SC Republican Wants to Ban Money

Weird • Views: 5,371

South Carolina State Rep. Mike Pitts wants to ban money.

South Carolina will no longer recognize U.S. currency as legal tender, if State Rep. Mike Pitts has his way.

Pitts, a fourth-term Republican from Laurens, introduced legislation earlier this month that would ban what he calls “the unconstitutional substitution of Federal Reserve Notes for silver and gold coin” in South Carolina. If the bill were to become law, South Carolina would no longer accept or use anything other than silver and gold coins as a form of payment for any debt, meaning paper money would be out in the Palmetto State.

Pitts said the intent of the bill is to give South Carolina the ability to “function through gold and silver coinage” and give the state a “base of currency” in the event of a complete implosion of the U.S. economic system.

“I’m not one to cry ‘chicken little,’ but if our federal government keeps spending at the rate we’re spending I don’t see any other outcome than the collapse of the economic system,” Pitts said. …

“To me, something I can hold tangible in my hand I can put more value in, especially under the current rate of inflation,” Pitts said. “In the case of total economic collapse, a barter tool is going to be worth a whole lot more value than paper with ink on it.”

But one legal expert told The Palmetto Scoop that, even if it were passed, Pitts’ bill would quickly be ruled unconstitutional.

This bill is a great idea because silver does not fluctuate much in value. Silver coins would always be worth the same thing.

Also, gold has intrinsic value somehow. Gold is magic.

Imagine there's no money
It's easy if you try
No gold below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no bankers
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to buy or spend for
And no dollars too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Still, Pitts said, a system based around bartering is better than a currency-based economy.

“To me, something I can hold tangible in my hand I can put more value in, especially under the current rate of inflation,” Pitts said. “In the case of total economic collapse, a barter tool is going to be worth a whole lot more value than paper with ink on it.”

This level of thinking is on par with that of the teller in the Turkish bank where I changed some dollars for Turkish Lira. One of my bills had a corner torn off, maybe 5% of the bill was missing, so the teller deducted that amount from the value of the bill. Some just don't grasp the concept.

There's a teeny possibility he may be using hyperbole to make a point about what he sees as a run-a-way federal financial policy.

107 BARACK THE VOTE  Thu, Feb 18, 2010 3:55:19pm

Ok, I just finished the rest of the article, and it's actually scarier than the excerpt. In response to the blatant unconstitutionality of his proposal, he says:

Pitts, however, dismissed that claim, saying that “adherence to the Constitution is a two-edged sword. The federal government has consistently violated the Constitution, especially the 10th Amendment and Commerce Clause.”

[...]

But Pitts admits it is unlikely the bill will be passed.

“I’ve been trying to push bills forward that would crack down on intrusions on state’s rights for eight years,” said Pitts. “I don’t see the intestinal fortitude of this legislative body to test the federal government on Constitutional issues. One that has this much teeth in it I don’t think has the ability to pass.”

The guy's a Tenther.

The American Free Press is the place to go to read up on all the far right conspiracies and strategies to "retake" the USA. Its not just a coincidence that there is a story posted there right now about how we must abolish the IRS. Third Party’s Platform Must Include Repeal of 16th Amendment OK. So maybe there aren't any explicit instructions to destroy IRS offices, but I'm guessing the nuts who buy into the AFP crapola are smiling just a bit tonight with the news from Texas.

Okay here's a scenario I'm an investor, looking around the country for a good place to park my big $$$ business in some state, that offers the best conditions for my business. Heck maybe I'm even and international investor for that matter. SC gets on the short list. Then I see that this the type of legislation that state government and it's reps would even consider. Am I going to say, 'oh, it's just hyberbole, no big deal.' Maybe but it would give pause. Ridiculous things like this, no matter the intent can really hurt credibility in money matters like that.

Anti-Union CPAC Being Serviced By ‘Terrific’ Union Employees

Labor unions are one of the right wing’s biggest targets. Fox News host Glenn Beck frequently attacks them, and Republicans have done everything they can to block the Employee Free Choice Act. “Why don’t we make things in American anymore?” Beck asked in January. “Because of the labor unions.”

...

ThinkProgress asked some conference attendees if they were pleased with the service provided by these union employees. All those interviewed praised their experience at the hotel thus far:

– “It’s been wonderful considering all of the people who are here. I think they’ve done a tremendous job.”

– “I’ve been very satisfied. It’s been very accommodating. [The service at CPAC has been] absolutely terrific.”

If only Romney could call some of those tea partiers to repentance. Starting with the Birchers.

re: #146 SanFranciscoZionist

I think we always had a disconnect between the level of security people wanted, and the complete lack of hassle they expected to go with it. Hence, the recurrent fantasy that somehow 'profiling' will allow us to catch all terrorists infalliably, while wholesome all-American types waltz onto their flights without so much as a bag check.

There were always two barrels to "National Security". Post-9/11 fear wasn't about national security at all. It was about the sense of personal vulnerability in the nation. Real national security, the survival of a free nation, hasn't been threatened since 1942. (If you discount the suicide pact with the Russkis)

The whole gold standard thing is a neat idea, and I'm no fan of the Federal Reserve, but do these fringe ideological purists even think their plans through before spouting off their talking points and pushing legislation?

Like, you know, maybe asking where the gold and silver is going to come from? We haven't had enough gold to cover the value of outstanding paper currency for half a century or more.

Maybe Glenn Beck could hook them up.

They're going to get it from all the gold jewelry that people send in the mail for cash money.

Time.

They can't keep us this bullshit forever. In 2 years when the nation indeed hasn't collapsed, their story will be kinda over.

I'd like to think you're right, and I agree that if (when) the economy is rebounding strongly then most of the teabaggers will lose their new found interest in politics.
However, they're tapping into more than current anxiety and economic unrest. They're tapping into a deep and old vein of crazy in American culture. Think of all the other apocalyptic/end times movements we've had in America. When the 'last day' arrives and the world doesn't end, they don't lose followers.

The teabaggers aren't all propheysing the end of the world, but the point is that for a certain kind of hysteric, the idea of living in the 'last days' gives them such psychological and emotional gratification that reality is no barrier to maintaining the belief. The prophet will be followed, no matter how often exposed as a fraud; the 'last days' are still here, even though the last 'last day' was supposed to happen a year ago. Etc.
Quite a few of those hysterics on the move at the moment. I don't really know what will calm them down, but it isn't going to happen for a while, I think. Possibly not until the election of a republican potus. (Compare militia and anti-abortion violence under Clinton; lots of it dried up under Bush.)

The problem is, and I dig these charts up a lot, Republicans have historically never spent less than Democrats. They arguably take in slightly less in taxes but the variance is so small it wouldn't even pass statistical muster.

The entire "Republicans = small government, less taxes" and "Democrats = big government, more taxes" narrative is just that: a pre-constructed narrative that is so ingrained in the people's psyche at this point, both parties feel obligated to follow their assigned role and spout off their assigned lines.

Republicans certainly have lessened the tax burden while in office, but yes spending has been a problem.

But people get on Reagan and I rebuke that bullshit- he took our military from a mediocre force to the most powerful in the world and he never exceeded 6% of GDP on defense spending during his time.

Elton John claims Jesus was a 'super-intelligent gay man' in U.S. magazine interview

Sir Elton John has dubbed Jesus a 'super-intelligent gay man' in a controversial new interview.

The singer made the throw-away comment while talking about lesbians trying to survive in the Middle East.

'I think Jesus was a compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems,' he told American magazine Parade in an interview due to be published on Sunday.

'On the cross, he forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving.

'I don’t know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East – you’re as good as dead.'

His comments are set to cause a firestorm in the U.S., where deeply religious groups burned Beatles records in 1966 after John Lennon claimed the group was more popular than Jesus.

I wonder if he would be brave enough to say Mo was gay too.

WASHINGTON - A smelly mess is finally being cleaned up in the District. Trash pickup has started up again, as the city digs out from last week's storms.

It's an issue that's really piling up in the District. "It's quite disgusting," fretted D.C. resident Elizabeth Ganshert. "I just try not to look at it."

But it's getting harder and harder not to see overflowing trash cans.

Supremacy Clause

The Supremacy Clause is a clause in the United States Constitution, Article VI, Clause 2. The clause establishes the Constitution, Federal Statutes, and U.S. treaties as "the supreme law of the land". The text establishes these as the highest form of law in the American legal system, mandating that state judges uphold them, even if state laws or constitutions conflict.

Ballooning entitlement growth wrecked his budgets. The President has no authority over those accounts as they are deemed "Mandatory" and a bill passed by Congress and signed the President is needed to adjust entitlement spending.

Except the Senate was controlled by Republicans for 7 of those top 10 spending years!

This is what I'm talking about: The goalposts move however they need to, from "it's Congress's fault" to "it's the President's fault" to whatever rationalization is necessary to comply with the pre-construed narratives of the two parties. It's pure clannish self-delusion on both sides.

Of course his political leanings aren't relevant...to Beck. What would be even more irrelevant would be his being a member of Beck's fan club or 9/12 project...people like this don't just decide to kill themselves and take out a federal building on their own...they sit and stew for weeks or months and listen to people who validate their feelings, thus enabling them to sit and stew even more.

Rumor has it the guy torched his house before taking off in his plane. I suspect that'll slow the forensic research the FBI does, but it won't stop it. Data on his hard drive will be recovered. Testimony from his widow will also be telling, I'm guessing.

Less formal. Meeting with him is a big deal because it's a huge affront against to China. Just meeting with him, even if it was a passing 'hi how are you' in the hall' is enough to cast waves.

Similar thing happen here when the Primeminister met him. No presser, only a couple of cameras and the meeting in a less formal setting.

It's not an insult. The Dali Lama is not a stupid man and understands the ins and outs of this level of diplomacy. His people were more then likely part of arranging exactly how it was done as well.

So treating the Dalai Lama like a second class citizen is alright because of his calm demeanor and humility?

Who treated him like a second class citizen? Granted, the White House grounds crew will have to be a little more attentive to making sure bags of garbage aren't lying around in view of the cameras, but my guess is he took that exit because it was closest to his transportation, and the guy was walking around in freakin' flip-flops in DC...in February...

I wonder why Obama wouldn't let him in the Oval office?

/he forgot the egg rolls? spit. O is a pig.

[Link: news.yahoo.com...]

During Thursday's visit, Obama -- like his White House predecessors -- denied the Dalai Lama the symbolism of meeting in the Oval Office. Instead they met in the lesser-known Map Room. Such distinctions signaled to Beijing that the Tibetan monk was not being received as a political leader.

Also here's how upset the Dalai Lama was at all the snubs (///) as he walked out of the White House to make statements to the press:

The Dalai Lama did meet with reporters outside the White House, playfully tossing a bit of snow at them and declaring himself "very happy" with the visit.

Before his visit someone here on LFG wondered how low Obama would bow before the Dalai Lama. I replied that I would feel fine about bowing a little myself. If he had bowed, we'd be hearing about it, and because he lets him out a door with trash bags on the ground, it's disrespect?

Sorry, reality has no place in the Wingularity.

The preapproved meme is that Obama is clueless, 'trash', and insults world leaders, when he isn't groveling to them (by way of, say, bowing). He is also unaware of all foreign policy issues-- far less aware than the average wingnut fucktard posting from his mother's basement.

Also, Obama is hated by all world leaders and laughed at by them, when we're not pretending that some of them (typically muslim ones) are seekrit accomplices of his.

On days beginning with T Obama is seekritly controlling Muslim countries; On days beginning with S he is a seekrit socialist, and on all days ending with Y we must remember: Whatever Obama does is always wrong.

If he is not outraged, we should not be outraged. Remember that the Dali Lama is mentally and spiritually on a higher plain that we mere mortals are. He's been reborn many, many more times than we have so as not to be offended or distracted by modern generalities. Buddists don't attribute anger to things like that, it is considered unenlightened.
To those who wonder what I know about it, I would remind you that RWC and I studied at a Tao-Confusionist Temple years ago and one of the great sages we studied was Buddha and his followers, so we are a little more knowledgeable about Buddhist thinking. :-)

You have surely seen the litmus test/political plot chart of left right, authoritarian/libertarian? That thing is useless until it goes 3d. The ways you and I alone would get after Obama shows the need well. A 2 d plot is just not up to the task.

The political compass test? it's useful in that it covers the world political spectrum, not solely US labels, imo.

Americans are 'most attractive' people in the world, poll finds

The United States, home to George Clooney and Jessica Simpson, came top in a poll of more than 5,000 globe-trotting Britons.

In second place was Brazil while Spain, which boasts Hollywood actress Penelope Cruz as one of its natives, was third.

Blonde, tanned surfers of Australia saw it voted into fourth place, while Italy came fifth.

Sexy Swedes, such as model Victoria Silvstedt, helped it into sixth spot, but England only made it into seventh place in the poll.

India was eighth, France ninth, and Canada finished off the top 10.

The thing about the Tea Party people is that I'd bet that if you put a balance sheet in front of them, only 25% of them would know what balancing it means, and how to do it.

And yet they all scream about cutting spending...I've yet to hear a good suggestion containing the WHAT AND HOW. I have read actual detailed plans on this, by smart conservatives, but none of that is present at Tea Partys.

Bingo with why I take smart conservatives seriously, and merely mock the Tea Party.

And he's from SC? How much gold and silver does he suppose they have on hand?

Hands of tobacco and jugs of liquor will remain currency long after the last gold-bug starves after trying to buy a chicken with a Krugerrand.

On the face of the claim alone, anyone who really believes autos are a more cost efficient means of transportation needs to answer one fundamental question:

Why the majority of the developing world depends on trains and not automobiles.

Rephrased:
If autos were truly cheaper than trains, why wouldn't China, India, etc. rely more on autos?

Ya think it might be because most of their people are so piss poor that they can't afford to buy a car?

I had a lovely time on a train in Europe when I was about 8 years old (during the summer after second grade)

They didn't just have rows of seats they had booths like at a restaurant and so my entire family (me, my dad, my mom my brother) were able to sit around and pass the trip playing one round of hearts after another, a game me and my brother had just recently learned....

As has been stated repeatedly in this thread, it is healthy to be critical of Obama in a rational way.

Yes - and this goes for the left holding Obama's feet to the fire, too. Not only for the goals they want to move, but also because it's better for the country. If the right had bestirred itself, in the slightest, to stop Bush enabling the GOP to throw every principle they ever believed in out the window, several things would be better: the state of the economy, our political debate, and the state of the Republican party. That last, given our effective 2 party system here, would also be better for our nation as a whole.

whether you factor in travel time or convenience as a cost.

In no way is this anything but anecdotal, but since my "downsizing" (earlier thread), I am much better situated to take advantage of our city's light rail system. Impressions so far: love it. I haven't put gas in my car for 2 weeks, and the time before that was around New Year's. I absolutely love the walk to and from the stations. The travel time is undoubtedly a factor, but on one side I have lower fuel costs, the pleasure of skipping traffic jams, a few minutes of exercise and less stress. I'm a convert.

Speaking of being deranged. This was the caption at the Youtube account of the video on Nancy Pelosi posted upthread (#546):

If you are still wondering whether the communists are attempting to take over this country this should answer it. Pelosi likes Harry Bridges because he is a communist. Obama is no different. ...

The profile includes this strange rant from sandydavis12252006 :

A Government report on how to recognize a terrorist, states that if a person shows the Dont Tread on Me flag then that person is a probable terrorist. This flag was created by the founders of this country which means that George Washington and all those who fought to create the United States are terrorists by todays standards.

With that in mind, we now are adopting the flag to identify our channel. According to the Government, we are now to be considered terrorists. We are proud to be considered as such, since we stand in the good company of our founders.

To the Government, go to hell.

You argue that he is making a point.

What is that he's trying to make?

That we need to curb federal spending or else he's gonna take his state and go home?

You're taking the hyperbole seriously and that's a mistake. It seems to me he feels so strongly that (perhaps terminal) financial mistakes are being made at the federal level that he feels compelled to to do something just as stupid hoping that his outrageous act will correlate the two stupidities in peoples minds.

I think he would be stunned that anyone is taking the actual proposal seriously.

Holy Mary Mother of %$$#^! Did you read the article??

Pitts said a system based around bartering is better than a currency-based economy.

“To me, something I can hold tangible in my hand I can put more value in, especially under the current rate of inflation,” Pitts said. “In the case of total economic collapse, a barter tool is going to be worth a whole lot more value than paper with ink on it.”

IMHO, YMMV (pun?), etc

Neutronium is the densest form of matter possible outside of a black hole. It is so dense that the electrons and protons found in normal matter are squished together to create a material composed mainly of neutrons.

It is found in neutron stars, which are the remnants of super novae. One teaspoon of it weighs 100 million tons, or the same as 1000 skyscrapers

HA!
True story: there's a fish and chips van in our neighbourhood in Scotland, that blares Dixie on its loudspeakers to announce its presence.
They have no idea what the song is or means, just associate it with some random 'America' idea. When I'm back I plan to give them some better music options and explain the problem to them. :)

Then again, there is an icecream van that visits my manhattan neighbourhood and plays "Greensleeves" over and over at epic volume...

Note, in case you have not already noticed: European, the Brits included, are vague on the American Civil War.

My first insight into this came one night in Dublin when I was nineteen...in front of a clothing store called "The Yankee Rebel", with a billowing Confederate battleflag painted across the storefront.

I happened to be with a young man from Georgia who took a picture, because otherwise his mother wouldn't believe it.

Mo got married to so many women that I suspect his straightness is fairly well-established.

And I can't believe I have started to refer to Mohammed as 'Mo'. Someone smack me if I do that again.

Wow.... that's like... that's like having a Nazi in a movie shout "Heil the Kizer!" as best I can figure out....

Its nice to know we're not the only nation that is full of people who are horrible about other people's histories....

re: #564 Jimmah

The fish van that comes round my way plays 'Dixie'. There is a rival van, which plays 'Yankee Doodle Dandly'. Somethings brewing, for sure, and it ain't pretty...

I don't know the song the local ice cream truck plays, but it is driven by Sikhs, and is pink, so I approve of it.

re: #626 albusteve

so you really do take the guy in SC serious?...that seems a bit odd to me

What does it mean to 'take someone serious'? Do I think he's going to get SC on the gold standard? No. Do I think he has amply demonstrated that he is a dumbass? Yes. So, as a dumbass, I take him seriously.

Does crucifixion count?

I'm inclined to laugh, but we had such a flap about burning Sarah Palin at the stake...

Dear G-d...

The Nullification crisis?

... Again?

Where is Andrew Jackson when you need him?

It seems that my comparisons to deranged Southerners and Hamasniks are very apt.

Both groups seem to hold grudges for many generations.
