We Got Mail!

Blogosphere • Views: 2,302

So far this week, we’ve filed 31 emails in the “Abuse” folder, and here are a few of the most vitriolic and/or inadvertently funny ones. Profanities and pathetic grammar left intact for full effect.

First up, we have a reader in New York City who followed a link from a Google search for “little green footballs,” feels in his soul that global warming is a hoax, and has an aversion to typing spaces after punctuation marks. Poignantly titled “AGW:”

So you are falling for the money grab also.I knew you were a shcmuck.TIME magazine knows best? Was it not the lefties when they were basking in Al Gores warm shadow that every hurricane was because of AGW?We poke fun during a blizzard but it is because we know it is stupid to blame any extreme weather act as proof for anything.it is just it always seems to come at bad times for the libs.During conferences and protests it always seems to snow hardest.Charles, just because you fell for the Himalayas disappearing in 35 years, don’t take it out on the rest of us.now go ride your bike into a moving bus and save us all from your stupidity.

Our New York admirer followed this up with a postscript, 40 minutes later, titled “Dummy Charles:”

That Baqua guy made you look like the little scummy faggot I always knew
you were.

As always, homophobia is a very common theme among right wing rage-a-holics. And they often show a disquieting familiarity with the more abstruse details. Case in point: one of our creepy obsessed stalkers is still at work, sending frequent emails with our contact form using proxy IP addresses, with innocuous titles intended to manipulate me into reading the hate messages; here’s one of his latest, titled “Global warming sample size:”

Hey little green fudgepacker. Let me ask you, when you’re gently parting the ass cheeks of a hirsute Latino in order to tongue his hickory nut, what goes through your mind? Will I go with the overhand reach-around next? Walk me through that.

Oh, I hope you get a nice Valentine.
These are not.

These homophobes sure spend a lot of time imagining the sex acts they claim to hate, don’t they?

3 jaunte  Sat, Feb 13, 2010 7:01:43pm

I’m really not getting the connection between AGW and hirsute Latinos.

4 Summer Seale  Sat, Feb 13, 2010 7:02:03pm

It’s amazing to me how many people view AGW as a money “scam”.

Have they ever seen what kind of salaries scientists live on as opposed to people who sell oil?

These people are utterly deluded. They think scientists and research departments earn more money than the car and fossil energy industry?

What the hell are they smoking? It’s not even an argument: it’s just a blatant moronic and idiotic slander.

5 Varek Raith  Sat, Feb 13, 2010 7:02:59pm

Damn, these people need to get a fucking life.
Idiots.

Looks like they’re projecting once again. Their insults are really their very own personal fantasies.

Otherwise it’s common for immature people to resort to homophobic insults. It reminds me of junior high school.

They’ll just claim the engagement is a scam. To them, those who turn on the crazy right must be covering something up, and saying that the thing is gayness has the added advantage in their minds of emasculating the target.

It is disturbing, this combination of exhibiting seething homophobia and at the same time, apparently taking great pleasure in wallowing in homo-erotic imagery. It might be time for some sort of ranking system for this kind of thing. I think we should adopt a wetsuit-based rating system. I’d give that e-mail three wetsuits out of a possible five.

Never as good as early season sweet corn on the cob, drenched in butter and liberally doused with salt and pepper. We make whole meals out of corn on the cob in the summer.

Speaking of corn cobs, a neighbor gave us a bunch last year, cobs that is. Mostly from Indian corn, some from Sweet corn. (Dark and white).

The instructions were to put them in the bathroom in case we ran out of toilet paper. The white ones were to check if one needed to use another dark one.

There’s a reason there are other, better options than rubber and latex. People should toss out and recycle those and upgrade anyway. *nods*

Ferris Bueller Fight Club Theory:

My favorite thought-piece about Ferris Bueller is the “Fight Club” theory, in which Ferris Bueller, the person, is just a figment of Cameron’s imagination, like Tyler Durden, and Sloane is the girl Cameron secretly loves.

One day while he’s lying sick in bed, Cameron lets “Ferris” steal his father’s car and take the day off, and as Cameron wanders around the city, all of his interactions with Ferris and Sloane, and all the impossible hijinks, are all just played out in his head. This is part of the reason why the “three” characters can see so much of Chicago in less than one day — Cameron is alone, just imagining it all.

It isn’t until he destroys the front of the car in a fugue state does he finally get a grip and decide to confront his father, after which he imagines a final, impossible escape for Ferris and a storybook happy ending for Sloane (”He’s gonna marry me!”), the girl that Cameron knows he can never have.

I think it’s an age thing. I know for a fact, that 30 years ago, I would be at least interested in a writer like him. Good, bad or indifferent, he has a sassy anti-whatever style (from what I can see)… and that probably would have said something (good or bad again) to me… as I say… 30 years ago.

I noticed he has a thing about H.S Thompson. Big disconnect for me, at this age. Once again, 30 years ago, I thought Thompson was as clever as they come.

Last year I started into a project with his wife book, a shorter than his whole life biography, my idea, write a one-man play with Thompson as the one character… like a hour and a half monologue.

Really, reading up on all of Thompsons outes and opinion pieces and writings, I couldn’t find a coherent thread that would put together enough material for an evening of theatre.

It’s age… I think.

RedState bans Birthers, Truthers.

We’ve always banned truthers at RedState. Increasingly, we have also banned a number of individuals who think Barack Obama is disqualified from being President because despite the Republican Governor of Hawaii confirming the legitimacy of the Democratic President’s birth origin as a citizen of the United States these birthers (”birfers” because it sounds as crazy as they are) refuse to move on.

Today I want to reaffirm and make it more definitive. If you think 9/11 was an inside job or you really want to debate whether or not Barack Obama is an American citizen eligible to be President, RedState is not a place for you.

Birfers and Truthers are not welcome here. Period. End of Story.

RedState is throwing out the trash. Letting Nirthers and Troofers in just turns a blog into a nuthouse.

Good for them, but when do they plan to start banning other forms of crazy as well? Like saying ACORN helped Obama win the election, or… well really just about 90-95% of the stuff Glenn Beck talks about….

Yes, that last one was too harsh. My father is the eldest of 6 siblings, and one my cousins (whom I am close to) has 5 children of his own. So I do not regard Sarah Palin’s family as overlarge.

I’m from a Presbyterian Nuclear family, of me and my one brother, so I do, but personal experience I guess.

How old is Sarah at the moment anyway? She may yet make it to six or seven….

They’re both groups that have been discriminated against by the majority and so to help one another survive and thrive they’ve needed to form their own culture inside mainstream culture.

Probably a lot of it. The whole classic butch/femme thing is pretty much history, for example. And the AIDs epidemic did its bit—and now that you can meet a nice boy at church, a lot of stuff that happened in the olden days just isn’t relevent.

But people will still meet for politics and socializing, and new social forms will replace the old ones…hard to say, though.

The Cabinet must submit proposals for increasing the number of “major … strategic companies that are attractive for investment” in its privatization plan by March 15, the Kremlin said on its web site.

The current plan, which Prime Minister Vladimir Putin signed in November, already seeks the sale of stakes in several strategic companies, such as shipper Sovkomflot. Medvedev has the responsibility of striking these companies off the list of strategic assets for the stakes to change hands. He hasn’t approved their exclusion as yet.

Medvedev’s order for a greater sale of key assets comes after he conferred with officials last week about ways to encourage investment — and as the government is facing a budget deficit for a second straight year.

The instruction to sell more stakes in major companies didn’t identify them by name. A call to the spokesman for First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov, who is in charge of privatization and investment, went unanswered Thursday afternoon.

The list of strategic companies contains such potentially alluring assets as the airline Aeroflot, television company Channel One, telecoms operator Svyazinvest, oil producers Zarubezhneft and Rosneft as well as oil pipeline monopoly Transneft. Cabinet officials last year ruled out selling more stock in Rosneft, however.

Medvedev also instructed the Cabinet to come up with a proposal to punish more severely those bureaucrats that hamper investment, probably targeting those engaged in corruption. The Kremlin didn’t elaborate on the measure.

Moscow is pushing capitalism. How about that?

Just watched Inglorious Basterds…really good, really weird flick.

I liked it too. It didn’t pretend to be anything other than what it was: a revenge fantasy. Lt Raine’s Italian accent was hilarious. I also liked the guy who played the SS officer, Col. Landa. He gave an excellent performance.

You know, I’ve wondered how well the classic gay culture will survive our cultures general acceptance of homosexuality… Especially outside of places like Castro.

Will people, as they feel less discrimination feel less need to visibly associate with a group?

What would you consider the “classic” phase of gay culture? Stonewall era activism? Folsom Street Barracks out-ness? Literary salons with Auden and Coward? No flame intended or sought, just curious.

These morons are so damn irritating. I consider myself a conservative in many ways. I have enormous admiration for Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan, William F. Buckley. To me, a conservative is supposed to be a mature, rational adult. A person who is able to accept unpleasant realities. A person who does not believe in change for change’s sake, but a person who does accept, and even promote, change when it is right and necessary. A person with a strong sense of humility. And above all, a person with class, dignity, and integrity who doesn’t lower himself/herself to petty, childish slander and name-calling.

For me the ultimate (fictional) model for a conservative is Atticus Finch from “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Atticus is quiet, humble, unfailingly polite, decent, self-confident, straightforward, independent, a realist yet an idealist, deeply moral…he is a true gentleman. My favorite scene in the book is the moment when his young son realizes what a great man his father truly is…when Atticus takes down the rabid dog from a distance with a single rifle shot (his son has never even seen his father with a gun in his hand). Suddenly he realizes that being a man isn’t about being loud and macho and getting into fights to “prove” yourself.

So many so-called “conservatives” today are so far off the mark of what a conservative is supposed to be it’s pathetic. Loud, shrill, childish, shortsighted, tantrum-throwing, irrational, uninformed, smugly, willfully ignorant. So willing to lie and distort to promote their agenda. The anti-science, theocrat bunch is the worst…wrapping themselves in the flag and the memory of the Founding Fathers while they work to overturn the principles of the Enlightenment and the foundations of pluralistic, secular democracy. If Washington or Jefferson or Franklin were around today, they’d slap the faces of these idiots.

I don’t know if I agree with Auden or not. Gay men are charming company, but I do know what he means. I stayed too late at a party in college, looked up at some point, and realized that all of the women and the straight men had left, the flirting was getting more serious-minded, and I had actually become invisible. It was rather interesting, but it does crush your ego a bit…

I hang out with my brothers (gay) and their buddies sometimes, and that’s a confidence boost. Yes, I understand that it’s just the challenge. But, it makes you feel like you’re cool shit for a couple of hours.

Conversely: Some male friends and I were hiking along a river trail here in Atlanta one time, and blundered into an rafting expedition by a local gay club. Some hostile straight onlookers mistook us for participants, and shouted abuse at us all the way out of earshot.

I love Roxy Music music… best when covered by any other group than Roxy. The best version of “Virginia Plain” I ever heard was by a local glam group in Northern New Jersey in the 70’s named “Another Pretty Face.” Thier arrangement of the song was much more solid than Roxy ever played it.

Uh, why?

It changes the social parameters. You experience the otherness of male thought and social behavior, without having to constantly patrol the sexual issues that exist between straight men and women.

Personally, I have a long-standing theory that we should stop using ‘gay’ and ‘straight’ as terms. They’re too complicated, taking into account both your gender, and the proposed partner’s gender, and they create not only social divisions, but force alliances (gay men and lesbians?) that aren’t obvious or culturally very natural.

I think we should simply focus on who it is that you want to sleep with, and identify everyone as ‘guysexual’ or ‘galsexual’. This immediately undermines the possibility of homophobia—how can you slam a man for being guysexual when your own wife is as well? How could Jesse Helms have called Roberta Achtenberg a ‘damn galsexual’ when he himself is galsexual? It also creates more natural alliances—although I have to say that the Galsexual Pride Parade is going to be one boring and unflamboyant event, and will probably be scrapped in favor of a truck show.

Some important global warming news to discuss this weekend has surfaced…

Climategate U-turn as scientist at centre of row admits: There has been no global warming since 1995

The academic at the centre of the ‘Climategate’ affair, whose raw data is crucial to the theory of climate change, has admitted that he has trouble ‘keeping track’ of the information.

Colleagues say that the reason Professor Phil Jones has refused Freedom of Information requests is that he may have actually lost the relevant papers.

Professor Jones told the BBC yesterday there was truth in the observations of colleagues that he lacked organisational skills, that his office was swamped with piles of paper and that his record keeping is ‘not as good as it should be’.

The data is crucial to the famous ‘hockey stick graph’ used by climate change advocates to support the theory.

Professor Jones also conceded the possibility that the world was warmer in medieval times than now – suggesting global warming may not be a man-made phenomenon.

And he said that for the past 15 years there has been no ‘statistically significant’ warming.

And since she is long-accustomed to not having sex, she barely even misses that component in her quasi-romance. As for Curtis, he receives from Debbie social respectability, unconditional acceptance, and a major ego boost via her obvious but unspoken crush on him. Best of all, he doesn’t have to feel the tiniest bit guilty or uncomfortable about her attraction to him because the relationship can never be consummated, thanks to his homosexuality. Curtis and Debbie enjoy a symbiotic relationship of the highest, most dysfunctional order.”

I don’t care what someone’s fantasies are, no matter how lurid. Not my business; not anyone’s.
It’s when they cross the line into action that they become offenders. And there is no doubt they know what they’re doing is wrong.
Some (indirect) actions also cause harm as well: collecting child pr0n, encouraging other assholes to act out what you dream of, all that.
I come back to this: they don’t have to act on those desires. No more than a heterosexual man ‘has’ to rape some woman. Although we should remember that in the latter case, it’s only recently that we started to realise that.
If they target children, how is it any different? I don’t have any sympathy for any of them.

Guy was a convicted sex-offender in Canada, and was on a chemical castration program. He had a girlfriend (she didn’t know his past yet), and was about to be weaned off of his meds, with the presumption that his therapy should take.

Scary and sad for him, because although he was telling himself othewise, he had to know that she was gonna dump him once he knew, and that would make it much harder for the therapy to hold.

I have a play entitled “Appearances,” adapted from the book by Joanne Greenberg (author of “I Never Promised You A Rose Garden”) about pedophilia which won best new play from the Colorado Theatre Guild New Ventures Series of 2008. It’s a very different look at the problem, from a point of view and science not usually approached.

I’ll take a look at it, when I’m feeling less brain damaged.

At the moment all I can say is that as horrible as such crimes are, we should do what we can to try and help those who commit them to become productive members of society, especially when they themselves make it clear that they’re struggling against urges they’d rather do without….

With people like WUB as an example, (my age, gay, doesn’t have the dialect at all), it leads one to wonder how its changing.

I suspect some things will remain the same, whatever the era.

re: #383 iceweasel

I think pedophiles are like sex offenders (rapists) who target adults. They aren’t about genuine sex so much they are about rage, hate, and power. Sex is the weapon or means. But it’s not like sexual orientation because it’s completely lacking the other parts that go with sex: intimacy, love, etc.

So I’m happy cutting them out completely when we discuss sexual orientations. Rape is not an ‘orientation’.

Ice-

I understand what you are saying, but that is exactly how our fathers viewed gay men. Perverts. (Lesbians didn’t exist.)

I am in no way defending pedophiles. It is unacceptable for adults to have sex with children. But that is how they are *hardwired*, just as I am hardwired to be attracted to adult women, gays are hardwired to be attracted to members of their own sex, bisexuals are attracted to any consenting adult, and pansexuals are attracted to humans, animals, fruits and vegetables, and lubricated knotholes.

The only group that violates *all* social mores are the pedophiles, hence the loathe/pity position. The question is, how do we, as a society, deal with them? They can’t help it, any more than a schizophrenic.

How to deal and not be as inappropriate in our reaction as they are in their desire?

One thing I’ve heard from several people and articles and such is that it’s really hard to find therapy or treatment for being a ‘wired’ pedophile if you haven’t done anything criminal. You can’t just walk in off the street and say “I need this program,” mostly the only way in is to be caught doing something horrible. And of course, the social stigma is (justly) so high, that doing so is vanishingly rare anyway.

I don’t care what someone’s fantasies are, no matter how lurid. Not my business; not anyone’s. It’s when they cross the line into action that they become offenders. And there is no doubt they know what they’re doing is wrong.

Exactly. Though I can’t help but be reminded of something Jon Stewart said (in what I think was a Tonight Show interview, though I can’t remember for sure) - to paraphrase:

“Your penis is very stubborn. If you drive through a squash farm and feel a certain tingling, well I’m sorry, but you’ll wind up doing pumpkins”.

It was meant to be a throwaway joke, but when you think of it in terms of pedophiles, it becomes very chilling indeed. I don’t believe they can be cured. If I had the power, I’d dump them on a completely isolated island where there’s no hope of escape and no contact at all with the rest of the world (but with occasional food/supply drops if I still had to comply with “humanitarian” principles).

re: #434 cliffster

Ok I will, I’m not closed-minded, but I am fairly stubborn on some subjects.

One of the hardest things about adapting this Joanne Greenberg book was having to put my own opinions aside. Joanne is a far-left liberal, a far left wonderful Jewish liberal, and I love her to death, but we don’t see eye to eye on a lot of subjects.

When she first sent me the book to read, I knew it was going to have a interesting slant to the usual pedophile track.

It did, I went and did a lot of research on the doctors that she used for her research, and I came away with some information that there are some ways to fight this. I fought her on some of the content, I wanted to make it more palatable to both sides of the issue, and I did.

Like everything of hers that I have adapted, she claims that my finished product is always better than her original book.

The book/play in no way condones the pedophile, but it does delve into the fact that the problem is so offensive to society that the few successful therapies do not get the funding or exposer that they deserve.

Interesting stuff.

re: #446 Dark_Falcon

That doesn’t say AGW is not occuring, just that his data “is not well organized”.

Here is an interesting Q&A with Jones.

B - Do you agree that from 1995 to the present there has been no statistically-significant global warming

Yes, but only just. I also calculated the trend for the period 1995 to 2009. This trend (0.12C per decade) is positive, but not significant at the 95% significance level. The positive trend is quite close to the significance level. Achieving statistical significance in scientific terms is much more likely for longer periods, and much less likely for shorter periods.

C - Do you agree that from January 2002 to the present there has been statistically significant global cooling?

No. This period is even shorter than 1995-2009. The trend this time is negative (-0.12C per decade), but this trend is not statistically significant.

D - Do you agree that natural influences could have contributed significantly to the global warming observed from 1975-1998, and, if so, please could you specify each natural influence and express its radiative forcing over the period in Watts per square metre.

This area is slightly outside my area of expertise. When considering changes over this period we need to consider all possible factors (so human and natural influences as well as natural internal variability of the climate system). Natural influences (from volcanoes and the Sun) over this period could have contributed to the change over this period. Volcanic influences from the two large eruptions (El Chichon in 1982 and Pinatubo in 1991) would exert a negative influence. Solar influence was about flat over this period. Combining only these two natural influences, therefore, we might have expected some cooling over this period.

E - How confident are you that warming has taken place and that humans are mainly responsible?

I’m 100% confident that the climate has warmed. As to the second question, I would go along with IPCC Chapter 9 - there’s evidence that most of the warming since the 1950s is due to human activity.

Ah, then you don’t to have to act on yours? Let’s all be celibate?

Look I’m playing Devil’s Advocate here and I know the answer, but why are *your* sexual preferences any more valid than anyone else’s? Because you are in the vast majority of humanity’s variance?

That’s not a very (*cough*) liberal view of the world is it?

It’s a brutal question of genetics, but in the end, we must make a differentiation between consenting adults (Enjoy that chicken/sorority girl/cougar/beefcake) and children. I just don’t know how to do it.

The only group that violates *all* social mores are the pedophiles, hence the loathe/pity position. The question is, how do we, as a society, deal with them? They can’t help it, any more than a schizophrenic.

How to deal and not be as inappropriate in our reaction as they are in their desire?

Excellent points, a_b. It’s true that because this does violate all social mores it’s difficult to be objective, or compassionate. At least for me.

SFZ mentioned too the difficulty of these people finding treatment if they’ve not already committed a criminal act. And sometimes I think some of the punishments might be disproportionate— for example, if some guy has a few images on his computer, but he isnt producing or distributing child porn, or even engaging with other pedophiles, should he really have his whole life ruined when the FBI or Interpol picks him up as part of a big sweep? Some people have killed themselves when that happened.

I think there may be different levels of offender, too. There’s the kind that is a sociopath and wants to hurt (and kill)— these sometimes have switched to adult victims when they were on parole just to avoid being caught again.
Then there is some set where they’re incapable of adult relationships and have a confused idea that they’re ‘helping’ or ‘loving’ the child.
And there seems to be a set where they’re ‘hardwired’ in terms of sexual attraction. They know it’s wrong, but can’t help what they’re attracted too.
These probably all need different kinds of treatment and punishment or rehab.Chemical castration would help the person in the last group, maybe, the kind who wants help. It isn’t going to help the person in the first group. And I’m sure the list of types isn’t exhaustive.

And there has to be some way for people who know they have a problem to get help without having acted on those urges. I don’t think there is a way now.

One really has to wonder about the stability of such folks.

*shakes head* A similar story…a couple of years ago, right before my divorce in fact, I went hiking with a group of friends in Tilden Park here in the East Bay. It was a fairly intense hike with moderate grades and the like. Anyway, as it just happened, the excursion on my body triggered an emotional response and I got depressed rather quickly. A dear friend, much older than myself (also a guy) took my hand in his and held it for a little while as a sign of compassion.

As we passed another group of hikers (and got a few bizarre and dirty looks), I heard one of them mutter, “those faggots are everywhere.”

Ah, then you don’t to have to act on yours? Let’s all be celibate?

Look I’m playing Devil’s Advocate here and I know the answer, but why are *your* sexual preferences any more valid than anyone else’s? Because you are in the vast majority of humanity’s variance?.

The point is that we control our sexual outlets and our partner selection, if not our desires or fantasies. If you’re heterosexual, you’re not compelled to have sex with every member of the opposite sex, are you? You’re not compelled to have sex outside of marriage, or your relationship, are you?

But I’m sure you know that. I’ve already stated I don’t give a fuck what someone’s fantasies or desires are, or how lurid they are. We can, and do, legislate and punish behaviour. That’s why rapists go to prison.

One would think that helping pedophiles control their sexual attractions before they act on them would be something that a society would think was a worthy way to spend money.

I know. And consider this. This play is based on a book by a very well known author who has had 17 books published since the early 60’s, three of the books made into movies, three books adapted for the stage (my adaptations) and her seminal work “I Never Promised You A Rose Garden” is in like it’s 16 or so printing and has been published in over 20 languages.

Even with this record, she had to go to a small publisher in New Jersey to publish “Appearances.” Her agent at William Morris Agency in NYC couldn’t even get her regular publishers to touch the material.

And even though I have already won awards for the work and it has been seen at a public reading for producers and directors, no one wants to touch it. I have had no production offers.

Debra Medina, the Republican running for governor of Texas has taken a lot of heat, and for good reason, about being a 9/11 truther.

Will this Democrat get the same press?

Shami: ‘Whites don’t want to work in factories’

Race became an issue in the Democratic primary for governor today.

Farouk Shami, the millionaire hair care products maker who’s running, said he doesn’t find many white people willing to work, so he says he hires Hispanics and blacks instead.

He made the comments responding to a question about whether the state should crack down on employers hiring illegal immigrants.

He also said he, too, would not disavow the conspiracy theory that the U.S. government was involved in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

…Shami replied, “I find 80 percent of my employees at the factory are Hispanics. I don’t find, you know, many white people really willing to work, you know, unfortunately.”

While still declining to answer the question, Shami said that at his Houston hair care products factory, Hispanics are vital to his business and the economy.

Asked to explain what he meant about not hiring many whites, he said they want special treatment. “A majority of the people are going to be Hispanic and African-American. You don’t find white people who are willing to work in factories. And our history proves, you know, lots of time when they, you know, the white people come to work in a factory they either want to be supervisors or they want to be, you know, paid more than the average person. And unfortunately they exit.”

And then just a day after Medina, didn’t reject the notion that the government was involved in the 9/11 attacks, Shami didn’t either.

That’s not a very (*cough*) liberal view of the world is it?

It’s a brutal question of genetics, but in the end, we must make a differentiation between consenting adults (Enjoy that chicken/sorority girl/cougar/beefcake) and children. I just don’t know how to do it.

Valid sexual preferences are adult-to-adult preferences. The difference is having sex with children which takes on a whole different level of control and humiliation.

Pedophiles are worse in my mind than rapists because pedophiles already rape. They aren’t having consensual sex. They bully or otherwise manipulate children, non-adults who can’t fight back.

If it’s genetic, then I think castration would be the only way to fix it. Is there a pedophilia gene? However, many pedophiles are already victims of abuse so it’s natural to them and why therapy doesn’t always work.

The problem with your thought experiment is that it isn’t providing a proper parallel to pedophilia.
In your scenario, you’re imagining that the victimless crime of consensual sex between a man and a woman is illegal.

If someone is genetically hardwired to be sexually attracted to children but hasn’t yet acted on the impulse, the only solution is to find a way to kill off their sex drive, permanently. They’ll just have to live with the fact that they can never have a normal sexual relationship (and yes, I know some bigots feel this way towards gays, but I don’t see the situations as analogous at all - healthy gay relationships (like healthy straight relationships) take place between consenting adults, not someone incapable of giving consent at all).

re: #463 iceweasel

That is a well considered answer. Except for the chemical castration bit. If your orientation was the evil exception, would you volunteer for it? Would you fight it? Of course you would. Your normal is your normal.

I think that a big part of the problem is that any gesture toward help gets confused in people’s minds with condoning the sexual assault of children—and the ration brain shuts right down at that point.

And there could be other outlets than chemical castration. For example, there’s been a lot of discussion about digitally manipulated child pr0n. Images that don’t involve any real child at all. So there’s no child to be harmed there at the end of the chain, where it was produced.
Shouldn’t possession of that be treated differently? Is there anything inherently wrong with the guy hardwired that way collecting those images? Couldn’t that possibly be an outlet for him, a safe one?

Similarly with prostitutes. This won’t work for a guy with pedophila as opposed to ephebophilia or hebephilia, but there’s got to be a ton of prostitutes out there who are of legal age but trade on looking much younger.

This is one the few times when I simply do not care how the person being discussed feels. If they fight it, then you crush them. My words to them would be as follows:

Whether or not this is fair to you is irrelevant. Your desires pose an unacceptable risk. Given the level of damage a person with your inclinations can do if they lose control, in this case the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one.

All true. However, a heterosexual can probably have sex with some member of the opposite sex. If not, s/he can access porn, read and watch movies about heterosexual contact, talk to people at work about what people they find attractive, etc., etc.

A genuine pedophile, that hardwired person who for whatever reason is really not a sociopath, but someone whose sexual response is skewed, has no legitimate outlets outside his own head.

This is not to say that we shouldn’t punish behavior, just to say that someone who can only be attracted to children and manages to keep it all in his head, and harm no one, is justly an object of pity, and some admiration. If there is something to be done to offer such people a chance to live an easier life…drugs, therapy, whatever…they should have it.

I have no idea how many people we’re really talking about here. I suspect that most people who molest children aren’t ‘wired’ pedophiles, and I have been told that this is a very underdeveloped area of research.

re: #511 SanFranciscoZionist

Every point you made is spot on. Including the very last one. It is very underdeveloped for a number of reasons, the biggest reason is the stigma that goes along with it.

I can even be considered a example of this. I usually am pretty good at self-promotion, but I don’t think I have ever mentioned my connection to this matter until tonight. Even as a writer, it’s something I don’t go “bragging” about.

Funny that.

In Miami, we have this problem where sex offenders are being released from jail and told to go live under the causeway. They cannot live within 2500 feet of children, so basically, there’s no where to go. Under the causeway, under the bridges, there are “tent cities” where they live. Some aren’t tents, but cardboard boxes. Like the homeless.

Other than their own safety, especially during hurricane season, theft and violence, they are unsightly and damaging the environment. The whole thing is rather inhumane.

The question remains what to do with them. Granted, some of them are young men, maybe 18 who slept with a 16 year old. Technically a sex offender which I think is unfortunate, but the majority of them are indeed criminals.

They filed suit against the city last year, but the city won its right to keep them there.

One of the first thing we can do is make sure that states have graduated levels of sex offender laws to make sure that someone who was nabbed peeing in public and charged with exposing themselves or a 18 year old who had sex with his 16 year old girlfriend are not treated the same as a sexual predator.

I think that if society says you can’t live here with us then we need to provide a safe and realistic alternative.

White House: 9/11 Military Trial Possible
Attorney General Doesn’t Rule Out Military Trial for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed as Obama Faces Increased Congressional Pressure

(CBS/ AP) Updated at 4:38 p.m. ET

The Obama administration appears increasingly unsure what to do with professed Sept. 11, 2001 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed after officials indicated they are reconsidering not just where he should go on trial, but whether he should face civilian or military justice.

Both Attorney General Eric Holder and White House spokesman Robert Gibbs did not rule out a military trial when asked Friday about the Obama administration’s options.

Trying Mohammed in military court would mark a further political retreat from Holder’s announcement last year that Mohammed and the four other Sept. 11 suspects now held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, would be tried in federal court in New York…

re: #568 Walter L. Newton

I love European TV. One night in Warsaw, I think 2005, I was watching some German channel, a chat/variety show, and they had Will Smith on promoting a new movie (I am Legend?). For what ever reason, they put him in a bucket loader tractor and he was trying to pop balloons that tied to the studio ceiling with the tractor bucket arm.

I don’t know what that had to do with a movie promotion or much of anything, and I don’t think WIll Smith had any idea either.

Funny stuff.

And then there’s the bizarre use of a relaxing smooth jazz baseline for gangsta rap freestyle.

I stole most of that from Neal Stephenson. In his “Baroque Cycle” he does a lot of that on purpose, capitalizing certain phrases that he uses over and over, in the style of the time.

What is the use of have a sex offender list is they are basically homeless out on the streets.

I’ve had friends freak out when they find out a registered sex offender lives close to them and I always respond “better the devil you know then the one you don’t”. Intelligence ties between UK and US in jeopardy

LONDON – Intelligence ties between London and Washington have been jeopardized by a British court’s disclosure that a terrorism suspect was beaten and shackled in U.S. custody, diplomats and security officials said Wednesday.

Fears in the United States that Britain can no longer be trusted with secrets is prompting an urgent assessment of relations between the allies and — according to some sources — has already slowed the flow of sensitive information from the U.S.

Britain’s Court of Appeal on Wednesday authorized the release of a previously secret summary of CIA documents detailing the treatment of former Guantanamo Bay detainee Binyam Mohamed. Mohamed was arrested in Pakistan in 2002 and, according to the British court, subjected to “cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment by the United States authorities.”

Foreign Secretary David Miliband fought for two years to block publication of the seven-paragraph summary, insisting that would violate a long-standing rule that nations don’t disclose intelligence shared by their allies.

The White House said Wednesday the British court’s judgment “will complicate the confidentiality of our intelligence-sharing relationship.”

U.S. Intel Officials Seeing Spike in al Qaeda-Linked Internet Chatter Focused on Ways to Thwart Airport Security

CBS News has learned that U.S. Intelligence officials are seeing a marked increase in terror-related Internet chatter with a frightening focus: Jihadists bent on finding gaps in airport security - all linked to al Qaeda in Yemen, reports CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian.

On one radical website, a writer invites fellow members to post information on how to bypass airport screening.

Another member asks about explosive detection devices, writing: “We have that system in place in Algiers…does anyone know if it’s capable of detecting [the flammable gas] butane?”

On another Jihadist site, a visitor questions security involving 3D scanners at British airports asking: “Can I refuse [to pass through] for religious reasons?”

Before long comes this answer: “…advise those who wish to avoid the Heathrow scanners to take the train to Paris… and then board a plane from there.”

Perhaps most disturbing — the recent discovery of a confidential TSA document on a Yemeni Web site discussing the rules for searching passengers.

Now that is some scary shit.

That would be the Obama White House. These show trials in the UK will be damaging in the long run. They’re politically motivated.

“I met a traveller from an antique land…”

No, wait.

Start again.

I met a kid in Taos who was trying to find a warm place to sleep on a six-degree night right before the witching hour. He had a puppy with him, and a huge backpack, and nothing else but what he had bummed that day.

So I took him down to the local Super 8 Motel and bought him a room, even though I had to sneak him in after getting the key because Super 8 (unlike Motel 6 and Red Roof) forbids pets.

And I told him to wise the fuck up and if you’re gonna be on the bum in winter, head to Florida.

And to pay it forward.

May all creatures be at ease.

I used to be agnostic about anthropomorphic global warming until “Climategate” happened. Then I noticed that all the academies of science believe in AGW. I noticed that the skeptics mischaracterized the scientists. I starting reading both sides carefully and realized that the skeptics are persecuting these scientists. It reminds me of how the KGB and now the ruling United Russia party vilify people in the media and stir up ignorant people about so-called “greedy socialists,” but the defamation and slurry of propaganda is the same. It used to be “greedy capitalists,” but it’s really the same. I have voted Republican for 40 years, but now I will not support them. Politicians like Inhofe are basically in step with the Russian ruling party and Gazprom on this. They don’t want any government or regulations at all for these very powerful gas/oil lobbies. I consider Inhofe and these denialists a threat to our national security. The denialists overreached

Correction-I should have written anthropogenic global warming. Here are some videos that explain the theory of AGW and show the denialists’ propaganda. This is a series by Peter Sinclair called “Climate Denial Crock of the Week.” I read Russian and notice that a lot of these denialist arguments on the blogs are being made in the Russian media. Pravda claims it is getting colder.
Those Russian papers are often owned by the gas/oil monopolies.

Still, many Russian Scientists are very smart and are also worried about AGW. One I know a lot about is named Sergei Kirpotin. He is featured on my blog a lot.
