Each minute bursts in the burning room,
The great globe reels in the solar fire,
Spinning the trivial and unique away.
(How all things flash! How all things flare!)
What am I now that I was then?
May memory restore again and again
The smallest color of the smallest day:
Time is the school in which we learn,
Time is the fire in which we burn.

So anyone else looking forward to watching the CSPAN debate on healthcare?

Bedtime already?

Hey, I asked this in the last thread, but I’ll re-ask it here:

A friend of mine is having difficulty adjusting to civilian life after having been a sniper in the Army. Lizards, do you know, outside of what the Army already provides, of good resources for ex-military people having difficulty adjusting to civilian life? I don’t mean, like, direct therapy or anything, but more someone who can figure out some career path or something. He did okay for awhile as a trainer for police departments, but he doesn’t like it, for some reason he can’t even express.

He needs someone who knows what he’s going through, I guess, and help him figure out a next step from here.

Any advice gladly taken.

Sure am! Because that’s how I roll.
Looking forward to the wailing and gnashing of teeth after, too. Some of it may even be my own.

I’m sure some of it will be my own. But like I said I find some solace in my memory of how the Q&A played out.

Lets see O can “Bar-rock” their world a second time…

Obdi, I don’t know, but I’ll ask some friends/family who were in the military. One of them still works in the (non VA) health system, so she might be a good source.

I’ll let you know anything I find out— lots of lizards here will have info. (Hoops, I bet, others too).
Best of luck to you and your friend.

While we’re discussing religion: Newsweek has a really interesting article this week about an archaeological dig in Turkey, about eleven thousand years old. It’s a giant, very elaborate worship complex, and the guy digging it out has a hypothesis that rather than agriculture and cities giving rise to formal religion, this indicates that hunter-gatherers drew together to worship, and that this in turn gave rise to agriculture et al.

Very neat stuff, regardless of whether you buy his concept or not.

re: #8 SanFranciscoZionist

There have been several publications/articles over the past couple of years about excavations in southern Turkey, on sites that appear to be for religious purposes before what has traditionally been thought of as cities.

Agree that it is fascinating, thanks for bringing it to attention… I’ll go dig it up.

From previous articles it appears as if some of the symbolic figures include lions, which would make lots of sense given they would have been the apex predators in that region (before modern man took over that role.)

re: #11 Obdicut

It’s complicated. Snipers are appreciated and respected for the work they do. However, the way they kill deliberately often makes other soldiers reluctant to associate with them. What is true is that snipers are almost never taken prisoner, even in our current wars. They are normally shot out of hand, not given any chance to surrender.

National Geo for one, about a year ago, this weeks Newsweek has an article too.

Very strange place. Most of the “art” and artifacts seem very “out of place.” for the time period that they believe it was settled (I believe 13000bce-10000bce).

Hey, I asked this in the last thread, but I’ll re-ask it here:

Lizards, do you know, outside of what the Army already provides, of good resources for ex-military people having difficulty adjusting to civilian life? I don’t mean, like, direct therapy or anything, but more someone who can figure out some career path or something. He needs someone who knows what he’s going through, I guess, and help him figure out a next step from here.

Any advice gladly taken.

Even though you say he rejects the direct therapy, there may be something for him in some of the programs on offer here. Even if no one can draw him a map, it may help to know that other people have gotten over this mountain before him.

No, Merriam-Webster tells us that it is derived from the Latin cunnus, ‘vulva’ and lingere ‘to lick’. I assume, though, that ‘lingere’ and ‘lingua’ are both derived from the word for ‘tongue’.

‘Cunning’ is Middle English, from the same root as ‘ken’. The base word means ‘to know’.

Senate votes to extend USA Patriot Act for 1 year

The Senate voted Wednesday to extend for a year key provisions of the nation’s counterterrorism surveillance law that are scheduled to expire at the end of the month. In agreeing to pass the bill, Senate Democrats retreated from adding new privacy protections to the USA Patriot Act.

The Senate approved the bill on a voice vote with no debate. It now goes to the House.

“Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) today asked the Obama administration to investigate what he called “the greatest scientific scandal of our generation” — the actions of climate scientists revealed by the Climategate files, and the subsequent admissions by the editors of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report (AR4).

Senator Inhofe also called for former Vice President Al Gore to be called back to the Senate to testify.

“In [Gore’s] science fiction movie, every assertion has been rebutted,” Inhofe said. He believes Vice President Gore should defend himself and his movie before Congress. “

Well, this should help fight societal decay:

No Cussing movement up for state recognition

California is one step closer to cleaning up its language while at the same time achieving a legislative miracle.

This morning, legislators will vote on a bill to declare next week California Cuss Free Week. The bill is the idea of South Pasadena High School student McKay Hutch, who started a No Cussing Club at his junior high in 2007.

“I want to bring awareness to people about how we speak to each other,” he said. “Your words become your actions, your actions become your behavior, your behavior becomes your character and your character becomes your destiny.”

In other words, those dirty words lead to dirty deeds and a bleak future, Hutch said.

But beyond washing out California’s collective mouth with soap for one week, Hutch has united political rivals for a common cause.

The bill is co-sponsored by Anthony Portantino, a Democrat from Pasadena, and Cameron Smyth, a Republican from Santa Clarita.

Instead of lobbing cuss words at each other in Sacramento, the two California Assemblymen are trying to bring civility back for at least one week, Portantino said.

But if today’s vote doesn’t go Portantino’s way, he said he might let a four-letter word slip out.

California… our air may be dirty, but our language is clean!

The US embassy in Iraq cost about 800 million all told. Keeping in mind that the new embassy in London is in the heart of that city in one of the best locations it’s easy to see why the price tag is up to 1 billion. Also considering that ground breaking won’t take place until 2013 so you have inflation taking place for construction.

Here is the winning design from KieranTimberlake. As you can see from the rendering there is no moat that was alleged by the critics. It’s pond located in the park grounds adjacent to the building. You can see an aerial rendering there which I’m pretty sure is being overlayed with a flag of Turkey by some wingnuts as we type. It does have a bit of a crescent shape in the park plan view.

The fear of the word curse is probably associated with its use during more archaic time when it was associated with supernatural powers and other magic. Some people consider the word darn a curse. From the Online Etymology Dictionary:

curse

O.E. curs “a prayer that evil or harm befall one,” of uncertain origin, perhaps O.Fr. curuz “anger,” or L. cursus “course.” Connection with cross is unlikely. No similar word exists in Gmc., Romance, or Celtic. Meaning “to swear profanely” is from c.1230. Curses as a histrionic exclamation is from 1885. The curse “menstruation” is from 1930.

darn

tame curse word, 1781, Amer.Eng. euphemism for damn, said to have originated in New England when swearing was a punishable offense; if so, its spread was probably infl. by ‘tarnal, short for Eternal, as in By the Eternal (God), favorite exclamation of Andrew Jackson, among others. Related: Darndest (superl., 1844).

The religious origins are obvious.

Doesnt explain the 2010 CA usage, though. Really, why should the word ‘curse’ itself be too ‘bad’ to use? Or why not ‘profanity’? Or ‘obscenity’? Etc.

My serious point here is that euphemism in speech is a kind of doublethink in the Orwellian sense. NewSpeak consists of nothing but euphemisms; that is, in fact, its defining characteristic. Euphemisms should be shunned.

Jesus tittyfucking christ.

In my experience the very worst sort of people practice this kind of pious faux civility- they express the vilest ideas but change a couple of letters so that the actual sequence of letters is different. Classic example would be those religious types who express their mysogyny by calling women ‘scrunts’.

You ever see SLC Punk! Pretty good movie about two punk rockers in SLC.

What happens is that in the more repressed communities you will find more of what could be called extreme because of the repression. Something akin to “absence makes the heart grow fonder.” I guess you can add abstinence make the log grow harder. My bad.

I get alot of shit about music here, and rightly so I suppose, because I’m so rigid and old fashioned…that said, 99.5% of all riffs have already been played…somebody stole it from someone before them and that was always true…that’s why I go all the way back to the beginning and have so much respect for the cats that dreamed up that stuff…you can change the sound, the beat, the attack, but nothing is original anymore, if it’s played on real instruments by real people…innovation is a hard fought commodity now days…I’m a guitar/keyboard RB guy, and don’t care much for anything that cannot be played on stage…but I like new talent and am always looking out for something fresh sounding, even tho it’s the same old riff again….kinda hard to explain I guess

I don’t know but it almost sounds like a curse. I don’t really believe in those things though. I mean, look at Chris and Dana Reeve.

re: #305 albusteve

I get alot of shit about music here, and rightly so I suppose, because I’m so rigid and old fashioned…that said, 99.5% of all riffs have already been played…somebody stole it from someone before them and that was always true…that’s why I go all the way back to the beginning and have so much respect for the cats that dreamed up that stuff…you can change the sound, the beat, the attack, but nothing is original anymore, if it’s played on real instruments by real people…innovation is a hard fought commodity now days…I’m a guitar/keyboard RB guy, and don’t care much for anything that cannot be played on stage…but I like new talent and am always looking out for something fresh sounding, even tho it’s the same old riff again…kinda hard to explain I guess

There’s plenty of music I like that isn’t really able to be performed truly live, but at my core I am most of all about live music. I was hostile to anything without live drums until I found a band with a drum machine I really could not deny was brilliant. There’s finite riffs and finite chord progressions, but I think there’s an infinite number of ways to approach rock music. It’s like, the English language is still the same, and it’s been said by lit geeks that there’s only, what 8 basic plots? But there’s still always new stories to be told. There’s still originality, it’s just not perfect originality, it’s building on other things. Music evolves, we still use the same basic principles the Beatles came up with for multi-track recording and tape-loops.

In the ’80s, the joke was that neo-nazi, skinhead punks stole their riffs from The Stones, who in turn had stolen their riffs from the old blues/R&B bands.

Funniest thing of all was that the whole skinhead movement was kicked off in Jamaica! And was in the main, in terms of music culture, continued by reggae loving anti-racist skinheads. The racist skin heads were always just a sad sideshow, culturally speaking. The only band the racist ones - properly known as boneheads - had was Skrewdriver. Yes, you’ve never heard of them - no one has. Here’s the real thing:

Heh. It was Christmastime and massive traffic issues, and I don’t have a new york accent normally, just under stress — but I do consciously employ it in certain situations.

As legend tells it, the song was written after an altercation a couple of them had with Docs-wearing skin-heads. Though the “trippin’ on mushrooms” thing is probably closer to the truth.

I was never a fan. I do remember watching a documentary about them once and finding James Hetfield to be rather normal. People tend to mellow with age so with rock musicians the changes sometimes seem rather stark or contrasting to their earlier youthful persona. Sort of like listening to Robert Plant talk these days compared to when I first saw him in magazine when I was a kid.

The back up band sound great too. Really capture the feel of a lot popular music from the 70s and 80s.

re: #426 Gus 802

Yeah, I’m restraining myself from posting more of the videos, because it’s a movie (orig a Bway play) with loads of music, excellent music, — lots of stuff going on too. It’s a commentary on musical styles, but also international politics, and finally (most of all) gender.

Really brilliant. I linked that specific Origin of Love song when I was making the cheap joke about Boston, Kansas, Asia— “travel exhausts me” — but the screenplay is hella witty. The person who says ‘travel exhausts me” is someone who was trapped in east berlin and is now in america, speaking to a teenager who never left Bilgewater USA.

428 iceweasel  Thu, Feb 25, 2010 1:20:32am

Oh also, I assume people know, but the video from Hedwig and the Angry Inch that I linked, the “Origin of Love” song, has great animation, and the story about the ‘origin of love’ comes direct from Plato— the Symposium. It’s an animated rendition of one of the stories in that Platonic dialogue.

Also it’s the key to the movie and the central character as well as the opening scene.

Anyway— Hedwig and the Angry Inch. If you don’t already know it, rent it.

Went off searching for things and came upon Elizabeth Montgomery. I couldn’t help but notice that three of the main actors died so close in age:

Elizabeth Montgomery - 62
Dick York - 63
Dick Sargent - 64

Sad to see them go at such a young age.

It was a fun show in its day, but the latter day remakes/exploitation of it have fallen far short, IMO.

431 iceweasel  Thu, Feb 25, 2010 1:34:43am

Should also add here: the lyrics are essentially the same as this one person in the Symposium— the idea that humans were once two. Some of us all male, some of us all female, some of us both.

Then the gods grew afraid and split us— and so now we’re ‘poor two legged creatures’, some of us drawn to the same sex and some of us to the other, but what each of us is looking for is our other half.

This is greek and so ok with homosexuality, but it’s also deeply western w/r/t the idea of looking for the other half to complete us.

It’s really not a coincidence that the Christian philosophers plundered Plato, and specifically this text. They cut out everything about homosexuality or tolerating it, accepting it, and kept the idea that man and woman are ‘one flesh’ when married. Romantic love, chivalry — all this comes from that.

Just sayin.

True, I was never a fan of remakes. Once the flower blooms and is gone it is gone forever. I’ve said it once before. The actors become actors acting like actors acting.

Goodness, some Delmore Schwartz in the morning. Along with Freedy Johnston spilling from my daughters room, a light dusting of large snowflakes and the aroma of fresh coffee, maybe there is a god.

—-
So that when the great blue bell of silence is stilled and stopped or broken
By the babel and chaos of desire unrequited, irritated and frustrated,
When the heart has opened and when the heart has spoken
Not of the purity and symmetry of gratification, but action of insatiable distraction’s dissatisfaction,

Then the heart says, in all its blindness and faltering emptiness:
There is no God. Because I am hope. And hope must be fed.
And then the great blue bell of silence is deafened, dumbed,
and has become the tomb of the living dead.

You’re going to be shocked, but you can still get a loan as far down as 3.5%. Now, the interest rate is a bit above prime in order to do that, which sucks, but rates are really favorable right now anyway, so the equation sorta balanced.

I love the apps on this but my biggest daily issue is email. The droid will only push gmail accts where the bb handles them all. I guess I can live with checking it every 5 mins and I’ll eventually figure out how to set up all of my different signatures. I had to do some searching to figure out how to set up a yahoo acct on my droid where the bb all I had to do was type in the address and my password and it took care of everything for me. Vendor lock-in is annoying. I mean, yeah, I understand the business principle of making all “your” products work nicely together. But in a world where there’s so many different products to choose from, it should be a basic operating principle to make sure the other guys’ stuff works just as well, so that you make your new product look smokingly good no matter whose email client, document reader, etc., is being used.

Sounds like me last week. I got myself out of it by starting to really plan for spring. I’m just about finished putting my seed orders together and have gone over my inventory from last season. I starting planting indoors next week. I find it hard to remain winter blah when looking at hundreds of pretty plants and imagining all the fresh food that’s going to start up again in a few months.

I am really impatient though. At the end of last summer we put in a new well which meant digging up a perennial bed and huge part of the lawn. The silver lining in that was that I planted a huge new perennial bed and about 400 spring bulbs. I’m like a kid waiting for Christmas to come. :)

why did i get pleasure of watching the two American princesses fail on the downhill yesterday? Because they are both drama queens to the max. Vonn and Mancuso, I know nbc plays it up for tv ratings, but it’s now taken a turn into reality tv. but both of them really know how to up the theatrics for the cameras.. the way they both act when the cameras are on them at the finish line is acting class 101. Mancuso with the tiara on her head, Vonn just well taking the limelight..like I said it’s nbc playing it to the hilt, and I guess it works..I’m here talking about it instead of health care, auto recalls, war, etc… ah well I guess I’m just another tv watching sheeple :)))) but i did enjoy seeing them fail, I gotta admit it.

Why the Hatin’ on Olympic competitors and the events?

So, they idea of someone who dedicates their lives in the pursuit of excellence is a buzzkill to some…

not hating the competitors or events, I just wish they didn’t play up the theatrics so much. and I’d like to see a more balanced coverage, but as I said I blame the media because it’s all about tv ratings. But it’s all in good sport and competition and it’s a topic for conversation. I’m allowed an opinion. if you don’t like it, tough..

I’ve watched curling and I can honestly say “I don’t get it!” Is it like chess on ice or something? I don’t see how they can call it a sport, throwing rocks with handles and sweeping the ice don’t seem too athletic to me. Anyone care to enlighten me as to the object of the game?

Nice… guess that qualifies as a rant ;)

Have you ever been involved with youth sports? Coached or participated? One of your kids, or family?

It’s easy to allow cynicism to cloud that picture, but the achievements and rewards are pretty lofty goals to have.

As far as the ‘faults’ you cite… I think it’s a fairly low percentage of overall participants - welcome to the Human Race.

Playing to ratings is what the media does. I”ve found the coverage on MSNBC to be much more enjoyable to watch due to less side-bar interviews and stories (I did enjoy the story on the blind Husky sled dog on NBC though last night).

Years ago, they just showed the events, the sport itself. That mostly played to male audiences. to increase viewership they give the human side of the stories to entice women to watch who normally wouldn’t be interested in much more than the skating venues

Morning all! Saw the snail joke up-thread and it reminded me of another one:

Guy’s sitting in his chair when there’s a knock at the door. He opens the door, looks around, doesn’t see anything.

He goes back to his chair, when there’s another knock at the door. He opens it, looks around, doesn’t see anything. Then he happens to look down, and sees a snail on the stoop. He picks it up and throws it as hard as he can.

A year later, the guy’s sitting in his chair and there’s a knock at the door. He opens it, looks around, doesn’t see anything. He looks down, and there’s the snail.

And the snail says, “What the hell was that all about?”

So, now I have to make a lifestyle association about my politics if I want to buy a McCafe, Dunkin Donuts, or Starbucks in the morning?

So, now I have to make a lifestyle association about my politics if I want to buy a McCafe, Dunkin Donuts, or Starbucks in the morning?

I got downdinged for a “slouching towards a totalitarian democracy” post long ago, but isn’t that the very essence?

I’m gonna need some more coffee. :-)

I finally found a beer that I can tolerate with out gagging! Leinenkugels Sunset Wheat. RWC’s so proud… Normally I can’t even smell the stuff but this ones not bad!

Yea… ok… I’m sorry… it’s just that I get emotional about these things. Do you know how many plate spinners and ventriloquists and insult artist and all sort of other variety artists are out of work?

Check those people you call “street people” roaming around the alleys and dumpsters of your city. If you ask them, you will find out that many of them are ex-variety artist who have been put out of a job because of things like MTV and American Idol.

How can a balloon animal tier compete with a Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction? Do you know how many trained poodle acts were put out of work by PETA?

So, be kind to old variety artists. You never know when you may need one. And if birthday clowns ever become popular again, you certainly don’t want one that you abused when they were a bum to come back to your kids birthday party and terrorize the little jerks.

I think the problem is that they are still talking past each other.

Democrats want a plan to insure another 30 million. A secondary effect is that some percentage of emergency room cost and impaction will reduce, thus reducing the occurrences of the most expensive treatments. This would be combined with non-market cost controls.

Republicans want reduced costs independent of expanded coverage.

The two goals seem to overlap only by a little.

So, a fellow from back east is out in Texas, shooting quail. One of the birds he pots lands inside a rancher’s fence and back easter prepares to hop the wire and retrieve his bird.

Rancher’s there. “Now hold up a minute, sir,” sez he. “That bird’s on my land. It’s mine, unless I give it to you.”

Back easter sez: “Listen, buddy, I’m a lawyer, and where I’m from, we settle these things with a little negotiation and such. Let’s talk about it.”

Rancher: “Fellow, out here in Texas, we don’t use lawyers or such like. We settle it like men.”

Back easter: “Ok, how do we do it?” Back easter is 20 years younger and a hell of a lot stronger than the rancher.

Rancher explains: Each man gets to land 3 blows on the other, Rancher, as the oldest, goes first.

He walks up to back-easter, toe-kicks him in the groin, drives his knee into the guy’s face, and boots him once in the ribs at full-force.

Back easter staggers to his feet, wipes blood away and fixes his eyes with deadly intent on the rancher.

Rancher sez: “Ya know what? The bird’s all yours, son. You win.”

I don’t think calling real pain and suffering ‘sob stories’ is a very nice thing to do. Sob story normally implies that it’s made up.

There is really no need to dramatize a lot of stories of struggles with insurance companies. For example, a friend of mine has a fucked-up wrist that needs re-constructive surgery, but his insurance won’t pay for it. They’ll only pay for pain meds. So he gets to slowly develop an addiction while suffering.

Do you consider that a ‘sob story’?

I think ‘sob story’ generally means a tale - true or not, it hardly matters - shared with the intent to evoke emotion in order to manipulate the hearer into a course of action to the benefit of the one telling the tale.

Well, yeah, that’s why it’s called what it is. The truth of the tale hardly matters one way or another. No one listens to such talk in order to be informed about the matters involved - they listen to be moved by it.

It’s human nature, after all, to attempt to put an individual face or story to a larger problem, in order to give a sense of scale or perspective to a thing too abstract to be understood otherwise.

Then again, there’s hardly any point in pretending that the stories aren’t presented with the intent of swaying the audience, on the basis of an emotional appeal, to some action or other.

No, it’s a recent injury from a home accident. He can use the wrist just fine, he just has a lot of pain, so they consider surgery to fix that pain elective surgery, since the pain can be controlled with meds.

They also come from both sides of the aisle. There’s a special category of stories set in Canada or Britain, where something HAPPENED that happens every day in the United States as well, but which is meant to scare you away from anything that could ever even start to lead to ‘socialized medicine’.

As I said, there’s really no reason to exaggerate. There are plenty of absolutely fucking heartbreaking stories out there. If the stories being told are exaggerated, they don’t have to be.

And ‘sob story’ is dismissive.

“sob story (plural sob stories) (idiomatic) A sad story, especially one intended elicit sympathy.”

Gee, nothing there about making it up, is there. Or does your definition only appear in the Obdicut Rhetoric Dictionary?

No, it’s a recent injury from a home accident. He can use the wrist just fine, he just has a lot of pain, so they consider surgery to fix that pain elective surgery, since the pain can be controlled with meds.

And surgery is far more expensive than the meds are.

re: #681 Guanxi88

No one listens to such talk in order to be informed about the matters involved - they listen to be moved by it.

See, I knew your interwebs psychiatry degree would come in handy.

Then again, there’s hardly any point in pretending that the stories aren’t presented with the intent of swaying the audience, on the basis of an emotional appeal, to some action or other.

Of course they are. When we’re talking about pain, suffering, and health, we’re talking about emotional subjects. That doesn’t mean that the stories can’t communicate real, actual problems with the health insurance setup in this country, nor does it mean these stories are useless for informing us about possible solutions.

For example, one of the reasons in the above example that the insurance company is not fixing my friend’s wrist is they have no particular reason to believe he’ll be on their insurance forever. Extended out twenty years, it’d probably be cheaper for them to pay for the surgery and not the meds, but since he’ll probably eventually switch jobs and switch insurance, it can be someone else’s problem.

Thinking about that can lead you, whatever your feelings are about health insurance, to a realization that in the current setups insurance companies delaying the providing of care can often mean that they don’t have to actually pay for the care. So, you could reasonably conclude that as long as patients switch between insurances as they do now, insurance companies have an economic incentive to provide short-term rather than long-term solutions.

I have about three minutes before I need to get ready for work, so this has to be quick—

Since I’m the one who brought ‘sob story’ into the discussion, I want to have you understand that way too much emotion and weight is being put into the term. I can love a movie I’ve watched and hand it to a friend and say, “Watchthis with a box of Kleenex cuz it’s a real tear-jerker.” I think it I had used tear-jerker in place of sob story, we would still have the same objections.

Dude— he’s gone to a doctor already. That is not the point. He has had steroid treatment— which is hardly without side effects— already. The diagnosis is that only re-constructive surgery will be effective in actually treating the pain, rather than controlling it.

The solution is known. The insurance company won’t pay for it. That’s the situation. And, instead of garnering sympathy for my friend, the point of this story is that insurance companies are market-driven to deliver short-term solutions rather than long-term ones, given the way health insurance is structured.

Hey, a placebo effect is still an effect, this is the thing.

And, as it seems to work on the principle of counter-irritation, there does seem to be some neurological basis for the practice as well.

lemme add, as well, that the reason for the durability of the practice in China and elsewhere is not merely a cultural phenomenon. Out in the Hill Country, and quietly in the City, there’s a lot of veterinary acupuncture practiced. So far as I can tell, the placebo effect doesn’t work on animals.

Acupuncture’s cheap, dirt cheap. Most of my other gig’s clients pay outta pocket, although many policies do cover it.

I can vouch for that. I’ve mentioned this before, but I had a situation where I had such pain in both shoulders that I couldn’t lift my arms much higher than my waist. Surgeon wanted to operate on both - singly or at once. My wife knew of an acupuncturist that came to our town twice a week. Decided to give it a try before having surgery.

He asked me to put my hands against the wall, and walk toward the wall, walking my hands up it until I couldn’t take any more. I did, and got a little over waist high.

He gave me two treatments. At the end of the second, he asked me to try the test again. I was able to walk right up to the wall, with my arms extended completely vertically. And no pain at all.

Total cost was $130 - $65 per visit. That was almost four years ago, and I’ve had no trouble since.

It’s not for everything, or everyone, but it is certainly worth looking at!

See my 745. The problem is structural, so acupuncture is probably going to be of limited use. That’s if I could convince him to try it.

The point, again:

He has insurance. His doctor, and a specialist, both agree that an operation has a very high chance of ending his pain permanently. His insurance company will not pay for this treatment— nor will they pay for acupuncture. They will pay for pain medicine, despite the health risks from those. This demonstrates a common problem with health insurance; health insurers are used to patients switching insurance often enough that it is beneficial to an insurer to delay any expensive treatment as much as possible.

Hmmm…I honestly don’t know how effective it would be for misaligned bones. Ouch! A grand is pretty pricey, but to be honest, things aren’t nearly as expensive where I live. I like Guan’s idea of checking out the school, though - and I’ll keep my fingers crossed that your friend can get some treatment through something like that….

And that it works - even temporarily!

re: #752 Obdicut

Hey, of course acupuncture’s only gonna provide some analgesic effect. IN the short-term, that’s about the best thing that could be offered, pending the surgery. At a minimum, he might be able to avoid the medications, or at least reduce his dosages somewhat.

He’s in a lousy situation, no getting around it.

God, I’m tired of hearing about how awesome HSA’s are from the Republicans. I bet they are if you have, you know, extra money laying around to put into one.

I’m sick of hearing about how business groups should be the ones creating insurance pools and not the Feds. EXCEPT most business organizations DO have insurance pools that people can buy into but they cost a lot. The exchanges would create a large pool because the Federal Gov can create a large fucking pool of people.

Why am I watching this, I knew I would get pissed off.

re: #753 subsailor68

Yeah. It would be a huge help for him to get off the meds for awhile, for all the reasons that Steve has said, but he already has to call into work occasionally due to the pain in his wrist being too great. So, he’s going to be very resistant to trying anything that might not be effacacious.

Which displays another banana-peel in our current health insurance setup in the US: people get insurance through their jobs. Being chronically sick makes it much more likely you’ll lose your job, even with legal protections in place. So, insurance companies also know that a switch (or a loss) of insurers is more common in people who are chronically ill than in the general population, giving them more reason to delay treatment.

A) What makes you think I have a spare grand just lying around?

B) He’s never accepted money from me for anything. Proud guy.

The point, again, is not about my friend’s situation. It is about the fact that he has health insurance and they will not pay for an operation that his doctors agree is the best medical course of action for him.

Stocking shelves at grocery stores has a similar effect.

“Why the hell did you put the 25 pound charcoal bag on top of the toilet paper?!?!”
Sigh.

.Is there any greater hypocrisy; than to condemn reconciliation today as the darkest lair of those dastardly scoundrels the despicable, liberal, socialist, Democrats…?

Only equal in hypocrisy to the same group of Democratic leadership that back in 2005 were condemning the use of the same process they themselves are ready to enact. No one is clean here.

Well then…I say, “let the games begin”!

It’s not for me or mine, I’m very fortunate, I have Medicare and the VA as my providers and “she who must be obeyed” is provided co-pay medical insurance through her employer.

In the rural community where we live most of the farming families can’t afford the exorbitant cost of health insurance for their families. The mother often must work outside the home just to be able to afford the cost… or if fortunate, have employment that provides co-pay, medical insurance for herself and her family.

It’s a very serious budgetary and humanitarian issue out here in the boondocks!

There is a piece of surveillance tape floating around out there in the Kinko’s training program showing the day a woman came in to a Kinkos with a large, dead, squid, and began to photocopy it.

Hi folks I’m baaack!

Let me tell you about a little experience I had when working in a bead store…
I was working a ground level street front in a brand new store right in downtown L.A. A little boy about 4 years ran up to the door, which had a security buzzer on it, and started pounding had and yelling for me to let him in. I called out to him “wheres your Parents?” F**k my parents! Let me in! He screamed. A few moments after I shook my head at hes demand he was joined by three more little boys each about a year older then the others, 5, 6, and 7 years old if I had to guess if heights any indication of age that is, all doing the same thing, screaming and yelling for me to let them in as well as pounding on the door. Not only were they screaming and yelling they were threatening me with violence, making gang signs and grabbing themselves in a very insulting manor.
Now we had a strict policy of “No children allowed in the store without an accompanying parent” Because the beads were in easy reach of a child and we didn’t want them all over the floor and we had a sign to that effect on the door in large easy to read lettering.
I subsequently called the building security and when the guard walked out to confront he saw the Mother “on the phone” just out of sight of the windows watching her children make the huge scene. As soon as she saw the security guard she called the boy’s off and they all ran and caught a bus that conviently pulled up 20ft away.
I figure that the Mother was trying to get them inside the store, raise havoc and steal as much as they could then get out quickly. If I had let them in the destruction they would have caused was considerable. So much for “Parental Supervision”! Quite frankly I wish the LAPD had been there to take the kids from that so called Mother of theirs and put them in protective care. Future criminals in the making! Makes you just so proud, don’t it?///
