Tech Note: Retweet Code Revamp

Technology • Views: 3,139

Here’s an email I recently received from the URL-shortening service bit.ly, a popular Twitter-related service that I use to automatically shorten URLs for LGF-related tweets. The nice thing about bit.ly (and j.mp, it’s the same service) is that it doesn’t just shorten URLs; if you register an account, it also tracks some interesting statistics for any URLs you shorten. And they make these statistics available to outside developers through the bit.ly API; this is how our Retweet buttons are able to show the number of clicks on each shortened link.

But apparently, LGF has been hammering their API servers too hard.

Hi,

I’m writing in regards to your bit.ly API usage. You are making an unusually large number of shorten requests to our API (often over 50,000/hour), and it looks like you are doing this on page load (for the Twitter button on pages such as littlegreenfootballs.com).

Normally it is best not to make /shorten requests on a page load, but instead to make a /shorten request to bit.ly when a user clicks a share button. You can find an example of that at code.google.com. We are increasing our application of rate limits to manage abusive API users, and we encourage you to make the above fix as soon as possible to ensure that your site continues to function normally. I’d be glad to discuss this further and/or answer any questions you have, and thanks for using bit.ly!

The problem was related to the John Resig Retweet button, which I wrote about in this Tech Note. When the LGF home page loaded, the Retweet button Javascript code called the bit.ly API’s “shorten” function to find out the shortened URL, followed by the “stats” function to get the number of clicks, for each post, every time the page was loaded. As you can imagine, with 80,000 to 120,000 pageviews a day, that’s a lot of API calls. No wonder they noticed it.

I’ve vastly reduced the number of API calls now with the latest code refactoring of the Retweet button. I stopped using John Resig’s Javascript code (no hard feelings, it’s great for most sites but not LGF), and wrote my own jQuery routines that use Ajax to call a server-side script when the page loads, passing it the necessary data on every Retweet button in the page in JSON format. The Ajax server calls the API’s “stats” function, then sends back (again in JSON) the number of clicks and some other data. The jQuery code then displays those numbers in the Retweet buttons.

The key to reducing our API calls is that the shorten function is only called once, not when the page loads but when a new entry is posted to the LGF blog. The shortened URL is used to automatically tweet about the new post on Twitter, then it’s saved along with the new entry data, to be reused endlessly as needed without ever calling the API again.

Previously, the Resig code would call the API’s “shorten” routine and the “stats” routine for every post. Now the PHP Ajax server uses the saved bit.ly (or j.mp) URL to call the API’s “stats” routine only, which should cut our API usage in half. And retrieving statistics should be a much less costly operation for the server than shortening a URL. Hopefully, this will bring us back within the bit.ly API usage limits.

And since this is probably Venusian to most LGF readers, consider it an open thread from here on out…

Just FYI, Charles, LGF has been running like molasses for me today, both at home and here at the office. On W7-Pro/Chrome at home, WXP-pro/Chrome/&Firefox at work.

Most obvious thing is that page initially takes a long time to display, after that, refreshing comments, posting, checking karma all takes a long time as well.

Not a complaint, just informing.

I’m liking two other little tweaks I noticed recently. One is the way I get a new tab instead of a pop up when I check a profile in the Master Spy window, and the other is how, when I’m looking at a single comment, and I click on the link to the comment being replied to, it goes to that comment in the same tab instead of opening a new tab.

Maybe that second one was always like that….

Yes, but the government helped do that, and, as we all know, that delegitimizes the achievement. True innovation only comes from private enterprise.

It seems like “landing a man on the moon” is supposed to be the most difficult achievement that was ever accomplished by the human race.

In fact “landing a man on the moon” was just a matter of calculating trajectories and constructing equipment that could launch those trajectories. It was by no means a feat of difficulty that all other human accomplishments are to be judged by.

You are getting on my last nerve.

Though this still completely ignores my bigger point of how sometimes the fact that “you can’t please a lefty” may be a good thing because it drives us to try and always do things bigger and better.

I was listening to public radio, WLRN in Miami yesterday for a bit.

wlrn.org

They were talking about the economy and jobs. I can’t recall who they were (maybe it’s in the link), but a few points I recall.

1) Jobs for women have increased. There was speculation about women being paid lower so they’re being hired first. Many on the panel poo-poo’d that. They said since there is less men working, women are working more (see #2).

2) There isn’t much of a job shift for men because so many of the blue collar jobs are in construction and there is none.

3) Retail has risen a slight bit but not much.

4) They also said something about “poaching”. Stealing good, long standing employees from another firm. Although, wouldn’t that person’s job then become available? They didn’t talk about that.

That’s where the jobs are.

And, if you understand anything about state and local governments, first off, most of these projects were already in the “pipeline.” Most state and local government already have their favorite contractors on hook, who will get these projects most of the times. And it’s the project managers and engineers who benefit most financially.

Most of these projects would have be started or continued whether or not there was stimulus money. And, the actual number of NEW jobs created from these project is small… and the people at the bottom of the feeding cycle are getting minimum wage to preform these tasks.

Really, you need to understand the reality of what goes on in your state and local governments before you just look at these figures and accept that this is some new and wonderful advancement towards renewed employment paradise.

It’s not.

The idea is that if you spend federal money on say a infrastructure development project in a town, the people who are given those jobs then have more money to spend which further fuels job growth and wealth in the community.

Its kinda like trickle-down economics, except you give the extra money to the middle class instead of the rich.

Talk show host Neal Boortz, when tax time rolls around each year, has a canned rant about taxpayers. Ask people how much they paid in income tax. If they answer “Oh, I didn’t have to pay this year; I got a refund,” then they should be kicked off the voting rolls.

Yeah…except I pay other taxes. I may get a small refund but, it’s far less than the total taxes I had to pay.

Stimulate private enterprise with tax cuts and incentives. Right now small businesses are concerned about who will pay for the health care bill, and what will their tax liabilities look like in the future. That is scary - so they are not in a mood to expand and grow.

Road work jobs are OK - but it is government work. Real (quantities of) jobs come from the private sector.

201 jamesfirecat  Tue, Feb 9, 2010 5:53:30pm

Okay let me lay this all out again as my simplified view of economics which could be wrong….

At the moment our economy is in a tail spin, there are fewer jobs out there.

Because there are fewer jobs out there, fewer people have money.

Because fewer people have money, their is less to spend.

Because people are spending less, companies cut back on the number of products they make to avoid being left with excess inventory.

As the companies produce less they shed even more jobs which only makes things worse.

The government can inject money into the system by creating new jobs.

These new jobs give people who otherwise wouldn’t have a source of income, one which gives them money to buy products.

This lets them buy things, which makes companies want to produce more things, and thus creates a self sustaining cycle headed the other way, letting the government ease back on spending.

Remember the Great Depression was a time of HORRIBLE DEFLATION thus a little inflation being created by government spending might not be the worst thing in the world.

I fail to see how taxing people who don’t have jobs slightly less will insure that their unemployment checks strech far enough to let them restimulate the economy.

My Two cents.

What does a job have to do for you to qualify it as “productive”?

Man, don’t even bother. The Rage Virus is In The Air Tonight,

My social services/health care job was created by the government. It’s not a government job, but it’s services contracted and paid for by the state, to a non-profit, to care for a vulnerable population that would otherwise not get services. The state pays outright for the services.

Government created job!

WOW!

Dave Barry has a theory about feminism. He thinks that men invented civilization to get out of doing housework. He further thinks that the women’s movement can be blamed on one dumb bastard who took the whole thing too far. He came home from work one day and said “Man, I had a really rough day at the office honey. Will you make me a martini and rub my feet?”

His wife thought, “Heck, I’ve been scraping spider eggs out from under the toilet all day, and he had a rough day? I’ve got to see this office thing for myself.”

The jig was up later that day, and women have flatly refused to to back to the way things were.

The WLRN show I mentioned upthread also discussed bringing more jobs back to the states, but they made some odd comments. Clothing is almost completely made in China or Taiwan, even by U.S. companies because it’s a lot cheaper, so they see those jobs as “lost forever.” (I would throw in phone service, banks, airlines, etc). Basically they said anything you can buy in Walmart are jobs lost here forever.

I don’t really agree. The whole thing was pretty boring and uneventful. Liberals seemed to get all fired up, I guess because he didn’t come across as a moron. Obama sounded like an intelligent person! I would say that they need to set their sights higher, but 99% of the US does not think Obama is a moron (even if they also do not think he is a citizen, oops). Well ideally in my mind the way it would work is that US citizens would have to pay more for goods not made in America. Though I suppose you’re saying if we did that then it would upset those other countries because we’re making their goods less atractive in our markets?

No. Rather, I think that in any televised event Obama has two T’s in his favor:

1. Title. He is the President of the United States. That title gives him top billing and guarantees that even Fox News will give him more attention than anyone..

2. TOTUS. We may make fun of it here, but a televised event give Obama his teleprompter and with a prepared speech he is very good.

As I understood it was going to be a summet, so while he might give a nice opening speech with the aid of the TOTUS, that will give him a nice lead out of the gate, I think that if he’s going to maintain that lead he’ll have to be ready to handle whatever questions/issues /ideas the Republicans can bring to the table.

His showing at the Q&A seems to suggest that Obama can do just that once before I hope he can do it again.

That said I won’t disagree with your first advantage. I think (I hope) in the minds of most Americans, the congress should be trying to generally pull in the direction that the president wants, make his ideas better, but not just stone wall them.

Elections should have consequences and all that instead of a gigantic fillibuster gridlock.

The cost of labor isn’t the end-all be-all in the outsourcing equation. A nation needs law and order a stable government and a functional legal system, good infrastructure, cheap and plentiful energy. Some industries are very energy intensive and the cost of labor is a small component. For them its not a slam dunk decision to relocate to China or India where energy is expensive and utilities can be unreliable and local authorities have to be bought off to go along.

ITs not something that can be fixed really. The market has its logic. THere are conditions which could make it change though. They include, China making the RMB a freely fluctuating currency, Oil prices getting excessively high (higher even than the spike last year) and rising wages and standard of living in China and in other parts of the world.

Other than that, consumer behaviour has an impact. Clothing is really all in CHina. Except look at all the high end Jeans sold now that are manufactured in the USA or in Japan. When people are willing to pay for it, US manufacturers can succeed. Just likely not at Walmart prices.

Like I said tariffs were what was on teh top of my mind as an attempt at an easy answer.

As an attempt at a better one, we can’t even hope to stop globilization, the US economy needs to figure out what its sweet spot is, what we do best and then gear towards doing as much of that as possible…

re: #393 Dark_Falcon

I think Varek has a card for that. :)

There’s this…

And my favorite;
Locate City Bomb.

locate city (RoD) - 10 mile/level radius, finds a city

1. apply snowcasting (FB) - spell now has the cold descriptor
2. apply flash frost feat (PHB2) - spell now deals 2 points of cold damage to all in area (and makes area slippery but we don’t care about that)
3. apply energy substitution (electricity) (CArc) - spell now deals electricity damge
4. apply born of three thunders (CArc) - spell deals half electric, half sonic, but what is important is that it now requires a reflex save, allowing us to…
5. apply explosive spell (CArc) - all creatures/things in area that fail their reflex saves are shunted to the outside of the area of effect (10 miles/level) and take 1d6 damage per 10’ moved!

Voila, you have just nuked an entire kingdom with a 4th level spell slot, a handful of snow and a silly combination of feats. Of course you have to be creative as well to not get shunted 200 miles yourself, or end up with a thousand tons of debris and bodies on top of you.

So, the characters that have died, but remain not buried, they are possessed by this dark god like guy?

No… not possessed… The Nemesis is able to take on the likeness of a dead person who is not buried… but there is no possession involved at all. The Nemesis’s real form is The Smoke Monster. Even the “man in black” you saw is probably The Smoke Monster taking on the form of somebody long gone.

Before you ask… we don’t have enough info to know if Jacob’s form is real, or simply another simulacrum like the other “visions.”

re: #164 windsagio

The idea is that if you spend federal money on say a infrastructure development project in a town, the people who are given those jobs then have more money to spend which further fuels job growth and wealth in the community.

Its kinda like trickle-down economics, except you give the extra money to the middle class instead of the rich.

Nice description windsagio.

Here’s another: In the theory of interdependent systems in economics variables in one period (time t) feeding into variables in the next period (time t+1), and a constant rate of flow yields geometric series, which computes a multiplier.

I’d actually argue for Obama being willing to make concessions. but for that to work, Republicans have to be willing to give some things as well, and sadly, I think the GOP representatives will instead posture for the teabaggers. To actually concede anything to OBama right now would be to be called a RINO.

Now that I can perfectly agree with.

Rant switch to *on*
When it comes to offshore manufacturing I can cite jewelry making as an example. Not only do we fail to match trade barriers found in places like China and India, we leave criminal behaviors such as patent and trademark violations to the civil legal system. Or manufacturing fraud. An American Jewelry maker went offshore. When his Chinese jewelry factory under karats (13.5 kt instead of 14kt) or a half carat diamond ring has .41 carat of diamonds, the American company that commissioned the work gets blamed by the end customer (in this case the military stores). But all the American company can do is sue them. After losing the ability to sell to the US military.

Need I remind us all of the consequences of trusting Chinese quality control? Lead paint on childrens toys. Bad tires, cat food, toothpaste. Microsoft can not protect windows. No record label can protect its IP or its artists work. Now they substitute cadmium for lead in cheap jewelry.

Bring the work to our hemishpere, our own nation and we can avoid all that. We have an FTC, FDA, OSHA, FCC, etc etc. We have an EPA and AQMD. We can do it better. Given all the above do we really want that much cheaper?

From Jalopnik…

The Ordnungspolizei (Orpo) was the name for the uniformed regular German police force in existence during the period of Nazi Germany, notably between 1936 and 1945. It was increasingly absorbed into the Nazi police system. Owing to their green uniforms, they were also referred to as Grüne Polizei (green police).

Which somehow makes perfect sense given that this is an ad by Audi, i.e. Volkswagen’s luxury brand.

Also we need to turn down the tone in Washington, as Obama said, if you’re gonna paint him as a communist then there’s no wiggle room left for you to work with him on anything without getting crucified by your base.

Hell Christ is getting that treatment (unintentional joke) just for hugging the guy….

Oh, and for those of you who think that I and the other moderate liberals on the site are kidding about not being moonbats, I introduce you to the upcoming moonbat equivalent of the Teaparty Convention: The Strategy Conference of Liberals and Progressives.

Read it and weep. I did.

So far he’s turned out nothing, nor do I expect him to. He’s a nasty comic personality, more attack dog than legislation mover.

What about the amendment about how women who had been rapped by employees of their company can sue rather than being forced to settle for arbitration?

One thing stands out to me - yes when R’s were in power D’s did not fillibuster near as much. Meaning the D’s were nicer. Perhaps it was because the R’s worked with the D’s and were more flexible? Or perhaps the D’s just rolled over?

And perhaps when the D’s are in power they do not get the R’s involved as much in the legislative process? And the R’s get bitchy about that.

Just thinking out loud.

In my opinion, Al Franken was a disgrace long before he got to Washington. And he hasn’t done a thing to change my opinion.

Not at the moment , still working on my college degree, afterwards I may use my computer programming to go into the defense business, Predator Drones that fly themselves!

And you are telling 50+ year old people who have worked in various industries for longer than you have been alive, how to go about finding a job?

I’d tell you to piss up Mandy’s rope, but, you are probably not even toilet trained.

Yes Lizards.. The Super Bowl party was so loud and fun I never saw one ad..
I am fast forwarding The game on Tivo.. I can’t watch the game ever again..
Where is the software to allow me to rip all the commercials out of the game and compile them? If the Colts would have won I could have saved hours of stuff on DVD.. It all gets deleted this week.. I had a ton of stuff recorded

“Disgrace” is the most laughable and overused word in politics.

Everyone’s a disgrace. Everyone’s shameful. Everybody panic. Everyone hands in the air like a sinking ship. we’re all doomed. It’s the Titanic. The brink deep. Look out, a wonk from show biz was elected as junior Senator of Minnesota. Molly Brown floats by on a rowboat, the senior Senator from Atlantis has the floor.

I think the safer bet is to say that a great deal of it is because D’s rolled over.

Maybe I’ll just forget the entire Sar tag system and instead throw up great big (JOKE) parrens just to be on the safe side

Not at the moment (I’M TOO CHICKEN/OUT OF SHAPE!) But maybe after I finish my degree (ITS IN COMPUTER SCIENCE) I’m thinking about getting a job in defense (NOT REALLY) designing Predator drones that fly themselves (SKYNET!)

540 Glenn Beck's Grand Unifying Theory of Obdicut  Tue, Feb 9, 2010 8:02:09pm

re: #539 jamesfirecat

Well, that’d probably help, in a baffling way.

I think the thing is that it’s not really a joke. They are working on predator drones that fly themselves, and that’d be a natural thing for a CS major to get into. So there’s no way anyone should know you’re being sarcastic— except that you come off as really sarcastic all the time. So people basically get frustrated trying to figure out if your’e always sarcastic, or never. Because it’s really hard to tell.

I dunno, man. Sometimes I just can’t figure for the life of me why you’d say what you just said.

But the CS degree is a clue. (
