Obama’s Pie Addiction Revealed

Lifestyle • Views: 2,262

President Obama likes pie.

Other well-known people who like(d) pie: Joseph Stalin, Karl Marx, and Glenn Beck. Draw your own conclusions.

The Thanksgiving menu at the White House included six kinds of pie. The White House pastry chef has said the first family’s favorite dessert is huckleberry cobbler with caramel ice cream.

Is asking the man with the nuclear codes to give give up cigs, booze and pie all at the same time really wise?

Pie. If it isn’t apple or cherry, it isn’t worth the trouble to make. And you better use lard in that pastry :D

The pie-loving would probably be OK by itself; it’s when you match up that pie-loving with the smoking habit that makes this stuff really serious.

I love pie. I make my own crust using manteca (it’s not just a shithole town in California, it’s also Spanish for lard). I make pumpkin pie (from scratch, first inventing the universe, then roasting fresh pumpkin and going from there), mince meat pie, an ‘almost fat-free cheesecake’, apple pie, rhubarb pie…I’m a goddamn pie-making whore! If I could make a pie for the President, he’d declare a national holiday so he could enjoy my crust in peace.

But I don’t think the intake of lots of sugar in and of itself causes diabetes.

Some types of diabetics are just diabetic. Others are diabetic or borderline diabetic because of excessive weight, not caused by sugar alone.

This is still a dangerous world.

And uncertainty
And potential mental losses.

Rarely is the question asked
Is our children learning?
Will the highways of the internet
Become more few?
How many hands have I shaked?

They misunderestimate me.
I am a pitbull on the pantleg of opportunity.
I know that the human being and the fish
Can coexist.

Where our wings take dream.

Vulcanize society!

Hey… I’m an atheist, so I don’t have a dog in this fight, but I noticed this paragraph…

“As we stood their admiring the church’s ornate altar and vestibule, the Christian hordes circulating through Jerusalem suddenly descended, like an Old Testament plague, on the church.

What’s with the literary allusions to “hordes” and “plague?” This is a magazine with a usual level of scholarly discourse, but in this case, it sounded like a cheap shot from a tabloid.

Or something like that. I come across folk from time to time who are genuinely shocked - my wife’s Baptist co-religionists are among them - to learn that there were Christians in the Levant when their ancestors were trying to get the hang of that whole crop-rotation and government of laws thing.

Doctor: Yeah, and you also smoke, drink and—in your own words—live on a steady diet of bacon. I wouldn’t be surprised if you eat salt by the spoonful.
Me: What should I do?
Doctor: Stop doing all those things.

LOL My mother was a big fan. Had a number of albums.

Ezra Pound had an essay on Enlgish poetry and he was discussing in it exercises composed around the funereal obsequies of someone or other whom history forgot only shortly after his own damned relatives did, and he noted the absolute mind-bending lack of proportion in the things as what made them bad poetry, even if they were exercises in technical perfection.

That song’s a good example of that very thing.

I’m inclined to agree, although I do think that it should be okay to ban a specific type of firearm if you have a very good reason. But I think that should only apply to the really, really high-powered stuff.

Daley keeps saying that we need to get guns off the streets. I agree. But I have a hard time believing that the gun crime rate would be any different if the ban never started.

I can feel for Obama and his marginally high cholesterol. I just went to the doc two weeks ago. It went like this:

Doctor: You have high blood pressure.
Me: What? I’m 27. I run 15 miles a week.
Doctor: Yeah, and you also smoke, drink and—in your own words—live on a steady diet of bacon. I wouldn’t be surprised if you eat salt by the spoonful.
Me: What should I do?
Doctor: Stop doing all those things.
Me: Impossible.
Doctor: Fine. Just stop smoking then.

I infuriate doctors. I can see in their eyes how much they want me to have bad cholesterol, or high blood pressure, or incipient diabetes, or something, so they can browbeat me into losing twenty pounds.

Instead “Your blood pressure is very low. Is it always like this?”

“Yup. Should I worry?”

“Well, it’s normal. Low normal.”

“I could eat more sodium.”

“Uh…don’t do that!”

I’m absolutely no good at it whatsoever.
One time my family felt sorry for me because everyone was catching something except me, so when I made a run up to the cabin, they took my line and put a fish on it. When I got back everyone was so excited - look - you caught something! Pull it in! When I pulled the line in - the fish they had put onto my line had gotten away. Now, that’s some really bad luck!

Not a bad view. Don’t worry about grenade launchers though. Those are federally regulated as destructive devices, and even I think it should be OK for a state to prohibit them, though some states do not.

Hey y’all.
You can’t make this shit up:
‘Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, the Republican whip, argued that unemployment benefits dissuade people from job-hunting “because people are being paid even though they’re not working.”

Unemployment insurance “doesn’t create new jobs. In fact, if anything, continuing to pay people unemployment compensation is a disincentive for them to seek new work,” Kyl said during debate over whether unemployment insurance and other benefits that expired amid GOP objections Sunday should be extended.

“I’m sure most of them would like work and probably have tried to seek it, but you can’t argue that it’s a job enhancer. If anything, as I said, it’s a disincentive. And the same thing with the COBRA extension and the other extensions here,” said Kyl.”

Okay, every choice carries certain risks. The odds as you call them vary by study. Gun accidents happen. For all these things training and discipline keep you safe. Cars, guns, boats, power tools all carry risks. By the safety odds, I should buy rather than build furniture.

As I see it the trick is this-take a hard look at what you want your last resort self defense to be. Whatever you choose from a shotgun to actually relying exclusively on police, equip yourself as best you can. Good locks and some extra phone extensions would make sense for the pacifist. Choosing a gated community would be a great idea. When I give classes I push 3 things above all else-awareness, intelligence and training. I’m promoting the consideration of the idea that the “self defense” benefits of keeping a gun in your home are far outweighed by the potential for harm to loved ones.

Considering the fact that it’d be quite easy to find the suspect (direct or negligent) should anything go wrong in that scenario, even perhaps in the rare instance that a burglar knows where to find the gun and can access it before the owner awakes, I wouldn’t think that’d happen very often.

Actually I was on the pistol team in the army, thoroughly enjoy combat hand gunning courses and prefer a shotgun for home defense. That being said, shit happens. A daughter’s friend committed suicide with a family gun, there are accidents, guns are stolen, taken from those using them, etc, etc.

I can’t rightly consider the issue unless I deal with as many perspectives as possible.

Because he’s wrong. He has no evidence that unemployment benefits (keep in mind unemployment benefits are not remotely equal to your salary) DISSUADE job-searching. It’s just more silliness from Kyl, and reminds me why I can’t vote Republican, hah. It’s just like the stupid republican talking point bullshit about how tax brackets make people want to earn less, because they don’t understand how the tax brackets work.

In other news, the fact that we don’t throw nets over the unemployed after their 2nd month of unemployment and cage them like stray animals is dissuading job-searching…

Why would any sane human being going through surgery without anesthesia?

What would be the point?

And again, labor is not “harm.” It’s a normal biological process by which the human race is continued. It just happens to also hurt a lot, and women have been bravely (in my opinion) doing it for a long time.

I wasn’t wishing harm on you, I was wishing for you to know what it is to be a woman, in the number one thing we do that requires strength.

I agree in full with that. The smart thing is fully exploit the choices you do have. I admit gun people get too comfortable handling/storing them. Cops get that really bad. The gun gets tossed around like the radio and handcuffs.

An example from one of my classes-“No guns due to small kids all over the place? Pregnant wife? No problem, lock up & store them well away from harms reach. Now lets take a good look at how well your doors and windows lock. Got local PD in your speed dial on the cell phones? Alarms? Good smoke detectors?”

re: #399 Locker

Locker, in my opinion, the statistics on gun safety is incredibly muddy and should not be claimed by the Democrats.

I literally used to work for the Brady campaign, and I became disenchanted because I didn’t see an actual attempt to gather clear data.

I feel that gun ownership is one of the areas where the Democrats are unscientific. Guns are out there already. They’re not going away. Criminalizing them has not shown to reduce gun ownership by criminals one whit in an already-gun-saturated environment. Our current justice system doesn’t really work as a deterrent for hardened criminals, so the penalty of added time for the criminality of a gun is beside the point.

I hate guns, I hate what they represent, and I hate the feel of them. Guns are cheating, to me. But I don’t think that any of the statistics I’ve ever seen backs up that gun ownership is the problem. I think we have a huge cultural problem with violence, and a massively fucked up private prison system that’s a training ground for violent criminals.

If Democrats— and a lot of the ‘left wing’— spent half the energy they do on guns fighting for prison reform, I’d respect them a lot more.

Morever, gun accidents are something that individual people can prevent. To not buy a gun because lots of people have gun accidents is like not buying a car because lots of people have car accidents. (And sure, you don’t need a gun— you don’t need a car, either.) You can do things to prevent having a gun accident, and you can actually make it a lot less likely than having a car accident.

I never sparred in krav, and I’m planning to start 6 months of muay thai soon (probably this week.) It will be fun to be able to spar. As an ex-boxer and ex-boxing instructor and ex-teacher of other disciplines: Do not full-contact spar, unless you have good reason to believe that you will be in combat situations in your life. Blows to the head are more serious than we had previously though, and brain cell death is inevitable with any full-contact sparring that allows headstrikes.

Grapple training is okay, but do not, if you value that brain, do full-contact with strikes to the head allowed.

It’s basically piling micro-concussion on micro-concussion.

Good analogy. There is an arc of safety and expewrience. We are all so careful at first then the fear fades and we make a mistake. And yes near perfection is the handling standard. If you ever see serious defensive pistol competition, watch the range officers and how the shooters defer to them. Utterly and instantly. The best SWAT or champion will bust his butt to keep the instructors and range officers happy with their moves.

Including a guy pushing me off the roof of a two-story building, me hitting the wall of the building opposite, dropping to the street, and being basically unharmed. I went back into the party, and asked the host to throw him out before I pushed him off the roof and saw how someone with a normal body handled that fall.

Plus I once took off my girlfriend’s pants with my toes while handcuffed to the bed.

I am a mutant. And nobody actually knows what it is. The downside is that I’ll probably develop crippling arthritis in about ten years, and I have a weird immune system. But it’s well-fucking-worth it to have had the superhero moments I’ve had over the years.

I don’t know which I’m more proud of.

both of those moments are winners. be a good lefty and give them both a medal!

Our Secular Coalition visit to the White House

The headline in a press release from the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights stated, “Obama Aides Host Catholic Bashers.” Catholic League president Bill Donohue referred to representatives of the Secular Coalition for America as “some of the biggest anti-religious zealots in the nation,” and that many of us “would crush Christianity” if we could. (Interestingly, my dictionary defines “zealot” as a fanatical adherent to a cause, especially a religious one.) The Catholic League ended its diatribe with, “It is important that the public learn of the contents of this meeting. We will do what we can to find out what happened.” What on earth are they expecting—an atheist plot to take over the government?

Apparently, the Catholic League’s crack investigative team never thought to contact any of the Secular Coalition representatives at the meeting. So for the Catholic League and others who would rather opine than investigate, I’ll make it easy for you by telling what happened at the meeting.

Funny too:

After a breakthrough in the organic chemistry sector, we saw the potential of organic solar cells as a substitute for current ones. With the help of independent benefactors the first experiments with an organic photovoltaic cell were held in 2010. The results showed a relatively high sunlight energy conversion efficiency of about 71%.

In the years following, Babel Research managed to enhance the cell to an efficiency of 87% in 2012, using new types of polymers. We named this new type of cell the Black Solar Cell, due to its appearance and maximum sunlight absorption.

Because of its success the decision was made to build a field of Black Solar Cells in the Sahara desert which would span over 4000 acres to accommodate 30% of the world’s energy need. Nowadays most of the technological devices are incorporated with Black Solar Cells, thus resulting in the global use of this Babel product.
