What a great blog. Where else would yo ever see the phrase "Mandolin shredding", and find it to be precisely the correct description?

Growing up my fav mandolin player was a guy named Andy Statman. He could play bluegrass in the Monroe and McReynolds style and do straight out bebop. He inspired me to pick up the instrument at 16. He's the third guy from the left with the yarmulke on - watch him start playing outside the key and weaving it all back in, inside outside, Dolphy is laughing in his grave. Amazing sense of harmony. He also leads an great klezmer band.

Mandolin is a easy instrument to pick up... very hard to play.

I really like this song and haven't heard it in forever. But it was usually played on fife and drum for me. Great upbeat tune!

A nice primer on making homemade pasta: On Making Homemade Pasta

It is surprisingly easy once you get the hang of it and it's infinitely better than the dried pasta you buy in the stores. There's a very nice collection of pasta recipes on the same blog here. The Calabrian Hot Pepper Pasta and Acorn or Chestnut Flour Pasta look particularly interesting.

I enjoy making sweet potato pasta. Bake a medium sweet potato (or nuke in the microwave for 7-8 minutes) until cooked completely through. Allow it to cool and the skin will come off easily. Make sure your sweet potato is completely cooled before mix with eggs and flour. You can put it in the fridge to speed things along. Once cooled mix the sweet potatoes, egg, flour ( I use semolina) and a pinch of salt. You will need to account for a little extra flour in your recipe because there’s moisture in the sweet potato.
It adds a lot of nutritional value and fiber to regular pasta and it’s delicious.
I like his idea of adding red pepper. I’ll give that a try with my sweet potato pasta.

Could care less who he hires/ fires. It IS his team.

What I chuckle about is him thinking he's a football person, instead of a business man.

Best times the team has had is when he allows football people (Jimmy Johnson,,,Bill Parcells) to make football decisions

Tomatillo plants are beautiful. We have some Swiss Chard that's three years old. Just one plant from the original row that keeps coming back The seeds were "Rainbow Chard", that had I think three different colors of chard. That was pretty. Our garden is in the front yard so that's a consideration.

I'd love it if they just turned over the Cleveland Browns to me for 1 year as a GM..What have they got to lose?
I'd draft Character.. then Athleticism..I remember Montana in the Cotton Bowl in College and going.. Holy Cow! This guy is Special! He has heart! He has Character! He is a Playa!
Give me the Browns one year Lizards!

I always pull for the down and out teams, and Cleveland is an original old dog...I don't know what the hell their problems are over there...it's abusive to the fans when all you do is depend on ticket sales and to hell with the product....same with the Lions, the Fords are just in a stupor while the fans pick up the tab

On a world affairs note, Iran is promising a "punch" to the West on Feb 11th.

Any thoughts?

I hope they're lying.

Word on the street is if Iran tries anything with a certain Chosen people, all the Arab radar systems will be looking the other way when Israel brings their guns to a knife fight. No Arab state will (either be able to or want to) stop anything Israeli in its airspace as long as its on its way to Iran.

I can't think of teams other than the Steelers and Packers that have stayed close to their roots. Pittsburghers don't even want anyone else to like the Steelers.

Racer X wakes up with a huge hangover after attending a Super Bowl Party. Racer X is not normally a drinker, but the drinks didn't taste like alcohol at all.

He didn't even remember how he got home from the party.
As bad as he was feeling, he wondered if he did something wrong.

Racer X had to force himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins next to a glass of water on the side table.

And, next to them, a single red rose!! Racer X sits up and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed. He looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotlessly clean. So is the rest of the house.

He takes the aspirins, cringes when he sees a huge black eye staring back at him in the bathroom mirror.

Then he notices a note hanging on the corner of the mirror written in red with little hearts on it and a kiss mark from his wife in lipstick: 'Honey, breakfast is on the stove, I left early to get groceries to make you your favorite dinner tonight. I love you, darling!

Love, Trixie'

He stumbles to the kitchen and sure enough, there is hot breakfast, steaming hot coffee and the morning newspaper.

His 16 year old son is also at the table, eating. Racer X asks, 'Son ... what happened last night?'

'Well, you came home after 3 A.M. , drunk and out of your mind. You fell over the coffee table and broke it, and then you puked in the hallway, and got that black eye when you ran into the door.

Confused, he asked his son, 'So, why is everything in such perfect order and so clean? I have a rose, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me??'

His son replies, 'Oh THAT... Mom dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your pants off, you screamed, 'Leave me alone, I'm married!!'
