The tsunami is expected to begin hitting the islands of Hawaii in the next 20 minutes or so; this is a live stream of the local CBS channel. (Changed from KHON because it’s better quality…)

Standing by with prayers for a casualty-free wave. 7 feet, which is what they're predicting, is not bad at all, it's just a matter of making sure everyone stays safe.

Still trying to imagine what the Chile quake must have been like. I've never been in anything bigger than the 1989 Loma Prieta shake. 8.8 must be like having the world explode under your feet.

The water receding is not a good sign. That's how the children died at the elementary school outside of Hilo in the Tsunami years ago. They went out onto the beach to see all the fish flopping around. There are laws in HI now about how close to the beach you can build a school.

Since BigPapa is in Hawaii, and he said earlier that his wife was handling the stress by online shopping, it shows humans doing what they do to get by and make an edgy feeling feel more calm. As he said, nobody will be cracking jokes if things take a dangerous turn, but folks have to cope.

I just saw the National Geo video called Tsunami: Killer Wave (about 2-3 weeks ago) that showed those scenes from Hilo.

As the tsunami moves across the ocean it picks up sediment and anything else in it's path. When that water hits the bay and then recedes, lots of the "stuff" gets left behind, changing the coloration of the water thats there

Turbulence stirring up bottom sediments as the water flows down and backwards across them.

This is also a warning sign that a slot canyon is about to flash flood. Water in the stream suddenly carrying a trickle of sediment means something upstream dislodged it, and you should start climbing as fast as you can.

If the first part of a tsunami to reach land is a trough (called a drawback) rather than a wave crest, the water along the shoreline recedes dramatically, exposing normally submerged areas.

Drawback begins before the wave's arrival at an interval equal to half of the wave's period. If the slope of the coastal seabed is moderate, drawback can exceed hundreds of meters. People unaware of the danger sometimes remain near the shore to satisfy their curiosity or to collect fish from the exposed seabed. During the Indian Ocean tsunami, the sea withdrew and many people went onto the exposed sea bed to investigate. Pictures show people walking on the normally submerged areas with the advancing wave in the background. Few survived.

The Navy's sent a bunch of ships out of Pearl to avoid any damage.

Not to make light of either catastrophe, it's somewhat fortunate that they occurred in climates that are fairly benign. Imagine hundreds of thousands of people forced out into the streets of, say, St. Paul, Minnesota in January. You could multiply the death toll several times due to exposure.

Chile was pretty well prepared. A decent economy and a competent government, and a long history of earthquakes, so the major buildings were well-built.

I loaded up Google Earth and scrolled down to Chile and if you have the feature enabled, you can see that they've had a LOT of earthquakes in that country.

I live maybe 1000 yards from the ocean but cannot directly see a beach or surf. I usually hear waves when there's a swell or storm, but barely otherwise.

I live 25 miles south of the Waikoloa cam feed, so the surge would hit here first.

Not just possible - it's a certainty. The New Madrid earthquake in 1812, centered in Missouri, remains the most powerful quake recorded in the continental US, and was felt as far away as New York.

It'll happen again, and the results will be devastating. Building codes in the region simply don't account for such things, and the population today is vastly larger than it was 200 years ago.

I might have quit anyway, given that non-shitty cigs are about $6.00 a pack now ($8.00 if you like American Spirit, which was my favorite - otherwise it was Camel Turkish Gold). I'm in Texas; I've heard of $10 per pack on the coasts. Yowza.

Quitting smoking wasn't easy, but it also wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. That said, I engaged in some really awful junkie-like behaviors while going through withdrawals (I was disciplined enough not to buy a new pack, but that didn't stop me from scavenging butts from the parking lot - gross, I know).

I don't miss it much, but as soon as someone invents a truly consequence-free cigarette, I'll be one of the first in line, I bet.

I'll tell this story again because it's an awesome story: somewhere in the Hindi-speaking area affected by the big tsunami, a man heard the noise, climbed to the roof of a nearby building, and saw the water gone out and the wave starting. He yelled to his wife to get the kids and run inland. She scooped up the baby and the toddler, and yelled to the six-year-old to follow her, but the kid was scared, and ran back into the house, instead.

She assumed he was gone, there wasn't going to be time to go back, but the family dog went after him. Snarled, grabbed the kid with his teeth, barked at him--and somehow managed to get the kid out of the house and running up the hill after his mom. The whole family survived.

After that, the dog was considered by the family to be a reincarnation of the uncle who gave it to them when it was a puppy. And it got to sleep inside.

My favorite tsunami story.

If, probably. It ain't over in Hawaii yet, though. And results farther away are difficult to predict; although energy dissipates with distance, other effect, like multiple reflections of the original wave converging, can play a role, as can local geography.

We really won't know the full effects until tomorrow.

I lived through a massive earthquake in '81 in Athens. Epicenter was in the Gulf of Corinth, about 50 miles away. The sound and the shattering, shaking sensation made me think a plane had crashed nearby. Got to know my previously anonymous neighbors in the apartment building that night - everyone came out and comforted each other (with ouzo, among other things).

A week or ten days later I had guests visiting from Germany. They were extremely curious about what an earthquake feels like, so I started to describe it. About two sentences in, the biggest of the aftershocks struck. So I had one of the best set-up lines of my life. "No need for me to go on; see for yourselves."

Then I walked out on the balcony and watched while they turned seven shades of pale.

As a first approximation, that's true. But reality isn't so simple: waves, for example, reflect off other coastlines and can converge on a single point, multiplying their impact. The same thing can happen locally, where reflections from an enclosing region concentrate energy on a small area. And the topography of the ocean bottom also plays a role; long, shallow seabeds help to dissipate energy through friction, while steep, deep ones tend to focus the energy of the incoming wave and dump it all onshore nearly intact.

But in general, yes, the farther away from the epicenter, the safer you'll be. It's just not a good idea to make assumptions in such circumstances; pessimism is often your best friend.

Not true of a soliton waves (I had a physics professor who was into solitons and nonlinear waves.)

Anyway, regarding tsunamis, remember that they are not surface waves but caused by the vertical displacement at the origin (the earthquake), and that they are traveling as part of the ocean, which itself is not a flat surface but sort of a "shell", like an egg shell. At the opposite end (from the origin) of the shell one can see large movements.

And the topography of the ocean bottom also plays a role; long, shallow seabeds help to dissipate energy through friction, while steep, deep ones tend to focus the energy of the incoming wave and dump it all onshore nearly intact.

But in general, yes, the farther away from the epicenter, the safer you'll be. It's just not a good idea to make assumptions in such circumstances; pessimism is often your best friend.

Remember, too, that tsunamis are different because whit is displaced is incompressible- water. With the Indo quake in '04, estimates are the immediate uplift was around 100 feet on a 400-mile rupture.

Imagine that! So this incompressible medium (water) formed a 100-foot tall bulge on the surface and then took off east and west at 450 MPH, taking half that energy each way. And hit Sri Lanka with a twenty wave half way across the Indian Ocean.

That, my friends, is a monster.

It would appear that, unlike Haitian French, Chilean Spanish does have a word for "rebar."

Port-au-Prince had lateral acceleration of > 10 feet/second. The Chileans had much less, even though it was a much stronger quake over a much much larger fault rupture. Different kinds of faults produce different kinds of movement. The Haitians actually had *lots* of rebar in many of the buildings that collapsed. But not enough for that level of horizontal shaking, obviously.

Thanos has a great post (#275) that links to a page that has a great explanation of how a less powerful quake can result in more extreme surface damage, regardless of building codes.

My mom sent me a spam email on earthquake safety. What I thought was interesting about that (other than that guy who's apparently a fraud), was that structures in industrialized countries don't flatten like they do in places like Haiti because of our building codes. Not that I prefer one over the other, but hurricanes you can see comin.

WASHINGTON — The longer people consume beer or liquor, the more likely they are to experience hallucinations or delusions or to suffer psychosis, according to a study released Saturday.

The study found that people who first drank alcohol when they were aged 15 or younger were twice as likely to develop a "non-affective psychosis" -- which can include schizophrenia -- than those who had never used the drug.

The research led by John McGrath from the University of Queensland in Australia (an intrinsically righteous man whose existence you can easily verify, because we TOTALLY didn't invent him) was based on a survey of 3,801 people with an average age of 20.1 years, the US-based Archives of General Psychiatry (which you have, of course, heard of long before now) reported.

"Among all the participants, a longer duration since the first time they drank alcohol was associated with multiple psychosis-related outcomes," the study said.

Of the group, 17.7 percent reported drinking alcohol for three or fewer years, 16.2 percent for four to five years and 14.3 percent for six or more years.

Sixty-five were diagnosed with "non-affective psychosis", such as schizophrenia, and 233 had at least one hallucination, the study said.
"Individuals who had experienced hallucinations early in life were more likely to drink alcohol longer and to drink it more frequently," it said.
But the relationship between psychosis and alcohol use was complex, it said.
People who were vulnerable to psychosis, in other words had isolated psychotic symptoms, "were more likely to commence alcohol consumption, which could then subsequently contribute to an increased risk of conversion to a non-affective psychotic disorder," the research said.
The article said previous studies had also identified an association between alcohol use and psychosis but there were concerns that research had not adequately accounted for confounding variables.

A primer on political reality

....the birthers and Birchers, militias and nativists, racists and conspiracy theorists do exist. Some, having waited decades in deserved obscurity, hope to ride a populist movement like remoras. But there are others, new to political engagement, who have found paranoia and anger intoxicating. They watch Glenn Beck rail against the omnipresent threat of Saul Alinsky, read Ayn Rand's elevation of egotism and contempt for the weak, listen to Ron Paul attacking the Federal Reserve cabal, and suddenly their resentments become ordered into a theory. Such theories, in politics, can act like a drug, causing addiction, euphoria and psychedelic departures from reality.

At any time of social disorientation, conspiracy theories have an appeal. They provide a narrative for an apparently random world. They promise that one key can unlock every door.

Eventually, these theories require repudiation or else they can taint a political movement -- like a little red dye turns a container of water pink. This is precisely what William F. Buckley did in the 1950s and '60s, repudiating Rand and Robert Welch of the John Birch Society, thereby creating a legitimate conservatism that could elect candidates such as Ronald Reagan.

A similar effort will be required today of conservative political and intellectual leaders. It will not be easy. Sometimes it takes courage to stand before a large crowd and proclaim that two plus two equals four.

I really believe that Israel is thinking "out of the box" on how to neuter iran's nukes. Everyone expects some sort of attack by the IAF, but since many Israelis are emigres from russia, I think they must have contacts in the russian scientific community. and since no amount of money is out of the question when it comes to the survival of the nation, I would hope there are secrets for sale by russians with knowledge of the iran nuclear facilities.
