I wouldn’t be surprised to see the conservative blogs talking about government oppression, forced evacuations, FEMA and rounding people up. At the very least they’ll complain about whatever response to whatever happens.

1. FEMA is Krispy Kreme donuts with cocaine sprinkles for conspiracy theorists. Even the (good) X Files movie used it.
2. Center-right and center-left people just don’t make big blogs. David Brooks or George Will cannot be troubled to do more than write the occasional column. They (we?) chat, but they don’t go to the trouble of creating something like LGF. Charles is the rare exception. Mostly, if you want to go to all the trouble, you’re likely some kind of revolutionary zealot nut, imho. I wonder if even Charles himself may feel like he’s got a tiger by the tail sometimes.

*sigh*
Hmm. It’ll be interesting to see how that stance plays in Florida. For many, myself included, the Schiavo fiasco was a real turning point, marking a parting of the ways with the religious right over intrusion into private affairs. And there are a hell of a lot of people who don’t want to find themselves hooked up to life support systems against their wishes. Particularly in Florida.
Claiming that others needed to take an even “tougher” position in support of Schiavo’s parents and Tom DeLay doesn’t strike me as a statement that’s going to play well among retirees, or others who feel the government needs to butt out of their personal matters.

We can have too much democracy. If the parties chose candidates in smoke filled back rooms instead of primaries where we let in all the busybodies and little Napoleons from neighborhood associations who have the spare time to volunteer, we’d have less of this Shiavo and Nirther bullcorn. Giuliani would have a shot at being president too.

1. It’s all a matter of degree. Being a republic means, in theory, you are ruled over by elected representatives to minimize the tyranny of the majority.
2. I dig how the Catholics choose their popes, though I am on a competing team, so maybe I dig the history and tradition, or maybe I want my enemies in a weakened state. Still my religion does not possess the cunning and patience of the secret Jewish cabal who maneuvered a family of lizard people into Buckingham Palace. (kidding!) (or am I?)

Yes.. said the same thing in #103. Decommissioned, more like “moved.”
Correct. Most of the work has been transferred to, I believe, Utah, although Area 51 itself remains closed.
They have an enormously long runway there, with an even more enormous runoff area, something like five miles in total length. Whatever was landing there was coming down fast. It’s probably kept as backup, much as Edwards AFB serves as backup for shuttle landings that can’t make KSC for some reason.
Sidenote: turns out the EAFB is the largest single user of renewable energy in the nation, with over 60% of it’s supply coming from renewable sources.

Uh - the runway expansion and additional hangar space were both performed a couple of decades ago. Poke around awhile, and you’ll find those exact same photos being peddled in articles dating back that far. They’re being peddled as if they were new either out of ignorance or willful intent to mislead. They were originally taken by France’s SPOT satellite series, and caused a good deal of yelping at the NRO over the release of sub-meter resolution imagery to the commercial market at a time when the US had been the sole agent capable of such resolution for quite some time. Since then, and entire industry has grown up providing high resolution satellite imagery to private concerns for a variety of uses.

The problem here is the breadth of the wave; it’s not like a normal three foot high wave that breaks and immediately recedes. It’s more like the entire ocean suddenly gets three feet higher, and stays that way for a while.

It’s not “a three foot wave” that you would be able to body surf from waist high in the beach
It’s a three foot rise in the ocean level for a period of time. Depending on how much force i propelling it depends how far inland it could go

So far, effects seem subdued. Let’s hope they stay that way.
At least the areas under watch are well prepared for tsunamis, and know to take the advance warnings seriously. The enormous death toll in Indonesia was due to failure to get the word out, and failure to appreciate the implications of the warnings, which were issued several hours before the waves struck.
