Question for those participating in the open thread:
Why do you upding? Why do you downding?
My answers:
Upding -
- good, substantive arguments from either/any side
- extremely funny posts
- answers to my questions
Downding -
- trolling
- flaming, insults, or namecalling
- offensive comments
- repeating arguments that have already been refuted earlier in the thread
I don't up/downding just for agreement or disagreement.

I upding/downding roughly similar to your listed standards. I do bend that occasionally regarding well-stated posts that I agree on the position with to give them an up-ding.
I also usually do not up-ding/down-ding older postings. Once a thread comment gets more than a few hours old I won't touch it (or respond to it) unless I feel a really powerful need to.

What Conservatism Is--and Isn't
Much of what is now called conservatism is nothing but right-wing liberalism. Conservatism is not opposition to homosexual marriage or abortion or premarital sex or post-modernism or socialism. It is not fundamentalism, six-day creationism, Republicanism, or even the commitment to spread democracy. Conservatism is not reactionary—it is traditional, but not for tradition’s own sake. The idea of conservatism is something much greater than any one of these things, or even of any combination of them. It is an idea that not only can be spread across the globe, but actually does exist in every culture to varying degrees. In fact, it is that idea most natural to a sufficiently humble, sane man. It is not concerned primarily with politics, but with the polis. Conservatism is essentially the realization that the individual is a part of a world larger than himself, a member of a community of other individuals, and within a flow of time that extends in both directions past his own existence, with the conclusion that he thus owes something to his world, his community, and to those who have preceded him and those who will succeed him.

Sounds like you have a good system. As long as a Lizard is consistent in how dinging is applied, there can be little chance of it being taken the wrong way. However, this is how I roll....
In keeping with the philosophy espoused by Uncle Fred, updings are a regular part of this Lizard's day. Funny posts are rewarded as well as mea culpas, cool picture or video links, or just generally interesting commentary. If an argument is found for which I heavily agree with one position over the other, I will up-ding the side I like as opposed to down-dinging the side I disagree with. Have only down-dinged twice, and both were for inflammatory flounces that Charles choose to leave exposed before closing them down.
All this doesn't apply to spacejesus, as I up-ding all his posts (unless he is a total ass) in an effort to bring his karma to the positive numbers! (The Lord Mockton impersonator also gets constant up-dings for his total use of acerbic wit.)

It's worth reading the whole thing a few times through and google some of the more obscure terms. Republicans and modern American "conservatism" is not very conservative at all. It's mostly become a mess of Theocrats, authoritarians with beliefs derived from Randian fiction about how great and wonderful big business can be. Also being the personal lobby of tobacco and oil companies hasn't helped.

All their mussel combos are steamed in a mix of beer and herbs. Different beers for different types. And with the monster beer list to go with it. (And I don't think I have ever ordered an entree' there. Just gotten a small pot of mussels and a salad/appetizer.)

The wave of activity for #93 reminds me of a feature request I wanted to send to Charles:
Along with "top 10" and "bottom" comments, why not "most controversial"? It'd be the comments with the most offsetting pairs of dings. So a comment with +4 and -5 would be a total of a 4 on the controversial scale, while one with +13 and -8 would be an 8.

All their mussel combos are steamed in a mix of beer and herbs. Different beers for different types. And with the monster beer list to go with it. (And I don't think I have ever ordered an entree' there. Just gotten a small pot of mussels and a salad/appetizer.)
When we hit other places in Philly, especially Italian or Greek, I'm more likely to veer over into drinking wine with the meal.

Today's unbridled paranoia from Pamela Geller: the US government is totally controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood. Good grief.
Did you know in the FBI’s Counter-Terrorism Manual, the word jihad is not to be found? Not once.
This is no accident. This is happening because for decades the Muslim Brotherhood (i.e., the Muslim American Society, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the Islamic Society of North America, the Islamic Circle of North America, etc.), has infiltrated every agency and institution at the highest levels, and they control what is said and how it can be said.
Islam has achieved absolute intellectual dominance. The Muslim Brotherhood groups in the United States control the narrative. They control information and how it is processed at senior levels of the CIA, the FBI, the Pentagon, and the various branches of the military.

You may not care for his big dumb websites, but Big Hollywood and his Breitbart News are pretty mainstream, just deal.
They aren't, at all. Don't make me haul out the links to posts at Big Dumb Hollywood claiming that Casablanca is a movie about Commies.

I don't care if Yon associates with some crazies, everybody knows atleast one crazy person.
My Mom works on the PTA, I'm a high school dropout. I think that the current American curriculum stiffles original thought and creativity. That makes me her "crazy". Her association with me doesn't make her a less effective member of the PTA.
That's not how internet journalism works. Yon has credibility. Breitbart does not. Yon goes there, he lends them credibility, and reduces his own.
Although now that you mention it, I think your mom's credibility on the PTA might also be reduced....

Question for those participating in the open thread:
Why do you upding? Why do you downding?
My answers:
Upding -
- good, substantive arguments from either/any side
- extremely funny posts
- answers to my questionsDownding -
- trolling
- flaming, insults, or namecalling
- offensive comments
- repeating arguments that have already been refuted earlier in the threadI don't up/downding just for agreement or disagreement.
I also upding to reverse downdings that I consider uncalled for, even though I would not otherwise upding that post.
Downdings I try to reserve for objectionable behaviour or outrageous comments, though if downdinged I may respond in kind.
I have also found it quite pleasant to turn off the ratings so no + or - or red or green number appears.
My guess is that about 90% of the downdings I get or see come from the same 4 or so posters, whereas updings are far more evenly distributed.

That's not a fair account of Iran's recent history. Iran may not have been a model of democracy, but it used to be a lot more westernised. There was a fundie revolution in Iran, in 1979 which reversed that. Now the people have had enough, and the theocratic government is hanging on by the skin of it's teeth.

Instead of a controversial subject, you may get a controversial personality with the dings representing supporters and detractors.
So I say it's a good suggestion that could go awry.

Agree. Contempt is easily earned when tempers flare, whether in politics or with other bloggers. I know what you mean by tyrants, dictators, and genocidal maniacs, but we see how often the Hitler label is affixed to people who really don't deserve it. It's not too awfully clever to turn a person's name to a term of derision, and so easy to do behind a keyboard. It's fun, it earns hearty backslaps, but I believe it takes us back to classroom or playground taunting. Isn't it ridiculous how people leave LGF and call Charles Chucky or Schmuckles, etc? It baffles to see this in adults.
