Palin Thinking of Presidency in 2012, Cites Pat Buchanan

Sarah Palin, who quit her elected office as Governor of Alaska in the middle of her term, now says she’s considering running for President in 2012.

“I would, I would if I believe that is the right thing to do for our country and the Palin family. Certainly I would do so,” she told “Fox News Sunday,” in an interview that was taped before she addressed a Tea Party convention the night before. “I think that it would be absurd to not consider what it is that I could potentially do to help our country … . I won’t close a door that perhaps could be open for me in the future.”

In her interview with Fox News, she quoted … get ready for it … Pat Buchanan.

In her first Sunday show appearance, the 2008 vice-presidential candidate predicted that, if the election were held today, President Barack Obama would actually lose the office he won just a year-and-a-half ago. But — citing a column written by Pat Buchanan — she left open the possibility that his fates could change, particularly (she seemed to wish) if a major attack were to be launched against Iran.

And she topped it off by defending Rush Limbaugh’s use of the word “retard,” (with the patented “It’s satire!” gambit), reversing the criticism issued by one of her aides just a few days ago.

“They are kooks, so I agree with Rush Limbaugh,” she said, when read a quote of Limbaugh calling liberal groups “retards.” “Rush Limbaugh was using satire … . I didn’t hear Rush Limbaugh calling a group of people whom he did not agree with ‘f-ing retards,’ and we did know that Rahm Emanuel, as has been reported, did say that. There is a big difference there.”

But remember — no teleprompter! [twinkle]

Kooks = Retards is ok with Sarah? WTF?

I give her a 0% chance of winning the nomination. By then people will be begging for someone versed in economic matters, and her "betcha" bullshit will be old news by then.

Remember though -- Pat Buchanan has no influence on the right wing! And neither does Rush Limbaugh!

We just have the former GOP vice presidential candidate talking about running for President, quoting Pat Buchanan and backing off a criticism of Rush Limbaugh.

Palin's foreign policy platform = "We win, you lose!"

Domestic policy = "cut taxes"

else - "Divine intervention".

Ain't governing easy?

It already is. The media simply wants to keep her around because she sells advertising. Chris Wallace asked her for a 'you betcha' at the end of his interview this morning, and as she obliged, you could see the look on his face was one of "Oh. My. God. You really are just a trained pet."

I don't know why more conservatives don't just attack Limbaugh- I know that many of them disagree with what he says, and how he says it. His favorable ratings are poor across the country and his listenership is only like 8 million...big for radio but not HUGE.

Dude, Jeb Bush is a very, very smart man and would be a great candidate if he ran...it's a shame that the hatred for W would possibly shun that.

Because you can't trust the government...you need it, and it protects you, and it provides social services for you...but you can't trust it. Far better to trust private commercial companies with no self-interest to run the elections.

President Obama doesn't have 'enemies.' To have an enemy you must first agree to be an enemy. President Obama has adversaries, and people who are hell-bent on making him fail, but he doesn't think of them as 'enemies.' He sees them as the fools they are.

I am curious to see what happens if she campaigns for the Republican nomination. We've never seen her up against other conservatives. When she was running, she was the anointed one, and if anyone showed her up, they were the liberal attack team, and could be disregarded.

Now she speaks to crowds of adoring fans.

And frankly, I'm at a loss to remember when Palin really got grilled. "What do you read?" is the softball question of the century.

81 webevintage  Sun, Feb 7, 2010 11:37:25am

Grifter!Palin has already figured out that the whole governing part of being a politician is just too much work.
It is hard y'all even with Todd helping out.

What she has hit on is the best of all.
PACS, speaking fees, helping out a tea party candidate here and there, a gig on FOX...now that's the ticket.
Anytime she thinks her star is dimming she can figure out how someone is dissing one of her freaking kids and write a crazy Facebook screed about it and the next thing you know Sarah is in the spotlight again.

Smile coyly whenever someone asks if she will run...brilliant!

(Palin maybe lacking when it comes to an education that would be best for a President, but she is not stupid when it comes to what keeps Sarah's star out there shining and the little people begging for more. )

Not according to a poll.

84 lawhawk  Sun, Feb 7, 2010 11:37:56am

Well, of course she's thinking about 2012; that was one of the reasons she probably quit as AK governor - to raise money towards a presumptive bid. That's not a surprise. She's figuring that if she keeps catering to this base that it will give her advantages over other candidates. It might give her an advantage to build up the GOTV and grassroots. That's a big factor.

The problem is one of content. She might be catering to the Tea Party types, but they aren't the GOP, and they most certainly aren't the moderate and independent voters needed to win in a general election. Her negatives will only increase from here.

Well, that depends on how you define atheist. If someone doesn't believe in God but they do believe in other elements of the 'supernatural', it's the same problem. Likewise, if they don't really understand statistics and probability, they can't make very rational decisions about most public policies.

I'd rather have a smart religious person who considers religion a private matter than an atheist who doesn't understand the tragedy of the commons and the gambler's fallacy.

If the GOP is smart, they'll kick her to the curb as soon as possible. But they think the media circus that is Sarah Palin is in some way good for them...they know the racist, secessionist, faux-Christian bigots she appeals to will always vote Republican, and their hope is that she can suck a few more bottom-dwellers off the floor long enough to vote in the coming election. It doesn't matter if someone is religious if they don't use their religion to make practical decisions about actual real-world problems.

If they're heavily into their belief system, not having that belief system affect their real world decisions would be more than a little tough for them. Their religious stance also has an impact on their perceived honesty and can generate votes, so the belief system is important.

You and I may be rational enough to disregard their religiosity when making a voting decision, but that cannot be said of the extremist theocrats.

Yeah.
The buyer's remorse is from people who spent more time assuming Obama was running as a liberal progressive instead of the center left pragmatist he actually was.
They had their own preception and did not pay attention to what he was saying.
And I've got to say that until his 4 years are up I won't consider anything a "broken promise" except maybe Gitmo and even that will end. Anyone can say anything while running for office, but once in office reality rears its ugly head.
I even think that in 4 years DOMA and DADT will be gone and we will have the beginnings of real HCR.
The important thing is Congress and if the Dems decide to care more for their seats or more for getting things done.

I also think that Rush Limbaugh is an asshole, and that by giving him a pass, Sarah Palin has seriously undercut the idea that she's just defending her little boy, as opposed to using him to gain political points.

I'm also, although you did not ask for this input, sort of wishing you would stop making whatever point it is you've been repeated making about the use of the word 'retard'.

That's all.

I think it was *unwise* for Rahm to use it in a supposedly private conversation. I think it was *insensitive* for Rush to use it on his very popular radio show.

I see. So, it would be ok for Rahm to have used in an obviously public conversation? I don't understand the difference. It must be the nuance I'm missing. Yours is the most clever explanation for the difference between Rahm and Rush's use of the word.

Fine, but suppose she were running against, say, Dennis Kucinich. She may be stupid (she's not an idiot) but she's stupid in my direction. You gotta choose from what the election offers.

True, but Kucinich is stupid in a direction that even most Democrats don't favor. His performance in the 2004 and 2008 primaries is proof enough of that. He never got out of single digit poll numbers. Ever.

Sarah, on the other hand, could be a problem for the GOP unless the circumstances at the time demand a far more serious candidate to run against President Obama in 2012.

The thing about "open doors" is actually very similar to how she answered the same question (to Greta Van Susteren) just after the election:

Faith is a very big part of my life and putting, putting my life in my creator's hands. This is what I always do, I'm like OK God, If there is an open door for me somewhere - this is what I always pray - I'm like, don't let me miss the open door. Show me where the open door is and even if it's cracked up a little bit, maybe I'll just plow right on through that and maybe prematurely plow through it, but don't let me miss an open door. And if there is an open door in '12 or four years later, and if it is something that is going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I'll plow through that door.

If I may speak for myself--Rahm used it in a private setting, venting anger at political opponents. That does not stop me from thinking it tasteless, insensitive and juvenile, but...

Then comes Limbaugh, and he's got a head full of steam about the PC people, and their dumb PC ways, and he says the word a whole bunch of times, just because he can, and because his fans will love him for yelling 'retards' over and over.

I say that Limbaugh is a step beyond in terms of the tasteless, insensitive and juvenile.

None of which is relevant, except that Sarah apparently only cares about people using 'retard' as a term of abuse when it comes from the mouth of a political opponent. Stay classy, Sarah.

On another note though, I am becoming increasingly interested in just how the 2012 race for the WH will unfold.

So far, gay Americans are being routinely bashed, we have accusations of death panels and creeping SOCIALISM with respect to the mere notion of a national health plan, and there's the usual foaming at the mouth rants about 'Murica being a Christian Nation, something we're all used to hearing by now. More racists are crawling out from under their rocks, and there doesn't seem to be any reprieve from the birther loons.

Strangely, there hasn't been too many warnings of apocalyptic disaster befalling the US from Islamists. Perhaps that's on the back burner with respect to how it all plays out with Iran & Israel.

Seriously though, as ugly as politics will no doubt get, it's going to be very interesting.

Yeah. The buyer's remorse is from people who spent more time assuming Obama was running as a liberal progressive instead of the center left pragmatist he actually was.

They had their own preception and did not pay attention to what he was saying.

This is true. The folks I know on the left that are mad at Obama had this vision of him as someone who was farther to the left than he was letting on, but I have never seen that.

I've always had the sense that he was pretty open about being a pragmatist and moderate that he was, but people kept putting him in these boxes that just didn't fit. One more wacky theory - Pat grew up at a time and place when the Irish Catholic was just barely considered part of Team Whitey. His blood-and-soil-conservatism looks to me like he is twice as loyal to his conservative principals because he has something to prove, kind of like the only girl or black guy in the room in an advanced math class. They generally sit in front, take better notes, and are a little uncomfortable, realizing they have something to prove.

I love listening to old Pat arguing on MSNBC and reading his columns, but don't think anyone should give him any real power in government, anywhere, ever.

I don't think a candidacy is part of Palin's plans. Most likely, keeping that hope alive amongst her fans is the only aim, because it keeps those $100k speaker's fees rolling in. They're not gonna pay someone who's just a pundit that kind of money.

It's also possible that, like the Birchers and other extreme TP supporters and organizers, she's planning to use a potential candidacy to scuttle what the TPers view as a RINO GOP candidate - which would be pretty much anyone outside the TP circle. Although it's an identifiable strategy, it isn't at all clear that it's a workable one.

It's also pretty complicated and requires a good deal of planning and organization to pull such a stunt off. So I'm going with the first explanation.

What a depressing picture.
Just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Remember, Obama didn't materialize as a serious candidate until very late in the usual window, so you should keep hope alive. Someone equally wonderful might emerge from near obscurity.

I guess in the end, I'm morbidly curious at just how much blood letting will actually take place.

It really is another one of those issues. However, it is not that common, even in the hinterland. I have actually had the misfortune of eating dog in China at a business banquet in a backwater near Xingdao in Shandong Provice. Could have been any kind of meat the way it was presented. I didn't know what kind of meat it was when eating it, but likely would have done so anyway so as not to offend my hosts. In China dog meat is where eaten, raised for said purposes. Not like they eat the family pet.

The way we're already headed, primary foods are torn apart almost to the molecular level, and then reassembled into foodstuffs that have various desired characteristics - texture, shelf life, nutrient content and so on. It's rapidly getting to the point where the source hardly matters at all; it is completely unrecognizable by the time processing is completed. I mean, does a Chicken McNugget bear any resemblance at all to any actual piece of chicken you've ever encountered, apart from the name? Whatever it is could easily be replaced by ground up, extruded and suitably processed roach.

Much like Krusty Burger's Ribwich, which was discontinued when the animal it was made from went extinct:

Reporter: "You mean cows? Or chickens?"

Krusty: "Think smaller. With more legs."

Yeah, I've been thinking I'll look into hand-raised meat this spring, when the local farmer's market opens up.

A coworker raises chickens and we get eggs from her occasionally, but I haven't noticed much difference there.

I get my eggs right across the road here, chicken too...they both are different and outstanding in flavor...plus I love the faint crowing early in the morning...they have goats for meat over there too...this is 4.5mi from downtown ABQ

When I was a boy, we raised a calf (until spring) in my grandmother's basement. Annie's (we named her Orphan Annie) mother had died in childbirth on a very cold day.

Annie thought she was a "people". Would come up to a child and nudge the kid. When a full grown cow "nudges" a 40 lb child, it seems like more than a nudge.

We ate her. She was hand fed.

Actually, I have seen scenes like this in China, and you should know, that they are not remotely isolated to dogs. The Chinese do not respect animals that they breed for food in any way shape or form. The fact is the Chinese do not respect human rights in a way which you or I do, so it is a whole other discussion. That said, have you ever seen a North American large scale chicken operation? It is not much better and we should really take a hard look at our own practices before demanding changes of others. The truth is that China has far bigger fish to fry (pardon the pun) than the fate of animals bred for food there. Beyond that, I certainly would not even think of trying to "educate" my Chinese hosts when being treated graciously in a business or social setting.

Iran said Saturday it arrested seven people, including two Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operatives, who planned to stoke unrest and violence on a march scheduled for February 11.

The rally on Thursday will commemorate the 31st victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran.

Intelligence forces, according to Borna News Agency, arrested the men who had plans to leave the country for Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and then head to the United States.

According to the report, some of those arrested work for the US-backed Radio Farda, a Persian language station based in Prague and Washington.

For me, not so much. I grew up with named animals as pets. I had to go out of my way to not name my chickens at first it because I knew what the end game was. Made it through that hurdle today actually. Several went bye bye and at least two of them will be back in the freezer a few days from now. For instance, a year ago she had no opinions on foreign policy because she neither knew nor cared about it. Now she has the opinions that other people have told/suggested that she have. She is the voice to spread those opinions and, they are speculating, to lead the country on those opinions.

I don't mean to suggest that there is some particular conspiracy here, just that there are plenty of people on the far right who probably see her as a tool to their advantage exactly because she only cares about the limelight, not about any actual policies, so they could manipulate her. Look at the Bush II presidency. He was himself fairly harmless. Palin--she is essentially even weaker than GWB, and without backers, whose mouthpiece (and more) she could become, she would be harmless. If she were suddenly made president and had nobody to control her, she would be utterly incapable of doing anything and... well, people would have to step in behind the scenes and make sure things got done. The things they wanted.

That is why I am afraid of Sarah Palin. That and her slightly wacked-out Christianism, like the whole "there cannot be AGW because God made the world for us to live in and he wouldn't let us mess it up." Just the same way that he wouldn't let us create nuclear weapons that would destroy all life on the entire planet, right Sarah? Note that Rush has taken this up as well, as the idiots feed off of one another.

Well Bush had that little color codded warning system, and I think there were studies that show support for him went up when it did.

So as vile as it is I suppose you could argue the "war card" works...

I agree with you. I think the term is mostly valid. That's the reason we go to war, it's not something I'm making up, I can link you to a number of quotes and concepts that support that.

My agreement with it being "vile" is the way the concept would effect a family that has other family members in an active war or service. To them, it can be vile.

But there is no way to ignore the truth in the concept, as much as it hurts.

Not only that... it's their culture... there is nothing wrong with eating dog... it's just not something most of us care to do. There is nothing wrong with it.

There was actually some lively debate on this amongst the expats I hung out with in China years ago. Dog meat, was certainly out of favour in the Urban areas, particularly Beijing, Shanghai etc. But it was an inexpensive food source in other parts of the country. So the growing distaste for it was argued by some to be a sort of side effect of economic imperialism or internationalism. Time will tell if dog will remain a staple in any part of the country, but a growing middle class imposing its new morality on the underclass may relegate it to a nostalgic pastime in the future.

I just so happen to have a poem about food prejudice...(I just so happen to have a poem about a lot of topics)

An Epicure For What Ails You
.
It seems the foods that gourmets like are really unappealing.
Like escargot and goose paté, or aspic that's congealing.
Life is much the same, I've found. The things that look the worst,
are rarely as atrocious as they appear at first.
.
Perhaps, I should approach my life just like a gourmet cook,
with hope that things are tastier the nastier they look.

Agreed. Confined animal feeding operations (CAFO) are good for only one thing: economies of scale in meat production. They stink. They are cruel. hey are environmental nightmares. They routinely use antibiotics, tiny portions of which you eat.

Ick. I buy organic and free range.

For cows, the antibiotics are a necessity. They are fed almost entirely on corn, which cows aren't adapted to eat. It causes their stomach to overproduce acid, which causes ulcers, which provide an entry point for all manner of infections into the animal's bloodstream. They're given just enough antibiotics to ensure that this doesn't prevent them from gaining enough weight and that they live just long enough to reach slaughter.

The use of subclinical doses of antibiotics in this manner has been outlawed in most of Europe and in several other countries. It is a perfect breeding ground for antibiotic-resistant bacteria to develop and spread.

The small residual amounts left in the flesh doesn't bother me near as much as what the practice may wind up producing in terms of future plagues.

To be fair, I think she was just saying, if he is to have a chance (at reelection) this is what will get him re-elected. Not that she actually thinks he should start a war but rather, if he did, it would beneifit him politically. But she says everything in such a muddled and inept way it is impossible to tell what she is really thinking. Thus it is easy to conclude she is thinking nothing or that she is saying anything. Interesting twist on Palin getting the nomination based on Nate Silver's look at a recent poll of the GOP. It's fairly easy to just hit the talking points since there is so much agreement across all the GOP demographics.

"This accounts for what might be the Republicans' greatest strength as we head into the November midterms as well as their greatest liability. The strength is that they can somewhat comfortably adopt a nationalized, one-size-fits-all message. They don't have to worry about the constellation of constituencies that Democrats have: labor voters, Baby-boomer liberals, blacks, Hispanics, college-educated technocrats, libertarianish younger voters, etc. Their base is the same pretty much everywhere, and actuating a strategy that appeals to that base is not challenging."

Gita Sahgal, head of the gender unit at Amnesty’s international secretariat, believes that collaborating with Moazzam Begg, a former British inmate at Guantanamo Bay, “fundamentally damages” the organisation’s reputation.

In an email sent to Amnesty’s top bosses, she suggests the charity has mistakenly allied itself with Begg and his “jihadi” group, Cageprisoners, out of fear of being branded racist and Islamophobic.

Sahgal describes Begg as “Britain’s most famous supporter of the Taliban”. He has championed the rights of jailed Al-Qaeda members and hate preachers, including Anwar al-Awlaki, the alleged spiritual mentor of the Christmas Day Detroit plane bomber.

One big problem in addition to everything else like quitting in the middle of her term and still not providing a compelling reason.

Assuming Obama is really vulnerable in 2012, part of his failures will likely be based on his youth and relative inexperience. Does it really make sense that America would turn to someone even younger and less experienced?

To be fair, I think she was just saying, if he is to have a chance (at reelection) this is what will get him re-elected. Not that she actually thinks he should start a war but rather, if he did, it would beneifit him politically. But she says everything in such a muddled and inept way it is impossible to tell what she is really thinking. Thus it is easy to conclude she is thinking nothing or that she is saying anything. As Bugs would say, "What a maroon!"

Don't agree. Although I'm Independent, I generally vote Repub in Presidential elections and most of my family and friends are Republicans. There is HUGE variance. We are not Palin's base. And it is no easier to apppeal to Repubs than it is to appeal to Dems. They are not a monolithic thinkbot.

The polling says otherwise. Certainly there are folks in the GOP base that are pro life, support global warming, aren't birther's and the rest, but they are way less diverse a base then the Dems are. Just look at the smaller percentage of younger or minority voters for example.

Religion has nothing to do with political stances (to me and like minded religious people).

I agree with you. There is no room for religion in politics, of course, and there is a lot of room for decent values and common sense. I quit believing in God since age 13 maybe but atheism did not become a religion for me. Some atheists like Bill Maher perhaps, look cool but act like preachers sometimes. re: #544 Alouette

Anytime.

Alouette's Chicken Wings

Pack of chicken wings

2 garlic cloves, grated
1” piece of fresh ginger, grated
1 Tbsp. Cajun seasoning
1 Tbsp. soy sauce
2 Tbsp. cooking wine

1 Tbsp. cornstarch
2 Tbsp. bread crumbs
1 tsp. sesame seeds

Mix garlic, ginger, Cajun seasoning, soy sauce and cooking wine and soak wings for ½ hour.
Mix cornstarch, bread crumbs and sesame seeds. Shake over wings.

Arrange wings on a broiler pan and broil under High setting for 20 min. Turn over and broil for another 15 min. When wings look like they are burned, they are done.

That would work on a thigh too...

13 minutes if there are no penalties.

Naw, that's baseball that has 13 minutes of action crammed into a 3 hour game.

Football would be at least 60 minutes long.
Except after every 5 to 10 seconds they seem to stop the clock for something or another, so the game goes on for 3 hours or so.

[...] Benjamin is right, sort of. There is an unspoken race dimension to the Tea Party Movement, as there was to Scott Brown’s Senate victory and the Palin phenomenon. It’s what you get when you try to abolish an historic nation through immigration policy. Whites, formerly known as “Americans”, will band together, explicitly or implicitly, to defend their interests.

Sheesh. And they continue in that article's comments section too. On just the first page of 34 pages there was a comment stating "good" and then there was this:

Why do we have to like sports to live in this country, or anyplace on this planet? There are many countries that can't even afford a professional sports team. Some can't even afford sports on a local or school level. Think of how unfair it is to a person or child in a third world country how wants to play golf, and the ground is so arid and dry that they can't even dig a little hole, or build a water trap... imagine a whole golf course in the Middle East with just sand, and no holes.

No, if we are going to place such a big emphasis on sports, then we should have some foreign aid program in place to span the globe to bring them a constant variety of sport! The thrill of victory...and the agony of defeat! The human drama of athletic competition!

That's what America should be all about.

re: #540 Walter L. Newton

13 minutes if there are no penalties.

You are close. Off by 2 minutes!

According to a Wall Street Journal study of four recent broadcasts, and similar estimates by researchers, the average amount of time the ball is in play on the field during an NFL game is about 11 minutes.

In other words, if you tally up everything that happens between the time the ball is snapped and the play is whistled dead by the officials, there's barely enough time to prepare a hard-boiled egg. In fact, the average telecast devotes 56% more time to showing replays.

So what do the networks do with the other 174 minutes in a typical broadcast? Not surprisingly, commercials take up about an hour. As many as 75 minutes, or about 60% of the total air time, excluding commercials, is spent on shots of players huddling, standing at the line of scrimmage or just generally milling about between snaps. In the four broadcasts The Journal studied, injured players got six more seconds of camera time than celebrating players. While the network announcers showed up on screen for just 30 seconds, shots of the head coaches and referees took up about 7% of the average show.

If you think the networks are a little too fond of cheerleaders, you may be mistaken: In these broadcasts, only two networks showed cheerleaders at all. And when they did, they were only on camera for an average of three seconds. "We make it a point to get Dallas cheerleaders on, but otherwise, it's not really important," says Fred Gaudelli, NBC's Sunday Night Football producer. "If we're doing the Jets, I couldn't care less."

Nobody here at LGF. Pat Buchanan said it first, and Sarah apparently agreed with him that if Obama played "the war card," he might get re elected.

They're both probably cribbing from Daniel Pipes:
How to Save the Obama Presidency: Bomb Iran

Ugg, here's the "War Card" clip:

Actually, is it possible Palin is mis-attributing Pipe's recent Iran article to Buchanan? A quick search of Buchanan's recent writings seems to show him opposed to war with Iran, and even against sanctions.

Not that Daniel Pipes would be much of an improvement. Pipes was one of the folks obsessed with documenting Obama's childhood contacts / connections with Muslims in an attempt to cast him as some sort of Islamic Manchurian Candidate.

Now we know the answer to that Katie Couric question about what she reads -- Pat Buchanan's columns.

Delusions of grandeur! Still, I recall when people ridiculed right-wingers Ronald Reagan and Menachem Begin ... though nobody ever called Begin dumb ...

I've read comparisons between Palin's positioning within the GPO and Jesse Jackson's role within the Democratic Party during his heyday. I think a better analogy is with Al Sharpton, though one happy side effect of Obama's ascendency has been the total marginalization of Sharpton outside of New York politics. Like Palin, Sharpton's politics are based on stoking racial resentments and blaming the "other" for all of your ills. At least Jackson never blamed everything on white people, the broader political culture, etc., but regularly called out his own community over things like racy song lyrics, school dropout rates, etc. I see nary a whiff of self-criticism with Palin and her followers, just the usual victimology and self-pity of those who have sunk to the bottom of history's judgment.
