or anti Bush) movement mostly consisted of middle aged to elderly people too. A lot of young people supported Obama, but after the election, they went back to their lives and their own interests. In general, radical political action doesn't really appeal to them.

The baby boomer generation, liberal and conservative, was empowered by the belief that the personal is political, and that political action can solve all problems. As a generation, they grew up believing that the individual cannot accomplish much without getting media attention and political influence. So, when they're feeling unhappy, dispeptic or generally powerless, they tend to see membership in a large, often radical political group, as the solution to their problems.

Most other generations (the WWII Great Generation and the Internet generation) believe that individuals can solve their own problems with joining a large, loud political group. More power to them.

Epic lulz at the fact that they're now referring to themselves as teabaggers.

Nemesis, can you cite some current examples of Tea Party folks calling themselves "Teabaggers?" The most common cite I've seen is of a few at the very beginning of things, seemingly when someone got the idea of sending tea bags (actual little paper bags of tea leaves, not scrota) to Congress in emulation of the Boston Tea Party, and one or two "wits" coupled that with the sexual innuendo. Ever since the more vulgar interpretation has become more and more common (sigh...), it seems it's only used by the Tea Party Movement's detractors.

But if you say "they're NOW referring to themselves as teabaggers," (emphasis added), I'd like to see what's got you saying that.

That IS pathetic. Why didn't she just use a TelePrompter? That way instead of just using five or six words as a framework to hang an entire speech off, she could have stood there and read it to everyone, with her head doing the tennis match thing bobbing back and forth.

465 Obdicut  Sun, Feb 7, 2010 10:01:18am

re: #464 BunnyThief

No, she used the crib notes during the question and answer session, where she was supposed to not know the questions ahead of time.

She read her speech off of written notes.

But hey, at least it wasn't on a teleprompter, which is bad for some reason!

You start sounding like the communist when you say stuff like: "this country truly is being run by an aristocracy cheered on by a group of arrogant elitists." The wealthy aristocracy exploiting the hard work of the proletariat being enforced by the bourgeoisie? We're all oppressing the Tea Partiers.

And to fill you in on what the young people are doing here at my university. The College Republicans are busy raising money to get Karl Rove to speak on our campus. They're about 90% of the way there. Do they sound like the arrogant elitists?

Are they? The last writing class I took had a political theme to it, and the professor would refer to them as "tea baggers" and we'd all start cracking up because we thought he was making a mistake (twice, in different readings). Who knew the tea baggers were also sexual deviants, too?

It's a "no brainer," all right, when you spout off about something that's easily disproven. The fact is that young people are abandoning the right in massive numbers, and there's plenty of documentation to support this.

For just one example: [Link: www.gallup.com...]

re: #469 Charles

I understand there was a bit of a throwdown between some Birthers and Breitbart, among others, with Breitbart telling them that as an issue it was both dead and a loser... which I agree with.

I heard a theory during the campaign that I found compelling: Obama deliberately ignored this as much as he could to keep the small-minded idiots fixated on it ("if he won't comply, he MUST be hiding something!"), investing all their energy into this whole BS thing, and therefore not digging into other things that could actually amount to something. By never confronting it directly and forcefully, personally, he let the dummies waste all that time and energy on a "nontroversy."

That theory appealed to me: using idiots' own idiocy against them to keep them chasing their tails and out of REAL mischief. That so many of the idiots seemed quite content to play along was almost entertaining...

You see, when I was a kid I used to save up for a month, so I could get an R&B album and, the same day, the completed works of Anton Webern. Maybe that means something. Maybe that tells you something about my music. -- Excerpt from the book "Rock and Other Four Letter Words", copyright 1968.
