"Conservatives believe it is everyone's right to pursue happiness..."

Yes, yes they do.

In 2008 Conservatives believed it is everyone's right to pursue happiness...unless you're gay.

In 1960 Conservatives believed it is everyone's right to pursue happiness...unless you're black.

In 1910 Conservatives believed it is everyone's right to pursue happiness...unless you're a woman.

The best part about 2010 is, you don't need to look to closely at the actions of conservatives to see that the exceptions for the pursuit of happiness are still in place for gays, blacks, and women. They're just more subtle about the last two - but not by much.

Lyrics:
The paranoia is in bloom, the PR
The transmissions will resume
They'll try to push drugs
Keep us all dumbed down and hope that
We will never see the truth around

Another promise, another scene, another
A package not to keep us trapped in greed
With all the green belts wrapped around our minds
And endless red tape to keep the truth confined

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious

Interchanging mind control
Come let the revolution take it's toll if you could
Flick the switch and open your third eye, you'd see that
We should never be afraid to die

Rise up and take the power back, it's time that
The fat cats had a heart attack, you know that
Their time is coming to an end
We have to unify and watch our flag ascend

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious

For example (in case what you watched didn't convince you):

Are mandatory vaccinations acts of violence against children?

Most modern vaccinations are, of course, a form of chemical violence against children. If they were all formulated without chemical preservatives (like thimerosal) and dangerous adjuvants (which can harm the nervous system), that might be a different story. But far too many of today's vaccines are chemical concoctions that are entirely unnatural to the human body. To force them into the bodies of innocent children is an act of medical violence.

Now, I think we can learn a lot from that situation. Not from Tiger, but from his wife. So, she said, 'I've had enough.' She said, 'No more.' I think we should take a page out of her playbook and take a nine iron and smash the window out of big government in this country.

Ron Paul was born in 1934. He's older than John McCain. Somehow I don't see him getting a whole lot of votes in 2012.

I'm pretty sure he wouldn't get much more than 4-5% in a general election if the Republicans nominated him. 10% at best.

I'm very conservative, but this guy is just plain nuts. He DOES sound like a Bircher and he advocates some things that are frightening in the way some of the far left's ideas are.

Koskidz: Ron Paul wins CPAC 2012 Presidential straw poll

You may recall that in early 2008, Fox made the Unfair & Unbalanced decision to ban Ron Paul from a GOP presidential debate. But now, just two years later, their network is leading media mouthpiece for the tea party movement spawned by Paul.

Another example of how times change: Glenn Beck is concluding keynoter for CPAC. Though Beck today is the leading teabagger on the teabagger's leading network, in 2007 he expressed concern that some Ron Paul supporters were fomenting domestic terrorism. And now he's keynoting a conference that just tapped Paul as their top pick for 2012.

It's enough to raise the question: are Fox and the GOP taking over the tea party movement? Or is the teabagging on them? Odds are, Mitt Romney, who won the CPAC straw poll for the past three years running, will find out the answer to that question soon enough.

my only comment is to re-post the lyrics of a classic...

We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgment of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
And I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again

Change it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fall that's all
But the world looks just the same
And history ain't changed
'Cause the banners, they all flown in the last war

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
And I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!

I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
For I know that the hypnotized never lie

Do ya?

There's nothing in the street
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Is now the parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Missed in all the noise over CPAC is the continuing fallout from the Joe Stack incident.

Chuck Baldwin, Constitution Party presidential candidate, whose candidacy and party were endorsed by the political party (Alaska Independence) to which the Sarah Palin's husband belonged for so many years (and who herself opened the their 2008 party convention)... that Chuck Baldwin penned a piece commiserating with Joe Stack, published at the usual places on the 'net.

Baldwin says of Stack:

"My heart goes out to Joe Stack!
[...]
Let's send a message, in no uncertain terms, that if they want our pound of flesh, they are going to have to come and get it—and if they do, it's going to cost them a whole lot more than a pound of theirs!

Oh, Joe! I wish you had not killed yourself."

And then you have the usual right-wing whiners who are claim the media is unfairly calling Stack a "right wing nut".

Well, if the beliefs of Joe Stack are in harmony with Chuck Baldwin then yes, Stack was a right wing nut!

The short answer is that in many ways the GOP is stuck in a weird timewarp.
The longer one would involve talking about their attempts to rehabilitate McCarthy, and by extension McCarthyism (cf Coulter's book).
Plus, they adore the 'fifth column' and 'enemies within' meme. They'd re-establish HUAC if they could.

The answer to that is simple: the largest segment of the Republican right, and most of the CPAC'ers are 60+, it's the last hurrah of the holy horde that was united against the atheist commies but which instead now marks it's enemy as the scientist, the educated, and the gay.

Remember, more CPACers approve of Lew Rockwell's choice for President, than they do for any other candidate.

For a good look at the GOP, I really think you've got to take a look at the RNC Chairman, Michael Steele. he's the current leader of the party, and, as such, is the best representative of the current state of the party.

you might have heard his name mentioned at CPAC - they're not uniformly pleased with him.

Meanwhile, Lew Rockwell, who uses his site as a key publicist for CPAC straw poll winner, is promoting the idea that a "Pentagon Junta" is itching to start WWIII by plotting to overthrow Iran, in order to control oil flows to Russia and China.

Remember, more CPACers approve of Lew Rockwell's choice for President, than they do for any other candidate.

Yes, I'm sure there's a small but powerful group of highly placed admirals and generals who just don't feel like they're getting enough action over the last eight years and think that a good old-fashioned conventional war would be just the thing to stretch their legs a bit.

Whack-job.

re: #601 Naso Tang

Will it matter? Aside from finding the thought personally embarrassing, I do think that friends and enemies alike will pay attention when presidential candidates, past and maybe future, are speaking.

It is not good when the USA comes across like a bunch of kooks, and I can well imagine people in China, Russia and or Iran, for example, who tune in and see this as the American opposition party, period (isn't it?/)

Now that side of it I hadn't considered. I imagine, though, to the extent that our politics are decipherable at all to an outsider, they're bound to view the thing with some certain curiosity.

OK, thinking about this for a bit: We're twenty years past the effective end of the Cold War. Why are these people bitching about Communism, and finding it effective? We have a lot of bad shit abroad in the world today, but except for a couple of blowhards in Latin America, Communism is, if not dead, at least on its dying gasps.

What's going on? I find it fascinating that based on responses here (I truly can't watch this stuff) they appear far more concerned with Commies than with terrorists.

Slow to answer, but with a slightly different take than the earlier ones:

If you are against terrorists, you cannot be anti-interventionist. Doesn't work. If you are against the commies in your midst (democrats), you can be as isolationist as you want.

Creationism and anti-science isn't just for Americans and Turks anymore:

Education Ministry chief scientist's dismissive remarks on evolution spark calls for his ouster

The Education Ministry's chief scientist sparked a furor among environmental activists and scholars yesterday with remarks questioning the reliability of evolution and global warming theory. The comments from Dr. Gavriel Avital, the latest in a series of written and oral statements casting doubts on the fundamental tenets of modern science, led several environmentalists to call for his dismissal.

"If textbooks state explicitly that human beings' origins are to be found with monkeys, I would want students to pursue and grapple with other opinions. There are many people who don't believe the evolutionary account is correct," Avital said yesterday. [TEACH THE CONTROVERSY!]

"There are those for whom evolution is a religion and are unwilling to hear about anything else. Part of my responsibility, in light of my position with the Education Ministry, is to examine textbooks and curricula," he said. "If they keep writing in textbooks that the Earth is growing warmer because of carbon dioxide emissions, I'll insist that isn't the case."

TEACH THE CONTROVERSY!

I suppose if the guy is ousted then Inhofe will find a way to get him to be the minority guest at some Senate hearing.

I would also add that the resurgence of the Birch Society, the Moonies and even the religious right are all dependent on a real or imagined communist threat. The religious right is fading fast and the only reason to align with neo-confederates and Birchers is to join forces to fight communism like the old days. Since there isn't a real global communist threat anymore they have to invent one. It's all about manufacturing an enemy.

More from the Israeli Education Ministry chief scientist:

Prior to his appointment, Avital said in a video interview with Machon Meir, a religious-Zionist Jewish studies institute, "Another scientific field that is problematic is biology, or life and environmental sciences. When your doctrine is based on Darwin's theory of evolution and its implications, you are standing on unreliable foundations - that is, there is no God, there was only something primeval, and then there are certain random developments which led to the apex of all creation, the human being.

"Today I am pleased that more and more scientists engaged in pure science, rather than being employed in the name of an ideology, are reaching the conclusion that the world must have a master. Nothing is given to chance," he said. "These are my opinions and I won't deny them just because I was appointed to an Education Ministry position."

Make the DI proud, Dr. Avital.

Chinese Crested Dog's Beautifully Descended Testicles Bring Divided Nation Together

Awed and inspired by the gloriously formed, beautifully descended testicles of Tommy, a hairless Chinese crested dog competing in his second Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, millions of U.S. citizens took stock of their lives and set aside their differences Tuesday to stare at the canine's perfectly groomed reproductive glands. "Those trembling orbs are so breathtakingly magnificent in and of themselves, yet they also contain within them such potential," said Allentown, PA machinist and former Tea Party member Roy Halbstead, who, upon seeing the dog's testicles on Animal Planet, immediately committed himself to the cause of reconciliation and healing America's rifts.

# 1 son is 3, autistic, and a stealthy little escape artist. Little rat wakes up around 4 every a.m. But for dead-bolts that need keys - we installed them after his first escape - he'd be outside playing on the swing set before the sun rose.

I've worked with autistic people for my health care job. The number of times I have been made a total fool of by my autistic clients, wow. :D One guy, his focus was beyond measure. He was astounding.

Yes ma'am, hence the comment. It's not like I don't see it all over the neighborhood. In the last week I've seen:

- 2 kids under five walking alone
- 3 kids under 12 on the very top peak of our neighbor's three story house
- kid laying across the back mantle of a car, face pressed against the back window

Always makes me sick/mad/scared all at the same time.

Even if you don't allow five-year-olds to go waking alone or let them play on rooftops or ride in cars without seatbelts, they manage to get away from their protectors. Maybe the reason people weren't rushing to ask how she got lost is that the joy of her recovery takes priority.

732 wrenchwench  Sat, Feb 20, 2010 5:28:13pm

OK, I found something I've been looking for all day (in between working and stuff.)

Nick Griffin was going to speak at Kenyon College at the invitation of the Robert A. Taft Society, a student organization on campus. It was cancelled, as mentioned in a post by Thanos earlier today, which resulted in Griffin canceling his trip to the US, and possibly missing out on an appearance at CPAC. The head of that Taft club, Taylor Somers, wrote a nice letter about why he canceled it, reproduced at One People's Project. He said, in part:

As for my own views which were dragged into all of this, I intend to embark on a path of radical self-examination. Those who know me personally will recognize I'm not a bigot, fascist, or totalitarian, but rather, perhaps, more of a contrarian (yet one who believes in a free society, even though we may find difficulty agreeing on what that is). Some of that which I have written over the past day and night could be described as knee-jerk reaction to being attacked personally, and I can recognize failures in my own judgment due to that fact. I think I have been beholden to a more abstract and theoretical point of view than is merited by real life, as has been made clear over the course of this trouble. I only ask that it not be assumed I am insincere in this appeal. I am being sincere, and I humbly submit my apologies to those of you voicing your legitimate concerns who I have attacked for recognizing my failures in judgment before I saw them myself.

I did indeed doubt his sincerety, and I went huntin'. He was outed by Kenyon alumni, bless 'em.

Taylor Somers, in addition to being a sophomore at Kenyon, is also "the founder and guardian angel of Occident, a movement to restore eternal truths in the West." He was recently interviewed on Amerika.org.

The interview was pulled from that site. However, it was reproduced here. A taste:

How do you describe your political orientation?

My political orientation is derived from a long process of revision and refinement. However, as of now I would say it corresponds roughly to what may be termed National-Revolutionism / Third-Positionism (too many influences to mention) , Pan-Europeanism (Alain de Benoist, Norman Lowell, Sir Oswald Moseley, Kai Murros, Jean Thiriart), and Archaeofuturism (Guillaume Faye).

The first broad designation (National-Revolutionism / Third-Positionism) describes a sense that 1) political boundaries ought to coincide with ethno-cultural concentrations; 2) each separate people constitutes a unique biological-cultural-spiritual organism with an interest in the continuity of its own existence and the furtherance of its development; 3) the biological, cultural, and economic independence — approaching the ideal of autarky — of each nation is preferable to the amalgamation thereof[emphasis added]; ....

Mr. Somers' Taft Society is part of CampusReform.org, which is part of The Leadership Institute, which was a CPAC 2010 sponsor. Developing the conservatives of tomorrow, today.

You don't need to be wearing a Klan uniform to preach a message of hatred. The JBS seems every bit as dedicated to dividing America along racial lines as the KKK.

You will get no defense of the JBS from me. The audience was doubtless composed of many who were not Birchers.

One would think but instead they're probably amped up to the extreme. Glenn Beck, the king of crazy, closed things out. Ron Paul take they straw poll. The conference was laced with Bircher rhetoric including the frequent and archaic use of the word Communist. Incidentally, CPAC will be defined by Glenn Beck for the rest of the year. That means that conservative will now have to deal with having been defined by Glenn Beck since after the name of the conference is Conservative Political Action Conference.

Another Breitbart CPAC meltdown. Tommy Christopher asks him about the racial implications of O'Keefe's pimp costume and O'Keefe's comments on it, and Brietbart starts ranting about the inner city:

Breitbart: You Caucasian Americans of the political Left: John Podesta, Wade Rathkey and Dale Rathkey, have been in charge of the black inner city community for eternity, and you've turned it into Hell. You turned intact black families into broken apart black families.
...
Why don't you go fix the inner city instead of going after people that expose it.

I thought this line from Breitbart was extremely telling:

Why don't you go fix the inner city instead of going after people that expose it.

It implied that there's a segment of the American population whose representation he indifferently cedes to his political opponents, and in fact his only interest in that community is the political advantage he can get by exposing/smearing it. He also finally appears to be explicitly connecting his flogging of the O'Keefe Acorn tapes to some sort of indictment of the "inner city".

That would be Dr. Regina Benjamin, who, I believe, was chosen for her background in medicine. If we wanted a skinny SG, we could have put Paris Hilton in the role, but I don't think she has an M.D.

If not now, then when? If not us, then who? I think that is a reasonable summary of the tea party sentiment for action. For over 100 years the government has grown stronger and more intrusive into our everyday lives. Hell, just a rollback to the governing philosophy of the Reagan years would be a huge painful incomplete first step.

But a good first step.

Weigel: Hannah Giles Explains Those Pimp and Prostitute Outfits

I asked Giles about a criticism that’s often been leveled against them — that they hyped up the video by wearing outrageous clothes in promotional materials and the videos’ introductions that they didn’t wear in the actual stings.

“We never claimed that he went in with a pimp costume,” said Giles. “That was b-roll. It was purely b-roll. He was a pimp, I was a prostitute, and we were walking in front of government buildings to show how the government was whoring out the American people.”

The right-wing meme is to blame the problems of the inner city on progressive policies or more bluntly, Democrats. Other than being an a highly partisan point of view it fails to take into account the complexity of the creation of inner city problems or what was traditionally called ghettos. This included the subjugation of these residents to industrial pollution, abusive labor practices, lower quality schools, abusive rental practices, etc.

Given that we as a nation have been through both Democrat and Republican majorities it's hard to justify pinning the blame on one party alone. That is if the government can be the sole arbiter of solving inner city problems. Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II did not make much inroads into providing a magical solution to the problems of the inner city. The same could be said for Carter, Clinton and now Obama. I do know that trying to pin the blame on ACORN is far fetched because the nature of inner cities were in place well before groups like those even existed or even the founding of this nation.

“We never claimed that he went in with a pimp costume,” said Giles.

After seeing that I've watched a couple of her Fox interviews so far, and while I haven't yet heard her outright say it, she seems perfectly willing to leave that impression there: pictures/video of the two of them in costume as she answers questions about their acorn "sting", or even when the interviewer outright makes the premise of a question them being in costume, and how stupid the ACORN employees must have been to have fallen for it, she never corrects the record.

For example, the last video I watched was her being interviewed on FNC's Red Eye. Here's the exchange:

Greg: It's amazing to me, because seriously you guys looked like you came from a frat party, where it was pimps and hoes. I would think they would have just said, "get out of here!", but in fact they were trying to help you set up a brothel.

Hannah: Yeah.

Greg: Go ahead.

And then she segues to a story about what they did at the ACORN office, having completely left the pimp/ho costume thing introduced to the record and unrefuted.

It makes perfect sense to me. Politics in America, especially right wing politics, has less to do with issues than with tribalism. This is their tribe. And the gays are an other. They've been "othered" by politicians in the GOp for decades. Rick Santorum and his man-on-dog garbage. Republican leader Dick Armey referring to Barney Frank as "Barney Fag". It sorta takes my breath away, but there it is.

Social-conservative tribalism is way more powerful than any individual issue you can name. Issues are secondary or tertiary. The preacher preaches that gay people are devilish, they believe it. They hear from Focus on the Family that the fags can't be allowed in the classroom, they believe it. Their friends are straight and dis queers, they follow along.

The joke is that Democratic politics is a circular firing squad. Which is true! Frank and honest discussion of ideas will always seem less efficient than robotic adherence to tribal politics. Because democrats are a loose coalition of ideas often at cross purposes. They're not as tribalist. Berkeley radicals have little in common with bloke union guys in Philly. But they both would rather swallow bleach that vote Republican.

I give what I get. I thought it was already "open season" when you wrote that I was "going to get killed".

I had a quick look through the thread. There's quite lot of rancor for Beck in here, which is quite unusual for a non left-wing blog(??). At least I ~think~ the posters are mostly conservatives, libertarians, and objectivists... or maybe not???

Hello, my name is Slumbering Behemoth, registered republican and Goldwater conservative, and I think Beck is an idiotic, braying jack-ass.

He is also a Bircher Booster, which makes him a conspiracy mongering scumbag. And that's a fact, not an opinion.

re: #914 Fierce Guppy

I'd be hard pressed to find anyone who's an Objectivist around here.

On the other hand, there are plenty of folks that are conservative. There are even some liberals, myself included, that post here. Mostly, however, folks here are skeptical of the wingnuts on BOTH sides and have a fairly independent streak. That's been my experience so far, anyhow.

re: #904 prairiefire

If you like him for his fierce style of outspokenness, he's still wrong.

Glenn Beck's delivery is good, too. I think he is for the most part, right. What don't you like about him. 1) His chastisement of "Progressives". 2) His advocacy for Individual Rights 3) His advocacy for limited government and fiscal responsibility. 4) His enormous respect for America's Founding Fathers. 5) His advocacy for personal responsibility.

I assume you watched the speech. How about you tell me what you thought was wrong with it?

Tony.

Yet, I have watched him on his show chastise birthers and troofers.

What did he say in support of the Birchers?

Time for sleep here in the Heartland of America. Silly notions like the path of progressives leads to the loss of liberty and money. Without the initiatives of the Obama administration, America would still be hemorrhaging money on its on soil and blood and liberty on foreign soil.
Say hi to Peter Jackson for me.

He's done more than that. He wrote a forward to a new edition of Skousen's book and has promoted it so aggressively that it's in the Amazon.com Top 100 for Sales right now. It's crazy.

re: #924 Lidane

I forgot about that, thanks for the reminder.

Also to add, if anyone is still listening, Alex Jones also advocates for limited gov't, individual liberty and responsibility, and respect for America's founding fathers.

This does not change the fact that Jones is a toxic, conspiracy mongering freak, nor the fact that his brand of "patriotism" is historically inaccurate and so far off the mark as to be on the moon. The same applies to Beck, though to a lesser degree.

Say hi to Peter Jackson for me.

Really? Your country has no real money to hemorrhage, prairiefire. It's dry retching. Just where has all that government made fiduciary media gone? , America's economy was in the shit before the bailouts, and it is ~still~ in the shit, only now with much far greater mountain of debt to deal with. Tell me, how would a "Progressive" deal with all this debt?

I have no idea what you mean by ..."on its on soil and blood and liberty on foreign soil". It's quite unintelligible.

I take Progressives be quite happy for the government to engage in an insane amount of deficit spending, willing to vest Government with the power to prop up losers in the marketplace with taxpayer's money, a movement that seeks an ever more centralised role for government in the area of economics, a movement that works towards further distribution of wealth as though wealth were a public asset, a movement that promotes taxpayer funded entitlement programmes and inculcates ever more dependency of government handouts, a movement that... Oh wait, perhaps I'm confusing ratbas^h^h^h^h^h^hProgressive ideas with their outcomes.

Naughty me.

BTW, screw Peter Jackson. ~You~ say "hi" to him.

Tony.

Well, I've hunted for the video clip but couldn't find it. All I know about birchers is that they are anti-communist. Shit... Is anyone on this forum not anti-communist? However, I'm not familiar Bircher conspiracy theories.

Just reading through the users' reviews of "The 5,000 Year Leap" to which Glenn Beck wrote the foreword. It's looking good. I might read it myself some day.

I'll do some research into the John Birch Society later. The start of another working week begins tomorrow.

Tony.

That's better. :-)

For fucks sake, dude. Hitler was fucking anti-communist. How thin do you want to stretch this "Us vs. Them" meme in order to dismiss ugly ideology?

European fascists parties are anti-Jihad. I too am anti-Jihad, but I will not break bread with fucking Euro-fascists because of that one issue. Their motives go deeper and are far more sinister than simply opposing radical, islamic Jihad.

Same with the Birchers. Their opposition to the dieing boogie man of communism comes with an ugly, rotted ideology. Do. Not. Want.

You mean like the Bloods are anti-Crip, "dude"? Just how far do you want to stretch the line between them, "dude"? Oh, and, "dude"? What ugly ideology am I dismissing, "dude"? Surely, not the ideology of Individual Rights, personal responsibility, limited government and fiscal responsibility, "dude"? If you have anything good to say about Fascism/Nazism/Communism/and theocracy, "dude", then let it all hang out, "dude". Until then, I'm going to assume it still is "Us vs. Them", as in, us vs. the ideas that gave rise to Communism/Nazism/Fascism/and theocracy, "dude".

Shit! Now I have to bike fast to work in order not to be late.

re: #933 Fierce Guppy

the ideas that gave rise to Communism/Nazism/Fascism/and theocracy

1. You're treating four different political systems as interchangeable. They're not.

2. You're also assuming the ideas that gave rise to each of them are similar. Again, they're not.

Try again.

re: #934 Lidane

What is sorely needed is a field of phylogenetics for ideas. After all, they are never conceived in a vacuum as you seem to think but rather in a pre-existing culture of accepted notions, practices, and relations of power which can either foster or hamper their development. Three totalitarian systems are born in Western Europe within a ~20 year~ period, but have little in common, says you. Well, except the belief in the command economy, the belief in change through violence, and the belief that the individual is subservient to the dictates of the State which represents the collective good. So, thanks for your reply. It wasn't much, but thanks just the same.

Tony.
