And if I wish to make a universe... with what would I start - an apple pie?

So the task of responding to requests for Obama's birth certificate has fallen to Okubo, who until January had been spending 10-hour days primarily dealing with the H1N1 "swine flu" pandemic.
"I'm getting 40 to 50 requests every month for President Obama's birth certificate, all of them from the Mainland — Arizona, South Carolina, Florida," Okubo said. "None are from Hawai'i."

Update on my long-running struggle to get the USPS to forward my mail.
There has been some progress but I still don't have my mail, held by the USPS since February 6th. After a lot of classic bureaucratic run-around, I finally reached a real person at the USPS customer service center in Fort Worth. After a few minutes of checking, he found that my original change of address request, submitted on the 11th, had not been entered into the system until the 23rd, 12 full days later. A second request, submitted online the 21st, had actually made it into the system a day earlier.
The carrier had taken it upon himself to start holding my mail as soon as I asked for the original form, 5 days before I submitted it. The net result is that I have received nothing postmarked for the old address after February 2nd. The USPS claims that customers should allow "7-10 postal business days" for forwarded mail to start arriving but even allowing for the plethora of minor holidays observed at USPS, 22 actual, realworld days is well beyong this. The infuriating thing is that my carrier could apparently decide on his own to withhold my mail, with no cause or authorization, and there is not a goddamn thing anyone can or will do about it.
This has caused some serious problems, since I originally delayed submitting the change of address form because I was expecting some important documents and could still pick up mail at the old address. Little did I know that they would disappear into a black hole for nearly a month because the carrier decided they should. This is like some kind of dark Kafkaesque farce from a European dictatorship and is certainly not the United States Postal Service I have know for most of my life.
I know that most postal workers are vets and it is a tough job, mostly because of the agency's notoriously abusive management culture, but still, when someone who makes more than many lawyers or college professors cannot get a simple clerical task done, there is something seriously wrong.
It goes from wrong to outrageous and criminal when there is no accountability at all for this.

"How the Mountain of Climate Change Evidence Is Being Used to Undermine the Cause" [AlterNet]
As the backlash against climate science grows, the number of Americans who believe humans are to blame for warming the planet is shrinking.
Twenty-one years ago, in 1989, I wrote what many have called the first book for a general audience on global warming. One of the more interesting reviews came from the Wall Street Journal. It was a mixed and judicious appraisal. “The subject,” the reviewer said, “is important, the notion is arresting, and Mr. McKibben argues convincingly.” And that was not an outlier: around the same time, the first president Bush announced that he planned to “fight the greenhouse effect with the White House effect.”
I doubt that’s what the Journal will say about my next book when it comes out in a few weeks, and I know that no GOP presidential contender would now dream of acknowledging that human beings are warming the planet. Sarah Palin is currently calling climate science “snake oil” and last week, the Utah legislature, in a move straight out of the King Canute playbook, passed a resolution condemning "a well organized and ongoing effort to manipulate global temperature data in order to produce a global warming outcome" on a nearly party-line vote.
And here’s what’s odd. In 1989, I could fit just about every scientific study on climate change on top of my desk. The science was still thin. If my reporting made me think it was nonetheless convincing, many scientists were not yet prepared to agree.
Now, you could fill the Superdome with climate-change research data. (You might not want to, though, since Hurricane Katrina demonstrated just how easy it was to rip holes in its roof.) Every major scientific body in the world has produced reports confirming the peril. All 15 of the warmest years on record have come in the two decades that have passed since 1989. In the meantime, the Earth’s major natural systems have all shown undeniable signs of rapid flux: melting Arctic and glacial ice, rapidly acidifying seawater, and so on.
Somehow, though, the onslaught against the science of climate change has never been stronger, and its effects, at least in the U.S., never more obvious: fewer Americans believe humans are warming the planet. At least partly as a result, Congress feels little need to consider global-warming legislation, no less pass it; and as a result of that failure, progress towards any kind of international agreement on climate change has essentially ground to a halt.

Maybe climate change alarmists are simply wrong.
The models the IPCC uses to strike fear and alarm can't predict forcings caused by variations like ENSO and PDO.
Why should their crappy models be able to predict shifts in climate? The simple answer is they cannot.

Even if one were to take a modest approach to AGW it would be a logical choice. Ignoring it and taking the low road of James Inhofe, Lord Mockton, and others would be illogical and irrational. You can spread your bullshit about the IPCC all you want but the fact remains. CO2 causes warming. Fossil fuels while a lot of fun for the time being are not sustainable. If we don't start making the transition now we'll just wait for a crisis and by then it may be too late. I'll take my chances with the IPCC before I do with Andre Watts.

It is also a trace gas.
There were also times in the Earth's history when C02 was ten times higher than current levels and the Earth was in the throes of an Ice Age.

Commenting on a White House staff-level meeting with leaders of atheist groups, Sean Hannity claimed that religious groups "have not received this treatment from the Obama White House." In fact, President Obama himself has met with numerous religious leaders, and the administration's contacts with religious groups include two days of meetings between administration staffers and more than 60 religious leaders.

So what. You link to a website to Monte Hieb who is an anti-AGW puke that works for the State of West Virginia mining office. Read on:
Monte Hieb, sometime West Virginia Office of Miner’s Safety chief engineer, can scarcely be accused of neutrality in the Climate Wars. Deservedly celebrated for his web site on the fossils of the coal measures of Appalachia, the amateur climate scientist has created a truly remarkable graph for The National Center for Policy Analysis "Global Warming Primer".
Coal enthusiasts may have a case to make, but Hieb's peculiar history of palaeoclimate seems an improbable tool for recruiting scientists to the fossil fuel cause-- it rivals the Creation Museum's take on geochronology.
Hieb's Kindergarten approach to radiative forcing by water vapor had atmospheric science professionals laughing long before he tried his hand at finger painting palaeoclimate . The Primer's cut and paste counterfeits of curves generated by mathematical models are all too reminiscent of the statistical shenanigans that led to the 'Hockey Stick' affair being denounced by Center chairman Pete DuPont in his Wall Street Journal column.

Why would you use a West Virginia mining engineer (Monte Hieb) as an expert resource on climate change? The website you are basing your argument on is not peer reviewed. He is not a climate scientist. He has not published any peer reviewed papers on climate science that I could find. Most of his website is devoted to fossil hobbyists.I highly recommend using real scientists and real science. The website RealClimate.org has an excellent discussion.

They try the late night hit and run, usually on stale threads, hoping no one can/will answer them.
For those who are interested, you can look at this graph on wikipedia for a quick overview of temperature on a 500 million time scale:
Image: File:Phanerozoic_Climate_Change.png
From the period starting in the middle of Carboniferous to the middle of the Permian there were periods of ice ("ice ages"). However, unlike the claims of tonight's troll, the CO2 levels did indeed fall during that time:
Image: File:Phanerozoic_Carbon_Dioxide.png
Additionally, during that time the atmosphere as a whole was somewhat different, the land masses were arranged very differently than today, and indeed as the Sun was younger it was not as bright as today.
"Imploder", like so many AGW deniers, just doesn't care for the truth.
91 | Gus Sun, Feb 28, 2010 1:42:10am |

Monte Hieb of Summersville wants to find the answer to the following question:

I loved Istanbul for the few weeks I was in Turkey. It was spring/summer 2002 and I can't begin to describe how happy they were to see an American.
The Turks are way cool. They try very, very hard to make a modern society with a lot of things stacked against them. Don't mention "Midnight Express", though.

However, I just finished watching "Once Upon A Time In The West", at the behest of KT. I'd only seen parts of it on TV before, years ago. This time in DVD glory on my computer (much cleaner, and allowed me to absorb the visual quality.)

Wikipedia:
Midnight Express is a 1978 American film directed by Alan Parker and based on Billy Hayes' book of the same name adapted into screenplay by Oliver Stone. Hayes was a young American student sent to a Turkish prison for trying to smuggle hashish out of Turkey. The movie deviates from the book's accounts of the story, especially in its portrayal of Turks, and some have criticized the movie version, including Billy Hayes himself. Later, both Oliver Stone and Billy Hayes expressed their regret on how Turkish people were portrayed in the movie.
That being said, not all of Turkey is like Istanbul, by a long shot. Some places are more 'Western' ---and many are much less so.

I did a few exercises and lot of technical visits to tiny units all around the northern borders. Our usual hotel was a wooden firetrap that had been German HQ during WW I. It was near the airport, and the owner had been an interpreter for our units when they were established in the 50's.

It’s a dangerous practice since the aircraft’s engines are running while the fuel nozzle is still connected to the jets. The training is for both pilots and ground crews and it is being done to enable the aircraft to carry as much fuel as possible for long-range missions.
Fuel nozzles are traditionally disconnected from fighter aircraft while they are still parked in hangers and before they are rolled out to the runway, where they usually wait for several minutes before takeoff and while burning fuel. The new protocol includes keeping fuel trucks on the runway, having ground personnel reattach the nozzle and fuel the aircraft to the maximum fullness, disconnecting seconds before takeoff.
“We understand that many of our threats and challenges require us to develop a long-range capability,” one senior IAF officer explained. “Part of our preparation includes knowing how to fuel our aircraft so they can have as much fuel as possible.”
Last week, the IAF inaugurated a new unmanned aerial vehicle called the Heron TP. With the same wingspan as a Boeing 737, the Heron TP is Israel’s largest and most sophisticated drone, weighing 4,650 kg. and capable of flying for 36 hours while carrying a payload of hundreds of kilograms. The Heron will increase the IAF’s long-range capabilities, mainly in intelligence and surveillance, and according to foreign reports could also have missile strike capabilities.

Therin lies the confusion. Do we insult the Turks or do we recognize history with a Congressional resolution. Will the resolution make the pain of the Armenians any less? Will the resolution free up some money somewhere? Will the resoluion do anything other than piss off an ally?
From what I have read, it happened, history books say it happened, and I have not found a Congressional Resolution that says it did not happen, so, in effect, we do recognize it.
I guess I just don't put much faith in a Congressional resolution about this. It's words, not deeds. Maybe the time spent on this could be spent on figuring out how to stop current genocides...

While I've loved IMDB since its inception, one of the screwier things about it are the "members" who rate the films. There appears to be a growing tradition of young internet-punks who appear to want to make their mark by dissing great movies. E.g., anyone who gives Shichinin no samurai (Seven Samuri) one start (out of 10) is clearly doing so simply to call attention to themselves.

Very Alex Jones of you...
Actually, what he's saying is true. It's buried in a WaPo article from Janurary. Obama is continuing a Bush-era policy:
After the Sept. 11 attacks, Bush gave the CIA, and later the military, authority to kill U.S. citizens abroad if strong evidence existed that an American was involved in organizing or carrying out terrorist actions against the United States or U.S. interests, military and intelligence officials said. . . .The Obama administration has adopted the same stance. If a U.S. citizen joins al-Qaeda, "it doesn't really change anything from the standpoint of whether we can target them," a senior administration official said. "They are then part of the enemy."
Both the CIA and the JSOC maintain lists of individuals, called "High Value Targets" and "High Value Individuals," whom they seek to kill or capture. The JSOC list includes three Americans, including [New Mexico-born Islamic cleric Anwar] Aulaqi, whose name was added late last year. As of several months ago, the CIA list included three U.S. citizens, and an intelligence official said that Aulaqi's name has now been added.

Glenn beck blames drunkenness for liberalism, or vice versa.
Glenn Beck used to be a social liberal before he discovered Alcoholics Anonymous and then consequently sobered up. This admission—coming straight from the man's lips on his Friday TV show on FNC during a special
entitled "Who Are You?"—may not be a surprise to some who know Beck's backstory, but it certainly reinforces the conventional wisdom that liberalism breeds weakness and is oftentimes an impediment to personal self-improvement. His declaration came in the context of "knowing yourself" politically and ideologically, the theme of Friday's Glenn Beck show special on FNC. Stating that his recovery from alcoholism came only after he truly discovered who he was—libertarian conservative—Beck also went on to assert that he later realized he was only a liberal because he didn't want to make tough choices or be consistent.
I think he just discovered there was no money in being a raving, hysterical, batshit crazy lib, the market having been saturated by committed amateurs.

Predictably, the United States and most European democracies issued statements condemning Cuba's human rights abuses. And predictably, many Latin American countries -- including some who claim to champion human rights, such as Argentina and Mexico -- have remained silent, or made wishy-washy statements.
But the big question is how Zapata's death will play where it really counts -- inside Cuba. For the first three days after the death of the Afro-Cuban bricklayer imprisoned since 2003, the regime of Gen. Raúl Castro had not allowed the Cuban media to report it.
Finally, on Saturday, the muzzle was removed.

Cuba's military dictatorship -- that's what it is, by any dictionary's definition -- is in an awkward position following the death of political prisoner Orlando Zapata after an 83-day hunger strike, and the decision of four other jailed dissidents to stop eating to demand the release of all prisoners of conscience.

I would disagree about the Korean War. Media culture certainly portrays it as a stalemate at best, and a defeat when they can. They do this by commonly (mis)portraying the war as an effort to conquer the communist north and unify it with the free south. The facts are very different, however. There is no doubt at all that the war started with Kim Il Sung's effort to bring the south into his Stalinist state. In this, he was comprehensively defeated. His Chinese allies lost over a million soldiers by their own admission and this made Mao very leery of military adventurism for the rest of his tenure, though this was not commonly realized in the west.

Critics are also pointing to the nomination as evidence of Democratic hypocrisy for accusing the Bush administration, specifically his attorney general, Alberto Gonzalez, of politicizing the Justice Department in the firing of several attorneys.
"When President Obama said he wanted to restore the independence and dignity of the U.S. attorney's office, in light of the Alberto Gonzalez fiasco, then appoints a political activist and party fundraiser, it seems a little to me like 'politics as usual' than 'change we can believe in,'" Bill Brudvik, a candidate for the post, told the Fargo Forum.
Purdon, a lawyer since 1995 who lacks any prosecutorial experience, has donated more than $12,000 to Democratic causes since 2000, including $2,300 to Obama's 2008 presidential campaign.

Carter was prompted by the recent ethics committee’s “public admonishment” of Rangel, who should have known better than to accept private travel expenses from a corporation, a two-page report on the matter concluded.
But last week’s decision was unrelated to the exhaustive ethics investigation into a host of questionable matters related to Rangel’s past tax practices, financial disclosures and personal property arrangements.
The former Texas District Court judge, in an interview with The Hill, explained his plan to reignite a lengthy crusade to force a House vote on Rangel’s fate atop the tax-writing panel.

“The other allegations were not addressed. The tax issues, the apartment issues, subsidized apartment, and using his public stationery to raise money for his private charity -- those are still pending,” Carter said.

The stench of hypocrisy is strong.
Don't get Pelosi wrong. Surely, if a powerful House member "has proven himself to be ethically unfit" we know "the burden" indeed "falls upon" his party to oust him. In such a case, party leaders would obviously ask: "Do they want to remove the ethical cloud that hangs over the Capitol?"So Pelosi explained in October 2004. The subject was Tom DeLay. The House ethics committee had admonished the Republican majority leader. DeLay used the Federal Aviation Administration to track Democratic state rivals. He hosted a fundraiser with energy lobbyists while energy legislation was under consideration.
Pelosi argued: "We must stop the influence of special interests so that the people know that we are here for the people's interests."
After all, this is why we have institutions like the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service. Except, that is, for the namesake and the center. An oil drilling company (special interest) made a $1 million donation to Rangel's center. The quid pro quo, allegedly, included legislative favors. The matter, like so much of Rangel's world, is under investigation.
Rangel has one of the powerful jobs in government. The New York Democrat is chairman of the House Ways and Means committee. The committee has jurisdiction over all taxation. And that's the rub. Rangel has a problem paying all his taxes.

Attempted dhimmification.
But at one Minnesota public school, critics may be in for something more sinister. Khalid Elmasry says in an affidavit that after he criticized Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy (TiZA), which his child used to attend, the school's executive director made a statement at a parent meeting that Elmasry took "as an attempt to incite violence against me and my family." Even more disturbing is what Janeha Edwards -- a former administrative assistant at the school -- says in an affidavit the director suggested after she displeased him: "We could just kill you, yeah tell your husband we'll do his job for him."
These bizarre developments are described in documents filed in a legal battle royal between TiZA -- a K-8 charter school with campuses in Inver Grove Heights and Blaine -- and the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota. Last year, the ACLU filed a federal suit claiming that TiZA impermissibly promotes religion.
In January, the ACLU sought a protective order, telling the court that intimidation by TiZA was discouraging potential witnesses from appearing. On Feb. 10, the court barred witness harassment or intimidation by either party.
Elmasry is one witness who sought such protection. In January, he testified about TiZA's financial entanglement with the Muslim American Society of Minnesota at a Minnesota Senate subcommittee hearing on charter school lease aid. Shortly thereafter, Elmasry says in an affidavit, he was informed by a friend and TIZA parent that TiZA authorities had called a parent meeting, where they showed a video of Elmasry's testimony. Then, according to the parent's account, Asad Zaman, the school's director and an imam -- or Muslim religious leader -- accused Elmasry of talking to the Minnesota Department of Education and "selling" his "Iman," meaning his Islamic faith, according to Elmasry's affidavit.
Elmasry was frightened, he says. "It is well-known in Islam that a Muslim who rejects his or her faith is committing an act punishable by death," according to his affidavit. "There are many accounts of Muslims taking matters into their own hands and killing people they believe have sold or rejected their Islamic faith or Iman."
SNIP
According to the ACLU, the alleged pattern of intimidation extends to any "who might speak publicly about events at TiZA and its use of public funds." Even Chuck Samuelson, the ACLU's executive director, has been a target. In July 2009, the school filed a defamation claim in excess of $100,000 against the ACLU, citing Samuelson's simple statement that "[TiZA is] a theocratic school ... as plain as the substantial nose on my face."
Alan Dershowitz, a noted Harvard law professor, has described TiZA's defamation claim as "lawfare -- the use of law as a weapon of warfare." Controversial Islamic organizations "sue their critics for defamation, not with the intent to win the case, but with the hope of imposing an unaffordably high cost on criticism of their actions," he and Elizabeth Samson wrote in the British newspaper the Guardian.

Some grin; others scowl. They point accusingly at unseen enemies or extend open arms in a show of unity. Men appear in tailored suits to suggest cosmopolitanism, in tribal robes to appeal to more traditional Iraqis and in clerical turbans as a reminder to the devout. Thanks to a government quota, one in four candidates is female, and they reflect the broad spectrum of Iraqi womanhood, from lipstick and highlighted hair to bare faces framed by flowing black cloaks.
"If votes were counted according to the amount of time spent staring at the posters, she would definitely win," said Bilal Nouri, a supermarket worker in Fallujah who gazed longingly at a poster of an attractive female candidate.
Analyzing, judging and — especially — mocking all this posturing has become a national pastime as Iraqis prepare to vote on March 7. Not only a way to needle the political elite, it's much safer for ordinary Iraqis to make fun of the 6,000 or so candidates than it is for them to voice their opinions on the issues: securing the nation, religious vs. nationalist agendas, rampant corruption, the lack of basic services and a dismal economy.

I've had a hankering for Spanish rice lately, and that's gonna get made tonight. Haven't had it for years. My grandmother used to make it, so it's one of those childhood comfort foods for me. I don't have her recipe, but I think I can get pretty close.

I've got some, but the rice I'm talking about doesn't use it. I think it's also called Mexican rice, although I doubt it has anything to do with either Spain or Mexico. Rice, browned with some oil first along with onions and garlic, then finished in chicken broth and diced tomatoes.
I've made paella before, and that needs saffron. Fortunately, a little bit goes a long, long way.

Comparisons between the two countries will no doubt be much discussed when the U.N. hosts a conference in New York City on March 31 to hash out how best to help Haiti rebuild. Donor governments already know why there was so much less destruction in Chile: it's because the government there forces builders to adhere to rigorous codes, while Haiti's incorrigible corruption and carelessness left such regulation all but non-existent. On the global corruption index put out by Transparency International, a Berlin-based nonprofit that lists countries from the least to most corrupt, Chile ranks 25th and Haiti 168th. And while Chilean President Michelle Bachelet hit the streets on Saturday reassuring citizens about her government's earthquake response, Haitian President Rene Preval has been AWOL for weeks.

The exercise was watched by military attaches from about 30 countries but not Pakistan and China, neighbors who would be keen to take a look at India's military firepower.
It follows the first official talks between India and Pakistan since the militant attacks in Mumbai in 2008.
The talks ended with an agreement to keep in touch, signaling relations remain fraught despite a desire to reopen a dialogue that India suspended after the Mumbai killings.

Yar'Adua, 58, arrived in Nigeria under the cover of darkness at the nation's capital airport, an adviser said, apparently leaving in an ambulance escorted by a heavily armed military guard. He had left the country Nov. 23 and spent three months at a Saudi hospital, where his physician said he had been diagnosed with acute pericarditis, an inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart.

ETA chief Ibon Gogeascoechea and two other suspected separatists were arrested in a joint French-Spanish police operation in the village of Cahan, France, following a long surveillance operation on a cottage that had been rented using false identity papers, said Spanish Interior Minister Alferdo Perez Rubalcaba.

The two other suspects were part of an ETA "commando unit" that was preparing "to enter Spain almost certainly with the worst of intentions," Rubalcaba said.

Thanks
Dark_Falcon Hoops, I have a late addition to the Prayer List: Last week my siter fell and seriously fractured her ankle. She has cerebral palsy, and though two surgeries have enabled her to walk normally, when she hurries she can still fall sometimes. Sounds like you could use a Jindo.
Jindos serve as excellent watchdogs, able to distinguish family from foe, friends from strangers. The Korean Army is known to use Jindos as guard dogs at major bases. Because Jindos rarely bark aggressively, especially in familiar environments, an owner may lend special credence to the warning of his/her pet. Many Jindos do not take any food from anyone other than their owners.
Haku is my alarm system. Then, there's my backup.
Of course neither helps if you're not home.

Our husky and red healer are great alarms... if they are in the right place when they need to be... last summer when the bear tore apart our front porch, we had forgot to put the dogs out that night... they were curled up in the house... it helps to put the alarms where they will be most effective.
I've actually seen the red healer chase a bear, trying to nip at the bears back legs.

More musical, high quality--I get the feeling that the Bollywood producers have taken from Hollywood what they needed and haven't sacrificed their own culture for it.
Very creative people. That train video, for example. The music and dance are incorporated into the sounds and movement of the train--comforting and energizing at the same time. The use of the darkness in the tunnels and traditional dance moves is incredible to me.

A senior citizen drove his brand new Corvette convertible out of the dealership.
Taking off down the road, he floored it to 80 m.p.h., enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left. "Amazing," he thought as he flew down I-95, pushing the pedal even more.
Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a state trooper behind him, lights flashing and siren blaring.
He floored it to 100 mph, then 110, then 120. Suddenly he thought, "What am I doing? I'm too old for this," and pulled over to await the trooper's arrival.
Pulling in behind him, the trooper walked up to the Corvette, looked at his watch, and said, "Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me a reason for speeding that I've never heard before, I'll let you go."
The old gentleman paused. Then said, "Years ago, my wife ran off with a state trooper. I thought you were bringing her back."
"Have a good day, sir," replied the trooper.

True story: A friend of mine was driving in the Southwest, where they tend not to care about speeding so much, in his Jaguar XM8. Doing 120 (top speed for the American model: 157 mph).
Trooper appears behind him. He pulls over.
Trooper asks if he can try the car till the next rest stop. Gives my friend the keys to the patrol car. Takes off like a bat out of hell. They get to the next stop, swap keys, and the trooper thanks him for a fun time.

Unemployed? I must have missed something.
What, were you too efficient for that store?
You nailed it. A number of factors, but a lot of it comes down to I could see I was upsetting the status quo, and I wasn't going to get support from the store manager. I over heard the district manager telling the store manager furniture department looked "extraordinary" (I rearranged it to be neater and more accessible) yet the manager never passed on the compliments.
I asked for wall signage so you could see where the used furniture department was (my department was in corner of large super market sized store), and he kept telling me he ordered the signs and they were ready, but they never showed up in two months.
And to top things off, there was one "crazy" employee who kept making vague threat to me (and others) about this or that, I pointed this out to the manager, the manager didn't want to get involved.
My bottom line opinion, this guy facilitated, he didn't manage and we were not going to get along down the road.
I quit... I'm too type "A" for a place where you have people just happy to matriculate... I'm a square peg in a black hole.
The lovely lady and I agree, I need to hold out until I can get programming work again, part time, contract or full time, doesn't matter, that's what I do the best and I can "play better" with that sort of work environment.

A few years ago, I saw Ravi Shankar at SMU's McFarlin Auditorium. For almost 3 hours, this guy in his 80s just sat on the floor and blazed. It was one of the most awesome concerts I've ever seen. It ranks up there with seeing Alan Holdsworth, Chad Wackerman, and Jimmy Johnson performing in front of an audience of about 100 people at Dan's Silver Leaf in Denton.

If you use it as a sping and fall crop it'll be ok. You could also probably use it as a winter crop too. However if it gets too much summer heat it gets a little tough.

Bring the price down then...I'm not sure you do that by taxing every thing to pay for healthcare..

A silver leaf fern tomato works really well in a more ornamental bed. It grows in a more mounding type manner and the leaves look more like an ornamental plant then a regular tomato plant. I stick it in my flower beds and it fits right in.
I also like some of the multicolored chards. They can look really good when planted with other ornamentals and flowers.

I believe that's correct, and is one reason those, ham hocks and other less desirable cuts are still widely popular with American blacks. They're just part of their heritage. There's something about the foods you grew up with that keeps you coming back to them.
It should be noted, though, that making use of the entire animal was normally the rule, rather than the exception it's become today. While the slaves might get the less than choice parts, they still weren't simply thrown away or fed to pets, as they are now. In other cultures, chitterlings were used as sausage casings, although this sort of meat preparation doesn't lend itself well to the hot, humid climate of the south.

Police enter Jerusalem holy site
Israeli police have clashed with Palestinian protesters at the Jerusalem compound housing one of the Islam's holiest sites, the al-Aqsa mosque.Police say they went into the compound to disperse some 20 masked protesters throwing stones at foreign tourists.
The Islamic body which oversees administration of the area disputes the police account of events.
This is the latest in a series of clashes amid high tensions over religious sites in the past week.
The Jerusalem compound also contains the Western Wall, a sacred site for Jews.
Clashes broke out in the West Bank town of Hebron on Friday over Israel's decision to list two disputed shrines as heritage sites.

1. Climate Change
2. Health care reform in the US
3. The Economy
4. National Defense/Foreign PolicyThis board will have a range of responses ...
Number one because it's a root issue that will affect the other three.

re: #504 negativ
I am a math-averse introvert with a misanthropic streak and a low tolerance for tedium.
I picked up Bash shell scripting without much effort, and from there I went on to learn C and Python in short order. Don't mistake that for a brag; I have almost no other skills in life.
Anyway, on Friday my boss told me in no uncertain terms that my tenure as The Tech Guy is over, and I am now "promoted" to a low-level managerial position.
Shit. If they wanted to get rid of me, they should have just fired my ass. Why stretch it out?
Literally overnight, I've gone from having a job I was fairly good at and more or less enjoyed, to having a job that makes me want to punch babies and kick puppies, and for which I have no aptitude whatsoever.
Talk about being set up to fail.
Anyway, if any of you go into work Monday and suddenly find yourself at the mercy of the guy who has always hated you for being unable to correctly set your default printer in the control panel, well... I'm truly sorry. It wasn't my idea.
I know how you feel. I really don't want to manage anyone. I really don't want to run a department, I am not so much a people person (any Lizards have any clues to that statement), and I am most suited to being given a task and finishing it usually better than ever expected.
But I have to have the support structure around me to accomplish that. I really didn't feel I was getting that at the thrift store. They had a inertia there that was on autopilot, and good, bad or indifferent, it seemed like they did not want to "ruin" that.
It was a effort on my part to try something different, something that certainly didn't pay no where near as well as programming jobs, but still, something that was visceral, down to earth, good hard days work, and the money covered my current needs.
I need to hold out this time until I can get back to finding a programming position.

My dog is too old to chew stuff, so everything is safe around her, but if there's a thunderstorm when I'm not home I'll find that she's scratched or chewed on a door frame. And she sometimes pees inside the house (not often, but it happens occasionally.)

And gin. Apparently Churchill used to mix his martinis by shaking the gin with ice and briefly glancing at a bottle of vermouth.

The Sound of Round has weighed in from the southland…
“LIMBAUGH: You know I'm getting so many people -- this Louise Slaughter comment on the dentures? I'm getting so many people -- this is big. I mean, that gets a one-time mention for a laugh, but there are people out there that think this is huge because it's so stupid. I mean, for example, well, what's wrong with using a dead person's teeth? Aren't the Democrats big into recycling? Save the planet? And so what? So if you don't have any teeth, so what? What's applesauce for? Isn't that why they make applesauce”
Ah yes Mr. Limbaugh, let them “eat applesauce”; indeed.

I usually open the bottle of vermouth and tilt the martini glass over the neck to catch some of the essence before I shake the gin.

My martinis consist of 100-proof potato vodka mixed with a splash of orphan's tears and garnished with a large Psilocybin mushroom. I typically finish one off by shouting "DOWN THE MUTHAFUCKIN HATCH, YO!" and then snorting half my body weight in uncut Peruvian cocaine off the ample breasts of an underage Thai ladyboy. Then I run for congress as a social conservative, and win.
