No Teleprompter for Sarah

Politics • Views: 3,455

Among the other right wing talking points Sarah Palin hammered in her $100,000 Tea Party Convention speech: that Obama uses a teleprompter.

I know. The horror. Only a commie would use such an infernal device, right? Why, I’ll betcha that no politician ever used one before Obama was elected!

Palin can proudly say she’s teleprompter-free, though. Because she just writes her crib notes on the palm of her hand with a ball point pen.

But no teleprompter! [winkies]

She also said, “around the world, people who are seeking freedom from oppressive regimes wonder if Alaska is still that beacon of hope for their cause”…at about 14 minutes into her speech. Maybe a teleprompter would have been helpful.

Only the elites use teleprompters, these crib notes on her hands shows us that she’s a woman of the people.

Yes, it is Walter. But Palin is a professional victim. If we didn’t oblige her with the mockery she deserves, she’d still claim she was being ‘unfairly attacked’…or worse yet, being attacked with silence!

It’s not easy stroking her ego, but if we don’t do it, the consequences could be disastrous for Alaska.

If Alaska declares independence, it could then vote to rejoin Russia. Heck, they are no longer communist and have no qualms about drilling for oil wherever it is there to be found.

Hi everyone! Sarah here.

Wow, what a night, huh? Wasn’t I amazing? I tells ya, it’s just made me feel so great to be an American again when I spoke in front of all those people and stuff. I heard they paid me a lot of money but I really don’t pay much attention to that math stuff anyway so I’m just gonna say I’m giving it all back and whatever!

Wasn’t I great? You betcha!

Now, about that notes things. Well, as you all know, I was pretty good in high school and I used to do this all the time! Everyone said it made me sound smart. Sometimes I’d write down what stuff I should wear on my hand so I wouldn’t forget. And when I was Governor of Alass-ka, I’d write stuff down all the time on my hand because I really wanted to remember the important stuff.

Not like Obama’s teleprompter, right? I’m smarter and it shows. It also means I’m a real person. I mean, who here hasn’t written on their hand during a test in class??

Right?

Anyway, just wanted to give you a heads up on that. Talk to you later!

xoxoxox,

18 Petero1818  Sun, Feb 7, 2010 10:46:36am

I believe Palin focuses on this bizarre point as a feeble compensatory explanation for why she is not nearly as eloquent a speaker as he is. She seems to be suggesting “of course he is a great speaker…he uses a teleprompter…while I am not quite so good, but at least I don’t use a teleprompter.” The truth is that if ever there was a politician who required a teleprompter, it is Palin. Her nonsensical run on sentences leave even the most astute observer scratching their head. Obama has proven as recently as last week’s Q & A with the republicans, that his oratorical skills are second to none (regardless of what you think of his politics). I so look forward to Palin as the republican nominee in 2012 so she can go toe to toe with Obama without a teleprompter. The honest truth is that it is not a lack of teleprompter that handicaps her speeches, it is a lack of education, integrity, intelligence, and knowledge of the issues that has her sounding like the pageant contestant that she really is.

I hate to make a comparison, but I see her position in the Republican party analogous to that of Jesse Jackson in his heyday: he could never be considered a serious candidate back then, but he commanded enough of a block of voters that he could place terms and conditions on a candidate to ensure his support and the votes he commanded.

One can well imagine Sarah assuming a similar role in the next election. Perhaps even demanding a cabinet seat.

Submit this to NRO.

[He] impresses his audiences when there is a TelePrompTer rolling out a speech for him to read or when the points he should make are written on three-by-five-inch cue cards. But give him a question for which he can’t recite an answer and he flounders about, offering vague generalities and giving every indication of an embarrassing lack of knowledge.

(The article in question is from 12/18/81. I’ll let you guess to whom they were referring.)

And, for those who care, I don’t care one way or the other. I am enjoying the schadenfreude, though, because the whole damn Teleprompter was a stupid line of attack anyway, so a little turnabout is fair play, as long as it goes away in two days or less.

I forgot to add her comments, these are from the Wallace interview she did this morning on FOX:

On Chief-of-Staff Rahm Emanuel, she said his comments calling liberal groups “f-ing retards” was “indecent and insensitive” and cause for his dismissal.

But the former governor went to great and sometimes awkward lengths to insist that when conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh used the same exact term to describe the same exact group, it was simply in the role of political humorist.

“They are kooks, so I agree with Rush Limbaugh,” she said, when read a quote of Limbaugh calling liberal groups “retards.” “Rush Limbaugh was using satire … . I didn’t hear Rush Limbaugh calling a group of people whom he did not agree with ‘f-ing retards,’ and we did know that Rahm Emanuel, as has been reported, did say that. There is a big difference there.”

Seriously Biased headline of the week:

Human rights group slams Israel’s probe of Gaza conflict

And although the article does explain that Human rights watch isn’t happy enough with the fact that the Israeli military has “launched investigations into 150 separate incidents, including 36 criminal investigations opened thus far”, the headline fails to mention that in Gaza, the ruling Hamas movement released a summary of the steps taken to investigate wrongdoing, saying it had prevented militants from targeting civilians.

So even though the Human rights group slams Hamas’ probe of the Gaza conflict, when they conclude that Hamas’ conclusion is “factually wrong”,

But the rights organization dismissed the conclusion as “factually wrong.” Human Rights Watch said it is still reviewing a full Hamas report.

“Hamas can spin the story and deny the evidence, but hundreds of rockets rained down on civilian areas in Israel where no military installations were located,” Stork said. “Hamas leaders at the time indicated they were intending to harm civilians.”

Kinda like what Summer ahh.. er… Sarah said upthread. It’s ok because it’s folksy! And everyone does! (I never did that). It’s not the evil teleprompter which btw, wasn’t invented by Obama.

Um… Sarah was looking at paper notes on the podium during her speech. What’s the difference between that and a teleprompter?

re: #50 jamesfirecat

Well looking at the transcript it looks like Rush didn’t actually call them “f-ing retards” since he left off the F-bomb so while technically Sarah might be right, it only matters if she cares more about the word “f***” then “retards”.

And what’s really funny is that the proposal Emmanuel deemed “f*%#ing retarded” was a proposal by left-wing groups to attack Conservative Democrats who opposed Obamacare. In other words:He was arguing against attacks by the left on people who agree with you, Sarah! You silly twit.

The stuff Sarah had on her hand was connected to the answers she gave for the Q&A.

That means she knew what the questions were ahead of time.

Little disingenuous of her/them wasn’t it?

For an event like this, to be expected. Whatever. They got what they paid for.

Pity she isn’t an elected liberal of some kind, then Malkin would be set for the month.

re: #55 Walter L. Newton

One difference, you can have all of your speech on your TelePrompTer and even be in communication with your handlers, it’s hard to have everything you want to say written on the palm of your hand.

(Waiting for typical response in 5,4,3,2,1…)

Sarah Palin read her speech last night. She even carried it on stage with her. Not much difference between using a teleprompter and reading it and she didn’t even do a good job at that.

Because you see budget cuts would be actual fiscal responsibility where we reduce the deficit by spending less.

Tax cuts are “magic” where somehow the government makes more money by taking in less money!

Teleprompters, notes whatever.
I’d rather have have a speaker make sense when they are giving a speech.
I think Palin would sound less nuts if she did use the wordy box with it slooowly scrolling to slow her down. I think part of her problem is she has notes and talking points and then she just mashes them altogether in a crazy word salad that ends up not making any sense.

Regan was smart and used both notes, prepared speeches, wordy boxes and his skills as an actor. Smart people use the tools that allow them to not make fools of themselves.

Writing notes down on your hand about questions you should not know you are going to be asked? Kinda silly if you are not good at hiding the notes.

She is really and truly not a good speaker. That’s just what it is. Her sentences aren’t sentences. They are run on thought paragraphs. I don’t think that’s necessarily indicative of whether she’s a good leader or not, I mean that alone, but if you’re a politician, you really have to be a good speaker. She seriously needs coaching/training in this department.

98 TampaKnight  Sun, Feb 7, 2010 11:16:57am

I think many here give her way, way too much credit for how powerful she is. She’s riding a populist wave and there isn’t an election until 2012….the thing about populism is that it’s usually short lived.

Yes.

No, because what come out of his mouth once he has decided what to say makes sense. He can answer questions with ease and has a depth of knowledge that comes though.
The Q&A with the Republicans proves that.

Bill Clinton is a brilliant man (whether you agree with him or not, he’s a Rhodes scholar) but he always spoke “the people’s language”. I imagine that was his southern upbringing. I’m not being snarky about that LOL I mean it as southern hospitality or charm.

Well, I also wonder how much of it was a concerted effort to be folksy. People can put on different faces in different contexts. I doubt that Clinton was all “aw, shucks” in his cabinet meetings with the technocrats.

I heard the whole thing originally. My only complaint, he went way too long to answer certain questions. He could have been more succinct and to the point on a number of topics.

Other than that, it was a little more laid back than usual.

So would you say it counts as Obama

“doing a one on one, unrehearsed interview, back and forth questions and answers where he comes off smooth and confident and in control of the subject?”

Okay its not ‘one on one” but that seems like a silly qualification if you ask me at the moment…

re: #3 Walter L. Newton

This is so easy.

It’s the hypocrisy Walter. Going after the president for using a teleprompter when she uses cheat notes for a Q&A.

Also this morning on Fox, she defends Rush’s use of the R-word as satire. She actually said he wasn’t using it to trash a group of people that he happens to disagree with. Which of course was exactly the way he used it. She calls for Rhams resignation for using it in a private meeting, but when Rush does it over the airwaves to millions…its no big deal. It’s the hypocrisy

It was what Clinton was good at.
He is hella-brilliant, but is always able to take the esoteric wonky stuff and boil it down to the level a 10th grader can understand…that is when he was trying too, sometimes he just liked to drone on and on and on.

Without question. But after W, it was precisely Obama’s pedantic professorial approach that seemed such a breath of fresh air, and quite frankly, Presidential.

re: #63 marjoriemoon

Um… Sarah was looking at paper notes on the podium during her speech. What’s the difference between that and a teleprompter?

Yeah, that is the weirdest part of the conserva-blog push-back on this (National Review, Hotair, etc). For the duration of her speech, she clearly was staring at the podium, reading directly from prepared remarks, but the push-back pretends that she ad-libbed the entire thing with just a few words written on her hand.

Where she used the hand crib notes, nearly word-for-word, was during the “unscripted” Q&A (where they seem to have pre-screened out any politically embarrassing questions/topics like birtherism).

Oh, and I was just looking at the trending topics for this on Twitter. Some are pretty bland like #palinpalm and #palinhand, but one of the more popular ones is pretty funny: #telepalmer.

139 Vambo  Sun, Feb 7, 2010 11:43:15am

the difference is that it’s a $3,000 teleprompter.

Because she just writes her crib notes on the palm of her hand with a ball point pen.

And she writes on her forehead with a Sharpie. Those eyebrows have to go. Michelle Obama’s are pretty horrifying lately, too. I think it’s a secret plot by the makers of Sharpie to poison the brain cells of women in politics. So far, it’s been wildly effective on both Palin and Bachmann.

Every time I think Palin can’t get any dumber, pander more, or be more counterfeit - she exceeds my expectations. She’s consistent. Well… unless you include her employment record.

If those were her crib notes, she did pretty darn good. Their are so short, so general, and so expected, she might as well not have bothered. And what makes anybody think they were the “answers” to the questions she was to be asked. The article cited suggests they mean she had to know the questions in advance. Not really. Lets see, taxes, budget cuts (or not), energy, and her own stupid “lift American spirits” catch phrase. Sounds like she was getting her thoughts together pre show and used her hand as a scratch pad. Of course they were going to ask questions that would lead to these answers. It’s not as if she wrote 6.5 million, protozoan, Abner Doubleday. She’s a dork. She did a dorky thing. But I don’t think she was being hypocritical. There is no comparison between teleprompters on which an entire speech written by others is displayed and four brief notes written in your own hand intended to remind you of your talking points. Nor is there evidence of cheating. She wasn’t taking the SATs. She was giving a speech. She has a right to remind herself of what she wants to mindlessly drone on about. This is a non issue really. Funny, but silly.

Poiint is, EVERYONE knew those were going to be the questions. When I take a Soldier into the board, I know in advance what I am going to answer to the CSM’s questions, even though I don’t know precisely the questions. You can guess the general direction of the questions, then pre pick general enough answers that say what YOU want to say, without meaning much. That is what politicians, all of them, do. It is still a non issue. And we weren’t talking about the whole speech when I started typing this. Frankly I care less. She isn’t getting my vote any time soon. But people make too much of stupid stuff like this. Oh, and whoever dinged the young man for saying Obama uses his teleprompter too much, remember the grade school speech? He does. And it is stil a non issue. He can have a line prompter feeding him lines for all of me. As long as they are his ideas, he can present them as he likes. She harps on the whole teleprompter thing because everyone else is. She has no originality at all. Blech. Why are we bothering with her?

It would have been classier to use a small card, but yes - a brief list of key points is a very standard and recommended aid when delivering an address. In contrast, a speech aided by teleprompter is one that has been read off a computer screen. I wouldn’t make fun of the US President for using a teleprompter: he needs to give a lot of speeches under a lot more scrutiny. None the less, it’s certainly not hypocritical to say that Sarah Palin didn’t use one on this occasion, and if she gave a good speech ex tempore she deserves praise, not snark.

That story about Obama using the teleprompter to address a classroom of children, versus just chatting with them as Bush had, was a RW invention. The President and the Secretary of Education did, in fact, do a free-form Q&A/discussion with the the 6th graders. The podium and teleprompters where set up in a seperate classroom, with only members of the press present, for the President to deliver prepared remarks (after finishing with the students).

As has been covered many times in this thread, the hand crib notes were not used during her speech. She read them from her palm, during the Q&A section of the event, when asked about what the priorities should be when the conservatives take power. The hand crib notes demonstrated foreknowledge of the question as well as the fact that she seems to have been having trouble remembering what her basic legislative priorities are.

Also, rewatch any of the video out there of the actual podium speech part of her address. The reason her head is down, staring at the podium, is because she is reading from prepared remarks.

About Palin’s telepalmer:

The most embarrassing bit of this whole embarrassy-embarrassment concerns the content of those notes. She needs to write down “lift American spirits”?

This is the work of a highschool student trying to cheat on an essay exam, who is going to fail no matter what she writes, because her cheat sheet itself betrays a total confusion and jumbled mind. Palin is probably incapable of sitting down and writing out her own bullet points to summarise, well, anything.

No wonder she claimed to read ‘all of them!’ in that Couric interview. This is a woman who neither reads nor can think. Her bizarre speaking style isn’t something she can be coached out of: it’s the true expression of how she thinks, which is to say, she does not.
