Rep. Trent Franks: African-Americans were better off under slavery.
Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) — one of the most conservative member of Congress, according to a new National Journal ranking — decried the strained state of political discourse in an interview today with blogger-activist Mike Stark. While defending hate radio host Rush Limbaugh, Franks said bipartisanship and “true tolerance” is about “being halfway decent to each other in spite of the differences.” But when the conversation turned to abortion, Franks made a clearly indecent comment, claiming that African-Americans were probably better off under slavery than they are today:
FRANK: In this country, we had slavery for God knows how long. And now we look back on it and we say “How brave were they? What was the matter with them? You know, I can’t believe, you know, four million slaves. This is incredible.” And we’re right, we’re right. We should look back on that with criticism. It is a crushing mark on America’s soul. And yet today, half of all black children are aborted. Half of all black children are aborted. Far more of the African-American community is being devastated by the policies of today than were being devastated by policies of slavery. And I think, What does it take to get us to wake up?
More:
Rep. Trent Franks: Blacks Better Off Under Slavery
Arizona Congressman Trent Franks told blogger Mike Stark that African Americans were much better off under slavery. Franks, the most conservative member of the Republican caucus, who has in the past called the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision "the greatest holocaust in the history of mankind," is not new to conspiracy and bigotry.Last October for example, Franks accused a prominent Muslim advocacy group of "trying to infiltrate the offices of members of Congress by placing interns in the offices." Franks, an on-again, off-again birther, has called president Obama "un-American," accused him of going "against American interests" and even called him "an enemy of humanity." His comments to Stark, as repulsive and abhorrent as they are, seem to be consistent with the reactionary mindset that some on the right hold.

re: #14 Unakite
Nifty. I like this one, from the MET office:
What are the implications of the disclosures for the integrity of scientific research?
1. The UK enjoys a reputation for strong and robust science on the international stage. In the field of climate research the Met Office is widely acknowledged as world leading.
2. Whilst it would be arrogant to assume that any system or process is perfect, the codes and processes in place to govern science research across the UK, laid down by the Government Office for Science, the UK Research Integrity Office and Research Councils UK, form a comprehensive framework within which science research is produced and debated. In addition, the Met Office also adheres fully to the Civil Service Code and operates to the highest standards of integrity and transparency.
3. All published science is subjected to a rigorous process of peer review: a well-established method by which scientific evidence and claims, and importantly the methodology behind these, are scrutinised by qualified experts in the field. Peer review also promotes and maintains open debate across the science community - crucial to further developments in science.
4. Transparency and integrity are vital components in maintaining the Met Office's, and the UK's, position at the leading edge in climate science and we have wherever possible, but dependant on IPR ownership, released the underlying land temperature component used in the HadCRUT analysis. The Met Office's sea temperature component has been widely available for some time.
How independent are the other two international data sets?
5. There is strong evidence that the globe has warmed. Three independent global temperature data sets, HadCRUT, NCDC and NASA-GISS, all clearly demonstrate the rise in global temperatures over the last 150 years. Despite the large differences in the methods used to estimate global temperature trends, these blended analyses are consistent in their view of global temperature change.
6. There are numerous studies in the peer-reviewed literature that attest to the robustness of the surface temperature records, their independence and their non-reliance on specific individual station records. Support for the reality of surface trends also comes from reanalyses and changes in ocean heat content, glaciers, humidity and a host of other indicators including phenological data. Indicators from meteorological, oceanographic and physical measurements are strongly consistent with the surface temperature records discussed above.
7. The data come from numerous different technologies and have been investigated by numerous independent groups. Where multiple datasets exist for a given parameter none fundamentally disagrees with the expected signal for a warming world. For the surface records to be wrong would require all these other analyses to be similarly wrong.
8. Annex A provides a detailed explanation of the differences between the analyses with respect to data sourcing and methodology.

The Greece fiscal problem is taking an unexpected turn to the ugly:
Greece's Debt Crisis: Blaming Nazi Germany
It's not quite World War III, but tension over Greece's debt crisis has ignited a battle of words between Athens and Berlin, reopening old wounds and raising the specter of Nazism. As Greece struggles to avoid default, and Germans debate whether to bail out their spendthrift neighbor, the question of what, if anything, Germany owes Greece for the past has become a topic of bitter debate and angry mutterings in the southern European nation.[...]
But it was Athens' oft-intemperate mayor, Nikitas Kaklamanis, who upped the ante by invoking the ghosts of Greece's war dead: "Ms Merkel, you owe us for Kalavryta, you owe us for Distomo, you owe us 70 billion ($95 billion) for the ruins you left us," he said, referring to two World War II incidents in which hundreds of Greeks were massacred in reprisal attacks by German soldiers.
[...]
The past still haunts us today.

DRINKING.
Tomorrow evening I'm going with a group of friends to a place where we will be given painting supplies, and a "lesson" which is supposed to guide us through to a finished painting.
Given that most of us have absolutely no artistic talent whatsoever, AND given that the instructions are for each of us to bring a bottle of wine for refreshment during our session, I have a really odd feeling that the finished products may not be exactly professional.

Hoops ain't here so probably no one cares but ...
After taking the Lakers a couple of nights ago, the Dallas Mavs just played an awesome game against Atlanta (111-103 in OT).
Down 15 in the 4th, Jason Kidd takes over.
This may be one of the few truly all time greats of the game. I can count them on one hand.
Some stats from tonight:
* 37 years old
* 19 points
* 16 rebounds
* 17 assistsDid I mention he is 37 years old? You know you love this. Unless you are a kid of course.
I care... I like hockey.

Have you ever had an Anthony's Pizza, they are all over town. He's from NYC and it's the first time in 20 years that I could actually get NYC styled pizza that was truly a NYC styled pizza.
A bit pricey, but very authentic. We even have one up here in the hills at 8000 thousand feet (must be harder to make the dough rise). He has about 20 shops in the Metro Denver area.
Anthony's? No. Just Pasquini's. This one was from Pudge Brothers.

Our thing is to get a Tony's cheese pizza or whatever you can get for $3-$4 and put a bag of frozen broccoli and cauliflower on top of it with some fresh basil and olive oil. It's better than a dirt cheap pizza, cheaper that Digorno and you still feel like you cooked something. Kinda.
Hey, I suggested Digiorno for mediocrity at half the price. But I like Tony's. Extra cheese, red pepper, and dinner. I like your idea, but never tried it.

They probably had an "x" at the end of their names though.
I've heard various stories as to how that came about.
1. As they arrived from Acadia, as they left the boats, they were checked off a list as a family - and to make it obvious, the family name as pluralized by putting an "x" behind it (like we would use an "s" for "the Smiths").
2. As they arrived and left the boats, the "x" was placed after the name to indicate they had gotten off the boat.
3. And, aw, hell - there's one more and I can't remember it right now.

I tried finding any kind of salsa in eastern France once. The only chili type anything on the super marche shelf was Tabasco. Had to make my own salsa, sans cilantro, couldn't find that.

re: #194 reine.de.tout
They probably had an "x" at the end of their names though.
I've heard various stories as to how that came about.
1. As they arrived from Acadia, as they left the boats, they were checked off a list as a family - and to make it obvious, the family name as pluralized by putting an "x" behind it (like we would use an "s" for "the Smiths").
2. As they arrived and left the boats, the "x" was placed after the name to indicate they had gotten off the boat.
3. And, aw, hell - there's one more and I can't remember it right now.
I think you could be right about the girl--Boudreau was x-free. He was determined to fulfill every Cajun tale, once arranged for me and a couple hundred people to be inside a 4 July fireworks display.

One day Thibodeaux went up to Boudreaux. "You know Boudreaux, I think somethin' wrong wit me."
Boudreaux said, "Mais, Thibodeaux, tell me what's your problem.?"
"Well, Boudreaux," Thibodeaux said. "My whole body is in pain. Everywhere I press on my body it hurts."
"Thibodeaux, I think I know what's wrong with you." Boudreaux replied.
"Tell me Boudreaux, what could it be?"
"Thibodeaux, you need to see the doctor because your finger's broken."
This one's for Walter:
Thibodeaux: Boudreaux, did you get the parrot I sent you for your birthday?
Boudreaux: Yes, it was good!
Thibodeaux: You ate the bird!
Boudreaux: Of Course I ate it.
Thibodeaux: That bird spoke five different languages!
Boudreaux: Then he should have said something.
Thibodeaux: Boudreaux, What's the score?
Boudreaux: Seven to Ten.
Thibodeaux: Who's winning?
Boudreaux: The ten.

"How To Simulate Being A Sailor"
1. Buy a steel dumpster, paint it gray inside and out, and live in it for six months.
2. Run all the pipes and wires in your house exposed on the walls.
3. Repaint your entire house every month.
4. Renovate your bathroom. Build a wall across the middle of the bathtub and move the shower head to chest level. When you take showers, make sure you turn off the water while you soap down.
5. Put lube oil in your humidifier and set it on high.
6. Once a week, blow compressed air (or use a leaf blower) up your chimney, making sure the wind carries the soot onto your neighbor's house. Ignore his complaints.
7. Once a month, take all major appliances apart and then reassemble them.
8. Raise the thresholds and lower the headers of your front and back doors so that you either trip or bang your head every time you pass through them.
9. Disassemble and inspect your lawnmower every week.
10. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, turn your water heater temperature up to 200 degrees. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, turn the water heater off. On Saturdays and Sundays tell your family they use too much water during the week, so no bathing will be allowed.
11. Raise your bed to within 6 inches of the ceiling, so you can't turn over without getting out and then getting back in.
12. Sleep on the shelf in your closet. Replace the closet door with a curtain. Have your spouse whip open the curtain about 3 hours after you go to sleep, shine a flashlight in your eyes, and say "Sorry, wrong rack."
13. Make your family qualify to operate each appliance in your house - dishwasher operator, blender technician, etc. Re-qualify every 6 months.
14. Have your neighbor come over each day at 0500, blow a whistle so loud Helen Keller could hear it, and shout "Reveille, reveille, all hands heave out and trice up."
15. Have your mother-in-law write down everything she's going to do the following day, then have her make you stand in your back yard at 0600 while she reads it to you.
16. Submit a request chit to your father-in-law requesting permission to leave your house before 1500.
17. Empty all the garbage bins in your house and sweep the driveway three times a day, whether it needs it or not. Have someone repeat loudly, "Now sweepers, sweepers, man your brooms, give the ship a clean sweep down fore and aft, empty all ****cans and butt kits over the fantail!"
18. Have your neighbor collect all your mail for a month, read your magazines, and randomly lose every 5th item before delivering it to you.
19. Watch no TV except for movies played in the middle of the night. Have your family vote on which movie to watch, then show a different one. Repeat the same movie several nights in a row.
20. When your children are in bed, run into their room with a megaphone shouting that your home is under attack and ordering them to their battle stations, shouting, "Now general quarters, general quarters, all hands man your battle stations!"
21. Make your family menu a week ahead of time without consulting the pantry or refrigerator.
22. Post a menu on the kitchen door informing your family that they are having steak for dinner. Then make them wait in line for an hour. When you finally get to the kitchen, tell them you are out of steak, but they can have dried ham or hot dogs. Repeat daily until they ignore the menu and just ask for hot dogs.
23. Bake a cake. Prop up one side of the pan so the cake bakes unevenly. Spread icing real thick to level it off.
24. Get up every night around midnight and have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on stale bread. (Call this "Midrats".)
25. Set your alarm clock to go off at random during the night. At the alarm, jump up and dress as fast as you can, making sure to button your top shirt button and tuck your pants into your socks. Run out into the backyard and uncoil the garden hose.
26. Every week or so, throw your cat or dog in the pool and shout "Man overboard port side!" Rate your family members on how quickly they respond.

"How To Simulate Being A Sailor" Pt 2
27. Put the headphones from your stereo on your head, but don't plug them in. Hang a paper cup around your neck on a string. Stand in front of the stove, and speak into the paper cup "Stove manned and ready." After an hour or so, speak into the cup again "Stove secured." Roll up the headphones and paper cup and stow them in a shoebox.
28. Make your family turn out all the lights and go to bed at 2200, saying, "Now taps, taps! Lights out! Maintain silence throughout the ship!" Then immediately have an 18-wheeler crash into your house (for the benefit of aircraft carrier sailors).
29. Build a fire in a trash can in your garage. Loudly announce to your family, "This is a drill! This is a drill! Fire in hangar bay one!"
30. Place a podium at the end of your driveway. Have your family stand watches at the podium, rotating at 4 hour intervals. This is best done when the weather is worst. January is a good time.
31. When there is a thunderstorm in your area, get a wobbly rocking chair, sit in it and rock as hard as you can until you become nauseated. Make sure to have a supply of stale crackers in your shirt pocket. ALT: Find the biggest horse you can, put a 2-inch mattress on his back, and strap yourself to it. Turn him loose in a barn filled with snakes for six hours and try to sleep. Then get up and go to work.
32. For former engineers: bring your lawn mower into the living room and run it all day long.
33. Make coffee using eighteen scoops of budget priced coffee grounds per pot; let the pot simmer for 5 hours before drinking.
34. Have someone under the age of ten give you a haircut with sheep shears.
35. Sew the back pockets of your jeans on the front.
36. Add 1/3 cup diesel fuel to the laundry.
37. Take hourly readings on your electric and water meters.
38. Every couple of weeks, dress up in your best clothes and go to the scummiest part of town. Find the most run down, trashiest bar, and drink beer until you are hammered. Then walk all the way home.
39. Lock yourself and your family in the house for six weeks. Tell them that at the end of the 6th week you are going to take them to Disney World for "liberty." At the end of the 6th week, inform them the trip to Disney World has been canceled because they need to get ready for an inspection, and it will be another week before they can leave the house.
40. Hire someone to hammer on a 55-gal drum at random hours to simulate paint chipping.

Casu marzu is considered toxic when the maggots in the cheese have died. Because of this, only cheese in which the maggots are still alive is eaten. When the cheese has fermented enough, it is cut into thin strips and spread on moistened Sardinian flatbread (pane carasau), to be served with a strong red wine.[6][7]
Casu marzu is believed to be an aphrodisiac by local Sardinians.[2] Because the larvae in the cheese can launch themselves for distances up to 15 centimetres (6 in) when disturbed,[1][8] diners hold their hands above the sandwich to prevent the maggots from leaping into their eyes.[4]
Those who do not wish to eat live maggots place the cheese in a sealed paper bag. The maggots, starved for oxygen, writhe and jump in the bag, creating a "pitter-patter" sound. When the sounds subside, the maggots are dead and the cheese can be eaten.[9]

Stan
by Walter L. Newton
(When the curtain opens or the lights come up, we see Stan. He is dressed in grey pants and a grey shirt)
That’s my kid out there. Look at him… watch that pitch. Major league material. He’s 16 years old. He’s been playing baseball since he was eight. I’ve been with him right from the beginning. Driving him to this ball field, to that ball field. I worked overtime to pay for his equipment. He has a drivers license now. He can drive me to the games. It’s a beginners license, so I still have to be in the car.
Look at the coach… bastard… I didn’t mean that. But he pisses me off sometimes. He’s got a problem with winning. He says my kids too competitive. He says being part of a
team is more important than winning.
Where did he come up with that crap. I’ll tell you, my kid knows about winning. I taught him. You see that SUV over there, look at his uniform, those shoes of his cost me more than a plane ticket to New York.
That’s because I’m a winner. That’s because I learned how to lead the team, not get lost in the second string.
Now look at that shit. The coach is taking him out of the game just to give another kid a chance to pitch. My kid hasn’t given up a run in three innings and has struck out four batters. Why don’t we just tuck our tails between our legs and become women?
I don’t care… much. But what is this doing to the kids. Makes them fell worthless. That’s how they treated me when I was young. I was a little fat kid then. We’d play dodge ball and the other team would make sure I was the last one left in the game. Then they would grab all the extra basketballs and pelt me good.
Fucking gym teacher would just stand there… laughing. I would go home and tell dad what happened… and he’d punch me in the face. Then he would dare me to punch him back. He said he was teaching me a lesson. “Fight back you little pansy… don’t let them get the best of you.”
Shit… two runs in six pitches. Where the fuck is the coach? Is he even watching this?
No… I didn’t punch him back… never. I was chicken shit at the time. And that wasn’t the only time he punched me. If I got an “f” on a test, when I failed my Boy Scout exam, if I wimped out on a date…
Bam… bam… bam… “That’ll teach you a lesson.”
I’m not going to let my kid get treated like I was. I told him about my dad… how he was. I told my kid that if I ever smacked him it was because I loved him. “Kid… you’re going to be a winner and don’t you ever let any motherfucker tell you otherwise.”
Oh god… I have to watch my language around here. I may accidentally insult someone. One day the coach told me… “Hey Stan… cool it… some of these parents don’t want to hear that shit.”
So what is all this non-competitive sports stuff all about? Why do we teach them how to play the game if we stop short of teaching them about winning. It’s for their self-esteem… they say. Bullshit… nobody in life is going to give you jack for your self-esteem. I didn’t get an office with a window-view because of any self-esteem. I didn’t get a company car and a expense account because I felt all warm and cuddly about myself. I got what I got because I fought for it.
My kid hooked into all of this “I’m Okay, You’re Ok” crap. Once… get a load of this… once he went to the coach and asked him to pull him from the game so some other weasel-assed kid could have a chance to pitch. My kid will never forget the lesson I taught him that night. But you know I love him… he’s still on my side.

There we go… now we’re six runs behind. That’s the fucking game.
You know that I am right. You may not want to admit it… but deep down inside… you think just like I do. Do you know what your problem is? You’re afraid. You’re afraid to get off of your couches and let them know that this is all a bunch of crap.
I didn’t put up with any of that. I got the hell out. I left home when I was eighteen. Do you know how I discovered how to be a winner? In a carnival. Yea… really. I traveled with a carnival for two years. I worked a game… a game you couldn’t win. And I won… every night, day after day… 14 hours… from noon to 2:00am. It wasn’t luck… it wasn’t self-esteem… it was a down-right con. But I learned a lesson. You either fight to be a winner or you drown. Simple as that.
Life is a pretense. You can spend your time looking up at the shit that keeps falling down in your face or you can dig yourself out of that pit and start shitting on the ones you left behind.
Ok… now eight runs to two… that asshole coach just lost the game. He should have left my kid on the mound… but no… we have to work on Marty’s self-esteem, or we have to consider the other kids… or the parents will get mad if their kids don’t get a chance to play. You want your kids to play… then teach them how to be winners.
I never punched my dad… I was scared. I had the opportunity… more than once. At the time I didn’t realize what he was trying to teach me. What he was saying to me. He died when I was twenty years old… well… not right away. He had aortal aneurism. It busted and he filled up with blood. Like a… basketball. The doctors told me there was only a one percent chance that he would even survive the night.
Yea… he was a winner… he survived the night. And the next day… there he was… lying on the bed in ICU… all this stuff hooked up to him. His vital organs were working all right. But his head… I mean… his brain… it was damaged.
The doctor said to me “Stan… we can keep him alive for… well.. forever like this… but there is no chance that he will ever be anything but a vegetable.” Mom was already dead… I was the only living family member left. It was my decision.
The only thing I ever wanted to do in my life was to PUNCH MY DAD IN THE FACE. One good punch… right smack on… center.
But he won… he was a winner. Right to the end he held all the cards. But he gave me the final chance to be a winner. I pulled the plug on him. The docs turned off all the machines. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t what I expected.

Sneaky critters, think everything belongs to them.
The Roi once was eating a piece of chicken while watching TV, and he had picked it up in his hands to take a bite.
When he looked down, the dog, who was sitting in his lap at the time, had reached UP and was taking a bite out of the other end of the chicken piece.
EW!

(continued)
So what does this have to do with my kid? I think he’s given in. I mean given in to all this tree-hugger shit.
He tells me “Hey dad… don’t worry… the coach is just trying to give the other kids a chance.” A chance at what? A chance to loose?
And his mother? My wife… shit… a good women… but she would side with the kid in an instance. “Stan… he’s just trying to be team member. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
No… there’s nothing wrong with that… not if you want to spend the rest of your life in line with the losers.
Forget the game. Look at them… there’s no way they are going to win that game.
It’s the coach… he’s poisoned their minds. Filled it will all that P.C. stuff. I ran into the coach one night, in a bar. I went up to him and told him… straight out… “My kid is good… my kid can make your team a winner… you know that you stupid son-of-a-bitch. Let him pitch. I’m getting tired of dragging him to your games, just to see him sit on the bench… twiddling his thumbs… while your fat-assed lazy under-achievers prance around the field like a bunch of ballet dancers.”
He got the message. The school called me and warned me that if I ever pulled a stunt like that again, that my kid would be dropped from the team.
My kid even came to me, crying… crying is eyes out. He told me I embarrassed him… that all the kids at school were making fun of him. His daddy is crazy. And the kid agreed with them. He blamed me. He wanted me to stay out of his business.
It was MY business. He is MY son. I haven’t signed any papers giving that school the right to raise my kid. I brought him into this world… and…
Ok… now they put him back into the game. See that… now that their ass is in a hole, they’re going to dump all the responsibility on his back.
Have you ever thought about killing someone? It seems strange at first. You can’t quite figure out why you would think of such a thing. It isn’t in your nature… that’s what you tell yourself. You forget about it for a while… but it comes back. You already know that you could do it… but you keep telling yourself it’s just some sort of fantasy.
But then it becomes sort of a mind-game. If you really wanted to do it… how would you… where would you… when would you? You start to work out the details. You pass by the baseball field, looking over the place. You mentally check out the places where no one would see you, the bathrooms, underneath the bleachers, maybe in that clump of trees behind the outfield. You think about the time of day… afternoon after a game… a private meeting… maybe in front of everyone?
What kind of weapon? Everyone knows how to shoot a gun, even if you have never done it. Guns are easy to get, you may have a few in your house. Just for protection… that’s what you said when you bought it. To protect the little lady and the kids.
At some point you put the gun in the car with you. Hell… the crime rate has gone up in the neighborhood… maybe it would be a good idea to keep a little protection nearby. You’d never use it, but it makes you feel better.
Do you remember that day? Did you read about it in the papers? It was one of those things. The wife didn’t wake me up on time… so I raced out of the house with the kid and barely made it to the game before it started. The kid was supposed to open the game, but the coach benched him for being late.
The game was a disaster. They lost… 13 to zero. I was never so mad at the coach as I was on that day. And I let him know it. Every inning… every error… I let him know it… loud enough so everyone could hear me. I let him know what a dumb-assed excuse he was for a coach.

At the end of the game… I headed for my car. I was raging… I didn’t even know where the kid was. I just wanted to get out of there. I got into my car and put the keys in the ignition. And then suddenly I have this nut-case pounding on my window. He was screaming at me through the closed window. I was going to just drive away… but he was punching at the window and it shattered.
I got out of the car. There were glass fragments all over me. My face was bleeding. I didn’t even realize that I had grab the pistol from under my seat. I stood there in front of him and he kept ranting and shouting at me. I raised my right hand and pointed the gun right at his chest. One squeeze of the trigger and silence.
Right at that point my kid runs up to the car and sees the coach lying on the ground. And would you believe it… the kid yells at me… “Leave him alone… leave him alone.”
I looked at him.. and it was like a movie running at fast speed… but only I could see what was happening. His head turned into a basketball and then into my fathers face, and then into the kids… mocking me “Hey fat boy… suck this.” And it kept replaying… faster and faster… yet slower and slower in my mind.
And the basketballs kept coming at me… I had to stop them. I held the gun straight out… waiting for a basketball. Then… boom.
I stopped them. Those shitty little bastards. I stopped the basketballs. I won.
(He sits on the stage floor, crying, mumbling, with his back to the audience. We see on the back of his shirt the words “State Mental Hospital.”)
He betrayed me. My own flesh and blood betrayed me.
(He turns around facing the audience, still sitting)
The doctors let me watch these video tapes of my kids baseball games. The say it helps in my therapy.
You know what they are really trying to do? Make me conform. I’m an outsider you know… I don’t fit in anymore. Society doesn’t respect winners. If you get to the point where there isn’t any right and wrong… where values are relative… then you got to get rid of us who see life as black and white. We get in the way. We confuse the program.
They tell us we can’t judge the sins of the past. They tells us Hitler was right… with in his relative assessment of his times. We have to be sensitive to the realities of others… even if they seem to go against the thousands of years of moral advancement.
They forget about the winners. The forget about the past. Everything is about the moment.. and they keep moving the target.
They fool themselves. At some point the target stops moving. And thank God … there will always be someone like me.
(As if answering a unheard question)
Same time next week? Sure. I’ll be here.

Heh - long story short. 6 of us (IBM Field Engineers) had a Choy Lee Offshore 40 built in Hong Kong back in the 60s. We planned on sailing bak to the US after our tours were over in SEA and Nam. On its maiden trip from HK to Saigon the rudder fell off (we found out later the @ss holes in the shipyard dropped it and put it on anyway) while we were well up off NVietnam. All we could do was tack back and forth - 200 miles of E & W tacking yielded ~50 miles of southern gain. When off Da Nang we shot off flares to no avail. Finally a Navy patrol boat came out. How come you guys didn't fly your Ensign up side down? The SeaBees there built us a new rudder.

Maybe I simplified it too much. The 5 monologues deal with death, how easy it is for us, anyone, the guy, girl next door to rationalize about taking a human life, how easy it can be to talk yourself into it, for religious reasons, to support your obsession with sports, for love or lack of love.
The 5 monologues are titled "On Any Given Day... why we kill." It's not just about dying... it's about avenging, sweet.

re: #317 The Shadow Do
I work all day, and get half drunk at night.
Waking at four to soundless dark, I stare.
In time the curtain edges will grow light.
Till then I see what's really always there:
Unresting death, a whole day nearer now,
Making all thought impossible but how
And where and when I shall myself die.
Arid interrogation: yet the dread
Of dying, and being dead,
Flashes afresh to hold and horrify.
The mind blanks at the glare. Not in remorse
- The good not used, the love not given, time
Torn off unused - nor wretchedly because
An only life can take so long to climb
Clear of its wrong beginnings, and may never:
But at the total emptiness forever,
The sure extinction that we travel to
And shall be lost in always. Not to be here,
Not to be anywhere,
And soon; nothing more terrible, nothing more true.
This is a special way of being afraid
No trick dispels. Religion used to try,
That vast moth-eaten musical brocade
Created to pretend we never die,
And specious stuff that says no rational being
Can fear a thing it cannot feel, not seeing
that this is what we fear - no sight, no sound,
No touch or taste or smell, nothing to think with,
Nothing to love or link with,
The anaesthetic from which none come round.
And so it stays just on the edge of vision,
A small unfocused blur, a standing chill
That slows each impulse down to indecision
Most things may never happen: this one will,
And realisation of it rages out
In furnace fear when we are caught without
People or drink. Courage is no good:
It means not scaring others. Being brave
Lets no-one off the grave.
Death is no different whined at than withstood.
Slowly light strengthens, and the room takes shape.
It stands plain as a wardrobe, what we know,
Have always known, know that we can't escape
Yet can't accept. One side will have to go.
Meanwhile telephones crouch, getting ready to ring
In locked-up offices, and all the uncaring
Intricate rented world begins to rouse.
The sky is white as clay, with no sun.
Work has to be done.
Postmen like doctors go from house to house.

We got Choy Lee to ship us a new rudder (they paid for it) so we now had a spare. We needed it because it fell off again. (we found out later that the idiots damaged the mounting post when forcing on the original dropped rudder during construction). Now, I love Asians - hell I was married to one. However some Chinese are to be watched closely if any sum of money is involved. I think they would rip off their mothers given the chance. Then again there are others who I would damn near die for.

Bad for the kidneys too, from what I've heard.

I'm beginning to think the reason cats vomit so much is that their food basically sucks.
Well, it does cling to the dish quite firmly. I sometimes feed my parents cats, and its always tough to clean their dishes.

My sister's cats are like that because she leaves a mountain of dry food out for them all the time. Obese and with some kidney trouble.
One of them looks like a barrel with a piece of string taped to one end.
(Very sturdy cat, very skinny and stubby white tail).

Has this series been brought to the stage yet? Because its very good.
Nope. It's what's called a one act play. The five monologues, about an hour and ten minutes worth of theatre. The stories have not even been edited for mistakes (evident by Debs two corrections).
I Never Promised You A Rose Garden, High Crimes and Misdemeanors, Poof! and 1894 has had major staged productions in the Denver area and out of state.
Appearances and A Field of Buttercups have won the Colorado Theatre Guilds New Ventures Award and received staged readings.
And I have had a number of short scene pieces staged at numerous theatre festivals.
I have other finished or half finished pieces in the "in" basket.

That's what my sister did. They would still wake her yowling at 5 am too for-- fresher dry food? Not sure.
They did live a long time though-- one made it to 16 and the other is 18 now. But they've had kidney trouble and the 18 year old one has always had a pee problem-- although in her case it was spite. Left alone for too long and she'd pee on furniture. Definitely deliberate.

Character classes include:
In Scandinavian folklore, a Troll is a mythical, dwarfish creature who lives in caves, hoards gold and smashes skulls with clubs. In Internet folklore, a Troll is a dickhole who purposely disrupts online forums by posting inflammatory, off-topic or otherwise scatological content. The more upset you become, the more this jackass gets his jollies.
The Troll’s limited (but seemingly unlimited!) secondary attribute is Douchebaggery. This can be replenished with an unhealthy or even — God willing — lethal combination of testosterone supplements, paint thinner and Norwegian grind metal.
The Hacker:
The Hacker takes advantage of the average web-schmuck’s lack of security measures and brutally exploits using complex technologies like backdoors, rootkits, masks and sniffers. Successfully launching a brute force attack into a protected network is the closest this über-dork will ever come to having vaginal sex.The Hacker needs badass hardware with plenty of Processing Power to execute his deadly deeds. A small price to pay for having such l33t motherfucking skillz.
The CamWhore:
The Camwhore is an extreme narcissist who requires constant ego validation. She’s the girl who was called “pretty” one too many times as a kid, and now needs to reinforce her self-worth anytime something with a lens — webcams, human eyes, small municipalities in the Swiss canton of Valais (pop. 3,470) — is aimed at her overly made-up face. With her secondary Sexiness attribute, the Camwhore derails forums with post after post of pouty, doe-eyed stares and exaggerated cleavage. And if she’s really feeling frisky, she can get your ass arrested on kiddie-porn charges.
And the EmoKid:
The Emo Kid is exactly who you’d expect: a whiny little bitch who takes over forums by making everyone so miserable they’re compelled to leave. Suffering from perpetual teen angst, the Emo Kid turns otherwise agreeable forums into dumping grounds for her depressing rants, false-alarm suicide notes and side-splittingly morbid poetry. The Emo Kid’s lifeblood, fueling her anguished existence, is a steady flow of Tears. These are easily replenished with eyedrops, eye irritants, or just a good old-fashioned flogging.
I think EmoKid might be the one for me...

Home is so sad. It stays as it was left,
Shaped to the comfort of the last to go
As if to win them back. Instead, bereft
Of anyone to please, it withers so,
Having no heart to put aside the theft
And turn again to what it started as,
A joyous shot at how things ought to be,
Long fallen wide. You can see how it was:
Look at the pictures and the cutlery.

No. By that time I was used to surprises. In the beginning I was so ignorant that people had to explain to me, "this dish is special, only for festive occasions, because you're here."
One of my friends worked a couple of years in Shanghai. She stopped asking what food was when she was out with coworkers, because the answer was always "Local speciality!"
The phrase she used to describe the food in Shanghai in general was "Trayfedik-o-rama".

That's a bit dark. I can't do the angst stuff anymore. Those "death" monologues I have been posting and discussing, that stuff was written about 5 years ago, when I was still drinking like a sailor and enjoyed being pissed at everything.
For a matter of fact, ever since I stopped drinking 4 years ago, I can't write the heavy drama anymore, period. There was about a two year period after the drink 2007-8, where I had some of that stuff still in me, and that's when I wrote Appearances about pedophilia, but now, I'm really dry, really in touch with, well, reality, and most of what I put together right now is more clinical, clean, funny stuff a lot, but I can't get back down into the "soul" and beat myself up a bit for the sake of some good drama.

Ugh - one of the top nightmare medical examination scenarios that one. Btw - something funny about the procedure they put you through for the bladder stones in hospital - they give you some radioactive drink or something before they x-ray your bladder. Thing is, a minute or two after drinking it, as you are lying there, you have this feeling that you have just shit yourself. The nurse of course waited till after I'd had that before saying "Oh btw - you probably felt that you just shit yourself there - am I right? don't worry - it does that".

Some friends of ours went through a period of time when they had both a beagle puppy and a whippet. You really need to leave food out all the time for whippets. They are natural anorexics, and if you don't have the food there at the exact moment they figure eating something might be a good idea, they may not want to eat when you put the food out again.
Beagles will eat everything, and if there's more, they'll eat that too.
They finally had to put the whippet's bowl at a level that the whippet could reach, and the beagle could not.

You know, I write plays, and I attempted to write a one man play on Hunter once, hell, his wife lives up in the hills here just a few hours away.
I went through a lot of material including his wife's short biography and when all was said an done, I really couldn't find a coherent thread in which to tie an hour and a half of theatre together with.
I'm not saying it couldn't be done, but, gee, what did he really have to say about anything that you could take to the bank.
After a while, I got the impression he was goofing on everyone, all the time, and really didn't have anything to say except "fuck you all." Doesn't make for good theatre.

At the risk of un-cool-ing the thread...
After a couple of weeks playing phone tag, Unfair Park finally managed to connect with George M. Clayton, the District 12 State Board of Education candidate opposing incumbent Geraldine "Tincy" Miller in Tuesday's GOP primary. Clayton has been something of a mystery man to the Republican Party folk and state board watchers we've spoken with, and we wanted to ask him why he's running. [...]Unfair Park tried to pin Clayton down on where he stood on the GOP conservative spectrum -- using a form of reportorial shorthand. We asked him how old the Earth is, figuring anything in the 10,000-year range would peg him as a religious conservative.
"I'm not going to cut it half and count the rings," Clayton replied cannily.
OK, slippery answer. (Also wrong, but never mind.) We tried again: Should evolution be taught in science classrooms?
Clayton said evolution is and should remain in science classrooms, but he thinks the alternative theories supported by the religious right -- intelligent design and creationism -- can "find a real nice home" in humanities, philosophy or world history classes.
"It's seems to me you can't be taught the one [evolution] without the other [creationism]," Clayton said. "It's an impossibility to talk about evolution without mentioning creationism."
[...]

Strange thing is, I agree. My brother is the same way. His motto is: "the world's about to end and I'm a happy camper" I don't share that view, but I do understand what drives it. It's very dark.
I understand. Been there, done that, actually really fun, if you thrive on chaos, it's like a drug. I actually enjoy the fact that I went through that stuff, and made it out the other end.
I'm on to other things now.

Read Kingsley Amis' Memoirs for a lot of anecdotes about Larkin.
As for his darkest poem, this one's a top-fiver:
Next, Please
Always too eager for the future, we
Pick up bad habits of expectancy.
Something is always approaching; every day
Till then we say,
Watching from a bluff the tiny, clear
Sparkling armada of promises draw near.
How slow they are! And how much time they waste,
Refusing to make haste!
Yet still they leave us holding wretched stalks
Of disappointment, for, though nothing balks
Each big approach, leaning with brasswork prinked,
Each rope distinct,
Flagged, and the figurehead wit golden tits
Arching our way, it never anchors; it's
No sooner present than it turns to past.
Right to the last
We think each one will heave to and unload
All good into our lives, all we are owed
For waiting so devoutly and so long.
But we are wrong:
Only one ship is seeking us, a black-
Sailed unfamiliar, towing at her back
A huge and birdless silence. In her wake
No waters breed or break.

Great, great band!
If you haven't introduced yourself to Crowded House yet... boy, are you in for a treat. ALL their records are stellar, and there are very few bands of which you can say that.
And yes... unfortunately, Paul is dead. Drummer Paul Hester, that is. After struggling with depression for years, he took his own life in 2005, and his absence haunts the lyrics of Time On Earth.

Larkin always reminds me of Morrissey.
"Two lovers entwined pass me by, and heaven knows I'm miserable now". Morrissey is more humorous, of course.
Excellent comparison. But Larkin can be hella funny, and Morrissey can be damned bleak himself...

BTW, I finally watched the movie "Creation". Sort of slow and awkward as far as storytelling, with acting that was better than the story-line itself deserved. Some beautiful cinematography in parts.
It falls unfortunately in a category of films that is hard to fit into the traditional American movie-going experience. Half documentary, half drama, it won't satisfy those who want 100% of either.
Good idea though.

Just in what jaws you were to suppurate:
You may have thought things would come right again
If you could only keep quite still and wait.
Don't know that one. I do know this, though:
Aubade
I work all day, and get half drunk at night.
Waking at four to soundless dark, I stare.
In time the curtain edges will grow light.
Till then I see what's really always there:
Unresting death, a whole day nearer now,
Making all thought impossible but how
And where and when I shall myself die.
Arid interrogation: yet the dread
Of dying, and being dead,
Flashes afresh to hold and horrify.
The mind blanks at the glare. Not in remorse
- The good not used, the love not given, time
Torn off unused - nor wretchedly because
An only life can take so long to climb
Clear of its wrong beginnings, and may never:
But at the total emptiness forever,
The sure extinction that we travel to
And shall be lost in always. Not to be here,
Not to be anywhere,
And soon; nothing more terrible, nothing more true.
This is a special way of being afraid
No trick dispels. Religion used to try,
That vast moth-eaten musical brocade
Created to pretend we never die,
And specious stuff that says no rational being
Can fear a thing it cannot feel, not seeing
that this is what we fear - no sight, no sound,
No touch or taste or smell, nothing to think with,
Nothing to love or link with,
The anaesthetic from which none come round.
And so it stays just on the edge of vision,
A small unfocused blur, a standing chill
That slows each impulse down to indecision
Most things may never happen: this one will,
And realisation of it rages out
In furnace fear when we are caught without
People or drink. Courage is no good:
It means not scaring others. Being brave
Lets no-one off the grave.
Death is no different whined at than withstood.
Slowly light strengthens, and the room takes shape.
It stands plain as a wardrobe, what we know,
Have always known, know that we can't escape
Yet can't accept. One side will have to go.
Meanwhile telephones crouch, getting ready to ring
In locked-up offices, and all the uncaring
Intricate rented world begins to rouse.
The sky is white as clay, with no sun.
Work has to be done.
Postmen like doctors go from house to house.
****
Glad I never ran into Larkin when I was a mopey, tragic adolescent.

Wow, there's a blast from the past
Not the use of Ms., surely?
On the other hand, speaking of blasts from the past, this was probably already mentioned: minor kerfuffle earlier today over Carly Simon and You're So Vain
According to an interpretation of a clip of a remastered version of "You're So Vain," Carly Simon named David Geffen as the target of the song. When the song is played backwards, at least as heard in the clip, a voice whispers "David."
Geffen was the head of Simon's record label at the time, and was supposedly paying more attention to Joni Mitchell.
That would mean it is not about exes Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Warren Beatty, Mick Jagger or Kris Kristofferson.
UPDATE:
Maybe not. While Simon does whisper "David" backwards, as reported below, she supposedly also whispers the name "Warren" backwards elsewhere on the same album redo. Also, Simon reportedly wasn't mad at Geffen until two years after "You're so Vain" was recorded.
Teach the controversy!

Know when to walk away and know when to run

Knowing what to throw away and knowing what to keep
'Cos every post's a winner and every post's a loser
And the best that you can hope for is dyin' in your sleep

True, but "fuck you all" is what film festivals are made of.

It's the same reason I keep watching Lost, and yes I know you like Lost. So do I, it's a broadcast donkey punch straight to the reasoning center of the brain. I love Lost because it's exactly like Hunter; crazy, addictive, wild, strange, while also being a stumbling heap of poorly cobbled together what the fuck all at the same time.
It's not that there's nothing else on, but nothing that approximates the first few nanoseconds of your brain beginning to process this image on an ongoing basis, with few if any meaningful answers as to what anything really means.

Tanglefoot is a beer, brewed around Salisbury--it's like Tequila or Windowpane. Crazy and yet subtle. Saw Claus and Ultarvox in 79, and Wide Boys was the U. song I liked. Claus was just tiny and fun to look at.
Re Tanglefoot: Thank christ for that! I was really in a sweat there - here's why :

Rick "Goodhair" Perry just put up a parody on his site about Kay Bailey (the other cheerleader) Hutchinson set to the tune of Abba's "Dancing Queen" reworked as "Earmark Queen". He's blaming her for every goofy earmark in every budget she has voted for since 1994. Not *her* pork, mind you, but anything in any budget since 1994. Silly, of course, but it will play very well to the great unwashed in Texas.

Twice. European Tanker task Force out RAF Mildenhall in the early 80's. Had to use dedicated airplanes (Q models) that had separate tanks for the Habus and the 135's. They had a fuel blended with boron compounds that allowed them to do the voodoo that they did do so well. Most of their dedicated tankers were based out of Beale AFB, in Marysville, CA. But when we were in Europe, different crews got to fly different missions. Kinda cool.

The first time I ever heard AC/DC-- and liked it-- I was 15 and a slightly older female friend (20's) took me to a male strip club.

Not at all. Male strip clubs are very different from female ones. We sat in the back and I was primarily horrified by all these (quite unattractive) housewives up front losing their shit, so to speak. (This was in the 'burbs).

No, i exaggerated slightly for comic effect-- I have Blood on the Tracks of course, but in general Dylan kinda left me cold. I didn't even start liking that until I was in my 20's and I hardly know anything apart from that album.

I think your connection to Dylan, sadly, depends on your age and, to an extent your need to project. From what I have read, Dylan wanted to be hip, famous to an extent that I kinda feel all his stuff is contrived. Plus, I think the guy is a rather large misogynist. I do think some of his stuff is brilliant, but not sincere. It's not like the Metallica documentary where these idiots are sitting around with a rhyming dicitionary, but, well, I want to believe in Blood onthe Tracks.

Yeah, me too.
Also-- how interesting. I never got into Dylan partly because he did seem very misogynist to me. Just the songs, I don't even know anything about his life.
I guess i first heard some of his music when I was a teenager and I filed it all away under Jack Kerouac. Another person I was told was so great but who just seemed like a misogynist to me.
On the Road was such a disappointment. I was a teenager and kinda on the road when I read it, and the whole role of women in it was to get pregnant, keep the guys from being on the road, and cry "Dean, come back!"
Kinda soured me on it. Dylan always hit the same note for me, so to speak, back then.

Ms. Weasel/Mrs.Jimmah put's info out there, links, clips, and then just gets a bunch of toad-like croaks, "liberal", "there she goes again..." If people take issue with a post, especially if is linked, come back with something that refutes it other than some wish for a Goldwater never, never, ever land. People didnt want it in 64, get over it.
Well it's a lot better than it was six months ago as far as a welcoming environment for us evil libs. Charles' unwillingness to play ball with the standard right side talking points has also helped as a very large mass of the most hostile have flounced or fallen away.
There is still a core around here who aren't interested in discussion or debate. I like to think of them as traffic cones, you just drive around em and no one cares if you run over one every once in a while.
Anyway as long as JimIceAlot and gang are around here it just gets better and better. If you can add to the mix it would be most welcome as it just tips the scales that much more.

I meant to say, Why did Dylan strike you as misogynist? I'm really interested because that was my feeling back then, my instinctive feeling, but I don't think I've ever talked to anyone who agreed before.

I didn't really know of his misogynistic tendencies but that's probably because don't enjoy the sound of a bullfrog trying to sing after a carton of cigarettes so I never really heard much of his stuff. ;)

I love the traffic cone analogy.
Especially as in my bad young years I often drove over them and at least once pulled over in a very dangerous place to load one into my car.
You've been doing some great work btw. WindupBird and windsagio and Obdicut too.

For example, in 20 years people will hate Thom Yorke's vocals, i bet. If they don't already.

The no drugs required, is a nod to my total boredom with the Grateful Dead. I am of the age where I was supposed to really like the GD. I thought, and still to, that they are cripplingly boring...unless your are smoking p.o.t and I only know this, cause once I did, and I thought, NOW I GET IT. But, then I stopped eating and realized no one around me knew how to play an instrument, so enough with the fake mastery and shit.

Radiohead, What's up? Free downloading of new albums, can't post videos?
Some Streets for locker:

That is one of the funniest things I've ever seen posted here. And true!
Yeah, Grateful Dead-- forget it.

I have a good friend who's a "Dead" guy. He also likes all those other related types of bands... Fish, String Cheese Incident... etc. Personally, in the Classic Rock type of genre I'm a Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones kind of guy. Besides I can not tolerate the smell of Patchouli.. no forking way.

BTW, I'll also say now that I hate Led Zep.
Yeah, bring on the downdings bitches, I can take it. There are no drugs that can make that shit good.
Stuff the rhetoric about the guitar blah blah.

If you are in or around Belmar, The Oven or Virgilio's are both good. The Oven is a bit higher end and owned by Mark Tarbell, a Phoenix Chef. Virgilio's is a family place.

Finally, someone else who doesn't get it. Led Zepplin sucks ass. Can't stand Pink Floyd either.
